PLEASE do an analysis of Prince's vocals. Totally underated male vocalist. Range, rasp, growls, squauls, squeals, falsetto & more. But you'd have to be familiar with his work. Live stuff is crazy too.
@@williamkelly9491 A lot of people do actually. Just think how many didn't know he was a great guitar player until While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Underrated doesn't mean they don't know who he is. I'm speaking of specific aspects about him. Understood?
Karen Clark-Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole & Twinkie Clark are the main reasons I find myself on these videos cuz baby... them sisters vocals are from another planet altogether. Wheeeeew!
Justin Valerio Adriaanse Plus, most teachers wouldn’t teach you this stuff. The overwhelming majority of vocal coaches refuse to teach “improper” techniques. (Which is annoying because vocal distortion can sound awesome)
That rasp was like shooting at the note with buckshot. She sang it clean after she knew she could get the closure. Probably out partying the night before.
No matter how much I try, I just cant find a good way to growl. I really love the sound it produces and I love soul, jazz and r&b but it feels I cant sing these genres without knowing how to growl. The only way I produce that kind of sound is by the popular "throat cleaning", which is unhealthy and hurts if overused. I dont know what to do anymore, Im not a bad singer or a beginner one, I just cant find the correct way to do it effortlessly and healthy.
Maybe look into "throat singing". A tribal form of singing done by the Inuit people and some African cultures as well. It's a technique that metal singers use to get that insane growl. When done correctly it doesn't damage the voice.
That was super informative, thank you!! Can you do a VLOTH on Beyonce I realize that she sings super clear however she can effortlessly put rasp into her voice when she wants something more raw like the song sandcastles
I've actually talked about Beyonce A LOT on this channel as the VLOTH series, thought brand new, is something that's been a part of a lot of my other videos! Here's a link to the playlist with all my Beyonce related videos! bit.ly/2DfS8H7
This was amazing!! I always had a feeling that there was difference between growls and squalls, but I never knew it was to that extent. I always love a good level of vocal distortion, whenever it’s done tastefully (cause I’ve seen some people go a little too far with it lol).
I would really need to interview some gospel singers because I have almost no idea how these singers healthily do all this stuff! A lot of them do and I am SO intrigued!
I haven't really found any 'academic' and entertaining TH-camrs that teach you these vocal effects - I think it'll be something you could really get into and make your content special! Your Yebba vocal analysis was litterally sooooo fun and insightful for a singer like me y'know? Keep it up anyways!! :D
I love your videos its informational. I really wish I could sing and wish I knew notes and keys. I still can't harmonize. I only can sing my own music.
Disagree. Growl, rasp and squalls are just some different mechanisms of creating distortion and that's why they sound different. They just have different timbres. The degree of distortion can be varied independently of the distortion type and has nothing to do with the pops per second.
I don't think we're saying different things at all. This video was more of an aural approach to what are, yes, physiological differences in each of these types of vocal distortion. They sound different because of various adjustments singers make to make these sounds. God bless and thanks for watching!
Are growls most distorted? It's an overlay of pure rumbling over your voice while a squal is more like heavily shaking your voice and rasp is slight rumble or scratchiness to your voice.
Brother, this video is great and when you switched the graph I lost my sh*t! Awesome. But take at look at the Yebba video again; I notice two things: watch her nostrils up until the second note (where the rasp goes away.). I looks like she's momentarily accelerating her breath output and "dumping" most of it through her nasal passage. Second, there is a flip from a falsetto or head-voice-placement to the more chest-voice placement right when her nostrils release. This leads me to believe that although transition is freakin' sublime, and here execution is pretty seamless, the rasp in this moment may be deliberate (though it does seem to come to her very naturally so I wouldn't be surprised if she happened upon the ability incidentally. What do you think?
An interesting question would be, is there a way to produce HEALTHY rasp? I know growls can be healthy (Beyoncé is an expert in that area), but when it comes to rasp, unless is natural to someone's voice, it can't be healthy, right? Or can it?
Maybe I need to do a part 2 to this. I know a few singers that can produce a VERY distorted sound, yet their voices are as clear as ever when they want to be! I don't quite know about a 'HEALTHY' version of rasp. All vocal distortion brings some type of risk for damage in my opinion.
Wow bro.. really loved this! However, I do have ONE tiny "pushback"🤏 regarding KCS. While of course she's quite capable of doing either one of the 3 at will, not so sure the clip you used depicted the Squall technique. It was more of a growl. In fact, "GROWLING" is a Clark Sisters specialty. They can overlap at times in their "highs" but what gives it away is the dark/full, heaviness of it
Love your channel and you expertise!! Also the fact that u acknowledge my 4 favorite vocalist at one point. BEYONCE Knowles, Karen Clark Sheard,Kierra Sheard & Brandy🙌 all for different reasons. Their the goats. Hey we need the top 3 of your National anthem 😄
Listen. Karen is my FAAAAAVE. I actually wrote a few of my university papers on her. In fact ALL OF THEM!👏👏👏 And you're right! I DO need to finish that series....Will do! Thanks a LOT for the support!🙂
Rasp is like a scratchy voice. Growls are more aggressive and have more of an R sound to them. Squalls are less aggressive and are more have more of an open sound. As in there's no consonant on it.
Isn't a squall kinda like the sound you get when imitating a raven or crow sound? I think Prince used to add squall sounds to many of his more agressive falsetto notes.. (Sorry I just stumbled on your channel and I really like your stuff, that's why I commented 4 times within the last 30 min😂)
Beyoncé squalls mostly right? I found that growl as Christina does or Louis Armstrong is only achievable in low-mid and mid range belts, I feel it's impossible to drag up the weight to high belts, so it must be squall to have that effect on F5's so easily as she does. I wish there was a TH-cam tutorial in how to squall 😑
