Because defensive shooting requires protectors to shoot accurately and quickly under stress, how a gun is held becomes very important. In this video I will give some simple tricks that will allow shooters to reduce muzzle flip and run the pistol flat absorbing recoil. The secret is not in gripping the pistol tightly, rather it is in the proper biomechanics, grip pressures, and contact points.

That is quite possibly the best grip tutorial I have ever watched. I've practiced, witnessed, and even been instructed on gripping, but have never had anyone mention "camming in the elbows" now I have one more thing to practice. I imagine this will be the next step in the evolution of shooting. Elbow position just seems to get skimmed over, or overlooked for the most part.

Your tips may be 3 years old but they are right on for me for my M9a3. If I do a full finger wrap with my left hand and keep my left index finger putting hard pressure on the left frame, pivoting hand forward, and pivoting my elbows tilting the pistol CW I can usually do the 3" bull at 10 yards consistently. That may not be good for those who have been doing this for years but I just started pistol shooting 2 months ago. And I'll be 82 in Dec. Trying to work out procedure in my mind ... let's see .... Grip then Draw, Slap & Wrap (left palm & wrap fingers with no gap), and Pivot left hand down, Pressure with left index finger. Rotate left elbow, squeeze left hand, relax RH a little and apply pressure pressure on trigger. I know ... if I do it enough it will come automatically.

Just curious if there are anyone out there in patriot land with these same issues(being a lefty, bleeding index, awkward using all the normal techniques i been watching & reading on)?ANY INFO WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.

The strong grip keeps the trigger pull more stable for me. I practice isolating finger movement. Not hard to do with a little practice. Musicians do it all the time. Still need arm, forearm, shoulder, etc, to form that strong frame, but grip stabilizes the trigger pull. Of course a good trigger pull is very important, but I am talking about small movement cause by the trigger finger. My stronger grip helps me. Hell, I even use the front of the trigger guard for my support hand index finger! OH NO LOL! Only on certain pistols but man I can lock down recoil!

Great video. This might be tough to ask in a comment but when you grip the pistol, is the back of the pistol grip facing more towards the v between your thumb and hand or slightly more towards your wrist. I've started to hold more towards the wrist but gripping the pistol like that is not nearly as comfortable (if I don't I tend to pull shots to the left). Its probably masking 20 other mistakes I'm making lol.

I have a training question for ya. I have cross dominant eyesight (left eye dominant, right hand) and am curious how I should align my sights with my dominant eye when I present my handgun. I can reliably present to my non-dominant eye side and be on target just from muscle memory, but this might not always work when it matters most. Is there a better way to present so I can get the gun to my dominant side without losing that 1 sec it takes to move it over after presenting on my weak eye side?

I like the elbow idea but how do you get your wrists to line up like that? When I try that my muzzle is lowered to a 30 or 45 degree angle from sight picture.

How much thumb pressure are you using with your RIGHT Hand?

Pinky thing makes more sense anyway. You have more grip strength in your ring finger and pinky that the rest of your fingers. This is way when sword or staff fighting your grip comes from lower three fingers while thumb and pointer finger are used to movement and direction control.

I think its important to be able to cross reference instructors with experience, because if they all mention certain points, those points are evidently the key to a certain skill. When I watch your videos I hear many of those same key points , friction and leverage in this one, but you manage to communicate in a way thats more concise and practical than most other things I've read heard or seen. Bravo for that

Could you do an update on this for all of us new shooters with sub-compacts? Love the idea of the pinky trick but not so much room on a small size gun.

John, what’s your opinion on lighter recoil springs to reduce felt recoil and flip? Is it worth the reliability risk?

Anything wrong with using this grip, but wrapping the support hand index along the front of the trigger guard? It seems to help with leverage and keeping that index out of the way so to speak.

Tis true, my sister has been shooting forever but she didnt keep her arms tight while trying to shoot a .45 ( she wasnt used to) and the gun came back and smacked herself in the head. Shes ok though.
I did see from this video that i should probably stop keeping one hand under the grip while my other hand holds the gun..dont know why i do it and why noone told me to stop but i didnt see you do it so i shouldnt so it. Might help

Is it possible to put to much pressure on the slide with your support hand to cause shots to not hit poa? I’m right handed and I catch myself putting too much thumb pressure on the slide. Thanks!

I been learning to shoot with my right hand I have a S&W MP Shield chambered in 40 Cal bought a couple of new ProMag for it & about 3 round in I had a slide bite ouch + it did not help matters any when these mags were jamming bummers, so I ended my shoot early Any shooter will tell you real quick to keep thumbs under the beaver tail at all times. I am waiting for some replacement mags to come I will give it another go. I figure my slide bite will be heal by then :) Thanks for the tips I look forward to using them soon

In the last video they said the wrist needs to be locked out. Are there any tricks to keeping the wrist locked out without basically pointing at the ground?

I love the grip that gets built by using the weakside trigger finger to hook the guard, but it was messing with my splits because of the trigger finger bumping into it. Going to play with the pinky for it a bit.

Why don't they make the frame have a thumb tab that sticks out on the left side of the gun so your lead thumb rests on a downward pressure point???

Fantastic breakdown! I'm going to practice rolling the elbows (you said in, but I think you meant out?). Thanks brother.
The "pinky grip" doesn't appear to work with a subcompact pistols (e.g. Glock 26 M&P9c) or single stack (Glock 43, Shield). Can you address smaller framed pistols in Part 3 or 4? I'd think the fundamentals would be the same, but maybe some minor adjustments.

I had the same problem using the pinky thing with the LCP haha. But other than that, everything else is working wonders. I used to be a weaver guy xD I started to realize that wasn’t actually very practical.
