Yeah this is the part where Matt takes a baseball bat to his setting in the most delightful way possible. Also - congratulations on the incoming bundle of joy you two!
IIRC the words he said were something to the effect of, "I just destroyed something I made... And I don't know how to feel about it."
I always liked how they had Uriel see that his family was safe before he died. I like to think that gave him a brief moment of happiness.
Poor Gilmore though, his entire life up in smoke. Same for everyone in Emon I guess, but we see it happen to him.
And when he said "it was very close", in the game it REALLY was. Matt has said in an interview that if the players had made one different choice, Gilmore would have died from his injuries. It's heartbreaking to even consider, he's so iconic, and so beloved by everyone.
This is when we really see that Vox Machina can look beyond petty desires for gold and save the people they care most about.
This is what happens when you encounter any ancient chromatic dragons, much less an alliance of them.
I was going to say the ass whopping was much worse in the actual play if I remember correctly, the green dragon's breath weapon had so many dice attached to it the whole cast realized immediately how much danger they were in and dipped

Fun Fact, Vorugal (Ice Dragon) is voiced by Vax's actor, and Umbrasyl (Acid Dragon) was voiced by Sylas Briarwood himself, Matt Mercer. I love seeing them reused, like they did a bit in Season 1. Best example is the guard that dies in episode 4 is just Grog screaming bloody murder 🤣
Also, so happy that Season 3 AND Season 1 of Campaign 2 with the Mighty Nein have already been green lit!
I don't know if anyone mentioned it... the two kids that inspire Scanlon in Whitestone were the voice acted by Sam Riegle's (the voice of Scanlon) two of his kids. It's really very wonderfully cute when you know that.
This episode could be summarized by "We're running, it's bad" ;)
Also, Madison's reaction to the lance getting destroyed 🤣

The Chroma Conclave just nuked Emon. RIP to Lance Reddick who voiced the Cinder King.
3:44 Not sure if anyone explained when y'all watched last season but Gilmore is a Runechild Sorcerer. I love that his magic looks like Doctor Strange's but purple. It's my favorite color.

Yessss, been waiting for you guys to come back for season 2. Just think Matt Mercer (the DM), spent years building up this rich lore and history for this city and getting the players attached.....and then just burns it all down in one session...

All I gotta say, is you're in for a hell of a ride. I've been waiting for this one. 😂 the complete devastation was absolutely beautiful to see but so harrowing at the table when it happened. Glad you're sticking with the series and hope to see you guys more on the tube ❤️
The Lance of Dragonslaying was added in season 1 as a reference to the Dragonlance campaign setting and novels. It was never going to make it into the show for real
To add to your green dragon theory, look when they run away from her in the city. She knows these are the people that killed Brimscythe but doesnt seem interested in chasing them, just watches them leave with a smile 😉
The red dragon Thordak the Cinder King seems to be based off the dragon in DnD that is only known as Inferno. He's an ancient red dragon that has practiced exclusively fire magic for centuries. Red dragons aren't the most magically gifted, but they do have a natural affinity for fire magic, which he uses to push his mastery to rediculous levels. This makes him the most powerful (living) dragon in DnD.

Gilmore is a sorceror, but not the kind you find in the vanilla rules. Matt came up with a new origin for him. I'll admit, I didn't expect Thordak to pull an Azula! Chromatic dragons, chroma conclave. Thordak claimed Emon, Umbrasyl claimed Westruun, Vorugal... a place we'll probably never see in the animated version, since it's *sans* Tiberius. (I'm hoping it's Lyrengorn, I'd like to see the wild elves.) Raishan never claimed anywhere, and as the only dragon that wasn't ancient, there's no knowing what Brimscythe would've gotten out of this. Scanlan gets swayed by the kids again; once more, and it becomes a motif.

So here's the craziness of Emon's destruction. In interviews, Matt has said that between 75-90k people died in the initial attack. The population prior to that was between 200-300k. It didn't kill everyone but it sure did a number.

If you’re doing another post season campaign clip watch, search for and add “19 misses” to your list. It correlates to the part in this episode where Grog tries to hit the dragon.
As you have seen season 1 was a wild ride. Hold on, this ride has only just begun its intensity. ^.~
Ohhhh, season 2, season 2 is a journey. You'll like it.
Brimscythe was a young dragon. In D&D dragons get stronger the older they get, the oldest ones being ancient, like the ones you see in this episode. They're separated by chromatic (red, black, blue, green & white) and metallic (brass, bronze, copper, gold & silver) dragons. Metallic dragons are considered to be "good" or neutral dragons, however their views may not coincide with that of humans, but can interact with them in positive ways. Chromatic dragons on the other hand are very much evil, arrogant and greedy. This also typically means that they are working alone and not with others (or by the means of servants), making this group a bit of an oddity. They see humans similarly to how we view ants.
Additionally, there's the two dragon gods Bahamut & Tiamat, but I don't know if they are part of the critical role campaign setting. The former is worshiped by the metallic dragons, and the latter by the chromatic dragons. Tiamat has 5 heads, which resemble the colors of the chromatic dragons.
That's the point when I'd be looking for Gold, Silver Platium, etc etc dragons!

Wicked and fun start to the season! Even though I finished S2 it's going to be a blast rewatching with both... the three of you!!
5:23 ... the build up for his attack was insane!! and then we get like a second stage to it when his blast turns blue!! Wicked!!

While there is a True Sight spell that lets you automatically see through illusions and shapeshifters/polymorphed forms. He could have just been using thermal vision. As he's a cold/ice dragon, so it's makes sense for him to hunt via heat sensing.
That kid got shitty with Grog because they were in Whitestone and he had Lord Briarwood's sword.
This season is bonkers. As someone who did not watch campaign 1 I really love this series.

Just a small clarification the acid dragon is not green he's black
So the 1st season was all payed for by the original Kickstarter. Season 2 now has that Jeff Bezos money behind it so that's why there is the increase in animation quality.
Oh, Brimscythe wasn't ancient. He was a young adult. Equivalent to someone in their late teens or early twenties. Dragons get more powerful as they age and different coloured dragons have different abilities.

So much to say about this episode without trying to spoil anything...
You'll find out more about the creepy lady that Vax saw in the next couple episodes.
Grog's failed attack on Raishan was taken directly from the campaign when Travis rolled a 19 to hit and Matt told him it was a miss.
The pissed off little girl at the end does play a part, but I won't say what. I will say keep tabs on Keeper Yenen throughout the whole season.

The Dragons are:
THORDAK, THE CINDER KING - red dragon with fire breath and is the leader of the Chroma Conclave
RAISHAN, THE DISEASED DECEIVER - green dragon with poison breath and is the smartest of all the dragons
VORUGAL, THE FRIGID DOOM - white dragon with ice breath
UMBRASYL, THE HOPE DEVOURER - black dragon with acid breath. Has the best face in episode 11!
BRIMSCYTHE, THE IRON STORM - blue dragon with lightning breath killed in season 1. He is very young compared to the other four who are considered Ancient and extremely powerful, why Scanlan's illusion failed and Raishan was able to dispel Scanlan's foot in her mouth. They hinted at the Conclave back in season 1 when VM was in Kreig's house with the dragon rug.
So much happens in this season, just sit back and enjoy it!
Matt said that more than 50.000 civilians (NPC) died in this episode.
Raishon's (Ice Dragon) power is so sick, People were being frozen with such force that the blood was being forced out of them, then freezing nano-seconds later.
Individually they are all nightmares. together they could destroy the world. And all that's stopping them is bunch of numb-nuts.

For dragons of similar age, Reds are stronger than Blues, which are stronger than Greens, which are stronger than Blacks, which are stronger than Whites. Thordak, this Red, is significantly older than the others. Apparently the oldest and biggest red dragon on the planet.
