'The Generator' is a metaphor for God. Brett: "The vibe that I'm trying to give is like, if you've ever been in a room and the air conditioner's humming. You don't notice it, of course, because it's a constant hum. Then it turns off and you suddenly notice how quiet it is because it went away. That's the generator; it's just behind everything. It's funny, God and spirituality has been the central conflict of my entire life."[1]
"It's a song about my concept of god (...) the hammer, window, knife etc. are prose and I don't feel it's appropriate to give you my personal intention, although like any art there is a definite 'meaning' I'm trying to convey. If Generator makes you feel something when you listen to it real loud than chances are you understand it just fine."
Brett on using a quote from Stephen Hawking in the lyric booklet for Generator: "Generator (the song) is kind of about man's duality, namely his spiritual and material sides. And Stephen Hawking...it seems to me that the role of physics today is almost the role of religion in days gone by, in terms of when they're looking at the beginning of the universe, they're almost trying to explain or discover the mind of God."[2]
Brett: "It's about the ineffability of existence."

I love how Chuck sits through the first 1/4ish of the song like a fucking rock until the musical breakdown and then just kind of reacts with a "what the fuck just happened there?"
Chuck gets the brain cell today! You could just see the brain cell kick in!

This is my favourite Bad Religion song and it's also one of my top 10 favourite songs of all time.
Although the original is best, the band mixes the song differently on stage and add some rock.progression. There's also an incredible acoustic version as well. This is such a versatile song that can be covered and redone in so many different ways. It's almost a perfect song.

This whole album was so brilliant. Next to the subsequent (& weird but still good) Recipe for Hate, this album was borderline thrashing, in a good way. But this album did feature more midtempo songs. Atomic Garden is another amazing BR changeup.

@@gpro22sweet! I love it! I do think that Brian was just fucking around a little between songs and was getting ready to jump into Parallel, Greg just fucked up and jumped into Generator and somehow the band just jumped in with the right chords and perfection was created. That's what I like to believe, anyhow! A perfect "the show must go on" moment.

Generator is about the hum and the buzz and the energy you feel everyday in the background that Brett and Greg feel May be God. They said this in some video interviews. My favorite lyric is the beginning. Like a rock, like a planet, like an effin atom bomb
