    I personally would not want to accentuate the already overdone panel lines nor add the rather garish paint highlights, but I can't help really admiring the finished model. As you say, it's an artistic interpretation - a look which pleases you, and that's all that matters. It may not appear strictly accurate, but you've elevated a very basic model into something quite beautiful and inspirational. And the cockpit is a work of art!

    • @FlyingSModels

      Thanks, Ian. I know that a lot of folks find my work a little (or a lot) overdone. But as you say, that's the beauty of a hobby and an "art", if I can call it that. We can build in a way that pleases us and that hopefully inspires another build and maybe even others to build or try something new in their builds. Really appreciate your thoughtful and considerate comments!

    I'm amazed by the extra detail you've added, lovely finished model. It's about 55 years since I built that very model and it's 50 years since I last built any model! Only last week my wife went out and bought me this model, a Hawker Hurricane, a FW 190 and a ME 109 for Christmas to give me something to do over the winter. I won't be going to buy an airbrush or anything like that, just going to enjoy building and painting them.
    I find it incredible that Airfix are still manufacturing it. I'd love to find out how many they have sold!
    As mentioned elsewhere I too was shocked to see the colour scheme you used underneath
    it's the first time that I've seen it. I've googled it and found images of it. 👍👍 It's bit like finding Father Christmas dressed in blue! 🤣🤣
    I would loved to have seen the iconic duck egg blue which most folk would recognise and relate to. Keep up the good work👍👍

      I appreciate the feedback and am glad to hear that you are getting back into building. These little Airfix kits are great and you will really enjoy them. Masterly! Interesting to note that obviously even British modellers havnt seen or heard of the underside black and white scheme. Many, many years ago I built a Hurricane like so. One side black but the other side wasnt literally plain white but a very ‚whitish creme‘ colour. I think I used the recommended Humbrol paint then. Anyway, this was inspirational, thank you.

      @FlyingSModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback, Rob. I think if you check out your references, you'll find that many of the early British WW2 types (Hurricanes, Spitfires, Gladiators, etc.) had the undersides of their wings painted black and white. I believe it to be a form of identification for folks on the ground so that they didn't get excited and start firing on them thinking they were the enemy but I'd need to confirm that.

    I can only agree with the majority of the comments on here about your excellent modelling skills.
    It's quiet inspiring and like one of two on here have already mentioned I to have just got back into the hobby. Never staying too far away just, as they say, getting my mojo back.
    So what I'm going to state next might seem a bit churlish. Your overall finish is superb and I get the adage that it's for personal benefit and enjoyment but for the sake of accuracy your camouflage is wrong.
    Specifically the soft edges. Battle of Britain Spirfires didn't have soft edged camouflage. This was applied to late war aircraft. Early war including the Battle of Britain aircraft were painted in hard edge between colours.
    I've been to competitions and in one particular one I entered the same Airfix Spitfire kit. I painted mine in Sailor Malan colours. And same as you I sprayed mine free hand. Not that I was expecting any awards but on returning to my model I found a note stating that it was a shame about the finish because it would have got a prize but the camo was wrong. You live and learn. Check out any photographs of the period and you'll find that it's true.

      I appreciate and value your input, perspectives, and experiences and thank you for taking the time to share them in a thoughtful way. As you can probably tell from many of my build videos, I'm not sure complete and 100% accuracy ranks at the top of my list of qualities and virtues. I know it's probably sacrilege to say but I'm one of those "if it looks right to me" kind of guys. It's definitely an area I need to improve on. I model almost more for the art form vs. historical and complete accuracy. And as you well know, art is entirely subjective. Like I said, I admit that it is one of my big weaknesses when it comes to this hobby, or at least a weakness if I were entering model contest (which I'm not). Sometimes I find that if I build it more technically accurate models, they look like toys in these small scales. For that reason, I typically throw in a fair amount of artistic license.
      Again, just a personal preference. Thank you again for your thoughtful inputs. All the best to you and this great hobby!

    Erm.... why all the "veterans" modellers always do a panelizing so marked? Real planes didn't habe that kind of aspect.... ITS AN AERODINAMICAL FRAME, more reliefs on the surface = more resistance to the wind... Thats why we must do research of the plane and see it in REAL LIFE IN PERSON IF WE CAN. By the why.... thats not the correct brown... the raf used the DARK BROWN color...

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate the feedback and since you asked, I figured I'd respond to your question. Not in any way to stir up controversy or dispute, but rather to explain why you see some "veteran" modelers finish their models this way. Some folks consider modeling an extension of an artform and appreciate the visual effects that are provided by various weathering techniques. Other folks prefer to build more of a clean airframe, believing that no real plane ever collected much grime or showed a lot of wear and tear. For me, I'm glad that there is room in this hobby for all kinds of finishes and I appreciate the representations that modelers who chose to finish one way or the other create. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) not many people and certainly not me are or were able to see a real Spitfire as it looked in 1940. We only have pictures and photos that are themselves, distorted and sometimes difficult to judge color and weathering. Rather than focus on what one builder does that might be right or wrong according to my own standards, I try to simply celebrate the fact that they have created something for others to see and if they are happy with it, so am I. Once again, I appreciate your thoughtful feedback and wish you all the best on your own modeling journey. Cheers!

      @@FlyingSModels Thank you so much!!!! That was a question i had for years! And nobody told me the right answer. They only said, "we doi it because it has to be like that". Just for competition, if the judges of the events like Latin Militaire wanted a panelizing really marked, then most of competitors did that. I competed too, but i showed my planes being the most similar possible to the real ones. Like the Tamiya's Bf109 E-7 from 1/72 and the Revell's Hurricane MkII.c Trop. The first one with light witherings like smoke, burnt metal, some oil and scratches over the paint, and the last one with the same weathering but with a lot of sand under the wings and the landing gear.
      Thats how i work my kits, the most realist possible, if the plane was in afrika then some dust over the frame. If the plane was in europe in summer, no mud at all. If the plane was plane in russia spring, then a lot of mud. Thats what makes me happy and satisfied...
      I don't want to fullfill expectations of others i just want to build the perfect model for me, or the most realist model i belive i can make.
      Im just a "rookie" modeller (just 22 kits built) not like the "veterans", who was years on this hobby (and most of them more than 80 kits built!). I had this existential crisis since 2019. And you cleared my mind with your answer.Your answer helped me a lot to realize that i dont want to win competitions, i prefer to be happy with the kit i built, how i did it and expose my work in this kind of events to be seen by others.

Chasing what you believe others want to see while not remaining true to your own sense of "right" will only lead to disappointment. A Well presented and helpful video overall. A few detail comments which maybe of use. Wheels wells colour, much debated, but a maintenance film made in June 1940 clearly shows the wheel wells to be, the outer wheel part is underside colour(external area), in every photo I have seen where the outer well is visible, it is the same as the underside. See here th-cam.com/video/-IHSEBsaBdU/w-d-xo.html The inner leg part part is the internal colour, which was at this time, and until late 1943, aluminium paint. The only part in grey-green was the cockpit to the seat bulkhead. Again, shown in the maintenance films. The entry door crowbar is a later addition than this model, and they were never red in the war, period colour photos sh0ow black, natural metal and grey green. For an oil paint panel line wash, try a using a dirty grey, mix black, burnt umber and white. Add shadow, but is not too stark. You can make a really thin, fast drying wash using lighter fuel, the stuff used in Zippos, Also, do this after decalling, as it helps blend the decals in. The AK Dark Earth looks a little light, but this may just be the light used, but there are a a lot of poor matches sold in model paints for RAF colours. Also, well worth a read boxartden.com/reference/gallery/index.php/Camouflage-Markings/Supermarine-Spitfire Hope of interest/use to you and others.
