  • Watch the full episode: • The Netherlands: Beyon... Holland's polder land was once covered by the sea, but it was eventually encircled by dikes and dams, then drained. To pump out all that water, the Dutch used one of their leading natural resources: the wind. More info about travel to the Netherlands: www.ricksteves... #ricksteveseurope #netherlands #ricksteves

Probably because it's not hat exciting? There's only a few good cities I'd consider beautiful, the countryside is flat as a pancake and is only beatriul in certain areas. I love the Netherlands though.

The Netherlands IS the home to one of the modern wonders of the world ooff, the Delta Works that keep our little country from flooding during storms is one of the modern world wonders.

Robert Heinrich von Seyfenstern Most polders are in The Hollands, plus everyone refers to it as holland. It is not a big deal. Plus literally everything important is in HOLLAND. Amsterdam, the hague, leiden, haarlem, schiphol, de randstad... and also all the tourist things are in holland: Volendam, delft, zaanse schans, kinderdijk, scheveningen. The most people live in holland, the government is in Holland etc.. what does Overijsel have? Not much

We use pumping houses with diesel-electric generators today. Windmills are only run for tourists and for historic interest.

I am descended from grandparents and a very long lineage who came from Holland specifically. In the family history book it talks about the draining of the sea to create the many polders, the redirection of the Ryn River (Rhine) into man made sloots, vliets, meers, and poels; (1400-1700). It also mentions the history on how the iconic name of Holland came to be. In Old Dutch, when Holland was a large collection of islands, wetlands, and peat bogs covered in trees, the Dutch who lived there called it originally Holtland (Holt-land) or in Old Dutch; Holtlandt, instead of the modern Holland. Holtland was the direct translation of 'wooded-land' as it was forested.

Don't get hit by the wing of the mill. It's an expression we have 'he was hit by the (wing of) the mill'. Meaning he's nuts, insane. In the past sometimes it happened people got literally hit by the wing and ended up with brain damage and went nuts.

There is actually a movie about a Katrina like disaster in the south of the Netherlands called ' the storm' (which made the Dutch restructure their levees). In it you see how an emergency levee was made when the old got breached..... sandbags and a boat and lots of manpower. Its fascinating. What kind of people see the ocean and think ' I bet ya I can tame that'. Lol
