Rodolfo R. Llinas - What Do Brains Do?

  • What are the functions of brains? What kinds of activities do brains do? How are the multiple activities of brains integrated, so that animals act in organized manners and pursue integrated goals? Considering the remarkable capacities of brains, they are astoundingly small. Most watermelons weigh more.

You can think of it like a sensitivity knob that gets turned up, similar to the loudness of silence. The stronger the external input signal, the weaker the internal background, or noise floor. In a similar sense, one sometimes says the environment is "so loud I cannot hear my own thoughts". Hence, both dreams and thoughts arise as background noise, only visible when the input signal is sufficiently quiet.

I'm really starting to believe that as a collective consciousness, we as the observers are not only responsible for everything we see, but that there's a hidden law in place that states all beings within humanism must be conditioned to follow given standards in order to be fully and completely controlled.
Meaning that even the things you think you see happening in the world are happening to some degree, but they are always purposeful. They will never fail to achieve whatever thing it's after. Your thoughts, movements, all of it. The entire thing is basically a huge lie that we continue to hold up because otherwise everyone would probably die.
It's scary to think of how utterly dependant we are on the system and still sit and continue to ponder things that can and will only fit within its framework. I mean the whole idea of math is useful, but we've spent far too long making that our reality...

Humans are indeed following their nature as cogs. They have no other choice. But this is not bad, as their purpose was never for the pleasure they have been programmed to assume. Like a carrot on a stick, instinct keeps us chasing what nature wants. There are no true individuals, for all thoughts and actions stem from the greater system. We are but blind servants. The illusion of personal control is only a heuristic dream to oil the shaft.

The problem is materialism. They start with the priori that everything emerges from some material process. It’s a fantasy. Correlation doesn’t equal causation. A person feels love and there’s brain activity so Scientists will attach causation to the brain. The brain activity doesn’t tell you who you love or why you love that person just like activity in your car engine doesn’t tell you why you visited your cousin. When you write a word document the computer is active but that activity doesn’t say why you wrote a poem or a book report. The brain is an interface as Cognitive Scientist Donald Hoffman says. Awareness interacts with it and we have conscious experience. The brain is just an interface that allows us to interact with the 3 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time we’re in at this time.

In this video, RLK is clearly enjoying having his materialist prejudices fed with a feast of fancy, but fancy it is, and what a feast. What neither of them (alongside too may others) seem to notice is that science, including neuroscience, depends on and starts and ends with with perception. If all that we see is somehow an illusion, then presumably all science does is explore the further details of the illusion, not reality. One cannot so glibly do away with reality then quietly invite its return through the back door as an explainer of the illusion. It would just be a _part_ of the illusion right from the off.

@@visancosmin8991 Indeed, computational formalism is just the wrong tool for understanding consciousness. Consciousness can only be grasped subjectively, though that is a slippery and loaded concept, as is that of objectivity. There is too much an unthinking linkage of objectivity with reality and subjectivity with illusion. Since the very possibility of doing and thinking science depends upon consciousness, we should have pause for thought here - which is, alas, none too common.

(2:10) *RL: **_"We are emulating reality inside our head."_* ... The universe emerged from the juxtaposition of "Existence" and "Nonexistence" through a nondimensional point called a singularity. The first representation of stable matter that followed was the hydrogen atom consisting of one positively charged proton and one negatively charged electron. 10 billion years later, the first ambassador to biological life emerged as a prokaryote consisting of a single chromosome surrounded by a rigid outer shell. The emergence of this prokaryote also introduced the unprecedented dichotomy known as "life and death" to Existence.
When you were conceived, a single sperm was fused with a single ovum. This produced a fetus that further evolved into an advanced lifeform to which its evolution could no longer be sustained within the womb. ... thus, you were born. Your individual evolution from ovum and sperm into the adult you are today mirrors the evolution of the cosmos from the archetypal juxtaposition of Existence and Nonexistence, proton and electron, chromosome and shell, and life and death.
After 13.8 billion years, Existence has evolved to the point that you now have a highly complex brain that's capable of comprehending everything I just wrote. You currently represent the highest level of evolution since the beginning of Existence, and your brain exists to assimilate and process all of this data.

Refer, for example, McDonald (2015)** showing that "Biologists discover bacteria communicate like neurons in the brain." So, what is it that distinguishes a human's neuronal clump from a dog's or a bird's? It's the body that makes the difference. Bodies wire neuroplastic, DNA-entangled brains. This is because the body is the vehicle that apprehends experiences and meaning. What's it like to be a bat? Or a fish? What's it like to be our opposite sex? Look not at the brain, but at the body that wires it.
