    Nice! I forgot this kit goes back to 1963. Ahead of it's time. I too have "always had a weakness for the Hells Bells Airacobra". I was saddened when after all these decades that new information discounted the sand and spinach (kit color scheme)as being the correct colors used on the real plane. I wanted to do that scheme of colors for the variety of them. Although I love these RAF colors used here too, the most even, I'm sure! Also I have seen that photo with ground crew standing in front of the "s" on Bells, thus some people today believe it may have read Hell's Bell, with no s at the end. I am also a huge fan of US Army under the wings on period planes. I have had miraculous luck on 50 year old decals using Liquid Decal Film, on decals that wouldn't stay together at all with out it. Nice build and video !

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, way ahead of it's time. Still goes together really well. Appreciate the history lesson you provided. I had never heard that part about the ground crew potentially blocking the "s". I was surprised that the decals worked as well as they did after all these years. Appreciate you taking the time to provide some great feedback and insights.

    These Monogram kits are something special aren't they? Many years ago I built their Me262-absolutely superb kit. Have a P-61 in the stash. Have sold a few that I regret. They are easy to work on, and any fit issues are not difficult to fix.

    Well done, Monogram did have some great models. This acft represents the 67th Fighter Squadron the "Fighting Cocks". This group is still in existence today but due to PC they are known as the " Fighting Chickens". They use the same emblem.

Since watching this well detailed video I’ve moved the P-39 almost to the front of my stash pile but first will develop more skill on a F-6F Hellcat. It’s also a Monogram kit. Monogram was the first model manufacturer to do real scale models, instead of toys. I had the same issue of that Airacobra kit back in 1974 and that model still stands up very well today. As modelers we have been blessed with several great models of the P-39.

    Looks great. Monogram models were so much fun. Back a few more years than this one, back in the early 50's, Monograms models were in balsa. That was really building a model airplane rather than just assembling some plastic. I don't remember seeing a P-39 in balsa.

    Great new opener. Another masterpiece, from a master artisan. Timeless is the hallmark of this definitively once and for all debunk of a post modern-day myth that the best kit is yet to be moulded... Again sir, you show a new and blasse demographic the stuff of model - making magic that ews as real as it is today, as we both know from a simular age related timeline and 1/48 Monogram kits of the 70's. Shephard Paine looms large after all these year's... through your proving and totally revealing builds of that radical era and how it is tbe genesis of the now.

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Christian, as always, your comments are encouraging and thoughtful. It is hard to believe that with what Monogram was pumping out back in the day that they somehow missed an important shift or transition in the business model and/or processes and fell behind. Have a Shephard Paine like diorama for this one would have put it over the top. Maybe I should go that route for the next one :) . Just hope that the community here continues to see that you don't have to get fancy to have fun and produce a decent result. All the best to you and the "harem"!

    • @christiankirkwood3402
      @christiankirkwood3402 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FlyingSModels My reference to Shephard Paine is more a shout out to the era, not your work, which in my opinion is standout material. No need for dioramas. When I think about it his work was hot on the back of model - railways type stuff whereby, as you know, requires the embellishment of dioramas to enrich the subject matter. Your work is standing, static art, more than worthy of our time. I apologize for the inference that you should/could present a diorama, it was quite unintentional and superfluous to the build... which is stand alone magic.

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christiankirkwood3402 No apologies, please. I didn't take it as anything negative. I was actually just thinking and saying that the model really could benefit from a diorama and it's something that I've been wanting to do. Just hard to do everything I want and keep the video production up at the same time. Something to aspire to, too!

I'll have live to be 150 to get everything on the slate done. Filming what happens at my bench is superfluous to my focus at the moment.

    Amazing job and great to see a classic old kit put together so nicely. The old revell-o-gram kit are still my favorites. They take a more versatile skill set to make look great and perhaps more importantly they remind us (me at least) of simpler times.
    You should do up one of the 1:48 b-17s. The G has a lot of detail but the e/f is as classic as it gets. I wish they would re-release some of their German 109s/190s.
    Raised panel lines get a bad rap but some up like this cobra…nothing looks better imho. Great job!

    As a model builder myself, I learned a few tips from the way you do things, compared to the way I do things. Some of your techniques are pretty slick. For me as far as decals go, I usually add them and set them before I weather the model, that way even the decals get some weathering and it matches the weathered areas around where the decal is placed on the model. Yeah that is impressive work on such an old kit. :) I don´t do it myself but maybe I should? alter..
    I am kinda fresh back into it and need to just learn some techniques. It helps making Tamiya kits then.. ;)

      How long do those oil paints need to dry for the panel line washes?
      Really liked how you improved the decals with paint too! Hell´s Bells looked much better that way!

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. Tamiya kits will certainly help build confidence and allow for some good practice working with various painting techniques without getting into bad fit issues and ultimately, frustration and maybe burnout.

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The decals being that old were really bad. They needed some help. I'll usually let the panel line washes dry for about 10 - 20 mins before wiping them off.

      @@FlyingSModels Ah that´s not too bad. I´ve used the Tamiya Panel Line Washes (well, black) and it works nicely. Just need to try oil paints for it too..

      @@FlyingSModels Yeah.I´ve built a couple of Tarangus Viggens in row.. Have an AJ 37 that´s been basically fully built but need painting that had me a little burned out.. Needed quite a bit of filling and so on.. So building a Tamiya is totally different..!

    I really like your videos, sir. Very informative and enjoyable. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques. Can you please provide more information on the sanding files and tools that you use, especially the thin needle file that can be seen from time to time in your videos? Which would be the best cut numbers for rough filing and a more smooth finish?

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback and I'm hopeful that the techniques shared are somewhat helpful. As far as the sanding files, I think I bought those off of Micro Mark years ago. There are various brands but they are all pretty similar. Here's a set that's similar to what I use: amzn.to/3wkkqYR
      Thank you again and let me know if you need anything else.

    Very nice build from an old kit, but did you weather the decals? They look a bit too stark compared to the rest of the paintwork.

      Appreciate the feedback. Been so long since I built this one that I actually can't recall what I did for the decals. Perhaps they are "too" stark.
