such a cool piece of police car history

- this old 68 coronet highway patrol car is a cool piece of police history when the chaser and the chase' were on the same playing field, both big block high horsepower muscle cars. in just 4 short years after this car the HP number were cut in half and the squad cars gained 500lbs
It's got a cop motor, cop tyres, cop suspension, cop shocks... cars got good pick up.
8k is an amazing price for an intact squad car. Congrats to the new owner!
Just for context; $250 in 1972 is about $1900 today with inflation. Back then it was probably a running driving car. Now the motor won’t turn and it probably needs a complete restoration. I guess “amazing price” depends on whether you are paying - or getting paid. It’s what the market will bear, anyway.
And that is the crazy thing about the older cars now. They are becoming harder to find and people are willing to pay more.@user-bt6hh9yu1n
In the early 80s I had a stash of police cars from Monaco's,diplomats to even a dart !
Wow that is a bad ass car. I wish we could watch someone restore it.
The old Mopar cop cars rule! Back when I was 13, the county I lived here in Nebraska-the Sheriff and 3 Deputies drove 70 440 powered musclecars, the Sheriff had a dark green 70 Charger R/T, one Deputy had a Hemi Orange 70 Coronet R/T, another a Plum Crazy 70 Super Bee, and there was another one. All had the 2 red lights on the light bar. It was a pretty cool time. Most of the cop Mopars around here were C Bodies, better highway cars. Any B Bodies were usually used in towns. I drive a 71 Polara , 2 dr hdtp, ex-Nebraska State Patrol car. I found it in a salvage yard, it sat quite a few years. Got it back on the road in 2014 and have put 16,000 miles on it the last 10 years. It has the correct light bar withthe red lights and the long whip antenne. It's got TTI exhaust and a NOS Thermoquad and a 2.76 SureGrip for Interstate driving. It's so much to drive and everyone loves it.
In 1968 we were headed from Ft Dix to Philadelphia International Airport in a stretched Checker station wagon. I happened to notice that a car was keeping pace beside us in the multilane traffic, it had a neon-type light in in drivers rear side window that the officer could turn on - "PULL OVER" with lights above deck on rear seat. The drivers side door in white block letters said: Pennsylvania State Police Turnpike Interceptor. He was running a 426 hemi. A Corvette blew by us in traffic and it sound like the hemi was going to suck the hood through the carburetor. Several miles down the Corvette puked out in a cloud of steam.
Lies
@@ksmith1298 How can you be sure of that? Even if it should not be entirely true or a bit exaggerated, no need to be a troll.
I don’t think ANY law enforcement agency ran a 426 Hemi, nope 👎🏼
@mrdiplomat9018 you might be right but it was impressive. Might have been a Fury 1
@@beatglauser9444 , I doubt if it had a Hemi , 440 at best , Hemis' were unreliable for police use , good call.
My uncle was a state trooper for Louisiana, and a roadrunner passed him doing 113 mph My uncle turned around and caught up with him, it was a 73 ford galaxie 500 with a 429
When I was arrested back in 1969, I rode in the backseat of a '68 Plymouth Belvedere...is that close enough?
When I was a teenager we used to go to cop auctions to see if they had police cars with 70-80,000 miles and were considered at the time to be wore out. I was never able to purchase one but saw some mighty cool Mopars. The best ones were special Hwy Patrol 440 cars with all the goodies. Nice that you found this one and found and owner. If ya got the bucks to to a rotisserie restoration, this would be a good one to do.
Our troopers run the police package Chargers. They’re extremely fast. Dodge discontinuing them is so lame.
Great potential on that car. Glad you were able to sell it for your money 💰.
I work for and have been around all kinds of celebrity people but the thrill of my life was actually meeting Chris Birdsong in my hometown of Barstow him and his buddy we're parked sitting in the general they had a trailer with a race car on it, realizing he's a busy guy I pulled up and said hi I enjoy your videos keep them coming, he gave me that Chris bird song smile. I'm telling you that is too cool for school.
Who needs a pickup truck when you can haul everything with a General Lee, yeeee haaaw
That is so cool. We had 440 Grand Fury cop cars in Canada.
It's cool when you see a person that knows a hot rod from a restoration.
I had a '68 Belvedere 4 door but it was just a granny car with a 318 , so I had a poor boy muscle car , that Police car on the other hand NEEDS to be restore to original.
Second car I ever owned was a 69 Coronet 4 door, great car. Mine however was just a 318, but being in high school auto mechanics, i added a few upgrades to give it a bit more power.
Had a lot of fun in that old beast.
My dad had one back in 72, we took it every where . Some how he made a tent for the trunk to be open and we slept in it. Mom Dad an myself, yes you can get 4 dead bodies in the trunk lol. I remember sitting between them no seat belt and racing guys. Thanks for the memories forgot all about that car.
Check out how many of these were in the original Gone in 60 Seconds man! Toby Haliki bought like 100 to crash in the film. Still cry for the sublime green R/T 71 Charger they rolled the garbage truck on top of! Besides Adam 12 had all the cool cop cars like this too.
I have several B-body 4 door sedans and they are staying the complete sedans that are daily driven. Ain't nobody going to be parting out those cars.
You always deliver Chris . I am sure there will be more Classics heading your way . keep up the good work young Man !
Chris....I am jealous of the FIG Tree....Man what a pain to get them to grow in the Northern mid west where I live. I hope you are enjoying those FIGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the Coronet!
That was a good choice I hope that 68 gets the Royal treatment it deserves. It is so rare to see a 68 any make that is untouched police car.
Don’t forget the 360* steering wheel horn ring. Certified speedo!larger brakes, heavy shocks, A/C cutout switch , big radiator etc. and in rare cases a persuit auxillery fuel pump system, heavy duty charging system.
My dad bought a 77 Plymouth Fury Cop Car. He was high bidder on it. It had a 440 engine, it had the certified 150 mph speedo. It had power steering with a power steering cooler, and a 100 amp alternator. The back doors would not open up from inside. It had a crappy Thermoquad carb on it. The floats were problematic. Sometimes when you went around a sharp turn it would shut off due to the fuel bowl on that side running out of fuel. I put a Edelbrock 750 carb on it and it ran much better. My brother was taking an autobody shop class at school and they painted the car light blue. 7 mpg in that boat.
At that time 440’s only made 220hp and in a heavier car. They were slugs
Watched as a 68 cruiser’s drive train disintegrate while chasing a corvette. There was a lot of noise, smoke and then parts on the road. That cop had a history of really bad luck. Somehow lost his revolver while chasing a criminal. A couple of years after that he accidentally shot himself in the foot. Everybody in town called him “four toes”. Surprisingly he survived long enough to retire.
It sure is intact and unmolested, I think it was a fair price. Chris I am 61 and back in the day we were chased down by police in Sattelites from 68 all the way to 74, they had Sattelites in our area, and the lights were in the grille, we called them under cover cops, brings back some memories.
How cool to have 4 doors and a big block. I reckon it surprised a few cars back in the day. 👍
383 Mopar BB! My favorite engine ever made! That purple camshaft,duals,4bbl...best sound ever to me,even over an old Hemi !! Torque and feel of it with a 727,3 or 4spd! Just the best scratch for my personal itch,Ever!
Someone who appreciates the rarity of that car got a bargain. I really hope they don’t just pull off the police spec parts and junk the rest, it deserves to be restored and left intact as a part of history.
Even more rare would be an original 68 taxi cab. Great car bro.
Most old police cars from that era had the motors yanked and were probably crushed.
They usually became tow cars for boats or campers since the police spec brakes and engine made them perfect, or went straight to taxi companies who drove them into the ground.
Cool piece of history
My friend High School had a 67 GTX his father worked at a Chrysler dealership 440
My dad was a part time police officer. As such, he was able to order a 1968 Dodge Coronet 440 police wagon! It was equipped exactly the same as this car, but my dad was able to get metallic medium blue paint with a matching blue interior. He also got regular vinal bucket bench seats for the front, but the rear bench was all cop. Used to ride in the car with my mom when we went to the store. Sadly, she never let that car have its true potential.
Don’t forget to white steering wheel so it doesn’t get too hot to touch
Reminds me of the original home in 60 seconds movie from 1974!👍👍👍
When I was a kid we had a 68 polara wagon with that same motor, except it had the dual snorkel air cleaner. It was two tons of fun.
Respect and knowledge
So many would have parted it out
It’s wild that it made it all these years and stayed intact! Cool piece of history
Chris, your intro is priceless! Love the mullet!
What a cool car!! Thanks!
Back in the day we made taxi cabs out of old cop cars! Mostly here in NY trouper cars.
Like what you do, keep it up. Excellent job on Mayhem, consider convincing Finnigan to foot the bill for giving Death Metal the "Super Bee-ter" treatment. Seems the perfect canidate
How do you NOT love a Cool Old 60's Police Ride..
That is a time capsule being as it’s mostly intact and still part of the Motorola. Speed enforcement back then was also done with stop watches.
Reno PD has a 68 coronet fully restored for parades. Super clean car. Too bad I can't post a pic of it here.
The Gold Charger in the backgournd - My first car was a Gold with White vinyl top'69 Charger R/T 440 mag with Hurst shift manual posi rear - good times.
C body cop cars fear nothing....NOTHING!!
as a kid I dropped a 400+ HP 455 in my 76 Cutlass S , with the factory highway gears it was scary fast , would try to break the 295/50s loose doing 70MPH at about ? a little over 2000 RPM ... it gave me a whole new respect to the old big block police cars
Thats a cool piece of history
The car has assets. It has a lot of aesthetic appeal, too. I'm really digging the tail ights and that Grill work looks a lot like the charger 500
I have had to access my fleet too and get rid of some cars for the better good.
Great Video again
Bad Mother Flower In It's Prime!!🤙
Such a cool piece of history. I really hope it will get restoration that it needs. A muscle car with all the doors 😎
I had the opportunity to buy nearly the exact car, that was originally from Monterey, CA in turquoise. Tan interior, rubber floor mat. Someone had already stripped the dash of the speedometer etc. Lots of spare parts, 383 H-code, auxiliary coolers. Ended up being purchased by a well known parts vendor, who parted the car out unfortunately.
Back in the day when most of the Police mechanics side hustle was building race cars on the weekends and the parts they were designing/building didn't hit the aftermarket 5 minutes after they were introduced to the police market......
Aaahhhwwwuuummmpphhh would be the proper description of a big old 4 bbl carter opening up fully lol
Have u seen nick’s garage 70 challenger?
Cool classic. Thanks for sharing the info and price. Seems pretty fair for the "right" buyer.
Hey Chris thank you for the video
My Mom had a '67 4 door Belvedere with a 273 engine that I got my driver's license on, and now every time when I watch reruns of Adam 12 and they are in a '69 Belvedere I can't stop thinking how cool it would be to own a plain looking '68-'69 4 door one like that with a 440 six-pack or 426 hemi under the hood to have for an everyday street rod sleeper, or maybe create a 4 door Roadrunner clone? 🤔
Serpico 1152 if u watch the first season of Adam 12 there's still a lot of 1967 belvedere cop cars in use
@@Brianscoronet Yes I had flashbacks of my Mother's car when seeing those '67s on some of the earlier season 1 episodes, I was strictly GM during my muscle car days back in the 60s & 70s owning a '64 Impala 327 SS & a '67 Chevelle 6 cylinder to 396 conversion, and I've never been much of a Ford person unless it was about a '68 Mustang fastback like the one use in Bullitt or a '68-'69 Boss 302, but I always admired the looks of the Mopar '68-'69 Chargers & Roadrunners, back when we wouldn't have even looked twice at a 4 door Belvedere, but I'd die to own a nice one now, man those were the best of times during the late 60s. 🙂
OK I got ask Chris who is Dammit Derek is your wife brother or a cousin .and how long has he been helping you with all your cars you work on .
good for you .. rite desision..
A police car in New Zealand in 1968 was probably a Holden with a 186ci inline 6 cylinder.
8k wow good price
I have a 68 Coronet 500 without the ugly grille. Hey I've seen those 68 Coronets on "Ironside"....Eve ooooo best looking police woman ever!
Mortske Repair would have that thing unstuck and doing donuts in no time :)
Not this engine…
@@junkerup bummer. My dad might have drove one of those cars back in the day. I don't remember what brand Detroit used in the late 60's.
With no kickdown linkage!
My diesel teacher always said it's locked up tighter than a bull's ass at fly time
Blue Dots is what I’ve heard them called
Police cars were parts cars back in the day not many around in this condition for sure
I need the big drum brakes. I'm thinking maybe a C Body car might work for my 68 sport satellite 383 4spd sure grip car.
Chis, that chopped up B body next to it made me wonder. Do you still own Bahama Mama ?
Would like to know same
No, sold to a buddy
@@junkerupI have 2 chargers but I really loved Bahama mama. I still go back and watch those vids.
@@junkerup Now it's Damn it, Chis instead of Damn it Derek 🤣
@junkerup Damn it Chris lol
Same in Australian valiants k.coode was police code
As soon as I saw it I knew it was a 68 Coronet. Mine was dark green with factory A/C.
That's what I'm saying and I've been bugging you about is the only way I'll be able to drive a 68 like charger is to find a b-body floor pan and chassis like a Dodge St Regis or Cordoba, and weld one of those rust bucket chargerbodies like you have laying around on to it, I wouldn't be doing it to trick someone or selling it for huge money I would just do it for my own reasons most people wouldn't know ,you would probably notice in 10 seconds that it wasn't a real charger chargers didn't come with a Corinthian leather interior, lol
thanks for the store
I'll buy it!
Derek needs to get a police car and see if he can catch your General
What a perfect sound effect of those 4bbrls!!!😂 Whopp Whaa..
🍀Cool 👀✌️
my Dad remembers hearing those 440 cornet and polara cop cars getting on the freeway, also is that a volt gauge under the dash? I heard that all the cop cars had them because they didn't want the cars to have amp gauges because they were a problem.
Paint it up as a
One Adam-12
So, is this the new Blues Mobile, or what? -Elwood
Its about 6 years too old and not a monaco do you see the light now jake ?
My apologies, I'm not a Mopar expert, and haven't seen the movie in years. I bow to your expertise. "It was a joke."
@@odahithedubious2017 gotta be careful we are a cult afterall lol
6:00 actually I dont even think this thing was correct for vanishing point, I think this is far more adam 12, and on that show when they were done with the cop cars, they crushed them, so I hope the guy really does fix it up and do it right, as this is more likely a 1 of 1, as no one saved those, and I wouldnt be the least bit surprised to find it show up in a cop museum down the road
Best cop car still is the 69 dodge polara CHP
100%
That has the same front end as a charger 500,
How cool was the scene in Dirty Mary,Crazy Larry when Hank gets his new car
And he asks What's his top speed or HP?,and the mechanic says "Un límited!"👍
👍Cool but if I remember correctly, before he closes the hood, you can see the distributor in the back...Small block...Still pretty cool for those who don't know.
Dual exhaust ??
Yeee Yeee!
ye can tell what ye want the 68 Coronet IS the best looking Coronet year,
btw. this car is a braw, I'd love tae own one of these original K cars.
In many places when they sold a Cop car the siren was removed before the auction. They would reuse them
Aww didn’t think of that good point
But can it jump a bridge or drive underwater? Not being the 440, maybe not.
That engine is locked up tighter than……ya know. 😂
Alcatraz ?
Fix the cigarette lighter.
All of those old cop cars like this one were good parts donors. I was one of those guy parting them out along with all of the big 440 powered C bodies. Cop cars do nothing for me other than donate their parts.
Where is old police car located
But did you TRY to even see if it had movement?? I've seen much older engines end up turning and running after sitting for much longer.
Yes we did, that was one of the deciding factors
Has anyone seen the cleetusmcfarland proline hemi engine. Holy mopar 5,000 hp is there goal. Wtf
🦅🇺🇸💪😎👍
Hows Vlad??
120 MPH speedo?????????
335 horsepower 🤣
