It might make a difference for you. It will go into 8th gear sooner and hold it better, which should make a difference. What diff do you have? 3:92 or 3:55? I have the 3:55 rear diff so my RPMs at 65mph are around 1400-1450 once I hit 8th gear. If yours aren't that low, you probably have the 3:92 rear diff.

Yep still have it. I've posted a dozen or so videos since this. I don't see this mpg often but if I'm in a longer trip I can achieve it when I try. I just did a 158 mile trip and got 26.5mpg and that included some City driving. It's been a great truck though.
@@GlennPearsonDIY been looking at a 2016 EcoD with around 105000, should I be worried about engine longevity? Clean truck, any recommendations on a fair price?
@@bronshaller667 Depends on the options and trim package it has. I would check and see if its been tuned or what mods have been done. If its tuned, that a good thing. Which is the opposite of what you will fine with most vehicles. The emissions equipment is the problem on this truck, which is unfortunate. But its been proven over and over again to be detrimental to the longevity of this engine. Fine out what service/recalls have been performed and if its been tuned. If its a dealer, they won't know if its been tuned or not. You can send the vin to GDE tuning and they can tell you if they have tuned it. Check and see if its leaking coolant or if the coolant is low. If its low that is the common sign of EGR failure and there is a recall to fix it. If there is oil in the coolant (gray/dark bubbles in coolant degras bottle) than the oil cooler is going out. Another issue these trucks have had. All of these things are minor, but can cause big issues if left unfixed. I'll be doing a video in the next week or 2 on do's and don'ts for these trucks and how to make them last forever. So keep an eye out for that.
I actually didn't have an oil cooler when I posted this video but planned on doing one. My oil temps would see 250-260 when I got my truck. I swapped my grill, as the Laramie Grill is very restrictive and that dropped my temps by 10 degrees for coolant and oil. SFT is also 5-10 degrees cooler as well. I slow down and inclines to reduce heat and get better fuel economy, and speed up on the declines. This year, my oil temp hasn't seen about 246 on a very long steep grade and most of the time its at 230 degrees. The grill made a huge difference, but I have a full water to air intercooler in the works and a custom oil cooler. Just need time to finish the installs...
So... the few thousand dollars back from Ram due to the lawsuit is supposedly contingent on getting the ECU tuned which HURTS performance and MPG. I might take some of that and get it re-tuned. I don't have a tune now, just a K&N, use Dieself Kleen, keep the tires at 50psi, and get 27mpg city/hwy. I get 30-32 mpg highway. Only city I get about 22.
I'm also in Saratoga springs, curious which of these tunes are still available with all the EPA nonsense now. Havent gotten a eco diesel but am looking now and just seeing if it is worth the price difference.
If you buy a used Ecodiesel, they are often the same or less than a Hemi. The 2020 Ecodiesels have an 80% redesigned engine. They have learned a lot from my gen Ecodiesel and made some significant changes to the heads, intake, turbo and EGR/emissions system. Which were the mains issues with my gen. The SFT tune is available. I am running bulletproofed now running stage 2 and plan on running this truck for another 100k miles or more now. GDE Will be available again once they can create a tune that appeases the EPA. They have admitted that they are a few months out on a new tune. I'd be happy to meet up with you sometime and let you drive mine. Its got a 6" lift and 35" tires, so it feels a lot different than stock. But you will be able to see how a fully tuned ecodiesel runs.
@@GlennPearsonDIY I have been looking for a used 2017 or 2018 eco diesel. I would ultimately like a 2020 just the price is pretty highfor the limited trim level which I like
I've only done the tunes right now. Though the software may have disabled the EGR, it is still fully intact. I plan on doing a full delete when money permits, however. I also changed my tire size the same time I did the transmission tune, so that plays into my large jump in MPG as well because before it was registering lower than it actually was.
@Gunpackingsaint if you order the tune from sft, they ship you the tuning device and once you receive it you schedule a time with them to do the tune. You need a laptop. They remote in and walk you through connecting it to your truck.
You referring to sft or gde? I have the gde engine tune and the sft transmission tune installed I'm this video. I've done several other videos and am currently comparing 5 different tunes.
You can definitely tell how much of a difference the 8 speed transmission makes. Rolling nearly 80mph and only turning about 1,500rpms is amazing. You have the 3.55 axle ratio, right? My 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 6 speed and a 3.55 axle is turning about 1,500-1,550 at 60mph, but 80mph would be around 2,000-2,100rpms. 20 years ago many diesel trucks would be screaming at 80.
I currently only gave the EGR deleted/disabled in software. I'm running the GDE engine tune here and the SFT transmission tune. I plan on going stage 2 with full deletes within the next year.
My question is I'm lifted and running 37's ish tires what are you doing in the way of keeping her level bags I'm wondering as far as brackets go n what not
No bags, I just have the Fabtech 6" lift. It does drop slightly when towing, but not much. Not as much as my dads stock ecodiesel. The suspension is stiffer than I expected in the back. I do plan on getting some airbags eventually though.
@@GlennPearsonDIY I upgraded to General Spring front & rear (+50% load capacity) and RS9000 shocks & struts. Huge difference in ride quality. Towing feel & safety is in another world. It's like a completely different truck now, all for the better.
There is a program called alphaobd that has a tire size adjustment in it. The app is $10 and then you need an obd Bluetooth adapter, like the obdlink mx.
The tunes were done remotely. Well, GDE mailed me a new ECM, sft did a remote session to my laptop that was connected to my truck. They give you the instructions and walk you through the process.
Depends on your rear diff gearing. My dad is stock height with stock tires with teh 3.92 rear diff and he can get 28-29mpg. Mine is the 3.55 rear diff and with the larger tires I am about 400-500rpms lower than he is at 70mph.
You still use def with with the gde tune. That is my actual def reading. If you go stage 2 or their "off-road" tune then it wouldn't use def but you need to fully delete by installing basically a straight pipe exhaust.
I have the 3.55 diff as well but the 37" tires help drop the rpms quite a bit. The bigger the tire the slower the rotation. So, theoretically, larger tires get better fuel economy on the highway, as long as the weight isn't too high or the drag doesn't offset it. I do plan on going to 35" tires this next time that at 16lbs lighter a piece so that should help overall economy.
Before the tune, I hit over 250 towing. Average was around 200-210. Its now almost always below 200, 190-195. I've hit 210 once since the tune. You can feel that it doesn't slip no where near as much as it did before.
@@mattbrew11 well I'm not fully deleted, so it still uses def right now. That will change within the next year most likely, probably sooner. My truck is at the dealer getting the emissions recall done right now. So I'll need to redo the tunes afterwards. Might go stage 2. Haven't decided.

Great! After tuning the trans and engine, it's the perfect truck. The bigger tires combined with the 3.55 rear diff drop the rpms down low on the highway, which gives me great fuel economy, but with the tuned 8 speed it jumps back to a higher gear when you need to get on it. My dad has a 2015 EcoDiesel with the 3.92 year end and 33" tires. His hovers around 600-700rpms higher than mine does on the freeway and gets about 3mpg less. But, his feels a little more aggressive in the city than mine and when towing. But it's such a small amount that I wouldn't trade my setup for his ever. I'm very happy with how my truck is right now.

@@GlennPearsonDIY thank you for responding. So no tunes, or upgrades. Just the EGR manufacturer update. Guy has only owned it this past year.
what were you oil temps before the cooler added, when pulling your trailer? How much help did you cooler help?
Have you gotten your check yet? My status keeps saying "waiting for settlement check to mail." Kinda feels like it'll never happen.
I would ultimately like a 2020 just the price is pretty highfor the limited trim level which I like
Did you just do the tune? Or did you go a full dpf/egr delete also?
I've only done the tunes right now. Though the software may have disabled the EGR, it is still fully intact. I plan on doing a full delete when money permits, however.
I also changed my tire size the same time I did the transmission tune, so that plays into my large jump in MPG as well because before it was registering lower than it actually was.
Glenn Pearson thank you. Very helpful
@Gunpackingsaint if you order the tune from sft, they ship you the tuning device and once you receive it you schedule a time with them to do the tune. You need a laptop. They remote in and walk you through connecting it to your truck.
How does this trans tune compare to the GDE trans tune ? Is the installation, very easy, somewhat easy, or difficult?
You got lucky they kept sending me old tunes and never fixed shit. Anyone want my tuner pm me
You referring to sft or gde?
Keep in mind I also had 37" tires. That makes a difference. I recently changed to 35" tires and my rpms are about 200 higher at 80mph.
nice dash display! Me and my low budget HFE got nothing like that. I got the GDE engine, I need to think about the trans tune
I'd love the HFE. Wasn't one available when I was looking last year. Trans tune was worth it to me. It's been great.
How did you set up your dash like that? I only can get the 4 plus main screen don't have the temps
This is amazing! What deletes did you do and which tuning system are you running?
I currently only gave the EGR deleted/disabled in software. I'm running the GDE engine tune here and the SFT transmission tune. I plan on going stage 2 with full deletes within the next year.
Glenn Pearson Let me know what you’re planning as far as deletes go! I like what you’re doing, amigo!
@@GlennPearsonDIY hmm I bought my truck with a 6"bds and she sags in the rear a bit unloaded haha
@@GlennPearsonDIY I upgraded to General Spring front & rear (+50% load capacity) and RS9000 shocks & struts. Huge difference in ride quality. Towing feel & safety is in another world. It's like a completely different truck now, all for the better.
How do you sync up the tires with your tune so that way you dont have that speed issue you were talking about.
There is a program called alphaobd that has a tire size adjustment in it. The app is $10 and then you need an obd Bluetooth adapter, like the obdlink mx.
I’m curious what gearing you’re running?
3.55 rear diff. The 37" tires drop me another 300-400 RPMS on the highway in 8th.
🤘😎🤘
I live in salt lake. Where did you have this done?
The tunes were done remotely. Well, GDE mailed me a new ECM, sft did a remote session to my laptop that was connected to my truck. They give you the instructions and walk you through the process.
I wonder what mpg it would get with the stock tires and ride height
Depends on your rear diff gearing. My dad is stock height with stock tires with teh 3.92 rear diff and he can get 28-29mpg. Mine is the 3.55 rear diff and with the larger tires I am about 400-500rpms lower than he is at 70mph.
2WD or 4WD truck ? im not believing this MPG
4wd. Check out my other videos. I've spent many hours testing my truck.
If you have a GDE tune, how come the DEF gauge doesn’t read half way?
You still use def with with the gde tune. That is my actual def reading. If you go stage 2 or their "off-road" tune then it wouldn't use def but you need to fully delete by installing basically a straight pipe exhaust.
What gears do you have? I have the 3.55s and at 75-80 mph my rpms are right at 1900-2000
I have the 3.55 diff as well but the 37" tires help drop the rpms quite a bit. The bigger the tire the slower the rotation. So, theoretically, larger tires get better fuel economy on the highway, as long as the weight isn't too high or the drag doesn't offset it. I do plan on going to 35" tires this next time that at 16lbs lighter a piece so that should help overall economy.
Big tires will drop rpm
Should you do that while your driving?
What is usually tour transmition temperature on this truck?
Before the tune, I hit over 250 towing. Average was around 200-210. Its now almost always below 200, 190-195. I've hit 210 once since the tune. You can feel that it doesn't slip no where near as much as it did before.

Yeah, don't have to refill it as often as I used to. :)
Glenn Pearson is that like... never now? Planning for a gladiator with this diesel on 40s and it’s an overland rig so mph matters
@@mattbrew11 well I'm not fully deleted, so it still uses def right now. That will change within the next year most likely, probably sooner. My truck is at the dealer getting the emissions recall done right now. So I'll need to redo the tunes afterwards. Might go stage 2. Haven't decided.
Glad you mentioned the engine oil temp it seems a little high for open road cruising. Any links to an additional cooler?
I've pieced together my own kit. I'll send some links tonight when I get back to my computer.
Hi Glenn I'm about to buy one today 2015 with 100k miles.. any tips? I'm even more excited now that I see this video! 🚚
I bought my 2016 with 120k miles about a year ago. only problems i have had is the glow plugs needing replaced im sitting about 130k miles now on a yeah it has a little lag but there is always upgrades/deletes if needed..
Did you ever get one
@@bbear88 I bought mine the next day.. about a month ago almost.
2015 with 100k miles. In very Good overall condition. I drove it from Indiana to Texas towing a medium travel trailer and no issues
that's sweet bro
I had to stop at 3 minutes. As u repeat the same info 3 times. Over and over.
But tell me. Are u really happy ?!
How much is the camper's weight. I pull a 27ft with mine and I would love to use my cruise control. Also with the GDE tune what temperature do the fans kick in for cooling?
Camper weighs 7700lbs fully loaded. I'm not sure at what temp the fans kick in, as I can't hear them. I don't really ever hear them when driving. I'll see if I can tell though.
How would you rate the overall drivability of this rig?
@@GlennPearsonDIY 2025? He got it from the future????
@@LucasLeCompteMusic Yep! ha, no. 2015. Fixed it. :)
@@GlennPearsonDIY Even though they are having a ton of issues with them, I think this will be my next truck for the fact that the MPG is so good. I want a cummins 2500, but the MPG isnt that great. I drive about 74 miles a day for work at the current 16 MPG I get if I am lucky (even after tuning my truck) is killing me.
@@LucasLeCompteMusic do you actually need that much carrying capacity, my wife and I shovelled 1400lbs of gravel in our 2016 1/2ton Eco and it was still flat,With the 3.92 gears it will pull 8500 in 4wd,and the ride is probably the best of all brands,no issues, when our longgg warr.comes off,the gde. is a go🇨🇦
With that size tire how could your cluster be even close to accurate? Nice looking truck BTW.
Thanks! The alphaobd app combined with the obdlink mx+ Bluetooth adapter allows you to program the tire size.
Glenn Pearson I was told that an automotive shop with a high quality Diagnostics tool can program tire size. Not sure this is true or not.
@@treverXJ yeah, I took it to ram and they couldn't even do it for me. After looking online there was one option I found that was over $200 and the device only changes tire size and then I found that alphaobd app and it's only 10 bucks and the mixer mx+ adapter was 79 and it does a lot more so I went that route. I've used the app to program 2 new ECMs to my truck now.
Glenn Pearson A quick google search I’m not finding that tool. Do you have a link by chance? TIA

so this ecodiesel will get close to 35mpg in a wrangler
Joeys Cleaning Lady maybe
Not at all... A Ram with the 3.6 pentastar gets better mileage than a Wrangler... The Wrangler catches way more wind...
Wrangler is shaped like a box and has a solid front axle so...no.
"tires aren't calibrated". Changed ECM programming. And you ramble on about what the dash display says you are getting for mpg. Highly unlikely that this is accurate. Get back to us when you actually calculate the mpg at the pump.
This tank was hand calculated and came back about 0.7mpg lower than the liedometer. You can see it was just under a quarter tank of gas after the 300 miles. Doesn't take a detective to see that the mpg is pretty high. After 300 miles it only used just over a 1/4th the tank. I'll post a video doing things the right way when I make this trip again. GPS calculated distance and hand calculated at the pump.
You obviously posted without watching the video. He says exactly what you are rambling about at 3:13.

Glenn Pearson I don’t have the ecodiesel (I wish) but I have 33s on 2.73 gears (v6 6-speed manual) and I get 20mpg highway. At 70 mpg on the odometer I’m actually going 75 with my rpm at 1900. I’m debating on waiting for the 2020 rebel ecodiesel or the gen 2 1500 classic ecodiesel as the gen 3 will be brand new with many unknowns.
