Shinkansen Echigo-Yuzawa Station at night

The Joetsu Line, which connects Tokyo and Niigata at the shortest distance, was considered for construction in the 19th century, but was abandoned due to the steep terrain of Mt. Tanigawa.
Construction of the 9702m-long Shimizu Tunnel that runs through Mt. Tanigawa began in 1922, and opened in 1931.
The Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Niigata side opened in 1925 prior to the opening of the Shimizu Tunnel. The Joetsu Shinkansen also opened in 1982, and the area around this station is now a resort town for skiing, mountaineering, and hot springs.
The Mt. Tanigawa has a route that even beginners can aim for the summit, but there is also a very dangerous route for rock climbing, and many people have died in accidents while climbing. The body of a person who was in distress in May 2021 was also found on November 7.
