Finally....it was a money grab from the start, borderline scam. It's entire purpose was to copy other tcg's, and had little playability or likeability which is the two most important aspects for cards to be popular. If you didn't see it coming then you're blind.
Honestly not surprised at all. Magic, Pokemon, Socery, FaB, Weiss, One-Piece, Lorcana, YuGiOH, and more than I can even name, what were they fighting for? 12th to 15th on the list of card games? They were the one box opening on Rudy's channel I could NEVER get into. Rest in pieces.
Just for the sake of looking knowledgeable on the subject you should list YGO after Magic and Pokemon, if you list Magic and pokemon sequentially and then some other game before Yugioh you end up looking like you don't know what the big 3 is
This was 100% DOA. There are way too many other popular TCG's out there for metazoo to have tried to make a dent in the market. It also had no real backbone, no supporting IP, no long term history. Unfortunately this was an "I told you so" moment.
Tbh it just felt too much like a pump and dump for most TCG players. Maybe it wasn’t or wasn’t supposed to but too many people trying to push it sounded like that.
I feel like when the card game has art that looks like it was made by a 3 year old it isn't going to do well in the long run. The reason i first got into magic was because the art of the cards was beautiful. Then i learned it play and i loved it. I still like looking at the art on the cards. Metazoo i couldn't stand the look of the cards right from the get-go.
You want to know what happened? MetaZoo was nothing but an investor trap. That's what happened. It wasn't a great TCG that was really wanted. It was just eaten up by mostly investors, making it look better than it actually was doing since set 3 at most. It was bad long before Hello Kitty so don't even try and pass blame to TCGP. If you weren't huffing your own supply so hard, you would have seen what everyone else was telling you. This right here is why you don't just mindlessly assume "EvErYtHiNg gO Up!". Rudy, it's quite easy to understand what happened: bad management overleveraging in an environment of high interest rates spelled disaster for the Metazoo. Period.
It’s a decent IP and the game is fun to play. There’s already enough product floating around out there, with no new products on the way, I could see tournaments and such still being a thing.

Wasn't Metazoo dubbed the card game "by investors, for investors"? I vaguely remember hearing that phrase and it spoke to lots of the people who were buying their products (Obviously not everyone, but way too much compared to other tcgs).
Idk who would have been surprised by the MZ fall. Unless of course they didn't look through the market. I had a few binders sitting on a desk and decided to flip through them to see what cards were worth from CN1 and Nightfall. On TCGPlayer there was an unnerving amount of cards that hadn't sold a SINGLE unit since October '23. Sure, sealed boxes were moving, at an abysmal volume. Sad that all of these enjoyers will no longer have a game to play, but on the plus side, they can likely pick up boxes for $10 each in a bit.
Imagine investing and spending tens of thousands on those Kickstarter boxes. Jesus, I remember almost buying a first edition box for $800 years ago. Thank god I didn't. You could tell this game was created as a pump and dump and not to actually be played.

Its based on measurable characteristics. Not something people can disagree over. In fact, Yu-Gi-Oh is way ahead of Magic in many ways, measurable ways, again lol. For example, Yu-Gi-Oh has released 5 feature films compared to zero for MTG, YGO has 30 years of ongoing television, zero for MTG. Yu-Gi-Oh has sold 100 million copies of its books, MTG isn't even remotely close to that lol. That's just scratching the surface, too. MTG does also do certain things Better than YGO, like in terms of the card game alone, MTG makes a bit more money. MTG had a billion dollar year recently, Yu-Gi-Oh Around 800 million. But just keep all that in mind next time, otherwise you will look uninformed when you talk about this stuff lol. Forgetting one of the big 3 doesn't help your case to sound knowledgeable but I understand if you just never grew up with it or played it, since I did grow up with it and am primarily a YGO player that sounds crazy to me but hey lol
Thanks for the video Rudy. I am sure lots of people will yell "I told you so!", but it is always sad when a card game/company has to shut down. I play a couple CCG/TCG that also ended long ago, but I still enjoy. It has felt a bit like the 90's where there are a lot of new CCG's/TCG's these days and some will have to end. It is awesome to have so much selection these days, but it is really hard to find a loyal player base that is large enough to keep games afloat. Hoping everyone involved lands on their feet (employees, collectors, players, LGS's, etc.).
I'm curious to see what other info comes out of this. I bought a couple random packs for shits and giggles to use as tokens for MTG and the game is neat. It sounds like they were trying to polish the turd with their future plans to take heat away from them deciding to close, but it very well could have been a get in then get out scheme for them to make a quick buck on the tcg fomo during the 21-22 boom. Thanks for the info Rudy, I'm curious to see what you uncover in the coming days/weeks!

It is awesome to have so much selection these days, but it is really hard to find a loyal player base that is large enough to keep games afloat. This really sucks. Had one of the artists do signing at my LGS a couple years ago. It was a great event.
