Ducati 1992 750SS Starting Problem

  • My 750 wouldn't start. The problem was "not enough voltage through the ignition", indicated by a clacking sound coming from the ignition relay located just under the headlight. I swapped out the relay with a good one. This wasn’t the problem. Then I jumped the gun and replaced the battery, which as everyone knows is the wrong order. “Always check the simple, inexpensive and easy to do things first”. It wasn’t a weak battery. The problem turned out to be a dirty earth point where the battery earth strap meets the bike frame.
I guess that an experienced mechanic would have spotted that fault in an instant.
I hope that my video helps other rank amateurs like myself who have similar faults.

Just coming to this video in 2020. If you still have the bike, the best thing you can do to improve starting problems is to replace the cabling from Ground to relay/starter and battery for a MUCH better beefier cable. (There are kits available online) or use car cable thickness cables. This will allow much higher amperage to pass through with way less resistance than the relatively puny stock Ducati cables. There is a video showing this being done by a guy in New Zealand and you can see the results! th-cam.com/video/FbGdA80qrZw/w-d-xo.html Lovely bike by the way!

for starting, it's better to cut the light, don't use the starter, juste use a little gaz (2000rt/min) and wait the good température.

Hi I have a very similar(1996 600 super sport)ducati shes been stood all winter and was working when put away and have tried to get her going again and it has the exact same start, off, run switches and dash as yours but when i start it up lights and fuel pump and all other electrics horn etc work but hit run and nothing! Not even a tick!! Fuses on left side seem fine and can bump start it and it goes fine. Any help would be very greatful as at the moment I'm unable to get anyone out to check it. Cheers

As per my comment above, I'd plump for changing the starter cables between the relay, ground and battery. The standard cables just aren't good enough and result in crap starting. Once you have that sorted if it's still having problems then check plugs and the relay. I also had to replace my regulator/rectifier at one point when the stock one went up in smoke! (That caught my attention! I was riding it at the time) Good luck!

You can also check yellow wire from ignition key, only if it is broken...
