Helmut's kill count came from the fact that when you win a settlement battle, the "surviving" defenders are divided among the main attacking army on the post-battle screen.

Disclaimer: Never played the game, just watched videos.
Might be just me, but shouldn't it be easier to use Elspeth herself as a "roaming"/reinforcement army , while having other lords do the "consistent" campaigns like the one against Sartosa, due to how Gardens of Morr work? Instead of having 3 armies/lords defend from Norsca and Festus, wouldn't just building a garden in Erengrad and near Festus work? Simply pop Elspeth there if necessary. Plus if i remember correctly, one of the Graden building gives garrison units, making it easier to hold.
