    I'm so in love with the sound of that car. It really makes me jealous.
    I still not 100% sure why our sequential firing 12-into-1 header sounds not nearly as spectacular as your 8-into-1 header.
    But as disappointed as I am with the sound of our V12. I was really surprised how much power it made.
    Over 100hp more than stock. Only with the header, changed intake and a retune. I did not expect that. Neither that peak torque moved up to over 5000rpm - despite having 5ft long primaries. That went against everything I believed before.
    Only the lack in "sound quality" really bugs me. That was the only purpose I wanted to do the headers - and that's the only thing that's worse than expected. Well that, and the fitment. Like yours it's a pain - just changing the collector with the engine out of the car takes 8 to 9 hours - and I've done it multiple times in a single week while I was trying to fix the sound issue. ^_^'
    Did you ever hear the 8-into-1 with no exhaust after the collector? If so, did it still sound as good?

      Hello Maister and fellow mad scientist! Yeah, I don’t know why your 12-1 doesn’t sound like a 12-1. I haven’t run mine without piping after the collector so I don’t have an answer there. My 8-1 is 4” diameter from collector to exhaust tip, and that must have something to do with the sound. I wonder if trying different sizes on the back end would change the sound?
      60” long primaries? You are a mad scientist!
      Thanks again for including my car in your video, it really helped me add some subscribers.

    By the way... to anyone else who does extensive mock-up work on engine bays, I have a trick that saves time and headache. You can use heavy duty trash bags to line the engine bay, and pour in expanding foam. Cut it out in sections and reassemble outaide of the car. This way, you have a dead-nuts-accurate representation of the engine bay features conveniently outside of the car, so you're not constantly running back and forth to take measurements.
    Alternatively, if you have a computer with 3D modeling software... you can use any Samsung Note 10+ or later model, to scan a rough map. Just be sure to grab some florescent sticker dots and place different color dots. If you don't, it's more pain than it's worth, especially in a bare or black engine bay. The different color stickers help the scanning software register different locations.

    I'm still amazed at how you were able to not only stuff the exhaust to the rear, while keeping the proper order... but to also keep equal length primaries. I don't even want to know how long you spent routing the spaghetti mock-up. Makes my head hurt, just thinking about it 😂

      Would it be possible to make a Honda k20/k24 - four cylinder sound similar to f1? Firing order 1-3-4-2
      Your help would be greatly appreciated.
      I look to put a NA Honda k20/k24 into a classic honda S600 coupe.

      Good question. You’ve already solved half the problem by having a straight four. The sound however, will be different than a V8 tuned exhaust. Have you built an exhaust header before?

    I have had long tube headers tri y headers with x-pipes on a couple of my mustangs. None of them compares to the sound of yours though. Just love what you did with this car. Its gonna be epic with the new engine. Did you build the headers yourself? I feel like i need to get hold of a header like this myself now!

      Thank you sir. I first heard these on a Baja trophy truck (Ford) when I conned my way onto their pit crew for a few races. Look up R.E.F. Unlimited in Kingman AZ if you want one built for you. Greg’s done two sets for me. I love the sound and the smiles I get while driving by ( even at part throttle). Cheers!

    It would be cool if you went into the science of the exhaust note, from what ive heard its more than just equal length and a proper firing order merge collector. Or am i wrong?

    • @trackdayclassics
      @trackdayclassics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah yes, the science of exhaust. Unfortunately I am not the exhaust guru, just repeating what I was told by the exhaust builder: R.E.F. Ltd of Kingman AZ. Greg is the engineer and knows more than most. The magic of exhaust systems has many theories, and many different opinions. Wouldn’t you agree? Thanks for your comment! Cheers!

    The video does not show how you routed the exhaust from the single collector to the side exit tail pipe? I am just curious in how you did that. I have a 1968 Mustang fastback that I am fixing up so I enjoy the Ford Mustang videos.

    Is the single 4 barrel carb (as opposed to EFI, dual 4 barrel carbs, or quad Weber IDAs) a restriction of the specific racing class or just personal preference?

    • @trackdayclassics
      @trackdayclassics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just my preference. I’ve had two EFI systems in the past, and to be honest, they weren’t right for me. I have EFI on my 65 Ranchero and that one is bulletproof. Cheers!

    I couldn't help but notice that flexplate cause it looks a little to close to that 1 header, does that fiberglass wrap work for you cause it not really helping the headers on my mustang my engine bay gets cooking, Im getting a new hood soon hopefully more airflow will solve my problem.

    • @trackdayclassics
      @trackdayclassics  15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The exhaust is cerakoted. The wrap helps but the coating keeps the heat inside the pipe. I’ve also installed layers of heat shield where I could, but having said that, it still gets toasty inside the car. I hope that helps. Cheers!

    I feel your pain with the 8 to 1 install and see many parallels in our builds. I'm running a pretty aggressive ZSR solid roller 427 (a more road race oriented version of his sportsmans package) and just got my dry sump setup all figured out after going from wet sump. The build has gone off the deep end as far as the depth of what I am doing vs what I thought I would simply do. One item is for sure the exhaust. People that don't fully understand my 180* setup often ask "why??". Tired of answering that, but I absolutely LOVE the engineering, theory, and challenge of the setup and having something that looks and will hopefully sound unique. I fully anticipate having to redo a portion of the mid-section of the exhaust to "tune" the sound though. It isn't perfectly equal behind the primaries to the tip, so I feel that may backfire on me. But I'm willing to eat the cost and get it right. Just part of this game. I hope to be posting some videos coming up, but just post on Instagram for now. Your videos and just documenting the process are the type of videos I love seeing and I always feel better knowing others are just doing what it takes and diving into this expensive hobby.

      Can’t wait to see your build. I have a 180 in mind for my next project which I hope to reveal in an upcoming episode. It won’t be an 8 into 1, but a true 180 similar to a GT40. Good luck! Cheers!

    What is the material of the tubes? carbon steel ? Why this different color? Would it be something like a ceramic bath? Why don't you use stainless steel? Why didn't you put anti-thermal material on all the pipes? Doesn't it improve performance?

    • @trackdayclassics
      @trackdayclassics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey Elton! So, I believe the material is plain old steel. It cost me about 3K to have that built. SS was closer to 7K, so…
      The coating is Ceracote, a newer version of the older ceramic coating I believe? I think it s supposed to be better at containing the heat and is easier to get inside the tube? I cut out a segment talking about where the wrap would really hard to put on. At the end the day, it just comes down to how much extra work and hassle it is for little old me. Thirty years ago, I might have been motivated, but these days I just want to go race. And, I’ll let you in on a little secret: there is a new project in the shop…😜. Stayed tuned for that reveal! Cheers!
