When should you replace thermostats periodically?

My mechanic recently removed my thermostat saying it would cause over heating if it goes faulty....& that it had no side effects even if I drive without it. Wondering 🤔

If you drive without it you’re asking for trouble.

Get a new one put it in.. search on here the importance of a thermostat for motors. You'll see why. Depending on the weather your motor will eventually either stay too cold or stay overheated. Thermostats regulate the flow an keep things balanced. Otherwise if he was right then car companies wouldn't use em. The only time you want to rip one out an drive without it Is if they are stuck shut an you need to get home. Even then you don't wanna do that in 90+degree heat unless you are moving pretty quick.
There's plenty of educational videos just ask TH-cam how important they are LOL that's what I did

Thanks that was a nice video but the.part that you show on the video is most of the time is aftermarket why because you didn't buy it from a Toyota dealer

There are other ways to buy genuine Toyota parts other than directly from the dealership. I always buy genuine Toyota parts on eBay or Amazon because the parts are usually cheaper and usually with free shipping and it’s delivered right to my house. As long as it comes in Toyota packaging it’s genuine Toyota.

Too bad they can’t make them to only fail in the open position.

They can, and they do. It’s called a fail-safe thermostat. Cost a little more, but well worth it.

Still can cause overheating, the thermostat helps the radiator because coolent cycles so fast. So when it lets the hot water out an cool water in it shuts a little again till it hits the temp; that gives the radiator time for the radiator to drop the temp on hotter coolent. Cause honestly coolent cycles pretty fast though most radiators
But yes if a thermostat gets stuck you will overheat quick as anything. But you can still overheat without one in the summer if you don't have a kick butt radiator that can cool 170+ degree liquid within 20-30 seconds before it goes back in a hot block of metal lol there's videos on why they are important. I'm not going to pretend like I have known this forever but I always thought "no thermostat no problem" I was wrong lol
