Flying-fox had an xray: Portia visits Adrian

- Portia was rescued when she was found hanging out over a garage door inside the garage.
She was a little annoyed at being captured but quickly ran out of mojo as the stress of her accident and capture sank in.
24 hours after rescue, Adrian was able to manage an xray to make sure she hasn't broken anything during her little contretemps with fate and inner city architecture.
I left in most of the chat, since people seem to enjoy the relationship I have with Adrian over batty vet care.
No fractures; Portia is a survivor; YAY.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

What a sight to see little Portia doing big wings! Thanks Adrian...for taking care of all the batties you see! A note about overalls Meg. We brought in overall scrubs for our specialty units. Pockets are wonderful....however, after over 12 hours without a pee break, they become a straight jacket when you can't get them off fast enough!🙄🤣🤣🤣😳...😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
My only complaint about them
My complaint about them is that if the toilet is grungy (and pee on the floor), the overall straps have to be carefully rolled up otherwise you get pissy straps.
Cross the straps and tuck them inside the opposite leg of the overalls. That has always worked for me. Lol
@@l.mcmanus3983 I generally twist and tuck them both into a pocket (there are lots of pockets otherwise I wouldn't be wearing them)
Oh little sassy pants! She had me fooled till she was hanging on the robe! 😂
I' m so glad Portia is doing so well, now I can go to sleep!!!
Good to see she's getting a bit of her sass back with those gorgeous batty big-wings XD
Yay survivors!
Pretty Portia, Magnificent Meg, and Adorable Adrian - what a Super Sunday delight!
Meg,you are such a wonderful lady always such a healing voice for 🦇 to heal. Thank you to all. ❤❤❤
“Well, can you do a pee for me, and don’t fly.”
Spoken like every long term care nurse everywhere, ever. 😂
Well asking her not to fly was an afterthought really - I just didn't need her crashing into things around the living area, and her swipe at me indicated perhaps she was better than she seemed.
Bats are cuter than dragons, but breathe fire when they want to. Perfect example is Gelert. Portina was rarin' to go as Adrian said. Thanks to both of you and your devotion to bats.
Good luck to Portia!!
❤❤ Miss Portia is beautiful... 😊😊😊
Little Miss Portia! Showing off her wing. 😊❤️🦇
Little Miss Portia doing bigwings at me
Watching you treat these winged cuties 😍 is so wonderful. Thank you so SO much for all your hard work. ❤️
So much dedication and genuine love for these wonderful animals is so heartwarming ❤️👍🏼👋🏼🇩🇪
I love Survivors and Adrian.
Thanx to Dr. Adrian! I love that you have more than 1 shade of purple! ☮️💜🦇
I bought the dyes so I could get graded colours in pastels. I used to change my colour every few weeks.
@@Megabattie when I go gray enough, I'll probably bleach it all and throw a few streaks of lilac or lavender in for good measure.
@@lesal.1373 I will probably add colour streaks; if I went silvery grey I'd keep it, but blondes tend to go wishy washy dishwater grey which has no redeeming features.
I'll stay blonde and add colours for when I have the urge.
@@Megabattie I have dark, golden, brown hair. Went silver at my temples in my 40s but a few yucky yellow gray strands are coming in so...
@lesal.1373 I was an incredibly blonde child who turned into a dishwater blondish adult and now my natural colour has no redeeming features at all and makes my hair look dirty; as a concession to my vanity I became bottle blonde; it's the only alteration/make up fakery I use, except I do actually get pedicures because I like pretty toes and my feet are further away than they used to be I tell myself that's because i'm getting taller, though since I still can't reach anything I suspect the world is getting more taller-er around me; that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Yay! I love seeing the survivors.
Euw, more nycteribiids. I think Adrian killed the nasty spider (rightly). People with dogs don’t want venomous spiders in the yard. I love that Batzilla flicks the nycteribiids into spider webs. I like the orb weavers. Thanks for keeping us updated with Portia, Meg. 💙
We love you, Meg!
She's so gorgeous, so pleased she's ok. You and Adrian are absolute Stars xxx❤
Yay Portia! I love that she’s feeling better and she had some attitude, glad that the x-rays didn’t show anything! Adrian is so wonderful for helping you with the bats!! He is a great guy! Adrian is my dad’s name. Thanks Meg for everything you do, and all the wonderful rescuers!💕🦇💕🦇💕
Adrian is a very special find and I guard access to him jealously and zealously.
I don't tell other carers about him in case they use up any of my Adrian time. Other carers can find their own pet vet. Adrian is MINE.
😂😂 I don’t blame you, I would too!!! 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇 I never would’ve thought three or four months ago that my FAVORITE TH-cam channel would be Megabattie, but it is!!!!! The beauty of these awesome creatures and the beautiful way you take care of them even the ones that do not survive you talk so lovingly to them, it drew me in immediately. 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇
@@dazylulu1832 LOL I'm glad you've found a daily channel to follow.
Its good to hear furvoux is doing well now.
Amd I'm glad portia is too. Thank you Meg and Adrian ❤❤❤
Consider yourself big winged Meg! 🤣❤️🦇🇨🇦
I consider myself both bigwingsed AND admonished simultaneously.
Well done Meg!!! your a Legend! you should get a cape, or large bat wings I'm not sure. Just love watching your videos
🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇
Thanks Meg!💕 I am so very happy to hear after Dr. Adrian's Xrays of Portia, that nothing is broken or fractured!!🩶🦇🦄😃💕 Nice hearing a lady I admire(you) talking about another lady I admire(Mrs. Batzilla)& her helping feed the Orb Spider.🕷️🥰
I love Batzilla.
@@MegabattieYou are two of my favorite Bat Rescue Ladies, honestly!!🦇💕The first I viewed was Batzilla, love that name, then you reached out because you liked the fact that I use my actual name for email address. There are other lovely lady Bat Rescuers but you two are my favorites. Thank you both so very much!!🥰
Love that you fell in love with batties no matter whom you saw first.
If you use your own name (and comment a lot) I can remember you more easily.
There are lots and lots of batty rescuer/carers with varying degrees of likeability and online presence; all that matters is that we do our best for the batties and keep their welfare first priority.
@@Megabattie You're amazing Meg and I THANK YOU so very much!! I love ALL Bats!🩶🖤🤎🤍♥️🤓🦇🥰
Good video thanks for sharing.
I read the comments and I have no better words. Thank you.
I ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT CARING FOR BATS AND THE HARD WORK THAT GOES INTO REHABBING. YOUR CARE AND DEDICATION IS INCREDIBLE. ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO AND THANK YOU. ❤️🇨🇦🌹😎
Thanks Robert
Oooh, I like the idea of feeding bat flies to the Golden Orb spider ! Nice symbiotic relations.
I almost wish I had a Golden Orb for the same purpose.
@@Megabattie maybe you could put a request out on the nearest web - and I don't mean the internet 😍😎
Bad, bad pun!
@dyanalayng5507 I love Dad puns; I miss my Dad's excruciatingly bad puns...
I love good news🦇🥰Hope Portia recover soon.
She did, has recovered, and is doing just fine and on track for a hard release this week.
"Because she is a class act." And so she is.
"Bite me at your own peril." Adore that she is feisty.
Do bats have "funny bone" problems in their arms like we do ?
So good to see a survivor!! Thank you to all the team.
They don't appear to but how would we know? It's not like they could tell us.
Maybe the elbow cap (I'm calling them elbotellas) prevents any banging of the nerve over the bone of the elbow.
😀
❤
Well Portia has turned out to be a character..Cracked me up when she took a swat at you with her big wing..
I was quite surprised at that swipe; she's a funny girl.
I love this girl…she has quite the personality for still being tense and wary. Excellent bigwings, with a sharp slap for emphasis. She gives a good side eye too, and all in silence. She woke up quick and alert. What was Adrian doing with the intriguingly named paints? Glad Portia is undamaged, she is a classy beauty.🥂🖤🇨🇦
Adrian was going to dye Sage's tail while she was under sedation; Sage is his partner's Papillon. But the test was cancelled so it didn't happen.
Adrian has learned about dying her tail by trial and error; he said it didn't last long, so I said - so did you read the instructions? And he replied: MOI??? A man? A vet? of course not. Now he's a lot better at it and if it's quiet at the practice they dye her tail and give her coloured flooff.
@@Megabattie Awww that is very sweet. What is it about men and instructions anyway? Richard once called me in hospital to ask me how the washing machine works. I started telling him which buttons to push, and said, “you know, the instructions are in the cupboard right above it”, and he said “yeah, but I figured you would just know.”, so I talked him through it.🖤🇨🇦
Richard knew how to cut through the instruction confusion.
You can ask someone and not have to read the reams of "what ifs" and options.
Just ask someone what particular settings takes out all the trial and error and guess work.
I approve of Richard's reliance on you for sensible instructions; some men would just wing it and leave you with the mess.
@@Megabattie You make a very good point there…he WAS a smart man, thank the Gods.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 indeed
Oh, you've got a drawer full of Directions hair dye 😀. I've used these in the past, what a mess it always was... haha...
It's an organic dye, something asian. Of course Adrian didn't read the directions the first time he did it.
Will Portia move on and be released? Or will she get the full buffet treatment thrue the cold season?
Would you believe the "elbow cap" is called the "ulna sesamoid" (or occasionally the "ulnar patella" for its resemblance to the "knee cap" patella). Bats are the only mammals to have them. Mammals are full of sesamoids, bones embedded in tendons, with a bat typically having around 23, a human 46, and a dog 66. Think of them as "pulleys" that help the tendons move smoothly. Sesamoids typically don’t get names of their own, instead borrowing the name of the ordinary bone they pass over. They develop as tendons are strained so not every possible sesamoids is present in every specimen of a particular mammal, and their lower density makes many of them difficult to visualize on an x-ray. Oh, and the name does indeed come from their resemblance to. sesame seeds.
Thank you for finding this; I did a brief search but without any great commitment, and was annoyed that it wasn't easy to find.
I was going to call it the elbotella. I know it's a sesamoid "bone" but I hadn't investigated further. It lengthens the tendon and pulls it further away from the bone which increases the efficiency of the tendon by about 30%.
Anyway I'm quite annoyed with myself for not noticing this earlier than 17 years into my fascination with batties.
Reptiles have elbotellas as well; I think I like my name for them better than ulnar sesamoid, and has more of a lilt and pleasing sound (and one fewer syllable).
Pockets are the best!
you never know when you'll find a baby dragon or an egg...
@@Megabattie right! Gotta be ready!
@@missnaomi613 Exactly. Or even a baby bat; pockets are an indispensable fashion accessory
Could the bat flies cause a problem similar to fleas debilitating dogs. Or even spread disease in a colony. So glad to see another yet successful rescue Meg .
They don't seem to have any deleterious effect on them except they scratch more. I guess if they had a heavy infestation they'd lose some blood and get a little anaemic.
I don't like spiders...phobic especially venomous ones.
Roxanne Sharbono, thank you for your comment about spiders. It warned me to listen, rather than watch this video as I have a terrible phobia. Just the conversation they were having about spiders was freaking me out. LOL
@@donnadixon289 no problem.
Hi Donna and Roxanne
There were no spiders in the video just the chat Adrian mentioned his encounter with a RB. Sorry about your phobia but there were no visual spiders.
@@Megabattie Gee Meg, I sure didn’t expect you to respond about the spider conversation. You’re too considerate.
@@Megabattie I was referring to the talk
Love you Meg but please keep your toilet seat down, I worry you're gonna drop the poor batties down there!
I've never dropped a bat into the toilet in 17 years; I've never dropped anything into the toilet in 17 years (or ever).
I guess the toilet stays as is, because I like it that way.
Adrian want a stink bug from Michigan United States.
Adrian goes girly over bugs; weirdly, so does vet Lydia who even squeals.
thx doctor
