    in 2024 those ingredients would cost a fortune and probably not be available in one store. But its a good reminder of how good we all used to live! I have a Falkirk no3 andI do still make this kind of dish as I am a farmer with my own vege garden, food forest and flock of sheep in NZ.

    Friend, some advice: never put oil in. Let the meat brown on its own; its own fat will keep it from burning. I am a descendant of a togryer and construction engineer; grandpa built several dams and conceived Theewaterskloofdam. As they trekked, they used the potjie as an oven and every meal was an oven roast. Making food in an iron pot doesn't make it potjiekos in the traditional sense. Their only condiments were salt, skaapsout, and sometimes black pepper. Otherwise, veld herbs. I made many potjies and also judged potjiekos competitions. South Africans understand very little of their own history and traditions, sadly.

    Where would the old Voortrekkers get stock from? That's too much soup in that pot. A pot is never stirred, ever. Gosh, I think it is time for reviving my blog. Had too many strokes and stopped writing, but knowledge is going to waste. Great to see younger folks at least making an effort.

    • @ramennaidoo162
      @ramennaidoo162 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Voortrekkers never had live stock as I understand the history that taught in schools. They were always on the move. They would always stay in one place during construction of a bridge to cross over, which would take months to complete. During that time, the women would prepare a garden to plant herbs, spices, and veggies.

      @londonsouthafrican It's never too late or too old to learn.
      The vortreckers faced many challenges as they moved up north.
      They fought many battles with the Zulu army.
      As they moved, they named many places with Dutch names. Gert Maritz and Piet Retief were the main leaders. Many places were named after them.
      Pietermaritzburg was named after Piet Retief and Gertz Maritz.
      There are lots of Dutch names put up as they moved, and some would stay to become farmers in the Northern areas.
      The Dutch were very well equipped in the army.
