Not so long ago, I was watching a video of someone sitting on an armchair. The comments were mainly boat skippers saying they would have sat differently.
YOU FINALLY DID IT, ALEX...although only 50%....we dont care about the sailing boats GOING OUT TO SEA...whats really interesting and shows the skills of the sailors and skipers is when the BOATS RETURN TO HARBOUR WITH TERRIBLE ROUGH SEAS BY THE STERN....this is when we can all learn how to do it. Please, more videos like th first half of this one..
@Alex Actually, he did a masterful job of lining himself up. The jibe was the result of working past the break. We see he is inside the line once he emerges from behind the jetty. We must keep in mind the perspective camera angle and there most likely plenty of searoom for the maneuver. What looks like hair raising danger to us on shore is really steely nerve seamanship. If he's trailing a sea anchor it could be to weigh down the stern and keep the bow from plowing under when running downwind in heavy seas
But a rather curious choice of sail configuration by the first skipper; course almost a dead run through white water, and he chose main (albeit reefed) and no headsail. Personally I would have expected the reverse; reefed headsail and drop the main, with probably both set up before he bore off onto a run, which could have been many miles previously. Much easier to control, much less risk of broaching, and still as much drive as one wants.

Sang Froid .... rien du tout c’est la vague qu.il l.a roulé dehors .... aucun contrôle, ils ont frôlés la noyade ... on ne rentre pas a contre-courant.
C'est l'empannage intempestif qui l'a mis en difficulté. Je trouve qu'il a bien géré ensuite. Faut quand même pas être sur la digestion dans ce coin ! Merci Alex.
Belle manœuvre du premier skipper qui se sort très bien d'affaire, malgré un bateau pas vraiment fait pour une mer pareille... Je le voyais finir comme une certaine vedette blanche filmée par Alex il y a quelques temps !

Je l'ai pratiqué pendant 3 ans... et chaque fois, il fallait choisir le bon moment pour entrer moteur presque à fond et en surf sur LA vague... Mais depuis la tempête et au vu de la vidéo, il semble que cela aie changé... De mon temps la vague salvatrice était près de môle nord, et il falait la prendre en biais... et ça entrait tout seul... en surf!

Les gars ne sont pas expérimentés surtout: vu les conditions de vent et de mer pour rentrer au port (vent de mer probablement entre 15 et 20 nds donc pas énorme ET mer formée allant dans le même sens que le vent) le skipper aurait du naviguer avec la voile d'avant seule, ça aurait évité l'empannage sauvage qui a failli se terminer sur la digue sans parler de la bôme qui peut tuer celui qui a le malheur de lever la tête au mauvais moment... bref manque d'anticipation sur ce coup mais parfois en voile c'est comme ça qu'on apprend...
Looks like all the sailors know what they are doing, as if they were pretty used and skilled to these situations. Interesting to see how stability increases as the wind grabs into the mainsail. I would be shit scared!
Beau sang froid du Skipper, mais à ceux qui pense qu’il prend des risques inconsidérés je répond que la mer semble très praticable...c’est seulement l’entrée de la passe qui est scabreuse. Il porte la voile du temps, pour appuyer le moteur et son bateau, un ‘Folie Douce’ je crois, est largement assez marin pour ce temps-là. Cela étant dit ça a dû secouer....respect.
Ils venaient de la Rochelle et l'entrée de la passe honnêtement c'était impraticable avec cette houle et les gros coefficient ils auraient pu finir contre le phare il ne faut pas trop jouer avec cette passe quand toutes les mauvaises conditions sont réunies 👈

Telephoto distance compression effect making it look more impressive than it is. No real issues for a somewhat skilled sailor. Imo, the choice of using only the main is correct as a jib only selection would give you considerably less maneuverability. Speed is you friend.
Main sail is power, the gas so to speak. The jib is finesse, direction if you may. The boom gives total control of the foot of the sail. What about the warp he's trailing standard side? That must be to keep the stern in the water thus assure a responsive helm

If that was me coming in, and I've sailed in conditions like that, I'd have had the jib up, with or instead of the main. Masthead rig, jib is where they power is. Main only is unbalanced and wants to push the stern around. The fairway has plenty of room to reduce sail, once you're past the largest breakers. Sailed for 2 seasons out of harbour that was like this in a NW wind, with a rock jetty to the South side that chewed up more than one yacht that lost power at the wrong time.
Thats always my dilemma...in my harbour conditions sometimes get similar to these...with the rough sea by the stern I never know wether to enter the harbour with the jib or the main sail...I usually use the jib becouse I think that the jib tends to pull the boat from the bow so as to avoid turning to the side when the wave catches you and pushes from the stern....but I really dont know and get very confused when reading contradictory advices...that is why I keep telling Alex to show more videos of the sailing boats coming back to harbour instead of going out to sea but he very seldom records the boats entering...I dont know why.
The thing is this guy should had lowered his mainsail and (way before entering the harbour) set a headsail. The risk of a blow jibe due to the he waves is way too big. Believe me, I have been there ....
I think the boat ist an Ecume de Mer the inboarder of not upgraded has only 10hp so that wouldn’t work in these currents and vor an 8m boat it’s quite a lot of wind I would say, so he did quite good
A very close call for the incoming sailboat, he made one mistake not negotiating the pushing in tide to the inlet and the other one pushing laterally. The second attempt was the correct procedure and all well that ends well.
It looks easier on a screen but waves current and wind can be erratic and decisions have to be made in real time, quickly. I think he showed a lot of skill.

That video shows how light weight displacement, square bow, flat hull modern designed boats slam down from even 5-6' waves. That is my I am buying a tradition classic heavy displacement designed sailboat for a smoother entry into waves and more gentle ride.
le premier il est portant sous grand voile, il aurait fallu mettre un foc ou a la limite un génois, cela stabiliserais son bateau, mais sinon belle manœuvre et super vidéo:)
Oui... ...et non! En fait il est plein cul, ce qui cache le foc et le rend inutile. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de vent, et il est sous-toilé’ ce qui ne lui donne pas assez de vitesse. Plein cul sur ces anciennes carènes, ce n’est pas stable du tout, ça va dans tout les sens, et malgré tout, il a pas mal maîtrisé la crise. J’ai eu ce genre de carène, et ce qui se fait maintenant est bien plus sûr.

@@Alex.rolland pour info, Gwezer (le bateau) a fait 2 fois la traverser de l'atlantique nord , la deuxième s'est vu écourté à hauteur de terre neuve... c'est un Jouët Régent de 65 , le 53 ème de sa production qui s'est vu s’arrêter aux 91 ème exemplaire du à un incendie de l'usine . ce bateau, pour une si petite jauge est une dinguerie de performance, encore ajd... défiant des 6.50 au pres ! ( remontant le vent jusqu'à 33 degrés. de ses 3Tonnnes 5, il reste le bateau le plus franc et juste que j'ai connu.... alors merci à lui, Gwezer, ma baleine
0:15 Why does he only have the mainsail set? Wouldn't the jib help balance the boat better? In fact, if he's worried about having too much sail set, wouldn't having just the jib be better than just the main?
je ne suis pas un pro mais je dirais qu’au contraire il est pris par la vague justement parce qu’il n’est pas assez toilé et donc sans assez de vitesse ni possibilité de manœuvre. Ce n’est pas pour moi un départ au lof pour cause de survente. Cdlt.
@@damienprevot6146 Effectivement, après avoir revus 5fois la vidéo, c'est bien une des vagues qui les écarte du droit chemin :D Peut-être qu'avec un ris prit en moins, le bateau auraient été plus stable dans les vagues. Peut-être aussi que si le genois était utilisé au lieu de remettre un ris, le bateau se serait fait tirer un peu plus par l'avant? Et avec des si, ... ;)

Nah, that's the main halyard, stack pack is open and main ready to go up as soon as they pass the end of the pier. The main will balance the boat and provide a better ride while they motor out to the race course.
@@Alex.rolland I live on the west coast of Vancouver Island. We have a lot of treacherous areas as well. The water has to be respected and even a bit feared. It’ll keep you alive.
Arf.... Pas assez de vitesse, pas assez de vent, une vieille carène des années 80, au surf difficile, donc un canote qui se fait rattraper par les éléments avec violence! La pire des solutions, c’est le moteur. Il doit faire 15cv maxi, avec une hélice pour voilier. Rajoutez le brassage du gasoil dans le tank, et hop, panne! Beau contrôle quand même. Dans ce genre de condition, mieux vaut surveiller ses arrières, histoire d’éviter la hyène de vague qui croise les autres, comme celle qui lui fait faire cette superbe embardée... ...je ne suis pas sûr qu’il l’aurait gérée. Les carènes actuelles sont quand même plus faciles!

Juste un rappel .La Gv fait lofer. Le Foc fait abattre . Personnellement je n'irai pas dans ce port surtout avec un 15 CV pour 5 tonnes . A mon sens il faut de la puissance moteur et de la vitesse comme toujours pour être manoeuvrant vrant dans ce type de circonstance. En tout cas la cata a été évitée de justesse et c'est tant mieux
il aurait du conserver un peu de toile à l'avant et ne pas enrouler tout son genois et dans ces vagues un moteur horsbord est inutile. pas de problème avec Inboard.

Ils ont vraiment eu une chance du diable. J’ai navigué une fois sur un 13 mètre en alu avec de creux de 4 m ~ mais moins haché. Pas de soucis. Même sympa à barrer (barre franche !). The skipper towed a drogue to slow the boat down and keep the stern facing the following seas. It can stop the boat surfing or corkscrewing. I do the same thing.

Le banc de sable à terriblement bougé avec des gros coefs à marrée basse au bout de l'estocade c'est une plage 🌴🌴🌴🥴

it is not an easy pass to cross when conditions are complicated duent to the marine canyon
Absolutely. Im perfectly happy running downwind on main only, and the option to round-up is like a getoutofjailfree card.

Tout a fait, grand voile seule = instabilité. La fuite c'est sous tourmentin ou foc1.
Par vent arrière = moteur inutile.

If that was me coming in, and I've sailed in conditions like that, I'd have had the jib up, with or instead of the main. Masthead rig, jib is where they power is. Main only is unbalanced and wants to push the stern around. The fairway has plenty of room to reduce sail, once you're past the largest breakers. Sailed for 2 seasons out of harbour that was like this in a NW wind, with a rock jetty to the South side that chewed up more than one yacht that lost power at the wrong time.

Thats always my dilemma...in my harbour conditions sometimes get similar to these...with the rough sea by the stern I never know wether to enter the harbour with the jib or the main sail...I usually use the jib becouse I think that the jib tends to pull the boat from the bow so as to avoid turning to the side when the wave catches you and pushes from the stern....but I really dont know and get very confused when reading contradictory advices...that is why I keep telling Alex to show more videos of the sailing boats coming back to harbour instead of going out to sea but he very seldom records the boats entering...I dont know why.
The thing is this guy should had lowered his mainsail and (way before entering the harbour) set a headsail. The risk of a blow jibe due to the he waves is way too big. Believe me, I have been there ....

I think the boat ist an Ecume de Mer the inboarder of not upgraded has only 10hp so that wouldn’t work in these currents and vor an 8m boat it’s quite a lot of wind I would say, so he did quite good

A very close call for the incoming sailboat, he made one mistake not negotiating the pushing in tide to the inlet and the other one pushing laterally. The second attempt was the correct procedure and all well that ends well.

@@jmariliou Very true, one has to see the sea conditions and accordingly navigate.
It looks easier on a screen but waves current and wind can be erratic and decisions have to be made in real time, quickly. I think he showed a lot of skill.

I also watch the videos taken at Haulover and no one ever wears a PFD. I live on the west coast of Vancouver Island and everyone wears them.

That video shows how light weight displacement, square bow, flat hull modern designed boats slam down from even 5-6' waves. That is my I am buying a tradition classic heavy displacement designed sailboat for a smoother entry into waves and more gentle ride.

En fait il est plein cul, ce qui cache le foc et le rend inutile. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de vent, et il est sous-toilé’ ce qui ne lui donne pas assez de vitesse. Plein cul sur ces anciennes carènes, ce n’est pas stable du tout, ça va dans tout les sens, et malgré tout, il a pas mal maîtrisé la crise. J’ai eu ce genre de carène, et ce qui se fait maintenant est bien plus sûr.
Il est grand largue.
3 ris et peu de genois déroulé c'est plus stable que grand voile seule. Mais bon c'

Actually, he did a masterful job of lining himself up. The jibe was the result of working past the break. We see he is inside the line once he emerges from behind the jetty.
We must keep in mind the perspective camera angle and there most likely plenty of searoom for the maneuver.
What looks like hair raising danger to us on shore is really steely nerve seamanship.

@@Alex.rolland pour info, Gwezer (le bateau) a fait 2 fois la traverser de l'atlantique nord , la deuxième s'est vu écourté à hauteur de terre neuve... c'est un Jouët Régent de 65 , le 53 ème de sa production qui s'est vu s’arrêter aux 91 ème exemplaire du à un incendie de l'usine . ce bateau, pour une si petite jauge est une dinguerie de performance, encore ajd... défiant des 6.50 au pres ! ( remontant le vent jusqu'à 33 degrés. de ses 3Tonnnes 5, il reste le bateau le plus franc et juste que j'ai connu.... alors merci à lui, Gwezer, ma baleine

je ne suis pas un pro mais je dirais qu’au contraire il est pris par la vague justement parce qu’il n’est pas assez toilé et donc sans assez de vitesse ni possibilité de manœuvre. Ce n’est pas pour moi un départ au lof pour cause de survente. Cdlt.

Nah, that's the main halyard, stack pack is open and main ready to go up as soon as they pass the end of the pier. The main will balance the boat and provide a better ride while they motor out to the race course.

Oulah, ils ont eu chaud! Je suppose que c'est le manque de vitesse du bateau par rapport à la vague qui a fait perdre l'efficacité du safran.
Surtout une mauvaise météo marine avec 112 de coef et marée à contre sens et un gros manque de puissance moteur 🥴🥶

Pas assez de vitesse, pas assez de vent, une vieille carène des années 80, au surf difficile, donc un canote qui se fait rattraper par les éléments avec violence!
La pire des solutions, c’est le moteur. Il doit faire 15cv maxi, avec une hélice pour voilier. Rajoutez le brassage du gasoil dans le tank, et hop, panne!
Beau contrôle quand même.
Dans ce genre de condition, mieux vaut surveiller ses arrières, histoire d’éviter la hyène de vague qui croise les autres, comme celle qui lui fait faire cette superbe embardée... ...je ne suis pas sûr qu’il l’aurait gérée.
Les carènes actuelles sont quand même plus faciles!
Si beaucoup de vent gros coefficient en sens inverse d'où la difficulté

Juste un rappel .La Gv fait lofer. Le Foc fait abattre . Personnellement je n'irai pas dans ce port surtout avec un 15 CV pour 5 tonnes . A mon sens il faut de la puissance moteur et de la vitesse comme toujours pour être manoeuvrant vrant dans ce type de circonstance.
En tout cas la cata a été évitée de justesse et c'est tant mieux

Ils ont vraiment eu une chance du diable. J’ai navigué une fois sur un 13 mètre en alu avec de creux de 4 m ~ mais moins haché. Pas de soucis. Même sympa à barrer (barre franche !). Mais là, avec leur coquille de noix.....

The skipper towed a drogue to slow the boat down and keep the stern facing the following seas. It can stop the boat surfing or corkscrewing. I do the same thing.
