Because defensive shooting requires protectors to shoot accurately and quickly under stress, how a gun is held becomes very important. In this video I will demonstrate the difference between a good grip and a bad grip relating to muzzle flip on the range, and I will walk through the biomechanical reasons why a thumbs-forward grip is the best pistol grip to date. Proper grip should allow the gun to stay flat even while the slide is quickly cycling. Visit Telluric Group for world class training. He is selling. If he can teach you a little bit now and get you shooting better then wanting more... HEY he teaches classes! They're expensive so he can afford to give this away plus he needs you to really want to be better to buy his class and perform well in it. Then you recommend the class to the guys you've been shooting with. They see your improvement from the class and want to train also. Capitalism really does work friend.
@@fuhq5121 you must not have watched many of John's videos if you think he is just giving tidbits to entice or hook people into taking his classes. I don't know him personally, but from what I gather he is a godly man who lives a Christ-centered life. I believe that, like Jesus, John wants everyone to serve and protect the helpless, poor and needy. So he tries to be the best godly example he can be for people like us. Watch some of the videos where he and his wife interact with each other. John is leading you and me by example. They appear to have a very solid loving relationship and seem to enjoy being around each other. That's what a relationship with Jesus can do for a man and his marriage.
He doesn't need to trick or entice any of us to participate in his classes. If you've ever tried to get into one of his classes you would know it's nearly impossible. They are filled up way into next year. Therefore, you can safely take his words at face value without wondering if there is an underlying agenda.

This was the best tutorial on proper grip that I've ever seen, and your economy with time in presenting it was impressive. I see many at the range writing off muzzle flip and recoil as unpleasant gun dynamics when it's really bent arms and low bracing hand placement. Kudos!

Thanks I watched this video Thursday practiced the thumbs forward and all.
And I instantly noticed after 70 rounds I got all with the numbers on the ccw chart or similar target the upper torso target at 7 yards .
So I would have passed qualified at the 7 yards.

I appreciate the explanation of the mechanics that you incorporate. I have always found it easier to remember "what" I was supposed to do if I understood "why" I was supposed to do it.
I really enjoy your videos! Funny and informative! Even though I've been through a lot of the training before when I was in the military, I always see something in your videos that re-iterates things I've learned or they just bring back good and sometimes tough memories. So, thank you for that. Keep up the great work.
I've looked at tons of videos and read dozens of articles, but never really "got" how hard to grip with my support hand, how high up, far back, etc. It wasn't terrible. I got the fundamentals of being high up on the pistol with a firm grip, strong support hand, thumbs forward, but something was missing. The way you broke down the support hand part in this video made it finally click for me. I dry fired hundreds of times with that new knowledge and finally took that skill to the range today. Compared with my last range session, my groups got noticeably tighter and my recoil management was much better. I also made some good progress on my shot anticipation by focusing on tracking the front during recoil which was made much easier with this grip. Thanks a million, John!

Harrel sux, mate go Primary&Secondary to reach quality and objectively superior content, John works with guys from there too, Harrel seriously is half good advice, half fudd, I personaly prefer not to have to sift through bs in this type of themes, like selfdef etc.
Also Harrels viewers act like fanatical cultists on several occasions.

New gun owner here. I love the demonstrations in this video. I took my permit class over a year ago and recently got my permit and a firearm, and this video provided a completely different but extremely well-taken explanation on proper pistol grip.

BAck in the early days of Ipsc, people were teaching this grip. A lot of people got the importance of pressure wrong and were squeezing in with thumbs and interfering with slide operation and causing feed issues. Nice to see you got it right here. The off hand position is about alignment with recoil and not about "grip power"

You are legitimately one of the best firearms instructors I have come across. Your reaction time in the beginning of the video is ridiculously fast. I cannot imagine getting in to a gun battle with you. I guarantee that you would be able unload a full magazine on target before I was able to get my first shot off. I have alot of practice ahead of me.

I have to say there are some things in some of your videos I dont agree with and "that's ok" but even though I don't agree it's still eye opening. And I really have a lot of admiration for you putting some of your training content up for new and experienced shooters. I'm honestly shocked you dont have a bigger following. I also like the fact that the channel is based around firearms defense but goes into much broader topics and some even unrelated. The world needs more ppl preaching firearms, proven tactics, and old fashioned ways. Keep up the content even if the internet doesn't agree!
John, I have been a Police Rangemaster for over 20 years . Your explanation and ability to break down the ergonomics and physics of the how and why of grip is beyond anything I seen.
