Makes me think of the Dutch Pontonniers of France Empire under General Éblé, they thrown themselves in the frozen water in Russia to build a bridge for the Grande Armée in a few hours, only 6 of them made it, both courageous and ingenious they were.
The 1953 floods in England washed away some of the Norfolk coastline. I recall a village called Sea Palling being affected. Also there was a ship off Cornwall called the Flying Enterprise that went down in rough seas.
@@ommsterlitz1805 That sounds like the Dutch yeah, I think only the Dutch could build a bridge in the frozen hellscape that is winter Russia and still complete it within a few hours 😂
I used to live in the Netherlands and now I live in Lowestoft. We built the biggest sea defence systems of the world in the Netherlands and here in Lowestoft they replaced the park benches. Was scared shitless the first time we had a proper storm here 9 years ago, water was halve way up the highstreet and not far away from my house.
My father led the construction of the first houses of Lelystad. I still remember his stories about the difficulty building in the muddy conditions. During the week, he needed to stay in a hotel just to the south of Flevoland, and then drive the length of the dike to the construction site every day. Thanks for rekindling the memories.
Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) ------------
There are three VAD buses going to drive that same route in a few weeks to remember and relive that era. Someone is going to narrate during this ride and pointing out some of the things still out there today.
The British Empire >>>>>The Dutch Empire. Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves.... and we saved the Dutch from the Nazis in WW2! The Dutch should give GB all their cheese and tulips as a token of their gratitude!

My father traveled through flevoland in his youth when the land was still very young. He remembered it feeling "off" and very eerie. Days later it struck him why: there were no trees yet. Just grass and a perfect horizon. When I drive through Flevoland I can still see that the land is young. I miss the oak trees that surround my home and were saplings when the flood hit.
I remember that too! The eerie feeling, everything was swampy, driving on a lonely road surrounded by water and these plugs of reeds/grass and no trees! I've always had dreams of drowning maybe it stems from that time 😅

I seem to remember from my trip to a visitor centre on Flevo polder somewhere (this was 40 years ago so please forgive any in accuracies 😁) that they actually got workers over from the UK who had been involved in reclaiming land in East Anglia. So the Dutch created the Netherlands, with a little help from us Brits 👍 EDIT: It is of course entirely possible that I've got this the wrong way round, and that the Dutch came over here and helped to create Easy Anglia. In which case, thanks for that, but you needn't have bothered 🤣
Really interesting. I'm English and heard the word "polder" in some geography lesson when I was about 9 but the teacher was boring, and The Netherlands could have been on the moon. I had no idea the land reclamation was this impressive. Genuine admiration for the Dutch engineering and people.
unless its candy, toys or something important to you at the time. Nothing means much to kids. I liked history, but couldn't give two rats...over WW2. But now Im grown up and I know how amazing this is. Even a genius will only be interested in their stuff. So unless its about using windmills to drain water, they won't care. That is how children work.
This short documentary is excellent. • I've spent much time in the Netherlands since the mid-'60s. I wish I'd known what was covered in this video back then. Our Dutch family friends there are virtually like blood family to us. A large percentage of the Netherlands speak English. However, the Dutch narrator of this video speaks English better than most people I know whose native language is English. All-in-all, very impressive!!
I live in a city where tourists come by the thousands. I've met young Dutch backpackers who told me they had English and several European languages. Yeah, I know the joke that it's bc no one can speak Dutch, but it's impressive. RIP: My friend Herman of Groningen.
@@sidstovell2177 personally I suck at languages, but most dutch people will know english and either french or german if not both. a smaller percentage also learns latin or greek.
Really impressed by the tenacity of the Dutch people. One the very rarest countries in the world, if not the only one, whose shores have been massively redesigned by man's hand.
@@occamsrazor5376 No one but me seems to believe the Sea Level Rise will take place soon, but there are marine sediments studies indicating this happened in the past, rise was quite sudden, and took place in European Winter, meaning water came from Antarctica. Simply, their land will drown, no escape, mininal rise would be 6 metres, also Belgium, Danemark, Florida, NYC, the pentagon, London, Paris,... they would have barely the time to save their lives, even this is not guaranteed, moving away over 6 million people is not easy. During the Kathrina and the Waves hurricane events, some people died by thirst and hunger, it took too long for US administration having the Army there. The East Germany has lots of land, lots of cheap vacant homes, lots of unemployement, German is the language Dutch is closer to, Hollanders better start right now going uphill there. Pass the Occam Razor, and the 'Chien Andalou' Razor on the single eye in GR8 CL of US, forwarding to Horus!
Knappe video.
as a human being who doesn't see race or color, I loved this. Shows how industrious and clever they were. They still have moments of their history in modern times. Like those spherical houses, quite strange.
My one day in Amsterdam in 1961 as a 9 year old on the way to Canada did little to educate me on the nation. I learned to pronounce Zuider Zee but did not know until today that it no longer exists. What brilliance to put the unemployed to work. What tenacity to continue using shovels and men during the 2nd world war. And that explains the tulips, too. Perhaps one day I may yet see them in bloom. Excellent video.
very informative! I married an individual who had Dutch roots, and have always enjoyed touring the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a breath-taking City, and the trains are a joy to ride. The flatness of the landscape is interesting, and the tulip fields in spring are beyond belief. Interesting to learn how challenging it has been to create some of this beauty.
If you ever come back to The Netherlands, I invite you to visit South Limburg around the Cities and Towns of Maastricht, Heerlen, Gulpen and Valkenburg, the Netherlands is flat, apart from the area I am from, we got some rolling hills over here :D
the Netherlands are awesome as a whole but the flat landscape gets boring after like 2 days 🤣 I don't need alpine terrain but some nice wooden hills with elevation changes of like 100m are the least what I need to enjoy my MOUNTAIN bike trips 😜 I love the Netherlands and the Dutch people for their whole attitude and approach of things though.
didn't they steal this idea from the city Nan Madol in the pacific? They did the same thing but were just the natives of the islands. It was created from 8th century CE to the 12th century CE? So they were the first to basically reclaim land, but differently. Instead of using windmills to remove water, they made dykes and stuff to control the water, which was an ocean
Many thanks for the brilliant storytelling! Even for someone like me who has been living for more than 30 years in the Netherlands, I still learn many new facts by watching your video. Dank je wel, heel leuk gedaan and keep up the good work! 😊
Land reclamation has been a major activity here in Japan since the 1960s, although for reasons other than imminent flooding. Mostly for population concerns, but the threats of tsunami also play a factor. Land reclamation projects are mostly centered around the more populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Thank you for an insightful video.
@@gert-janvanderlee5307 Yeah, but sometimes that actually is a bad thing, cause of how the islands and Scandinavia can channel in a surge straight at the Dutch coast because of geography, but on average the British Isles to take the brunt of the ocean forces.
There have been Dutch engineers in the past who went to Japan and helped the Japanese with their knowledge and skills. There are articles on that on Wikipedia.
Honestly, also hats off to the politicians who took the risk. Not many politicians are willing to take a risk, especially ones that cost billions. I respect the politicians who saw what needed to be done, and did their part. Same story for the Delta works, built following that destructive 1953 flood. It takes guts to put billions of guilders into a budget, and trust the engineers to use that money wisely. Safe to say, it paid off. Incredible feats of engineering, incredible technical skills, and a lot of blood sweat and tears from all the workers, especially considering how little was mechanised at the time. Truly incredible.
@@DanDanDoe politiciabs without active engineering jobs are not elected to solve problems - they are elected to keep things the same. If not for scientists and engineers we would still be in caves. Politicians do 0.1% of the job, they are 200% a burden, 3000% ignorant and incompetent and yet they get 99% of all credit. What a sham.
Very professional video. Informative, interesting, well-documented, detailed, beautifully illustrated with nods to Dutch artists, and brilliantly narrated. Hats off to the Dutch for their determination and perseverance! And kudos to the film crew!!
didn't they copy the idea from that indigenous people in the "Moluccas"? There was a people in the Pacific that created an island off of sunken wood, essentially pallets with dirt. They had no source of water, so they had to have it brought in daily. It was called Nan Madol. But even if some one else came up with these individual ideas, the dutch used them in tandem to create that new land.
Absolutely incredible story. Fascinating and impressive piece of history I was only vaguely aware of and I am extremely grateful to you for making this video. Thank you.
The Dutch are very resourceful hard working people. And they love their land, their farming and agriculture. This love brought out the engineering genius in them. Heartfelt respects and admiration.
I’m a hydrogeologist and the Dutch are well known in the industry as the world’s best hydraulic scientists and engineers, especially for flood and saltwater intrusion prevention. My Dutch grandfather was born in a village called Kuinre right at the edge of the North Polder, the nearest market town is Steinvig, Steinwich, or something like that. My Mom, his daughter, was fortunate enough to travel there one year, and many villagers, descendants of their friends, remembered the family, which emigrated to San Francisco around 1904. Being carpenters and building contractors, they had plenty of work after the 1906 earthquake. My grandfather worked building ships in the US Naval Yards there during the two World Wars. Afterward, he was a building contractor on many homes, schools and churches throughout the Bay Area, including one school I attended in San Francisco.
I grew up in Emmeloord, in the Noordoostpolder. As a child we often went to the kuinderbos, a new forest bordering the former port town of Kuinre. It still is a lovely place. I think the market town you are referring to is Steenwijk. Also worth a visit!
Holy crap, NOTHING STOPS THESE PEOPLE. Not kings, not wars, not floods, not revolutions, not depressions, and NOT EVEN NAZIS could stop the Dutch. These people are an unstoppable force that hasn't yet met an immovable object. I think we should all admire that.
Thats the dumbest shit i’ve ever heard. All of the above have crushed nl. took a bailing out by the allies to save nl from nazis, little bitches surrendered after 5 days

The Nazi's were just a tiny setback compared to the forces of nature. (Since they were out to claim more land for themselves...they did not stop anyone else from stopping the land being reclaimed by the sea.)
we surrendered to the nazi's fairly quickly. the fact that we are a free country today is for a large part the merit of brittain and the USA. ofcourse a lot of countries helped
An excellent video. I have watched two of yours. They are easy to listen to. The pace is correct. They are never boring even though there is a lot of necessary technical talk. You "wrap up" well. In fact I cannot find any criticism of your Blog, but then I am not Dutch and therefore I am not aware of the facts of the case. My knowledge of the Netherlands as a country has increased markedly thanks to you. I look forward to more. SUGGESTIONS: a video on Friesland and a video on the effects on the fish and biodiversity of the Netherlands due to the Polder formation. The projected solutions for sea-level rise due to Global Warming from a Dutch perspective as well as new crops in the Netherlands would also be interesting. Thanks from Ireland.
I was born in the great flood of 1953 in Amsterdam. My parents moved the family to Australia in 1956. I am Australian through and through, however I have a very soft spot for Holland. I don't speak Dutch, yet I instantly know when it is spoken. It is close to the time I revisited Holland and took in all the Dutch culture again (I was last there in 2008). This time the Van Gogh museum and all the museums nearby as well as The Hague and the Kroller Muller Museum. I am an art lover and there is no better than Dutch artists, IMHO.
I also connect closely to the Netherlands. My father, though keeping his voice low, told me he was an MP in the military during the 1953 flood and they had to shoot looters who stole from the abandoned houses and farms. Soon after he emigrated to Norway where I was born and raised, however it happened that I many yrs later moved to the Netherlands for studies, and had a very good time. Seems like the Dutch blood is a strong blood for both of us.
As someone who just came back from visiting Amsterdam, I found this entire video fascinating. Amazing to know how new some of the land regions to the west of Amsterdam are.
Paar correcties; 1.
Holland, sorry The Netherlands, are one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, the moral, the landscape, i love being in The Netherlands. But what i love the most about the Dutch, is the moxy, the ability to just do it and think in solutions...
Great documentary! They had a lot of problems with this new farmland. For example, the normal traktors were not strong enough to work the heavy sea clay. What you see at 10:51 is not digging a ditch but plowing of the field with 2 bulldozers at once.
This was a very good video. Thanks I really enjoyed it. I visited the Netherlands for the first time a couple months ago and stayed in Lelystad. It was very interesting to learn about the origin of the names around. It is indeed a very special country and I'm planning to move there to work next year.
We learned about the Dutch " poulders" in Geography when I was in school back in 1980. I was about 12 years old.Amazing how you remember certain things!
Complimenten, mooie documentaire.
I'm a Brexitvluchteling (a fugitive from Brexit) who now lives very happily in Zeeland, the closest Dutch province to the UK. We are protected from the North Sea by the enormous and magnificent Delta Project, which is about eight kilometers from my house.
Great video essay on the reclamation projects. It’s kind of strange to me that in grade school in the 70s we learned about the Netherlands and the Zuyder Zee, but by that time it was mainly gone. and the polders were really the main story about the region.
Thank you very much, it was very interesting to see all history and contexts, how long and hard it had been to build this big part of your nice country and with such nicely documented footages it appear way more clear ... I remember here in France my history teachers was talking a lot about netherlands polders but at times it was a bit confusing: it seemed rather abstract to us what all this implied from the point of view of our country, which has never needed to do such terraforming.
This video is awesome! It honestly explains somethings I never thought about, like why Flevoland isn't connected fully and I love the Aalmere reference. It's a real shame stuff like this isn't taught more in history class. Thank you very much for picking up their slack!
12:55 "Amongst them, my family." Damn that hit hard. No wonder you treated this amazing piece of history with reverence. (And also, excellent pronunciation of all the Dutch names).
The Dutch engineers I got to know, at the international engineering company at which I spent my career, all spoke perfect English. As do most Norwegians and many Swedes, it’s impressive. The majority of Americans only speak US English, or here in California, Spanish instead of, or in addition to, English. English accidentally became the modern, global lingua franca and many countries, like Chile, focus on teaching it in schools to help their children’s future prospects. It does, tremendously. It is fairly easy to learn, not being heavily inflected (meaning few declensions), except for its goofy spelling and pronunciation, a product of it being mostly a dual-origin language, medieval Northern Germanic dialects and medieval French. A lot of Latin and Greek came into it in the Early Modern Period, too. Those who are native speakers of Germanic languages like Germans, obviously, the Dutch and Scandinavians find it quite easy, the grammar is similar, but simplified.
"English accidentally became the modern, global lingua franca...." Not accidental. The activities and wide-ranging colonization/trading of the UK peoples through the 19 century is a big part. And even more, the 2 world wars where the US played a key role not only fighting with, but supplying the allies. Finally, President Truman's decision to rebuild Europe via the Marshall Plan, hosting the United Nations in New York, and co-founding NATO were huge. Finally #2, the strength and vitality of the American economy and culture (yes, culture) including its education institutions and innovative research and development (R&D) linkages between higher education and government programs. Oh, and the US dollar and American generosity with willingness to sponsor foreign students, educators, researchers, and artists. Not accidental.
Actually America uses language/movies as soft power tools. Then again only good for science and we need an unifying language and since English is a Germanic language it puts us in the privileged class cause easy learning.
Also don't underestimate how movies and tv shows....and later internet....taught us English. I could already speak a bit before being schooled at it. And at 18 I was able to buy American comics, not the translated to Dutch but the American ones. While very good at English already this added a lot to my vocabulary. Only to find out later i mispronounced things because I had only read them and formed how to pronounce in my head Then later I heard certain things in a talkshow or something and I learned how to say it properly.
Earlier comment is hidden. Just to emphasize that English being today's lingua franca is not accidental. Shortened version: It is the natural consequence of the money that the US invested in alliances - NATO, SEATO, foreign aid including the Marshall Plan in Europe, technical innovations that influence/support cultural popularity, and higher education scholarships for foreigners. To name a few.
I can add thumbs to other comments, but this just to say: brilliant, so well presented! Ashamed to say as a Dutch there was a lot I didn't know. Drove through the polders recently and my wife and I wondered about names and such. Now we know. Thnx! My dad, working for the TPD (TNO institute) was involved with research for the Deltaworks which are so impressive. So is this, especially historically.
The role of the Nobel Prize winner (Hendrik Antoon Lorentz) is not mentioned in this otherwise very good presentation. Wikipedia states of his post retirement achievement as 'the father of calculated hydraulics': "Lorentz was also asked by the Dutch government to chair a committee to calculate some of the effects of the proposed Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam) flood control dam on water levels in the Waddenzee. Hydraulic engineering was mainly an empirical science at that time, but the disturbance of the tidal flow caused by the Afsluitdijk was so unprecedented that the empirical rules could not be trusted. Originally Lorentz was only supposed to have a coordinating role in the committee, but it quickly became apparent that Lorentz was the only physicist to have any fundamental traction on the problem. In the period 1918 till 1926, Lorentz invested a large portion of his time in the problem. Lorentz proposed to start from the basic hydrodynamic equations of motion and solve the problem numerically. This was feasible for a "human computer", because of the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the water flow in the Waddenzee. The Afsluitdijk was completed in 1932, and the predictions of Lorentz and his committee turned out to be remarkably accurate. One of the two sets of locks in the Afsluitdijk was named after him."
😊👍 Interesting Video. I was nine years old in 1953, and I remember my home town, Ipswich, being flooded, and many more places along the east coast. In some places, the water was so high that people who had taken refuge inside their roofs, drowned inside them. The second hand furniture shops were full of water damaged furniture, so poor people could buy quality furniture items cheaply, if they were prepared to repair them. My family is originally Dutch, so I feel a certain sympathy and affinity for Holland. .
That was a very high density, concise and complete documentary. Even my geography lessons did not share all of it, never knew the ideas for the IJsselmeer were going back that many years.
Great video. I love the old pictures painting and films. My family is very Dutch. I was borne in California 1968.my Dad was borne beer Amsterdam in 1919. Mom in Delft about ten years after. They survived both Wars and floods. I'm 55 and still have a book about the big flood in the 1950's. That was the last straw for many and why our family and many others Imagrated elsewhere. I went to visit with Dad in 1991. He always wanted to move back. I would go tomorrow and stay if I could. 😁
An amazingly detailed explanation of how Flevoland got to the place it is right now. I was born in the "Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Polders" in 1976. That's what it says on my passport. I was born in the city of Lelystad in one of the first houses built in that city. My father still lives in that same house. I still live and work there and when travelling abroad, many customs officers ask me about the lenghty name of my birthplace. For instance, when traveling to the US and applying for an ESTA, the form where I have to enter my birthplace only allows me to enter "Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Pol" due to the restrictions of the length of the field I can enter my birthplace. In Dutch, my birthplace is known as "Bestuurlijk Orgaan Zuiderlijke IJsselmeer Polders". I had to explain this to the arriving airport in the USA that I was born there, 10 years before Lelystad became the capitol of the 12th province of The Netherlands called Flevoland. Amazing job on making this incredibly interesting documentary! Well done and I'm looking forward to seeing more interesting videos! Amazing and awesome.
I live here now and I can understand the pain, struggle, the percevance, engineering talent, marvel and the history of the place I call it my home. Thank you for bringing this to us.
Geography was my least favourite subject at school but I found this very interesting and I see you have more equally interesting videos up so well worth subscribing! Clearly, like probably most subjects, it's just the way it is taught.
My parents were dutch,it was the first language I spoke,my father was a machinical engineer, when I wanted to study engineering and my younger brother also was very interested in the discipline, my father would not let us study in the USA, we asked why,as we told him there are very good engineering schools in the USA, he told us to come back with that argument when they can build a "polder ". It did not only give them land,it gave them pride
I like the Flevoland story, but prefer the Deltaworks. Also love how this is a really good example of agile working. Design, test, test succesful ->implement larger scale, test /test unsuccessful -> redesign, test.
Zeer leerzaam!
At the time of Zuidelijk Flevoland becoming dry land, we lived in Harderwijk where my dad worked with PGEM (the provincial electricity company). I remember accompanying him as a child on his project tours for the electrification of de polder Zuidoost Flevoland when the flevocentrale was build there. Later he designed the multi public services building in Almere for the electricity, gas and water company. I feel thankful to have witnessed this transformation of our country from close distance.
Interesting video, but allow me a comment. At 0:13 you mention a rise in sea level of 70 cm, which would not be enough to break any dike. The days before the flood this was indeed the rise of the water level, but on the day of the disaster the level was more then 3 m (10 ft) above mean sea level.
Great short documentary. I currently live in Almere and this video provided the historical context I had been missing till now. Bedankt, as the Dutch would day 😊
I had no idea these polders were so recent. For some reason, I thought they had been completed back in the late 19th century. I think I saw a NatGeo article back in the 60s that made me think they were already done. Still it was a fascinating video. I have never visited Netherlands, but it is definitely on my list.
Quite a lot are, and much earlier too. The Haarlemmermeer is the most famous one of the 19th century. But the Middelzee inlet was already being 'ingepolderd' around 1100.
😊 Very nice and detailed video. I lived in the Netherlands for a short time, and I found it so beautiful and magical. Beautiful people, nice cheese and great places to visit.
The disaster in 1916: the flood reached all the way to Buiksloot, a former village just north of Amsterdam, now part of Amsterdam (North). This must have been a major inspiration for the gents living in the capital to push for execution of the plan.
I'm a Dutchman born in 1956 and HOW TO KEEP DRY FEET was always a sense of urgency. The defence again floods is organised by waterschappen. A waterschap is an authority that exists only in my country, so I cannot pronounce this word in English.....It builds and maintains large pumping machines to pump water out into the sea and builds and maintains dams, dykes and locks for the same purpose. We have to pay a special tax for this. de waterschappen are the oldest form of local government and were founded somewhere in the 12th century.....The Afsluitdijk or Closure Dam was finished in 1933. Fortunately, because when it was not achieved more than half om my country was washed away in 1953! The flood disaster of 1 February 1953 took the lives of 1836 people. A avoid such a thing would happen again we invested about 25 billion euro's in better dykes, dams and flexible barriers.
Excellent video. My compliments. And you have a near-native pronunciation of (N.E. American) English which is extremely rare for Dutch people. Thanks for creating and posting this vid. I enjoyed it a lot.
♥ I purchased a ship in Enkhuizen many years ago - and travelled all around Flevoland, Friesland and the IJsselmeer - up to Lemmer and down through Holland as far as Sas-van-Ghent near Belgium . . . this wonderful video is so well done, and informative
I am really happy that they named after the engineers instead of politicians. That shows a certain level of integrity.
He was a politican He was minister of water management
The flood in 1953 hit England too, Canvey Island was swamped that is reclaimed land too. The Dutch engineers came over and got it done very quickly.
During the floods the RAF flew over to The Netherlands to rescue people trapped in the flooded areas.
Some great international coorporation :)
And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him.
And to Him, we surrender.”

There are three VAD buses going to drive that same route in a few weeks to remember and relive that era. Someone is going to narrate during this ride and pointing out some of the things still out there today.
"Buy land, they're not making it anymore." Mark Twain. "Hold our Heinekens." The Dutch.
Heineken is for tourists. A Dutchman knows about real beer and only uses Heineken to rinse his glass.
😂die is goeie 🍺
Eventhough we made more land, land prices have increased a lot here and are quite insane
Yes hold our Heineken and keep it
The British Empire >>>>>The Dutch Empire.

Cheers to the Dutch. Very intelligent and industrious people.
The saying goes "God created the Earth, but the Dutch created the Netherlands"
Proud to be a Dutch person :)
this dutch person is proud too. 🇳🇱 number 1.
This half-Dutch person is proud, too. ;-)
Proud to be dutch
I seem to remember from my trip to a visitor centre on Flevo polder somewhere (this was 40 years ago so please forgive any in accuracies 😁) that they actually got workers over from the UK who had been involved in reclaiming land in East Anglia. So the Dutch created the Netherlands, with a little help from us Brits 👍
EDIT: It is of course entirely possible that I've got this the wrong way round, and that the Dutch came over here and helped to create Easy Anglia. In which case, thanks for that, but you needn't have bothered 🤣
Nice saying but you need to look at the history of the Netherlands before the Dutch arrived.

I am concerned how sea-level rise will effect them. I dearly hope they have plans for that as well.

Knappe video.
As a Canadian from Dutch heritage, this was awesome to watch. Thank you!!
as a human being who doesn't see race or color, I loved this.

Well said & described

Dutch Water Engineers were the best, and still are! The Polders are amazing feats of engineering.
didn't they steal this idea from the city Nan Madol in the pacific? They did the same thing but were just the natives of the islands. It was created from 8th century CE to the 12th century CE? So they were the first to basically reclaim land, but differently. Instead of using windmills to remove water, they made dykes and stuff to control the water, which was an ocean
Many thanks for the brilliant storytelling! Even for someone like me who has been living for more than 30 years in the Netherlands, I still learn many new facts by watching your video. Dank je wel, heel leuk gedaan and keep up the good work! 😊
So interesting. Mind bogling work from such a determined nation. Very inspirational. Many thanks.
Yeah, Japan is too exposed to the pacific ocean. That's a problem the Netherlands doesn't have as we're blocked from the Atlantic by Britain.
@@gert-janvanderlee5307 Yeah, but sometimes that actually is a bad thing, cause of how the islands and Scandinavia can channel in a surge straight at the Dutch coast because of geography, but on average the British Isles to take the brunt of the ocean forces.
@@teaser6089 The advantages in this case far outweigh the risks
There have been Dutch engineers in the past who went to Japan and helped the Japanese with their knowledge and skills. There are articles on that on Wikipedia.
Apparently 15% of Tokyo bay has been filled in. Unlike the Netherlands Japan has a lot of mountains to use for material.
The food shortages made my ancestors move to the US. New York then Wisconsin. Fishing and dairy farming. Roots run deep. Thank you for this video
Remarkable how such a small country was able to exert so much influence around the world. I learned a lot. 😀
Hats off to the engineers, the technicians and the workers who made this momentus engineering project a reality. Hats off to you all fellas.
Lots of interesting information that is missing from other videos on this topic, and very well organised.
As a dutchie I knew all of this but seeing it like this really makes me realize how crazy it actually is. Really fascinating
Absolutely incredible story.
Fascinating and impressive piece of history I was only vaguely aware of and I am extremely grateful to you for making this video.

De Afsluitdijk saved so many lives, infrastructure and buildings in 1953 that they said the whole project paid itself off that one night.

Interesting story. I think you mean Steenwijk as the nearest market town from Kuinre.

And to Him, we surrender.”
(2:136 / Translated by Community)

Paar correcties;

Thank you very much, it was very interesting to see all history and contexts, how long and hard it had been to build this big part of your nice country and with such nicely documented footages it appear way more clear ...
To name a few.
did you just say we are vassal state?? How dare you!@@ownpetard8379

Watching this video while staying in Almere hits on a different level. Subscribed instantly.
Proud to be Dutch. I live in Zeewolde, Flevoland. Wonderfull video!
Very intelligent exposition on how the history of land reclamation proceeded, and how it also shaped the Dutch identity. Well done Hindsight !
I visited Leystad and Almere for the first time in Oct 23. What a beautiful place and a prosperous people
I like the Flevoland story, but prefer the Deltaworks. Also love how this is a really good example of agile working. Design, test, test succesful ->implement larger scale, test /test unsuccessful -> redesign, test.
What is the difference between Delta works and flevoland?
@@jijst5 deltaworks are in the southwest, around zeeland. Basically to prevent another1953 flood.
@@jijst5 No reclaiming of land, but protection against floods. Great construction, though.
Another day where I learn a lot of new things about my own country. Thanks!
Thank you for you nice effort to write in Dutch. I can tell it's been a while, but I understood everything you wrote.
TOP QUALITY CONTENT ON TH-cam.
EXCELLENT JOB, THANKS FOR SHARING.
If I was potus, I would put the Dutch in charge of America's infrastructure.
The Dutch helped with the dikes around new orleans...
AND urban planning
Sorry, but we're not going to work for the next president. He denies climate change is happening.
You're on your own.
Zeer leerzaam!
Best engineers and you can be called an image engineer by doing this amazing video. Thank you!
Interesting! Let me check my sources to see how I missed that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Great short documentary. I currently live in Almere and this video provided the historical context I had been missing till now. Bedankt, as the Dutch would day 😊
Great video mate. You've earned a new subscriber (honestly, it was earned it within the first two minutes)
Especially the connection to Dutch icons is something I never considered! Very interesting
Many video's on historical subjects in Europe show maps which incorrectly display Flevoland.
I would take such pride in my country and community if I was Dutch. It's such a "when life gives you lemons" sort of story. I hope to visit one day.
Excellent video. My compliments. And you have a near-native pronunciation of (N.E. American) English which is extremely rare for Dutch people. Thanks for creating and posting this vid. I enjoyed it a lot.
This is unbelievable. Thanks for this documentary 🙇
Great video! One note: The picture used for Emmeloord at 16:27 isn't Emmeloord but Dronten.
Beautiful! Once every couple of months i travel with my friends to a Dutch city. We never went to Flevoland. I guess it's time to go there too.
♥ I purchased a ship in Enkhuizen many years ago - and travelled all around Flevoland, Friesland and the IJsselmeer - up to Lemmer and down through Holland as far as Sas-van-Ghent near Belgium . . . this wonderful video is so well done, and informative
Very informative, thanks. Greetings from Denmark 😊
