  • In today's episode, we make a DIY homemade carpet and headliner for the Datsun.
While this won't get you professional results, our method was cheap enough for even the stingiest of car owners. We know that fixing a car is expensive, so here's our cheap and easy do it yourself method of fabricating carpet and headliner for your car.

A heat gun would allow you more stretch in your headliner, to avoid wrinkles. The floor carpet looks fine. With fitment jobs like this, the ONLY way to get better is through repetition. I'm on my 50th floor carpet job tomorrow and I'm feeling pretty confident. But I'm an old fart. Good video !!!

Hey man, work with smaller parts at a time for example apply half the head liner first then the second half and the end result will be much better. However in saying that it does look really nice. Great job

This is great I was basically looking for someone else to just buy a carpet and then put into a car instead of paying for a molded one and I found it 🤣 I bought a standard carpet the other day and thought I'm just gonna put it in my car but wanted clarification to see if I was mad or not 🤣

$30 for that rug is right up my alley. Going to try and see if Lowe’s or similar has one I can get. Doing the carpet on a 02 frontier so I don’t really need like super nice carpet.

Excellent work! If I may, next time get a small roller to even out the material and start from the center and work outwards, don’t lay the fabric all at once. But overall guys that’s look awesome.

I’m currently doing this rn, in the dark with a light, but my bench seat wouldn’t come out, and I had a shit ton of rust holes Behind the seats, I had to sand it and just spray it with rustoleum. Then put some tar paper on it, and now after a break and watching this video again, I’ll try my best to put in the rug and cut it to shape 😞. Doing this in a 1976 el Camino. Since I didn’t take the bench seat out, I have to do the front and back, and it sucks. Mine came out to $35 too. Thank you for the idea, and good video 👍.

  • @Kiowan918

Best thing I found to use to get vinyl to conform to shapes like this is a hairdryer and a caster wheel, you can get a couple different size and use them like little rollers to get it into all the corners and bends.

Good job man I like it. I have a 69 Firebird I would have given anything to have carpet in but I couldn't afford it back in the day when I was your age. I wish. I thought of that. Great job sir. I actually almost killed myself trying to weld in a shelf that was painted with God only knows what kind of paint period And I was underneath there huffing the burnt paint smoke.

  • @Sparkanotherblunt420

Ya did a damn good job with what ya had.
Next time use a plastic putty knife or scraper tool instead of your hands, and do one half at a time. Damn good though.
The vinyl and fabric paint, from my experience, cracks and chips after a couple summers of UV exposure.
The carpet turned out well. I honestly had my doubts when you pulled out a roll of cheap carpet material, but holy smokes did you blow away my expectations. Please tell me you used glue or contact cement.

Quick tip: spray 303 UV protectant all leather, vinyl, rubber surfaces, even belts, trim and tires. You’ll never have a dash crack or faded parts. My friend has detailed cars for a long time now and he has a repeat customer who drives a 2003 civic that looks brand new because he’s been getting it detailed with him since new. This stuff has been around since 1987 and was meant for aircrafts but works wonders on cars!

Soak the carpet in hit water, vacuum the water out then use a heat gun . The hot water combined with the heat gun relaxes the caroet and it really helps stretching it. The high quality the caroet the better they stretch

  • @historyrepeatscubed726

About those wrinkles ... as the material is vinyl, all you needed to do was use a heat gun to stretch the material in those areas which it didn't want to sit flat to the headliner backing board. Also, use some sort of straight edge to drag across the material from the centre to the outer edges to get those wrinkles out.
It was all going so well, the choice of fabric, the 3M adhesive (good choice), bu then you just didn't know how to finish the job properly to get a factory grade result.
I hope you'll consider what I've suggested and go redo it because your car deserves it.

If you put your fabric on before you spray it, and only spray and lay the fabric only half the headliner at a time, you wont get any wrinkles.
