thank you so much for this video! I met my boyfriend almost 2 years ago, and he is italian. his English is perfect though. his family live in bari, puglia, and don't speak any english. so, I've started learning :) because we speak lots of Italian to each other and I'm learning from a native, I've found it not too difficult. last summer I went to Italy to meet his family for the first time and I was so scared to speak Italian wrong that I hardly said anything for the 7 weeks I was there! but at capodanno this year I spoke with them solely in italian! it's crazy how much you learn in a short of time if you have confidence :D I hope one day to be completely fluent and to live and work for the rest of my days in puglia ❤❤❤
I traveled to Italy in 2013 and felt I lost myself and found myself/ like I belonged in Tuscany- it’s beautiful . I had taken HS French for seven years but lost the ability because I didn’t immerse myself in and around those who used. I learned enough Italian to speak say excuse me my pleasure glass of wine where the bathroom where am I etc…. I would love to speak it comfortably thank you for sharing I hope to return to Tuscany and northern Italy in the left few years.
I know that English speaking people generally have a hard time with Italian pronunciation (and Italians with the English one): you're a very notable exception, I think. Keep up the good work.
You can always tell a foreigner in Paris. They say "au revoir". When it should be "a tout a l'heure" see you later or " a bientot " see you soon.. I'm sure there are sinilar phrases in Italian regarding Time. Great Video ❤❤❤
I so appreciate this! I literally just arrived in Rome today (a dream come true, especially after watching and reading all your content!), and I do get nervous to speak the small amount of Italian I know! I'll take heed of all your words and feel confident that some day, I'll be able to speak the language decently!
You are so adorable to share your vulnerabilities and sillinesses that we've all experienced in having to communicate in a foreign language. I won't hang up until I've said, "Ripeterebbe per favore," three times.
My mom loves italian and Italy in general; the beautiful language, the tasty foods and the wonderful places to go! And I totally get her! She can some words in italian because she learned it (not fluently, though) at school when she was younger, while I learned french at middle school and part of high school. I never really got super motivated before the last year when the french classes ended, which is sad because it resulted in me not being as good in french as I could have been. I would love to speak french and be able to communicate when I am travelling to french speaking countries, so I still have not completely given up yet. Now I want to learn italian too! You are such an inspiration! I wonder if it is hard to learn two similar languages at the same time on my own, a bit concerned I may be mixing up the words and grammar? It would be so cool if you could make more videos like this, or maybe show us some of your favourite places to go to in Italy. Hope you have a good day, sunshine! I love your smile, it makes me happy :-)
When you are comfortable in Italian and think in Italian and speak Italian without problems you are fluent in speaking Italian. That does not mean that you are bot able to improve your Italian, it means when you speak without problems daily conversation in Italian and understand conversational Italian iin the street, with your friends, understand when they speak on the radio or television, then you are fluent in Italian. There are always new things and new words that you can learn about a lanuguage and improve your language. This is my experience with the four languages that I speak fluently, even when there are improvements that can be done with the grammar and understand more advanced texts.
Some great tips! And yes I also hung up so many times for example when I called restaurants and they would ask me other questions than that I prepared for. Oh well haha one day I will be fluent. I am now at level B1, so I think that is intermediate. Xoxo
Grazie per i tuo video, Kylie! I've been learning Italian for slightly past a year now and am the stage when I often feel sad/a little frustrated because it's tough to string sentences correctly, let alone hold a fluent conversation with a native speaker. So it's really great to hear from someone who has been there and can relate to how it feels. Thanks for sharing your learning process with us and for being so encouraging!
Two things you can't bullshit in a foreign language are your on the spot speaking skills, and listening comprehension. Only way to get better is to keep practicing and speaking/listening as much as possible.
MoishetheBeadle Absolutely, that's great advice. I find that listening comprehension isn't too hard, so long as the conversation isn't super fast, but speaking -- now that's tough. None of my friends speak Italian, and the only practice I get is once a week during class. It takes a real effort to think of the right vocab and grammar, and even then what comes out is just simple sentences, oftentimes in "broken" Italian sans the right articles. Do you have any advice on how to practise speaking more if you don't live in Italy?
I feel ya buddy. Fortunately, in my case, I am learning Brazilian Portuguese (Italian next) and I have family from Brazil and friends from a video game project I am working on from Brazil as well. Stringing clauses together is really difficult right now, but I find listening comprehension pretty difficult in cases where the speakers rant (emotionally). But we seem to be stuck in the same lane. It seems, however, that you don't come into contact much with native speakers. This is where textbooks and courses fall short. Speaking with natives is absolutely the best way (and possibly only way) to truly be particularly proficient/fluent in your target language. First, I would take a look at Italian culture and adjust based on your assets around you. Where I am a resident, Italian culture is a large portion of city culture; pizza shops/restaurants usually have your fair share of Italians. Alas, I cannot help you much due to the fact that I am not in search for Italians. My second option would be to speak to somebody in Italian, translate for them, and have them respond in English. Then, translate what their response in Italian, and give *your* response in Italian. Repeat. The second method would help tremendously and although you may not be getting the experience that speaking with a native would, it will increase your transliterating skills as well as your conversational/on the spot speaking quality. Buona fortuna, boa sorte!
Here in Le Marche, if you are unsure whether to be formal or informal, or whether it is morning or afternoon, say, right after an early pranzo, you can always say "salve". You will never be wrong. Obviously, with your friends, you will say Ciao.
Thank you! So helpful! I am intermediate. I have been speaking and learning it for over 7 years now and I am stuck on a plateau! I am moving to Italy soon with my husband and will be surrounded by Sicilian family and friends. I would love any tips on how you got from intermediate to advanced! Thank you so much for these wonderful tips!
You have no idea how happy it makes me! The video about language learning! Wow! And again, so colourful and creative! ❤🙂 You are a great inspiration to me, Kylie!
Teachers may teach but experience and tricks to learn come from the students. Going to be wanting to learn Italian soon so these are very good tips. I hope I don't get my words mixed up from other languages I'm learning haha.
I'm Italian and your advice is very accurate - linguistically speaking. Good for you :). People, listen to Kylie :) I'm kidding. Learning a second language is always a challenge, especially when your average school text books tell you something, but then you get to experience how the language is really spoken by the locals, and you're like 'OK. this WAS NOT in any manual I've ever studied before'. But that's life for you. Yours is a very beautiful and inspiring experience. I hope you're getting everything you dreamed of by moving here in Italy, or if you decided to move back, wish you all the best and that you can always look back and say 'yes, I made the right choice and I'm glad I did'. From Rome, with love. ^_^
I found this video very interesting. Love listening to you speak Italian and picked up a few words from you that is will use at my local deli next time.
Thank you Kylie! I am enjoying your fabulous art immensely! I have been to Italy twice(the culture, beauty / people have part of my heart..., I crave to return and spend more time. I am still very much a beginner, 2 easy things come to mind that would help very much for a visual learne; if you put BOTH languages on the screen. Second thought, if you could allow the words or phrases to remain for a bit longer time, so I can take it in and study for a 1/2sec longer... Thank you for all you share! & for considering my suggestions... con gratitudine!
I had to leave a note here Kylie, you know I am one of your biggest fans, so I had to post this and tell you that this was the first video that introduced me to your channel. I was searching for a video to support me to advance my Italian language and here I am after all these years still in love with your work and always wait for a new creative, amazing, breathtaking production :) un bacio ;)
That was really helpful! It was interesting to find out that you can use the present tense to say things you will be doing. Grazie! I'll definitely check out the rest of your channel. :)
You are so inspiring! I am moving to Sardinia in few weeks and I am kinda afraid but from other hand Im excited. I know it wont be easy, but it will be worth it. Hopefully. Keep going!
I loved the video and yes, it is very helpful. You would make a great teacher! I understand Italian more than i speak! I am great with sign language! Lol! It really takes living there to learn it but your explanations on just getting started with basic communication is very helpful. Yes please continue. Mangiare italiano. Buona! Buono! :) grazie per video!
Cara Kylie, complimenti per il tuo video, che trovo molto interessante anche per i madrelingua Italiani come me.Keep up the good work! When you'll move to Italy, you're going to be the most welcome.Ciao!
Hi Kylie. I have recently found your site and it's really helping me with my Italian. I am certainly not a natural, but I am enjoying learning the language. Would it be possible for you to do a video on shopping for clothes, as I find this one of the hardest things to ask for when I am in Italy. Where the changing rooms are, sizing etc... Thank you for your posts, it's so wonderful to see the many places you have been. Laura
I absolutely love your videos! I have this channel in Brazilian Portuguese but trying to get courage do another channel in English. I guess I'm just still a bit scared cause I don't think my english is good enough! But you inspire me!
Well, actually is permésso, with a close e and without English long dittongs-like vowels, but you pronuncied Buonasera perfectly! Good job! Also is Buongiórno, with the closed o. I live in Campania, not so far from Amalfi, and Sourthern Italians pronunce it with an open o influenced by Neapolitan language, but still wrong.
Hi Kylie ... I just subscribed! So glad I found your channel. I'm a 68 year old American who's in the final process of getting my Italian Dual Citizenship by decent. I'm starting to learn the language and looking for an English speaking Italian tutor. Babbel and Duolingo have good basics but nothing beats a person to person conversation. Look forward to your response
I really like your Italian pronunciation. It's pretty good! well done! ;-) And I also like the way you explain. You're very clear. You can be proud of yourself.
Except for the sentence that has been already mentioned, 'stasera ci preparo', which is incorrect only because 'ci' always refers to a plural verb (it has to be 'prepariamo' or it doesn't make sense), I think your tips could be really useful for beginners! Also I find your way of speaking very pleasant :) keep going!
Can't you say "Tonight I will prepare us a beautiful plate of pasta" ? This would be a girl cooking a plate of pasta for two people. That would mean the plural "noi" are not cooking, only one is cooking for both.
hey kylie i love your language videos and you have been one of the many reasons i am going on exchange to italy for 6 months end of next year! im trying to teach myself italian before i go so i will be able to communicate with my host family so if anyone knows some good websittes and programs for learning italian let me know! grazie xx
Eliza Lo Russo Try duolingo :D and when you go there, speak as much as you can with people. Don't be afraid of errors. Try to use English as less as possible, immerge yourself completely, it will help you a lot learning
you're amazing thank you for replying to my email it was such a beautiful surprise to me this morning , your words : I can feel that they come from a big heart full of love , honesty , the love of shearing and a lot of things that i'm still discovering , thank you thank you thank you ,
I really admire you for posting this video! I lived in Italy for 4 years so I have lots of nostalgia listening to you talk about when you first started learning too! Are you still living in italy?
Non so come mi è apparso il tuo video (guardavo video di viaggi) e farò la figura del "provolone", non essendo esattamente un ragazzino oltretutto, ma lo scrivo ugualmente; sei splendida.
Ciao Kylie, Mi piacciono i tuoi video, sto imparando l'italiano. Sono brasiliano e i miei bisnonni erano italiani. Sono innamorato dell'Italia, sono stato in Italia un paio di volte. Spero un giorno di avere il coraggio e di andare a vivere anche in Italia. Abbracci.
Margoh GS I know that one! I just started learning Italian. I'm getting confused with the verbs and formal and informal. I am going to try writing it as well. I am planning my trip for September, 2018. I am hopeful I will be able to hold a conversation by then. :). Tuscany, Rome and The Amalfi Coast. I'm so excited! I've been watching every single video and vlog on you tube! Ciao!!
Hey Kylie. Do you think there is only so much you can learn from books and self study? Is there a stage where you need to live the language to learn it relatively fluently?
I'm a brazilian who is learning italian from an english video. lol Sometimes I try to use words in english when I can't find them in Italian. :( The same happens with french. Hope that will stop soon.
Il video e molto utile! This is probably the wrong use but I have a lot to learn. Thank you for this video, I took notes and bought the 501 verbs book you suggested in your other videos. When we were in Verona there was a high school group of students at the colosseum and I said excusa mi and they were like 'excusa mi??" in passing. I felt so dumb ha!
Rebekah DeLibro haha! So glad you found it useful. I really did find focusing on verbs to be a very good way to give yourself a foundation. Good luck!!!
"il video è molto utile." is very correct. you can say that. it means: the movie is very useful. instead of "il video" you can also say "questo video" so: this movie. It will be just a little specific with "questo". But both "il" and "questo" can be used in the same case without problems. have a nice day. :-)
I would love to learn Italian. How long does it take for a person to start thinking in Italian instead of trying to translate in your head. Do you think that could only be achievable if you are completely immersed in the language? I’m 54 and know a little bit of Spanish but I wouldn’t consider myself fluent. I’m wondering how difficult this will be
Kyle you are so nice! I am Italian and my partner is English, we are currently in London but we have just decided to move to Italy. He is worried about learning the language and your video is so motivating. where are you based in Italy?
Ciao Kylie you really have a good italian pronunciation when you speak italian you sound as if you were from italy and you need to work more on the vocabulary e the grammar even if you know how to make yourself understood in my language. I wanna teach you the female words end almost in vocale "e" anyway keep on learning because you are nearly there. Ciao you are stupenda
Someone has probably asked this so please accept my apology...but what books do you recommend for learning Italian? I have been studying pretty casually for the past two years but I'd love to get serious and dive deeper! I'd love to know (possibly in your next video) of what shortcuts you took to help remember! I will for ever remember to say "yum this food is delicious" and not "this food tastes handsome" lol. 😂 the Your love for Italy is so inspiring and encouraging! Wish I was there now! Much love! 💕😘
You can use “bello” to refer to food, however instead of “good” it means “nice”. Like: “prendiamo un bel piatto di pasta al pomodoro”, “ieri ho visto un bel film”.
thank you so much for this video! How’s it going now Georgia? Four years on.
And this is why i am so glad to be italian. Learn english is so easy, one future one past etc.. grazie mamma.
I know that English speaking people generally have a hard time with Italian pronunciation (and Italians with the English one): you're a very notable exception, I think. Keep up the good work.
Your italian is pretty good and your accent is so beautiful, I like it. Bravissima!
You can always tell a foreigner in Paris. They say "au revoir". When it should be "a tout a l'heure" see you later or " a bientot " see you soon.. I'm sure there are sinilar phrases in Italian regarding Time. Great Video ❤❤❤

Real life Italian, a breath of fresh air.

word20 maybe you're right 😊
Phrases are the best way to fluency and relevancy. Thank you for making it attractive and beautiful. Grazie Mille!
Could listen to you speak Italian all day 🙌

Great video as always, really useful, interesting and relevant tips. And your charm, energy, competence and communicative skills are pretty amazing.
You have an amazing accent, both in English and Italian! Thanks for the distinction between bello and buono. That one always confuses me! 👍🏼
This was very helpful as I’ve just started learning italian. Would love to see more videos like this.
Che bello, Kylie! Quando guardo i tuoi video, mi sento felice di essere italiana! 😊 Un bacio e un abbraccio! 😙
Grazie kylie 😊 This is really an helpful video. Now waiting for part 2
Thank you so much kylie!! It has been the best way to learn italian with you! 😊
Italian is a complex language because of its grammar, difficult to learn for a foreigner. But you're doing good e hai una bellissima pronuncia!
Very useful! yes, bring on the part 2 ;)
I watched your video over again and did find it very very informal so thank you for the nuance of learning to speak a new language .
Great video Kylie! I studied Italian for one month in Roma a couple of years ago. Nearly forgotten most of it now though.... 🤔
You have no idea how happy it makes me! The video about language learning! Wow! And again, so colourful and creative! ❤🙂 You are a great inspiration to me, Kylie!

That was really helpful! It was interesting to find out that you can use the present tense to say things you will be doing. Grazie! I'll definitely check out the rest of your channel. :)
Using the present tense does work fine as long as you put an adverb of time in the sentence (tomorrow, this afternoon, next week...).
Thanks!!
Good tips. You are so sweet i could hear you all day.
You are so inspiring! I am moving to Sardinia in few weeks and I am kinda afraid but from other hand Im excited. I know it wont be easy, but it will be worth it. Hopefully. Keep going!

madi Ceesay thank you!
Hi Kylie, great video! Do you think you could make a video on some authentic Italian expressions which I could use to make me sound like a native..?;)
Well, actually is permésso, with a close e and without English long dittongs-like vowels, but you pronuncied Buonasera perfectly! Good job!

you're amazing thank you for replying to my email it was such a beautiful surprise to me this morning , your words : I can feel that they come from a big heart full of love , honesty , the love of shearing and a lot of things that i'm still discovering , thank you thank you thank you ,
I really admire you for posting this video! I lived in Italy for 4 years so I have lots of nostalgia listening to you talk about when you first started learning too! Are you still living in italy?
Thank you for your help!
You can always go onto Italki and ask for an Italian language exchange... Before you go to Italy. Really helps.
Non so come mi è apparso il tuo video (guardavo video di viaggi) e farò la figura del "provolone", non essendo esattamente un ragazzino oltretutto, ma lo scrivo ugualmente; sei splendida.
very helpful!!
Ciao Kylie, Mi piacciono i tuoi video, sto imparando l'italiano. Sono brasiliano e i miei bisnonni erano italiani. Sono innamorato dell'Italia, sono stato in Italia un paio di volte. Spero un giorno di avere il coraggio e di andare a vivere anche in Italia. Abbracci.
when we want to say hi to someone older, we say Salve as a form of respect
Margoh GS I know that one! I just started learning Italian. I'm getting confused with the verbs and formal and informal. I am going to try writing it as well. I am planning my trip for September, 2018. I am hopeful I will be able to hold a conversation by then. :). Tuscany, Rome and The Amalfi Coast. I'm so excited! I've been watching every single video and vlog on you tube! Ciao!!
Hey Kylie. Do you think there is only so much you can learn from books and self study? Is there a stage where you need to live the language to learn it relatively fluently?
Beautiful video as usual :) 💖
Che bello video, grazie !
Che bello accento che hai. Your Italian is magnificent..Your looks astonishing. Why have we never met?
I'm a brazilian who is learning italian from an english video. lol Sometimes I try to use words in english when I can't find them in Italian. :( The same happens with french. Hope that will stop soon.
Buono, KF! Forsi Lei puo fare un episodio che si tratta di espressione idiomadica spesso usato in Italia? Non ci capisco idiome alcune/ ningune ?
those are the people i love to have in my country...not the ones who come here just to make mess and bring aggressive culture.
Il video E' molto utile. with accent, its pronunciaton is more open to 'e'
"il video è molto utile." is very correct. you can say that. it means: the movie is very useful. instead of "il video" you can also say "questo video" so: this movie. It will be just a little specific with "questo". But both "il" and "questo" can be used in the same case without problems.
have a nice day. :-)
Love from Italy
I would love to learn Italian. How long does it take for a person to start thinking in Italian instead of trying to translate in your head. Do you think that could only be achievable if you are completely immersed in the language? I’m 54 and know a little bit of Spanish but I wouldn’t consider myself fluent. I’m wondering how difficult this will be
Kyle you are so nice! I am Italian and my partner is English, we are currently in London but we have just decided to move to Italy. He is worried about learning the language and your video is so motivating. where are you based in Italy?
what lens do you use for the the talking to camera shots?
lifeafterclutter Panasonic 12-35mm
Ciao Kylie you really have a good italian pronunciation when you speak italian you sound as if you were from italy and you need to work more on the vocabulary e the grammar even if you know how to make yourself understood in my language. I wanna teach you the female words end almost in vocale "e" anyway keep on learning because you are nearly there. Ciao you are stupenda
more more ! LOVE it
Someone has probably asked this so please accept my apology...but what books do you recommend for learning Italian? I have been studying pretty casually for the past two years but I'd love to get serious and dive deeper! I'd love to know (possibly in your next video) of what shortcuts you took to help remember! I will for ever remember to say "yum this food is delicious" and not "this food tastes handsome" lol. 😂 the Your love for Italy is so inspiring and encouraging! Wish I was there now! Much love! 💕😘
Ciao, Kylie! Come si chiama la canzone sullo sfondo di questo video? Grazie!
You can use “bello” to refer to food, however instead of “good” it means “nice”. Like: “prendiamo un bel piatto di pasta al pomodoro”, “ieri ho visto un bel film”.
Hi, Kylie I just started learning Italian on my own. I saw that you wrote ARRIVERDERCI, and not ARRIVEDERCI, why is that? thank you
