The Boss VB-2 VS Behringer Ultra Vibrato (With IDLES' Lee Kiernan)

  • On this week's episode of Can You Hear It? we're joined by guitarist Lee Kiernan from the band, Idles! We're really excited about this one, but will Lee be able to hear the difference between the vintage and the new? And remember, for every win Lee gets correct, he'll get a $5 gift card to Subway, and so will one person from the live chat who also gets the right answer! Good luck!

@@ross3818 I had a strong feeling that you did, sir. My comment was actually for the youngsters in the JHS crowd. I thought at first the very out-of-tune playing was intentional. So OK, i'll roll with it. But when he was offered a tuner I was surprised. I thought maybe the player might eat it. Thanks for your response.

I use Behringer pedals because I'm paralyzed and I can't hit the normal 10mm on/off switch on most pedals with my foot. It's also hard to smash them with my hand.
The Behringer pedals have that wide on/off switch over the battery compartment. It's so much easier for me to hit than other pedals with the conventional switch. I don't think they would handle being stomped on or pounded with my fist. They go on and off with just a light tap.
They are not too bad. I can't hear it. Just make sure you have a fully charged battery or are hooked up to an external power supply. And... I use an affordable Joyo cordless guitar system from my guitar to the first pedal in the chain. A cable from the last pedal into the amp. I am constantly getting cables wrapped around my wheels. Wireless helps very much.

    Dear Mr Scott,
This is an excellent show format, I f'in love when you do these types of videos. Best guitar channel on TH-cam by a long shot.
Not to be a sycophant but these videos have been so helpful for me to learn and realize how much I didn't really know about pedals. Between these blind comparisons and the one about behringer and caline, tc electronics, joyo and similar I've been able to acquire very good sounding pedals for very low investments. It's not that I wouldn't just buy your pedals because even for $100 to $250 they are excellent quality and totally worth it. But, I'm unable to invest that much because I'm permanently disabled and on a fixed income. But, because of your honesty and decency I've been able to acquire excellent substitute clones that I would have never been able to know what to get and how to make them work together so well without years of trial and error and wasted money. It's truly been a great help to someone who is disadvantaged and unable to acquire your excellent products. The bonsai pedal may be the single greatest pedal idea ever and ends any gear debates about which tubescreamer circuit to buy.
What you guys do I greatly appreciate, thank you.

Great shout from Lee on compressor pedals, I bought one few years ago cos I thought I needed one when building my pedalboard, fell into the guitarist pedalboard trap again!! I soon took it off my board, got rid of it and will never play with one again! Definitely an unnecessary and unneeded pedal, takes away all your playing dynamics, plus now there’s more space on the pedalboard for another useful pedal. As Lee said compressors need to be used in the studio when recording which when recording I always use compressors but I’ll never use a compressor pedal for live playing again.

@@leliobarandiaran5891 His ear not being his strongest weapon doesn't mean that his playing or his music is bad.
There are guitarists that don't know how to string up their own guitars and could play circles around most players who can. They're different skill sets and they don't always overlap or impact each other.
The riffs that end up sticking with people are usually pretty easy to play. That's just strong songwriting propping up a simple riff to be something more because of the context it creates and the riff needed didn't need to be complicated.
Not making assumptions about anything other than his ear for pedals or tone.. which is what this episode was based around, not his playing or anything else.

i like using compressors as an effect
if you have a lot of compression, there's this really satisfying thing the notes do when you have the amp set super clean and i love it. it sounds even better when the amp has a little bit of meat to it, whether it's from a boost, or boosting the amp with the output of the comp, or turning up your amp
i don't do it all the time, but it sounds cool to use when you want a nice bluesy clean sound
it's kinda similar to the another brick in the wall solo tone

As far as compression goes, I’ve gone back and forth on whether or not I need mine on my board. I’ve been an always on compressor guy with every comp I’ve ever owned. I currently use the Walrus Deep 6. This is pretty much the only conclusion I’ve been able to reach: When it’s on, I don’t necessarily hear the difference. But when it’s off, I definitely do. So I keep it on my board and never turn it off. That being said, if you have a compressor, do what you want with it. Keep it always on, turn it off if you want. If you don’t have one and don’t want one, don’t worry about it I guess? 🤷🏼‍♂️

It really depends on what you're into playing. Bakersfield chicken pickin'? Always on compressor all day long. If you're playing blues through a cranked Fender tube amp, the compressor is going to kill all hope of having any dynamics. Djent? Smush it.

In 2012, my first guitar teacher who had no idea about the value of old Boss pedals sold 5 fully functional vintage Bosses (including a VB-2 and CE-2) for about $20 each and got a Zoom G2. I had only been playing for a few years back then but I still had my jaw smashing the floor when he broke the news to me. I'm from India so while his cluelessness was excusable, what made it sadder was that he was down on his luck and even if he'd got $100 for each, it'd have brought about genuine change in his life.
