    My Dad carried the M14 as a Marine in Vietnam. He never talked much about the war but he did talk about the M14 a lot. He thought very highly of them. He shot expert with one in book camp. But anyhow ive always wanted one. Especially now since hes gone. I got his flag mounted on the wall and it would be great to mount a M1A underneath it 😊

    You've still got good eyesight to shoot groups like that. I use an IMR powder load for my national match M1A and get about the same as you are getting, around 1 MOA. Somedays I seem to be able to shoot a little better other days a little worse but on average it's a 1 MOA rifle. I've got some 175gr Serria Match bullets I'm going to try and duplicate the famous military long-range match loads with before long. I sure wish I had a range as nice as that one close to where I live.

    Thank you for standing up and shooting these rifles like they were meant to be shot! So many shooters never get up from the bench, and they never develop an appreciation for the elegant balance of a traditional rifle when shouldered properly.

    About a year ago, I bought the same m1a from my local shop. Springfield standard in 308. the front band holding the gas piston on raddled. they don't come with the bayonet lug any more. ( that was soon changed) . and my rear sights were as bad as yours. the devcon on the rear sight did the trick, that raddle gone. I did install national match sights. Needs shims. Now the rifle is holding a 2" group at 100yds. the next project will be a unitized band and gas piston assembly, then a glass bed. I wasn't going to do the mods, but once you get started !!! My other m1a is a NM heavy barrel with mods. thx Blue for the tips, there still a fun gun to work with.

Got groups similar to what was shot here with Winchester white box & Federal fusion both 150 grain. Field stripped it once just to be sure I knew how & haven't changed a thing other than to put a scope on it. Many rounds later it still shoots great & I've finally kinda gotten used to the plastic.

Best wishes to you and yours.

      Thank you. It certainly could be used for deer hunting, with the appropriate required 5 round magazine in this state. Unless I had such a wild spontaneous urge, it's pretty unwieldy to tote around, and not so easy to point quickly. I typically like to take my Model 70 .257 Roberts when I plan to take a stand by a long shot, but the Model 94 is my favorite for the woods.

    This was very interesting. I'm expecting my M1A in a few days and I'm planning to give it a similar treatment. It is too simple and inexpensive to pass on. The one thing I'd have liked to see different is if the same ammo was used before and after. Just to eliminate that variable. So, I'll put my money where my mouth is and do that test. Should be fun if nothing else.

    Yes! Great video GunBlue490! This is what we've been waiting for. I've been saving for a while to be able to purchase my own M1A and I was wondering, is it safe to shoot any general .308 caliber cartridges in the M1A or will I need strictly military style cartridges with powder configurations specifically made for the M1A like "7.62x51 NATO". I didn't know if there was some discrepancy in the rifle chambering that made it unsafe to shoot all the other civilian .308 offerings/hunting or target cartridges or if your own hand loads required that special consideration. Thanks!

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you. Springfield Armory M1A rifles are stamped .308, and are perfectly safe for any commercial .308 Winchester ammo, without reservation. Before accurizing it, last Memorial Day, I produced a video where I demonstrated it with a number of different commercial loads. Because it uses a short stroke tappet system, combined with a self compensating gas port, there are no special concerns about internal pressures, as with the Garand. That being said, such gas systems can fail to cycle fully with quicker burning powders, but it won't hurt them. Contrary to many ridiculous assertions, the action feeds like any box magazine repeater, and handles any bullet type perfectly. It is absolutely not limited to full metal jackets or hollow points, and there's no reason whatsoever to limit it to such types. In fact, it feeds so smoothly that the bullets that you witnessed striking the paper were not even crimped in place.

    What is your opinion on the durability of the epoxy? I've heard "Armorers" claim 3 to 5 K rounds. Also, what is your opinion of using kids play dough instead of plumbers putty? Seems play dough would be easier to work with. I have both on hand but don't rat me out to the crumb crunchers!

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good epoxy bedding will last forever, especially when used in minimal amounts to shim the walnut. There's no space between the steel and epoxy, so it's not being hammered, and it does not compress or deform under load. Armorers need revenue to pay their bills. Anything that fills the voids and is removable is fine.

  • @andrewdudenhoffer9512
    @andrewdudenhoffer9512 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Random question, but hopefully you are the person who can help me with it. I bought a new rifle package with a scope. I took it to a gunsmith for a muzzle brake. When I picked it up the smith told me that the rings had not been tight enough when he removed the scope, so when he reinstalled the scope he tightened them down more than they had been from the factory. I asked him if he used a torque wrench. He said no. I would assume that they came from the factory with the proper torque. I am worried that if he has now torqued them beyond what they came with from the factory without using a torque wrench, that he may have over torqued them and ruined my scope. How would I know if I have a problem or not?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that's a particular pet peeve of mine. I never knew a gunsmith who ever used a torque wrench for installing scopes. I've installed hundreds of scopes over the course of 55 years without a torque wrench. In each of the three factory armorer classes that I took at S&W, Ruger, and Remington, I never used or even saw a torque measuring device. Lots of factory screws are installed by air wrenches that vary considerably in torque as the static pressure is depleted, or as water builds in the system. They limit the high end, but not the low, which is probably what happened to your factory installed scope. A properly fitting gunsmith screwdriver used in the hand with reasonable leverage provides perfect torque, without being capable of over tightening. Torx or Allen screws can also be tightened with the simple L-shaped wrench that Leupold and others supply with their bases and rings, and are perfectly self limiting by design.
      I did a particular video on the issue of torque some years ago to dispel the silly rather recent myth that torque measuring devices are necessary for guns. Like so much of the expensive paraphernalia with the various claims, it works for the folks that sell them. Some gun manufacturers are now providing torque numbers, only because folks these days have an attachment to them like a security blanket and can't accept the world without fixed numbers, an so their phones ring off the hook with such demands for numbers. These are not engine block bolts or aircraft frames. These are little screws with steeply inclined threads with lots of leverage. When they stop turning, simply stop turning. Even AR barrels have no need for torque wrenches, but thousands are sold every day to those that are being told to use them. 30 to 80 pounds is a very imprecise range that simply means use a big wrench and tighten the thing to where the gas tube lines up, that's all. Army armorers never used a torque wrench to change barrels. They just learned to tighten it until things lined up.

    • @andrewdudenhoffer9512
      @andrewdudenhoffer9512 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GunBlue490 Thank you for your response sir, I feel better now. I have just heard all these people on youtube talking about how you can damage your scope if you go even a few inch pounds over the specified tolerance listed by the manufacturer, and it is kinda scary for a guy like me who doesn't yet have enough personal experience to disregard the fear mongering.

    • @seanoneil277
      @seanoneil277 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewdudenhoffer9512 Whether it's likely you'd ever crimp/buckle the tube on your scope by over-tightening really depends on your mechanical finesse. If you're the type that overdoes everything, a "hamfist" as it were -- then a torque wrench may save you. If you tighten fasteners with a good sense of feel for the surfaces mating and drawing snug, a torque wrench may be overkill. I've known hamfists who absolutely shouldn't wrench on anything w/o a torque wrench, and have known tentative timid tool users who would benefit from it, as they may stop short of snug enough.

    I have two questions I would like to ask? First question, do you mean nickel silver when you say German Silver and the second question is, what diameter of rod? Thank you.

      German silver is generically called nickel silver, yes. A 5" or so length of 1/4" rod is what I use. At one end, file a 20 degree chisel taper on each side, leaving about an 1/8" wide blunt end, which works for most things, such as driving sights, peening, etc. The end can easily be modified for any special need. S&W gave me mine 45 years ago during my 2 weeks training there, which is the tool used in the factory. You should also have a small 4 ounce ball peen hammer and a Stanley double head plastic mallet.

      @@GunBlue490 You are correct LOL. I have an old Remington 7mm-08 that my dad bought me I'm guessing almost 20 years ago so it has a lot of sentimental value to me. As much as I'd like to go buy a new Tikka I'd like to try and get this gun shooting better first. I've killed a lot of deer with this gun up at our camp in Maine over the years and I really like it minus the accuracy issues. I've tried a bunch of bullets over the years, and it seems like every year I go through the same thing trying to sight it in and I never get consistent groups. My cousin told me yesterday that I should probably have it bedded and that would help the accuracy issues. I've watched the videos on how to do it and I'd just rather pay and bring it to someone that will do a nice job instead of me butchering it. I see that you are from NH and I'm just south of Boston and I didn't know if you would possibly be interested in doing this or if you could recommend someone in our area. Ty

      @@christopherd7922 Thanks for watching. Remington rifles are all capable of very fine accuracy. I don't know what your stock material is but if it's walnut, it is inhibited by two issues; pressure on the forend, and looseness of the action. If it was ever free floated, the entire barreled action is just swinging in the stock. The cure is to glass bed the action with a two- point method as I demonstrated in my two part video several years ago. It's actually quite an easy process that most folks with average mechanical skills can accomplish. At the top of my home page click the video tab, that will display all my past videos from 10 years. Please also review a more recent video where I discuss the question of glass bedding. I can't recommend any specialist, and I cannot perform such work without the required federal gunsmith license. Most Remingtons require a very small amount of simple hardware store Devcon high strength epoxy, followed by free floating the barrel channel with a sandpaper wrapped dowel. I've done over a dozen Remington rifles, and they all shot magnificently afterwards. As a note, be sure to inspect your barrel crown for possible nicks. That's a very easy home repair that I can possibly demonstrate one day.

      @@GunBlue490 Ty so much for getting back to me. I guess after the season I could try it, but it’s definitely not something I’m going to attempt now with only three weeks away to Maine. I was contemplating getting a Ben and Carlson stock for it that has some aluminum blocking in it and it would be free floating, but still not bedded. I would guess this might help the accuracy a little better then the stage it’s in now.
      I’m guessing I probably do have a walnut stock that could definitely use some TLC

      Just a thought but before spending money try a different scope. Maybe you have a cheap take off Tasco or something
      I had a Weatherby MK 5 in 7 WBy Mag I tried every bullet weight from 129 gr to 175. All different brands factory ammo and handloads. In desperation took off an expensive Weatherby Scope put on a cheap Simmons 4x. Bingo 1inch groups or better with every bullet weight. By the way I put a Bell&Carlson stock on an old Ruger M77. Like it very much

    GunBlue490 Would you say the glassbedded M1A is now lower MOA than the Mini 14 with the wood stock?
