Teena Marie was amazing. She only had one big pop music hit ('Lovergirl', which has a great music video, btw) but she was primarily known for her r&b songs. She was one of few white r&b artists to be embraced by African-American audiences because her soulful style was authentic. She was also one of few women at the time to write, perform and produce all of her work (Rick James produced her first album, but she did all of her other albums after that). Teena Marie has a very wide variety of music. One of my favorites of hers is 'Casanova Brown', so I suggest that for a future reaction.

Artist didn't use vocoders back then. She just used good old fashioned inflection. However Roger Troutman used a talk box (which no one else was using) on a song called "Computer Love" which you should definitely react to.
Vocoders were definitely used in this era, but more in jazz-rock or electronica than mainstream music. Daft Punk weren't the first to use it. And on the talk box, Stevie Wonder and Peter Frampton used it before Roger. BTW, there are definitely post recording tricks on this Teena Marie song, even if it's not vocoder some effects were implied in this.
