MZ was never for me but I'm so in on Sorcery, I don't even care if it goes under, I love collecting the set, look of the cards and playing it. Reminds me of the d&d TCG from the 90s, I wanted to like that so much (and still collect cards to this day) but playing it terrible.

Anyone with two eyes and a brain knew it would fail eventually, it was just a clone of Early Pokémon TCG art without the video games or actual organic interest to sustain past the pandemic TCG bubble.

I gave metapoo a shot at my shop, the first set we had only sold $40 worth in my store but I planned to stay the course, then I found out that the next set was only available to stores who signed up to host play, after selling $40 worth there was no one trying to play, but still I persevered, them it turned out that somehow they said I hadn't signed up for play even though I had and they refused me boxes and that was my out, lol now I'm glad that happened so I only lost about $400 on this stupid game
Also to add I'm not happy about anyone losing our, but I am really happy that I didn't lose any more than I had

The people working the Metazoo booth at NYCC this past year where the rudest twats I’ve had to deal with in a very long time. They saw this coming for a year and just tried to grab as much cash as possible. I’m never happy to see a company fail but….

its not a big L he probably lost 50k-100k in terms of current inventory worth nothing. he said in the video he has 200 boxes left of every release. He was able to run a sale to his patrons and make money on the game, so the real losers are everyone else that bought, collected and were holding it.

Metazoo may have had an concept, but the art was never gonna stand the test of time.
I remember seeing what the fuss was about and looking up the cards to find very mediocre art with ugly red borders.

Thanks Rudy! I remember an interview you did with the creator of Metazoo. I was excited for the game because the nostalgic art reminded me of early Pokemon. However, that interview opened my eyes and knew this game was going no where based on what the creator was saying. I avoided spending money. Too bad you couldn't save me from Magic.

anyone with a functioning frontal lobe could have predicted the downfall of metazoo. the game catered towards sweaty investors from the start. only 60 players showed up to the biggest tournament the game ever held. players were an after thought as evidenced by the lack of info for them. can you tell me a single strategy you could use in a game? most likely not but im sure you could tell me exotic financial data about a 1st edition booster box.
in the end metamike burned everyone super hard. rudy absolutely believed in the product and he was the hype machine for it. that’s the only part where rudy takes the L. rudy didnt tank the company, mike zoo and the metatards at the top of the food chain did

In the beginning was very upfront about it not being “FaB 2.0” and only something you should get if you’re into it. I don’t think he believed in the product as a long term hold, but I do think he knows it could have been run way better and made the company and himself a lot more money. I’d be kinda pissed too if I put that much effort into a regular revenue stream and someone else f’d it up for me.

MetaZoo always seemed money hungry. They got into NFTs. They did a stupid playing card kickstarter and they would ban people on discord for no reason
The tipping point was when they cancelled 2 promised 50k tournaments and took 3-4 months to pay us the top players. But, they were still printing random products nobody asked for and not delivering their promises on sets they promised to deliver.

This whole time Metazoo was just Mike getting stoned behind his computer and chummin around in Discord backrooms making business deals and outsourcing as much work as he could. Anyone can make a similar game all you are buying is name which is well known in the TCG world but mostly not in a good way you also have to ask how many buyers are interested now we are going into down market. Maybe a few hundred thousand but unlikely worth it even at that price.

FaB has a thriving player base, Metazoo had exactly a dozen players and a billion investors. They wanted to be hype beast pokemon so unbelievably bad that it was painful. They had such a great concept and decided to throw it all away for greed.

@virginraydevito they have increased the number of large tournaments by 50%, from 50 to 75. Each tournament prize pool is at least 30k USD. It's larger than MTG pro tournament scene

Most, if not all those ($600+) "6.9 Year Anniversary" boxes were MetaZoo. Wow.
This was 100% DOA. There are way too many other popular TCG's out there for metazoo to have tried to make a dent in the market. It also had no real backbone, no supporting IP, no long term history. Unfortunately this was an "I told you so" moment.
Tbh it just felt too much like a pump and dump for most TCG players. Maybe it wasn’t or wasn’t supposed to but too many people trying to push it sounded like that.

You want to know what happened? MetaZoo was nothing but an investor trap. That's what happened. It wasn't a great TCG that was really wanted. It was just eaten up by mostly investors, making it look better than it actually was doing since set 3 at most. It was bad long before Hello Kitty so don't even try and pass blame to TCGP. If you weren't huffing your own supply so hard, you would have seen what everyone else was telling you.
This right here is why you don't just mindlessly assume "EvErYtHiNg gO Up!". Cause then when it doesn't, you are just gonna be how Rudy is right now. Mad and frustrated and wanting to blame every single other thing except yourself for getting in on it. If anything, let this be a learning experience to all the people who lost money. I feel like when the card game has art that looks like it was made by a 3 year old it isn't going to do well in the long run. The reason i first got into magic was because the art of the cards was beautiful. Then i learned it play and i loved it. I still like looking at the art on the cards. Metazoo i couldn't stand the look of the cards right from the get-go.

@@prop1010 Its the cynicism of card games. its far better to air on failure than success because when it fails you can hype the "fuck you I was right" train. If the game succeeded then you can go humbly "huh I guess I was wrong" .
To be fair, every day people say Magic is destined to fail. Internet commenters have predicted 20 of the last 1 CCG failures.

It wasn’t just management, they tried to grow to fast. They should have kept it simple with booster boxes and a side product here and there for a few years while they staked their chips.

The "real life situations influence the game" mechanic made the game, frankly, unplayable. The gamepiece crowd might have been right about this one.

Wanting to pull out before keeping the company afloat starts to dip too hard into the profit he made.
Probably not a collaboration but rather just a licensing agreement where they owed Sanrio mega bucks for the usage of HK but when it flopped they didn't earn back the money to pay it off.

@@RealJohnKimble it's not even a subjective thing that can be agreed to or not, Magic, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh make the most money, have the biggest brands, and the most cultural impact, that's why they are called the big 3, Its not like a bunch of people got together and subjectively agreed that they shared the same opinion, about what is big 3 lol.
Its based on measurable characteristics. Not something people can disagree over.
In fact, Yu-Gi-Oh is way ahead of Magic in many ways, measurable ways, again lol. For example, Yu-Gi-Oh has released 5 feature films compared to zero for MTG, YGO has 30 years of ongoing television, zero for MTG. Yu-Gi-Oh has sold 100 million copies of its books, MTG isn't even remotely close to that lol. Yu-Gi-Oh has released over 50 major studio video games, plus the major digital clients Duel Links and Master duel, so it would be like, if MTG had 50+ major video games in addition to arena and MTGO lol.
That's just scratching the surface, too. MTG does also do certain things Better than YGO, like in terms of the card game alone, MTG makes a bit more money. MTG had a billion dollar year recently, Yu-Gi-Oh Around 800 million.
But just keep all that in mind next time, otherwise you will look uninformed when you talk about this stuff lol. Forgetting one of the big 3 doesn't help your case to sound knowledgeable but I understand if you just never grew up with it or played it, since I did grow up with it and am primarily a YGO player that sounds crazy to me but hey lol
Wasn't Metazoo dubbed the card game "by investors, for investors"? I vaguely remember hearing that phrase and it spoke to lots of the people who were buying their products (Obviously not everyone, but way too much compared to other tcgs).
I don't think I ever heard anyone talk about the game except as an investment. Which seemed too much like when people were buying new comic books they never intended to read.
I never bought any Metazoo. I wanted to but it was always crazy expensive. Then I forgot about them for over a year until this video. I would be open to buying up some product when it starts to tank. Maybe just for fun. But I don't hear about the game being played at all. My local comic book store and card shop only do Pokemon/Magic game nights etc. Never see an advertisement to play metazoo.

There have been approximately 300 failed TCGs since Magic changed the world of table top gaming, to think any TCG has a shot, even if well funded and well designed is pretty much impossible.
I worked in a card store During metazoo's first 2 sets. I told people, probably hundreds of times, that a game that doesn't get played will NEVER last.

@chim007azo I mean there's two lines of logic here. One being that you are being bad for the store's bottom line immediately by trying to get customers to buy anything and everything. Though if you sell them failing card games and continue to do so then you can erode the trust of your customer base. The second line is that you're vaginally letting people know the issues of a product ahead of time. Which might hurt short term sales but gain the trust of your gaming community. I can say I've seen the 1st too often and those stores usually don't last. The 2nd are the stores that I've seen have very strong playerbases
@@Darkersneasel your job is not to down talk product, it's to sell it. Not recommending something is one thing. Actively trying to not sell something is not your job. If the boss/owner didn't want to sell it they would not sell it or discount it. It's not really your call to make as an employee. You have no idea what people will enjoy or why they are buying it. If someone asks you if it's something good to hold on to or be worth something later, it's fair to be honest. If this was being said "hundreds of times" I doubt people were asking that question that often

kinda a let down to be honest. memes and jokes aside, i always sorta liked the concept behind metazoo. all i've got left from metazoo now is a single 1st edition cryptid nation box ill probably just keep as a relic of a bygone era. i just saw someone list 8 boxes of wilderness for 150 bucks on ebay so its looking like its gonna be a massive liquidation of sealed product.
If I would have lived in the US, I would sue Rudy for fraud. He knew it was crap and yet sold it as ‘amazing.’
