    Never ever would I start a try in this conditions. - Never ever.
    This is a brilliant Maneuver . He knows what he has to do. Very skilled.

    Very well done ! People not familiar with the local situation should be adware of the very strong tidal current, funneling of the wind around high dunes and a very narrow entrance to to a busy and exposed little harbour. All this makes entree under sail near impossible

    I've had the very same experience a few times but I always flew my storm jib and use the full power of the diesel engine coming into our narrow passageway to the harbor, it sure put your abilities to the test.

      I sail now for about 14 years, and I have entered this harbour more then 50 times and 5 times with weather like this. Never had problems with entering the harbour.
      Just control your ship and know what ur doing. Every time you do it again, you get some extra experience.
      The most difficult harbour was for me entering the harbour of Borkum. Did that three times with 7 bft and once with 9 bft. Hard to get in, but we made it.

      @@samurai6juingamersz579 Entering a harbor under wrong conditions is at the top of the list of the last maneuvers sailors did prior of termination of boat/sailor's lives.
      It is not about the wind strength, it is about swell status and the depth of the barre.
      As soon as the wave tops are after than your boat there is a tendency them making the skipper becoming passenger and the boat no more following the rudder. The closer to cliffs/walls, ... you are the greater the "fun".
      I sailed for 50 years now without accident.

    Nicely judged....but the cost of a broach or engine failure etc would be the end of his yacht as there's no 'plan B' in this situation.... Though still nicely done...

      Its funny yall and others have made this claim without knowing what the actual.plans were. Maybe just appreciate the visuals of a skipper using his skills to complete a challenging approach. Me personally I would have strapped an acme rocket on each side and skipped across the ocean surface like someone skipping a stone

    On what looks like a port broad reach, a reefed main and / or foresail would have helped stabilise the hull in pitch and roll. It would also have been a back-up against failed mechanical propulsion. He had 5 sail ties on the boom Total faith and reliance on mechanical propulsion with little chance of a plan B. I would have motor-sailed it with a reefed foresail, only 2 ties on the main and the death-wish crew to starboard elsewhere. This was bouncy, but a relatively simple entrance made more dangerous by taking the sails in.

    • @hogey74
      @hogey74 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting perspective. I like/get it. Even just a bit of foresail out might have been sufficient for a controlled approach with idling engine? It's been a while for me, but flying light aircraft involves always having a plan B if the fan stops spinning!

    • @whitefields5595
      @whitefields5595 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hogey74 John, I was a flyer before I was a sailor. (Flying is 3 dimensional sailing). Yes in this breeze I would have gone in with a 50% reefed genoa and an engine in idle on this broad reach. If he got the sail area right he would have done less pitching and more surfing .... that depends on how well he knows his yacht. With some sail up there would be less rolling too. If the engine failed he would still have the foresail to carry him through. Less ties on the mainsail, but probably he would not have enough time to get it up very far anyway as he had very little room. As it is he only had one option, the engine, so a dangerous approach.
