There's a certain comfort in living in a world that's less complex and slightly more predictable than ours. Although there were a lot of social issues that were being ignored at the time, I feel that at least there was a stronger sense of community and camaraderie to make up for it (not that I'm denying the tremendous suffering experienced by those who were arbitrarily deemed outcasts). I don't know, I just wish we could return to a less cynical world where social trust and strong relationships are seen as common aspects of everyday life rather than the anomalies that they are today, without the added close mindedness and harmful group think of the past. Is that too much to ask?
My dad is 74 and when I showed him this he all of a sudden started to remember things from the late 1950s and early 60s haven't seen him laugh like that in a while. Thank you. Addendum. Industrial design was really elegant and slick in the 40'ies and early 50'ies. This was right as it was about to be turned into driving baroque monsters with tail-fins and protruding chrome torpedo's. Not like that did not have a charm of its own. this was just really elegant. I also got to love the round nosed locomotives.
I prefer the "chrome torpedos" far more than the plastic shit we have today. It's a bit better now but the 90'-2000's were a nightmare for industrial disign.

One good thing about the 90'ies You could still get a few of the old cars new back then, like the Mini, Land rover defender, for the first year of the decade they still made The Citroen 2CV, also Peugeot 205 untill 97, Renault R4 and a few other. What do we have left of cool cars still in production today? UAZ and Morgan? Maybe Lada Niva.

It's weird seeing footage like this. As someone who wasn't around for the 50's, seeing the architecture, the cars, the fashion, knowing at one time that it was normal and high tech is just mind boggling to me. Because in my mind, as a 21 year old, the 50's is this surreal age. Surreal in a way that I can only best describe as feeling like an older demonstration of futurism. The entire decade felt like a movie from the 1940's predicting what things would be like in another 100 years, if that makes sense. Which I guess is my way of saying that somehow the 1950's feels futuristic and retro at the same time, almost as though it's an alternate timeline to modern day. In many ways, we're worse off, and in many ways, they're worse off. I guess it's up to individual interpretation to decide which is better. Edit: The 1980's has a very similar feel, as well. But the 80's are also three whole decades closer to modern day than the 50's are, and thus forth feel a lot more grounded in my personal interpretation of reality. It's a much more (for lack, and want, of a better term) soft-core rendition of the feeling that I get from the 1950's, that's exasperated in media such as 80's music, TV and movies. It almost makes me wonder if 9/11 never happened, if we would actually be living in a world more similar to that of the portrayal of the year 2015 in Back to the Future. I mean, probably not, but it still makes you wonder just how far behind we are because of 9/11... it certainly makes me wonder whether or not we're still being held back as a society in the shadow and wake of 9/11.

The barbecues, drive-in movies&cub and girl scouts, lot of baseball and people just relaxing as a whole while under possible nuclear threat and having commie states appearing all over south America. Almost every store closed on Sundays, people feeling more alive because there weren’t phones and all of that crap. The greatest privatized railway, healthiest diverse economy&young population with the newest technology with the greatest minds and unique cultures. America was on top of it’s game, no competition anywhere and everyone felt optimistic for the future and for the prosperity the country would go through. Then the 60’s and 80’s happened…

You cant look at this without getting the sense that the 1950's truly were the high-water mark of human history. That is what the heart of Nostalgia is afterall: A longing for better times.

Damn, 50s we never had. My grandfather is somewhere there watching for US spy planes on a lone radar station somewhere on the USSR western border when life in Manhattan continues as usual.
It's weird seeing footage like this. As someone who wasn't around for the 50's, seeing the architecture, the cars, the fashion, knowing at one time that it was normal and high tech is just mind boggling to me. Because in my mind, as a 21 year old, the 50's is this surreal age. Surreal in a way that I can only best describe as feeling like an older demonstration of futurism. The entire decade felt like a movie from the 1940's predicting what things would be like in another 100 years, if that makes sense. Which I guess is my way of saying that somehow the 1950's feels futuristic and retro at the same time, almost as though it's an alternate timeline to modern day. In many ways, we're worse off, and in many ways, they're worse off. I guess it's up to individual interpretation to decide which is better.
Edit: The 1980's has a very similar feel, as well. But the 80's are also three whole decades closer to modern day than the 50's are, and thus forth feel a lot more grounded in my personal interpretation of reality. It's a much more (for lack, and want, of a better term) soft-core rendition of the feeling that I get from the 1950's, that's exasperated in media such as 80's music, TV and movies. It almost makes me wonder if 9/11 never happened, if we would actually be living in a world more similar to that of the portrayal of the year 2015 in Back to the Future. I mean, probably not, but it still makes you wonder just how far behind we are because of 9/11... it certainly makes me wonder whether or not we're still being held back as a society in the shadow and wake of 9/11.

It sparked up another war that lead into the fundamentally broken America that we know today. America had been on a downward trend since Reagan left office, or even arguably during Nixon's presidency - though I'd be remiss to say that 9/11 didn't have a more substantial impact on the blatant downward trend since it gave people and politicians a reason to change the way we lived our lives.
(Just to clarify - no, I don't think Bush had anything to do with 9/11. If nothing else, I don't think Bush was smart enough to devise a plan such as that NOR do I know what he would have served to have gained from doing so either)

Good question. I sympathize with the Russian despite being a non-Russian. Being led by despots and kleptocrats is such a pain.
