I can only imagine how cool this is going to be when the character is walking around a real level edit: I just tried the demo, and the character controller is soooo good
i think keeping the scope smaller to not over stress yourself or cause the project to get entirely out of hand and abandoned like i’ve seen happen to many other developers is really smart, and you can always add more content once you have the base game finished !!
For the report... I was here when this game wasn't even released (right now). Your game looks so good and appears to have a lot of potential. Amazing work!
The current design (and animation!) of Goobi looks fantastic; Reminds me very much of the kind of platformer character big game studios used to make. Fun, charming and family friendly.
@@R1GBYdev I think it would be cool if the newspaper ammo could also serve as a currency of sorts (or convert to one), that way you are incentivized to waste as little newspaper as possible
Although it is too early to think about it, it would be cool for a boss to be a goat, why? Well, there's that fact that goats (for some reason) like to eat paper, so a goat swallowing letters wouldn't be a bad idea.
The willingness to seek out and iterate on feedback, the quality of the work, the awareness of scope/feature creep, even the freaking testing grounds - you come across as more professional than some AAA Dev teams I've worked with. Keep going this way and you're gonna have an excellent game by the end.
Hey R1GBY!!! The game looks really good and I just love the graphics. I have an idea that maybe make it even better! Maybe you can add new lower parts, like a wheel or like a spring, so you can make interesting combinations and puzzles. You can unlock them with screws (as a collectible) and buy them by a merchant. If u think this is a good idea please like this, so R1GBY can see it.
Holy crap, this is just amazing. As a fellow solo game dev, this shit is so hard but you're such a great inspiration of just how much we as solo devs can do. Good luck with your game and I wish you the best ❤.

I'm so happy to see how far you've come along with your project, and that you're committed to finishing it. Wishing you the best in the future R1GBY! Here's to an awesome 3D indie gem!
Man, I love this video. I've been learning Unity and Blender for the past couple months through courses, and when I started my own game prototype I was struggling with the character controller feeling like it was too basic not to know it but after watching all the effort you've put into a single feature I feel more encourage. I just got to say thanks.
Good luck with the remainder of this project man! Super excited to see the final result once you get around to it! It's been awesome to see how far you've come this past year!
Hello! This was the first ever vid I watched on your channel and I found your vid amazing! But have you thought of adding dogs as a side or main boss? Since your character is a mailman and dogs are known to schread up newspapers. So this could be a cool mini boss in the game. ( you can make it shred your newspaperlaunchers bullets letting you implement a New weapon. P.s keep going Def subbed!
dude this looks really cool! this is the first video of you that ive stumbled across, and i subscribed instantly! i really like those blue platforms that you have to shoot to deploy. i think if you land on them, they should jiggle a little bit. i think it would give them some extra life and a little visual feel! anyways thanks for reading this if you did, don't give up on this dope game! edit: those little blue platforms just look like they would jiggle when you jump on them, just a tiny bit, so that's what made me think of this comment.
This game looks really cool also goobi is one of the best main characters design wise of any 3d platformer he's so fun to watch I can't wait to eventually play no matter how long it takes
*Honest Thoughts:* ➤ It’s always impressive to see Indie Developers choosing to create a 3D Game. I’ll be honest, it’s definitely the definition of over-scope. Your character is interesting as it shows a lot of character. I think the main focus should be the move set for your character. Different abilities, etc. I also think creating three worlds is a fair balance compromise. Everything looks mostly great but there’s definitely a lot more work to be done. I feel that your character does borrow a lot from Super Mario. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just I really want this character to stand out. Think about the robot style. Why not have a Messaging Pigeon be the thing that respawns you? Maybe if the robot touches a certain element. The robot glitches and shuts down temporarily causing the Player to take a breath to relax before continuing. Most games fail this and it’s so important to have an Idle feature as it allows a more balanced experience that can be challenging and calm.
These arew all great points, so I will plan on making goobi the most unique I possibly can. There will be more stuff that makes him stand out closer to when the game releases, so I will just need to to flesh everything out, thanks for the thought!
Just played the Demo right after watching this, so far it looks and plays well. Altough I couldn't shoot boxes right next to me (don't know if I had to have them in the middle of the screen or not). Also I don't understand why every dev puts the default Graphics settings on max, I put them on low manually but it took a bit of time because it did lag a bit. Overall, you're doing great! Keep on going.
I have a question: do you plan on making the game's source code public? Like to mod it and stuff? Because the game is awesome (I tried the demo) and it's always awesome to see what the internet comes up with to tweak games to give them personal twists.
I saw a lot of solo dev 3D platformer make great movement and than die when creating actual levels (for example ZeroTag by Robert Thomson). I think making good levels are the hardest part of making a platfromer. I wish you the best and rooting for you to be able to do it! :)
There's a game called Tinykin (Sort of like Pikmin) and in that game the player can collect letters and post them in a mail box. Maybe you can make an "End Goal Colelctable" similar to Crash Bandicoot's Crystal system where if you collect a certain amount of Letters in the level, Gooby can post the letters into the mail box and send them away. And each letter can be used as a level up or unlock certain abiites etc to give the player an incentive to collecting letters around the map.
Scope management is the single most important thing in game development. And I'm not even kidding. Scope creep probably kills the most games, out of all the problems that could occur.
If goobi shoots newspapers.. you could change the hit effect to newspaper explosion particles. Also, consider having them return as isn't he supposed to be delivering them? Finally with a returning projectile mechanic, you could implement puzzles or challenges that make the player think about how to use a limited number of projectiles. All in all, looks good, best of luck. 🙂
Played the demo, it feels *fantastic* to play. Legitimately better controls than most AAA platformers. The dive mechanic feels great to use, and getting extra height from the spin mechanic is great. I love seamless integration of camera rails in some parts of the level, eg. collecting the stamps in the small nook in one of the walls, it feels very seamless. After I collected all of the stamps I found myself just running around the level for no reason at all just because the controls were so fun to use. Getting some tactile feedback with controller vibration was a nice touch, reminded me of Astros Playroom. Character animations tied into the movement mechanics perfectly. The change to the shooting mechanic was a great call, not having to aim means the shooting mechanic doesn't get in the way of the platforming, instead it complements it really well. My main criticism is I think the hat gliding mechanic should either automatically start if you keep holding the jump button (perhaps only if there is some distance between the character and the floor, ie. only auto activate if jumping over a gap), or maybe mapped to a different button. Having to release and repress the B button to start gliding after jumping felt unintuitive and made timing jumps and glides awkward. Overall really excellent, the gameplay has a great flow to it and the character controls are not clunky at all and very responsive. I look forward to what you do next. Adding some good levels with nice themes and aesthetic, I think you have what it takes to make a killer 3D platformer for sure.
thanks for the kind words! So yah the gliding has been a pretty common critique, i’ve fixed in the project to activate A LOT quicker, so it should feel a lot better. Hopefully i’ll have enough time to update the demo so you and others can give it another shot. And thanks for the support and feedback!
I know I've asked this question on some of your other videos, but now that you have some more experience creating a 3D Platformer Character Controller, I feel like you can answer some of my questions a bit better. (Also I already know that repeated testing is required to get movement that feels good) How did you create your 3D Platformer Controller in Unreal Engine? What did you use as a base?
I spent the past year working on it and perfecting it, I originally use the Thirdperson template, but then made my own which worked a lot better. I tweaked and changed a lot of things to make it feel as good as it can

I remember one bug I found in your demo V1, when taunting and if I press a button to move the same time, when taunting, I could move around when sitting down, the input had to be done very fast to do this. I enjoyed your first demo. The import thing I remember to save files in my emails Drive, just encase something bad happens.
I would love to see you coming up with some new concept or improve something that already exist but well. the character sure got a lot of potential to waste with the main mechanic being "shooting" That old Willy coyote (sheep rider) game and Bugs bunny + Taz have awesome elegant mechanics that make the games standing out even today, there are a great source inspiration.
Suggestion: When gliding, currently the entire hat expands in size which i find distracting as it looks as if the character is sized down.
