I believe another misconception is the idea that if you free yourself from shyness you will sing whatever you want. And though it is important to overcome this, singing is also a practice
When I started singing power metal, I was so disappointed when I learned how to use my mixed voice because it didn't sound like i felt like it should've. After maybe 1 year and a half of practicing in my mixed voice, I eventually figured out how to shape my mouth to create more resonance, and I started realizing my voice is crazy unique for power metal because I have a very pop sounding voice in the first place. Nowadays, I've recently unlocked the ability to use rasp and gruffness in my mixed voice because I started throat singing and gaining the muscle memory related to it, and that has taken my voice to another level. Having said all of this, I have gotten an overwhelming reception from guys in the industry saying that my voice is the most unique voice they've heard in power metal in a long time and a bunch of guys want to sing covers with me and feature me on their tracks etc. The amount of work I put into my voice has payed off in ways I never imagined.
I cannot thank you enough Chris for the first tip in this video, it's been the most constructive and helpful piece of information that I've gotten on my journey of learning how to sing so far. It is a concept that I kept hearing over and over, but I did not know how to apply it and you explained it perfectly. You really are a wonderful teacher, thank you so much for your channel and keep making your videos!
I think you're like 99% right on point #1. Don't get me wrong, you're the coach lol. Granted, this was after I started to understand the fundamentals, but one thing that actually opened me up was when I started to sing Weezer songs and just happened to discover that I have a real similar tone to my own voice as Rivers. And something about imitating him just a little bit really opened my voice up and helped me break more into my mixed resonance without strain for the first time. Also, idk if there's much to dissect with Rivers' voice, but it would be fun to see you break down his vocals!
My last vocal teacher was NOT good at explaining this concept to me. He got bogged down with how the body works to produce the sound rather than just tel me what to do.
That's why I love Chris, altough I already know these things, but it took me 4 years to realize myself with experimenting on myself, also most youtube coaches are a joke. I like Chris because he really can give useful tips which you can try and see results.
I don't try to sound like any other individual singer, it's my actual aim to sound like every other singer ! If someone on the radio can sing in a way, my actual target is to be able to do so also. Not saying I don't have a more natural style, we all have a natural range, timbre, reverberation, etc., but one feels the necessity to expand as well as improve. The quest is to find out how to get there safely.

Issue number 3 goes even further when you consider marketing and genres in that singers are encouraged to imitate styles, celebrities, and cater to a specific niche completely disregarding one’s voice specifications and personality.
I learned how to sing in just 3 months. And started singing different genres. And it was good. But then one day i wanted to improve in singing more. I wanted to sing like a classical singer(that has a very clear pronounciation). In the process of practicing classical singing i forgot the right way of singing. I sang with my larynx up high wanting to reach high with clear tone not knowing that it is not the right way of singing. This stress me a lot. Because i know in myself that i know how to sing but then i forget the proper way of it. It makes me think that singing is mot for me. But then i saw this. After watching this i knew the mistakes i have done. And i think i need to get back to square one. But, it's fine, as long as i already know what is my mistakes. Thank you so much for this video!

Great video. At first I took issue with finding your voice before imitating others, but once I saw that you meant to be aware of feel before sound, I understood what you are saying. Working on the fundamentals to have proper support and thereby making it all feel good and not harmful is great. I just think we will always be learning other's songs and borrowing from their sound. I think we do this right away as well, it's just good to remind that it's ok to just work on our sound and our fundamentals :)
For #2 I agree you need to find your sweet spots and comfortable notes. But to decide what key to sing in, you need to look at the melody. Some melodies go 1 low to high 5th or it could be the 5th or 3rd below. Each melody is different. When students tell me they sing best in the key of F, let's say, I ask them to sing the specific song to me first. Then again some melodies use a 6 note range and others have a most 2 octaves (rare)
Ya, you're right. I use the comfortable note approach when I'm familiar with the melody. Am I strong on the 5th of the song if that is prominent in the melody? ...For example. But ya, you have to be familiar with what the melody does, and then compare that with your 'go to' notes and always... context context context!
I've just started doing some covers using an interface and software which I've uploaded on to my channel. Chris would appreciate a critique. Singing is without question the most difficult aspect. It's easy to strum chords on a guitar but the singing is so hard to nail. I hate my voice sometimes. It's not even just about singing in key, your voice also has to sound good and I don't feel that mine does. I'm also a huge fan of singer's like Staley, Cornell and Vedder and would love to be able to sing like them but just can't get anywhere near those high notes. Another thing I've noticed is that my voice starts getting croaky after about 15 mins of singing. Does my head in.
Hi Chris! I've heard lots of tips on how to warm up your voice, but are there any tips / cool down exercises for the end of singing sessions that'll help protect our voice? I've heard people talk about them but never seen any examples
Lots of good info here. However, knowing what the root and 5th of a key is, say D is the 5th of key G, or F is the 5th of key Bb will not in anyway let you know if a song will "fit" your voice. Even as you demonstrated by singing two Bs and octove apart in this video, which would both be the 5th in the key of E, the lower B may be easy for most guys, while the higher B may be impossible to reach currently. Simply a key in no way will determine how high or low the notes of the melody are, or their frequency of occurrence. Any key can have any range. Also, the root and 5th are just a few of the notes used. Commonly a major or minor pentatonic will likely be most the notes in a given key, but again, they could all be in 2, possibly 3 different octaves in most cases.
Your mic didn't do clipping on 3:40! How did you do that? Set low sensitivity of mic before recording and then used a compressor? Or your mic automatically changes sensitivity and there's no clipping, "overloads" in recorded samples? Or how?
I remember when I first started singing I wanted to sound like Lzzy Hale so I looked up on TH-cam how to make your voice sounds raspy, and I kept using that technique so that now I sometimes feel pain just singing cleanly
@@chrisliepe no prob man! I am looking forward to a video in which you talk a little bit more about discovering your own vocal apparatus, hope that you make one soon
I’m catching on! Can’t wait to get my guitar out and play with my range. Do people have a “key”? I had this choir director when I played my guitar 🎸 for church service and she made us transcribe every song to the key of F or F sharp or something so the band was playing in “her key”. She sang horribly regardless but nobody would say a thing to her and just went along because she was the choir “director”. But after watching some of your videos I’m getting the feeling that you should not only be able to sing in different keys, but be able to switch keys in the middle of a song because some songs do just that, don’t they?
Thanks for the question! I do offer some one-on-one Skype lessons, as part of some of my courses. The best place to start would be to sign up for my free 3-video course! The link is here in the description of the video. :)
Chris Liepe I already did all that :-) and pretty much watched a bunch if not all of your videos about singing, I’m gonna sign up for that course that’s $97. Thanks a lot for your contribution for all of us man, stay healthy, thank you very much Chris.
It's quite frustrating that so much of singing control is literally out of reach for me since my muscle control mostly stops at my chest. Below the chest, I have little-to-no control. It makes singing properly far more difficult. (Still gonna freakin' try, though! Lol)
Must be why I sound better on the toilet,............Love ALL of your vids,...best on net and ive learned from everyone on youtube,......................................And this point was huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look your channel. Lot's of good info. Here is a suggestion however. I feel you started out right by saying a singer needs to know their own voice. You then started some ideas of being a certain key. You were saying that a singer should know their sweet spot ect, and highest notes etc. However, I'd like to point out that knowing what "key" you may like on certain songs you've come across is of little use to knowing your voice will "fit" in that Key any other time. And also, you did the root and 5th in G, then went to E and did root and 5th I believe, then went to B and called the the root one, even though you didn't say you went to B. The B note you sang you called one which is really the 5th in E, which you last mentioned. Anyway, then you sang an octave higher - another B which would be a 1 again in B, or a 5 if you were still in E. At any rate, despite being the wrong numbers , no biggie there, it is a misconception that knowing what the root and 5th of a key are will assure that you can comfortably sing that song, as the melody could be anywhere for different songs in the same key. Sorry, so long, but knowing a particular songs higher and lowest notes will be instructive - knowing the key will not. Now, if the song you heard is liked but too high, knowing how to pick and play a lower key would be helpful. IMHO. - with a music degree.
Hey Chris, what do you think about Chester's vocals? i watched his concert 1994 when he was with Grey Daze. He sang there pretty good. He was about 17. How could he sing like this? I mean with distortion and mixed voice and everything. Was that drug effect that could make him feel free?
Hi Chris, I have been enjoying your videos after many years of vocal frustration I look for any tip I can get! I have a criticism however with regards to how we are hearing you. One of the biggest gripes I have is that I can’t find someone who can demonstrate in a room with me what the likes of Vince Gill / Rascal flatts etc are doing with volume and all sorts really. I feel that hearing over a condenser mic is too much like trying to figure out what is happening on a record. Have you ever thought of setting up with two boundary mics on the wall and recording it stereo. They are the closest thing to human ears. I personally need to hear the full dynamics and I don’t ever get that from this kind of set up. I think it can be the most misleading thing with singing tutorials. I would have PM’d this is I could btw so if I can email you I will remove this happily.
@@chrisliepe yea it's like weird as if I got a different brain kind of & it's like gotta record it & listen back a million times to stop sounding like I'm singing in alien . You are probably 'despised' because you believe you are despised so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. You don't make videos because you're famous and have sponsors.... its the other way round, except for a few celebrities, most you tubers started with zero sponsors or fame or any real reason to be listened to...
Great lesson Chris!
Hello brother how are you?
Hey Chris, what do you think about Chester's vocals? i watched his concert 1994 when he was with Grey Daze. He sang there pretty good. He was about 17. How could he sing like this? I mean with distortion and mixed voice and everything. Was that drug effect that could make him feel free?
I love chester! I actually did a video on him. You can find it in the "in the style of" playlist!
Top 👍
"Poop muscles" hahaha
you really sound like Joel o'keeffe when going high 😎👍🏻
OMG!! Poop muscles! I love that! 😂😂
Hi Chris,
I have been enjoying your videos after many years of vocal frustration I look for any tip I can get!
Plz accept to be my vocal coach when i make it i promise i will come back to thank you ...u have changed my singing voice by ur techniques
good
The fact is some of your favorite singers don't sing technically as well as you'd think too. Anyone know what Chris's degree is if he has one?
Yo I got a question .. regarding diction .. sometimes it comes out like wtf is that... any tips ?!
Is it when you’re singing in your comfortable range?
@@chrisliepe yea it's like weird as if I got a different brain kind of & it's like gotta record it & listen back a million times to stop sounding like I'm singing in alien . More in low/mid register actually. It's disturbing as it ain't how I talk . It's like not always but I gotta keep it in check ! ? I mean i have fairly poor diction & slur a bit when i speak sometimes if I'm not careful but not like that it's like a different accent ?? hey when i sing?? what's going on ??
@@chrisliepe I love your vids I think your the best singing man around on TH-cam because you actually get right in there & demonstrate & talk total sense & don't muck around with scales & all that null head stuff. Great uploads 👍
I loved your advice on #3... until I actually shat myself! I'm sending you a bill for one pair of boxer briefs, Chris. Lol~
Haha!
So that's how Jim Morrison did it all the power came from his leather pants and huge belt buckle xD
hehe
Are you telling me that if I shit my pants, I’m doing it right? Jk great vid
So you're telling me "Sing from your ass son!"
Hehe yes
*am guilty of all of these but smiling innocently so chris wont notice me*
I think Steven Tyler precisely tried to sound like Steven Tyler, it worked pretty well for him, just sayin....
You left out hydration, that's major major important, I bet you didn't know that creatine monohydrate allso brings moisture into the vocal cords, or did you?? I bet you know that exercising for 20 minutes before singing makes voice more flexible, or do you?? I'm 50 yrs old, I know secrets most don't know, yet I am despised cuz I'm not famous, let's talk sometime if you want more secrets to unlock the voice
Make a video, stop whining. Too many grudges for a 50yo
@@ruiferro4160 I don't have sponsors, but I have knowledge others don't
You are probably 'despised' because you believe you are despised so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. You don't make videos because you're famous and have sponsors.... its the other way round, except for a few celebrities, most you tubers started with zero sponsors or fame or any real reason to be listened to... Other than their content... If you have genuely good info and can explain it well, no matter who you are or how old you are, make a video or blog or post in helpful way for others... do it consistently and if it has value it will grow and work. I'm speaking to myself too as I've procrastinated starting my channel for too long.
