Spot on, a mix or RnB and very soulful and funky and still a HYBRID. This sound went from Breakdancing battles on street corners then on to Nightclubs all around the World.
The writer of this classic is David "Hawk" Wolinski hes also on keyboards one of the six members of Rufus & Chaka Khan. He also wrote "Do you love what feel". He writes alot if not most of the group's songs. He is one bad White boy!
One of the reasons why this song is just so damn satisfying is because of how tight and efficient the arrangement is. People don't tend to notice this consciously, but if you listen carefully you start to notice how all the different parts on different instruments all lock in with each other in super clever ways. A couple examples: - The main synth keyboard playing the chords in the verse is actually already playing the rhythm of the main vocals in the chorus. It's a kind of musical foreshadowing, so when the chorus hits, you kinda already feel like you knew what it was gonna be before you even heard it. - The guitar and keyboard riffs at the end of each line in the chorus (after each line of the chorus vocals) are exactly synced up playing the same syncopated rhythm as the hi hats in the drums. This creates a tight accent in the groove at the end of every bar in the chorus that's really satisfying. You feel it even if you don't consciously notice why it's happening. There are a ton more little details like this in the arrangement, all added up together they make the song feel tight AF while also making all the layers feel like they're all totally on the same vibe with not a single thing out of place. The genius about it is how effortlessly it's done and how you just _feel_ how it all works even if you can't put your finger on why. Prince was also a master of this kind of writing and arrangement.
The difference between you and other young people is that you actually feel the magic of this music just as we did back in the day! It's awesome to see!
Ain’t Nobody was Chaka’s final song with her former band Rufus which is why the instrumentation is so full. That’s a whole band including the composer of the song.
You describe it so well, its a great love song, the orchestra that floats all the way through it, the intermittent guitar licks, the funky bass pumping up & down, then the pure soul from Chaka, its pure magic.
If you haven't already you should check out Chaka "Tell Me Something Good" written by Stevie Wonder, "I Feel For U" written by Prince and the Chaka all time classic "Sweet Thing"
I have heard that song my whole life, but ever since Will & Grace used that song with Karen saying it was her and Stanley's " in the mood" song, and then she caught him playing it while having an affair at his office.....it's all I can think about now. I want to crack up everytime I hear it now, because I can only picture that scene. 🤣
Yeeeaaah, Jack. Stank face on fleek! When I say this woman knows every nook and cranny of a music note and can make it sound like you sitting in a subwoofer when she give it to ya......😯 whew! I nearly popped my side when you said this could be on a movie soundtrack. 🤣 It is. Breakin'. It's specifically in a dance routine montage. You know the 80's & 90's love a good montage moment.
This song was a floor filler back in the days. People went crazy in the clubs when they heard the first bars of the intro. And I was one of them ;-). Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin. Pure gold.
It’s so nice to see a young person vibe to the music from my generation. And he’s assessing it correctly and in real time. This was the best of the 80s, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. So much great music came from that era.
The late great Miles Davis said Chaka khan voice sounds like Horn. He said he could play one of her songs and no one would miss her. Lol the ultimate compliment.
Speaking of Miles Davis. His wifey for a brief time, The Infamous Betty Davis (The first Madonna) is a hidden gem! She goes hard and Wass very influential and far ahead of her time. Back in 1973, Check out her: "Anti Love Song" or, if you dare: "Game is My Middle Name"
Love your reaction...love your observations. I can tell you already KNOW that TALENT IS ALWAYS GREAT...is actually transcends time and space. THIS - this - your discovery of music that came before you arrived on this planet, is SO essential to your experience as a human...And I know that's a "dramatic" statement, but it is true...Music SHOULD rock you - like, to your core sometimes - and get your attention, and change your opinion - OR reinforce what you already thought - THIS IS THE THING ABOUT ALL ART...We get to choose what moves us (or, it more aptly chooses US), and it's ALL still for everyone...isn't that a truly beautiful thing? So keep discovering...digging...it only makes your life here richer, I promise.
Put some respeck on her name. I remember that there were certain singers, who shall remain nameless, that were jealous of how Chaka could control her instrument. She could belt out her notes without hollering, all without being able to read a note of music. It's just raw talent.
the harmonies on the chorus r Chaka's own vocals stacked together..Chaka arranges n produces her own vocals(main n background) on many of her stuffs..n she has her own unique style of phrasing n her sense of timing is something else too..her singing is like a drummer who plays in the pocket...nobody else like Chaka really..that is why she's the undisputed queen of funk.
You better shed a tear cause this is the jam... art hits you in the feels no denying it man cry just cry man... you know I do : ) plus dude you need to turn it up
Ayeeeee! The JAM! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 Chaka and Stevie have worked together! They did a song called "Tell Me Something Good". I believe he wrote / produced it, and she sang it
Jack..I’m a new subscriber (last few weeks) but I really like your reaction videos. Chaka is my all time favorite vocalist. I’d even go as far as saying in her prime, she had the best voice in the industry. Haunting and soulful lows and electrifying highs. But since you giving Chaka some love let me give you at least 3 more GREAT vocal songs by her (though there are MANY) 1. Stay - Rufus & Chaka (erykah Badu did a really good remake of this song as well) 2. Got to be there- Chaka (remake of Michaels Jackson’s hit) 3. I was made to love him- Chaka Honorable Mention: Love Has Fallen Down on Me Keep it up bro!
Takes me back. Remember listening and breakdancing to this song back in 1984. One of thee best songs of the 80's and one of the best songs period. Chaka is amazing 👍❤Grt reaction as always
Jack… this is back when people actually played instruments, had talent, we’re original, and didn’t just steal other peoples music and rap o er the top of it. That’s probably why you really enjoy it.
Great reaction, Jack! You've reviewed other Chaka singles before (some with Rufus and some "solo" efforts, if not mistaken). However, (granted, there are other "supreme voices" which come to mind... Aretha, Whitney, and Mariah to name a few)... man, if you do not "dig deeper" into Chaka's music catalogue... you'll be missing more that you could ever imagine! Off my soap-box... keep doing doing what you do and stay inspired, man!
You said that this song should have been a part of a soundtrack back in the eighties guess what it was. There was a movie called "Breakin" that came out in 1984 about breakdancing and this was one of the soundtracks in the movie.
If you liked this I think you will like “New Attitude” by Patti Labelle. It’s more energetic and a faster tempo but it has that same 80s funk/soul/pop feel. And the vocals are A1
Her last hit with Rufus! You should also check out, Everlasting Love(w/Rufus), Do You Love What You Feel(w/Rufus), Clouds(Cissy & Whitney Houston on background vocals), Move Me No Mountain(cover), Night in Tunisia, We Can Work it Out(Beatles Cover), Any Old Sunday, I Know You(I Live You), Pass it On and many more. And also “You Can Make the Story Right.”
yeah... you just got me with "you can make the story right" and all the suggestions from "Naughty"! "Move Me No Mountains"! the way it crescendos... main... i got a big ol smile on my face. I'm finna go play it. Thanks for the reminder!
Loved your reaction. She has other great tracks like Papillon (Hot Butterfly) and I Feel For You (written by Prince). Also, check out The Pointer Sisters with their amazing track Automatic.
Stay! OMG Erykah Badu covered it at the BET Awards in front of Chaka. I turned to my mom like "I've never heard this song by Erykah". My Mom, one of the biggest Chaka fans ever said "That's because it's Chaka's song" Erykah did the song justice, but it doesn't beat the original. Mom was right! Lol
Thank you, Jack. Finally "Ain't Nobody"! This song was featured on an 80s classic dance flick (you were right) called "Breakin" (was kind of corny but love). One of my fav Chaka songs besides this is "Stay", which Erykah Badu also covered on her live album.
I feel like all 60's, 70's, 80's, music is the greatest. They're real artists. Love Chaka Khan. They actually put work into their music. Instrumental and voice.
Hi react to Patti LaBelle “ On My Own ft Michael McDonald “ and “Somebody Loves You Baby (You Know Who It Is)”.She’s from the same era as Chaka and has a big voice as well. Thanks
There is music and then there are anthems. This is an anthem. This comes on an everyone would lose their s@#$ on the dance floor. Good music is timeless. Respect Jack much kudos to you!
"Rufus keyboardist David "Hawk" Wolinski wrote the song around a repeating synthesizer loop backed by a Linn LM-1 drum computer; however, John "JR" Robinson, the band's drummer, played real drums for the recording session. The band did a democratic vote and they decided to include the song in their album repertoire." Lol band.. its best song!
It just dawned on me that you're experiencing, perhaps for the first time, live and competent music, without automated tracks or autotune. This was when you couldn't hide behind click tracks and digital hocus pocus.
Jazz influenced singers can be accurately described as'flowing' in their singing style. If you want to hear the distillation of her jazz influence check out her song miles blowin through off the sugar hill soundtrack

This sound went from Breakdancing battles on street corners then on to Nightclubs all around the World.
This is truly a Masterpiece of a song!!!!
The LEGENDARY Iconic CHAKAAAAAAA ❤❤❤❤
Also on this album Jack is a song called “Everywhere”. This a remake of a Fleetwood Mac song and the arrangement is ridiculous.
Dude’s facial expressions while listening to Chaka is everything! There’s only one Chaka Khan....true living legend.
The writer of this classic is David "Hawk" Wolinski hes also on keyboards one of the six members of Rufus & Chaka Khan. He also wrote "Do you love what feel". He writes alot if not most of the group's songs. He is one bad White boy!
Jazz, Funk, Soul, and R&B…even disco intertwine with each other.

This song gives me instant HAPPY
Chaka to Jack : "Tell me something good", and Jack delivers... that's because Jack mention about Stevie.
The difference between you and other young people is that you actually feel the magic of this music just as we did back in the day! It's awesome to see!
God, that's so true. I used to dance to her music as a teenager. So great to see this young man's passionate response.
This is a huge party hit. Always good to have female singers express love…
Ain’t Nobody was Chaka’s final song with her former band Rufus which is why the instrumentation is so full. That’s a whole band including the composer of the song.
Every other time shes done it live she has a full band. Rufus should not be associated with this song at all
@@Phillyhockey1 It was written by Rufus keyboardist David "Hawk" Wolinski for the group last LP

"Through the fire" is probably considered her second best song.
You are listening to "THE QUEEN OF FUNK" in any genre Chaka Khan is QUEEN!

You describe it so well, its a great love song, the orchestra that floats all the way through it, the intermittent guitar licks, the funky bass pumping up & down, then the pure soul from Chaka, its pure magic.
The Legendary CHAKA 🔥💙💯
Agree with the instrumentals, brings a unique sound , funky mix with an unknown sound ..
one of the best
I also love the fact that she's not oversinging, she's doing her thing without showing off
Even if she was flexing, when you sound like this, ya gotta do what you do 👏🏻
Chaka was the lead singer of a group called Rufus or Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. This was her last hit with Rufus before she went on a solo career.
Rufus sent her off RIGHT!
Made SURE that she didn't forget what she had with that band!

This is one of her best jams of all time. No doubt. Probably my personal favorite 😍 R & B perfection, right here.
I’ve literally been waiting for this reaction!!!! Ima go die and be resurrected and then view. Toodles ✌️
Ofc!!!
Fun Fact: Chaka Khan is drummer! So that plays a part in her phrasing/timing.
The late great Miles Davis said Chaka khan voice sounds like Horn. He said he could play one of her songs and no one would miss her. Lol the ultimate compliment.
