I've had my Hakka MX for about two and half years and have put just shy of 11k miles on it, it is quite simply the best bike purchase I've made in my 25+ years of cycling. That said, I lean to the racy side of the spectrum. I race CX on the Hakka with 700x35c tires, race gravel with 700x42c, and attack local single track with a 650bx50 set-up. Heck, for most of 2020 I ran the Hakka as a quiver killer and logged oodles of miles with deep carbon wheels with 28c tires. The Hakka does it all.

Totally agree! There is always something about my bikes that I don’t like, but not with the Hakka. It’s the ultimate machine for tearing up the countryside. Most of the negatives reviews, like this one, are from the go slow back packing crowd but this bike is clearly not designed for them. Mine is setup with zipp 303’s, 46 chainring, 10-42 cassette and carbon Fizik R1 finishing kit and I love it to bits, a true gravel race machine.

@@johnwedlake5543 yup. This past Saturday kicked off the CX season here in NorCal and the podium in my race (45A) saw 2nd and 3rd on Hakkas and the top spot was a Stigmata (a frame which is cut from the same clothe). Of note, although not present this past Saturday, the guy that won the rainbow stripes that adorn the Hakka down tube races this category.
As for this specific review, it is exactly what I would’ve expected on this channel. I didn’t find it particularly negative but rather spot on from this point of view. This is not a “party pace” frameset and that’s okay. ✌️

I, a 50 yr old party pace rider, have had a Hakka for a couple of years, running 1.9 650b's, and love it. I have changed the fork, to the Enve adventure fork, and the bars to something with a bit of flair to accommodate bar bags. I've found it comfortable on multi day/week rides, just completed the BC Trail (11 days camping) and, although not the best bike for the route, it was still a good tool for the job.

  • @ErrinV

Great video Russ. I agree with lots of your points here. I'm running my Ibis Hakka MX on the Terravail Rutlands 27.5x2.1 and they help to cushion the ride a bit. Takes some of the harshness out for sure. I pay for that with a real sticky tire on pavement though. Not in the good way. The bike feels like a rocket already and I'm sure with a smoother tire it would only get better. I wouldn't hesitate to do a bikepacking trip on this bike. I agree though that'd you'd have to pack very light. A tail bag and a small front bag could get the job done though. Shelter is overrated anyways! Overall I like this bike more and more every time I ride it. There are a couple things I wish were different but nothing I can't work around.

Happy Hakka owner here. As for the fender mounts, the late 2019 models started to come with the Enve Gravel fork that have fender mounts and the flatmout brake standard. It is definitely on the stiffer side, but with some bigger tires (I'm running 43mm Gravelkings) it's comfy enough for some rougher terrain.

I bought an Ibis Hakka MX ~2 years ago, and this review seems pretty fair and accurate to me. I also agree with other Hakka fans here that this thing is a rocket. I customized my Hakka pretty heavily. I swapped the stem for a Redshift ShockStop (which I learned about on this channel!), which helps soften the stiffness on gravel and singletrack. The drivetrain is SRAM AXS mullet, with a 44t chainring and 10-50t Eagle cassette. Although all that adds weight, with a light seatpost and saddle it's still

  • @dirkjipjens

    Another happy Hakka owner!
Have been riding this beast since 2018, threw on some Roval SL 50's with Rene Herse Barlow Pass 700x38c tires... Great during races (Amstel Gold), weekend getaways and even bikepacking!
Yes, it is more race inspired. The setup and possibilities are simple (=better). On flats and small climbs: 44t with 11-30, bikepacking and/or longer climbs: 38t or 40t with 11-40.
Missing one extra bottle cage mount, but solved it with a Bedrock Sinbad Stash pack.
Lightweight, strong, responsive and the one-bike-to-do-it-all (personal preference).

  • @Kuriketto
    @Kuriketto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've found that pairing a super-stiff, lightweight and responsive bike with ~40mm tires like the Hakka with suspension components like the Redshift Shockstop stem and seatpost is a decent compromise between climbing efficiency and being able to bomb down rougher descents without that paint-mixer ride quality. Can't do much about that toe overlap, though.

Couldn’t agree more. I had a Hakka MX with 650b for a bit - it was a terrific go-fast all road bike. The geometry is versatile and fun. Though it was too harsh for my liking, especially on long days on dirt. Perhaps the stiffness is better suited to larger riders. Fwiw, the current version of the Hakka has fender eyelets or mounts front and rear with the updated Enve fork.

I own this bike and I absolutely love it! I have Hunt 650b Adventure Carbon wheels with 1.9" tires and use it on trails and chunk. The standard 700c set up that the bike came with is perfect for mixed road, easy gravel. I can go almost anywhere and if I needed to there are plenty of frame bags etc to make that happen. Yes this is not set up that way from initial purchase but can be easily modified for more adventure riding if you hunt for the right add on packs.

Hey, Russ. My current bike is a 10yr old REI/Novara mountain bike, I started commuting to work at the beginning of the pandemic and I’ve transformed the bike a few times, but it’s still the heavy frame and fork. I’ve been using the Archer e-shift setup since spring and recently switched from an alt bar to drop bars. (I really like the Archer setup, but I think the drop bar controls need to be a bit more durable, I’m not overly rough with my gear but those buttons mash easy and the rubber is degrading after being used all summer).
Anyway…as I’ve been experimenting with that bike I’ve also been collecting the parts to build up a Hakka MX build. SRAM eTap AXS. It looks to come in around 17lbs with 700x35. A few purple accents here and there. I picked up a Carbon Tailfin Rack and will swap to 650b and pack up my UL camping gear I’m guessing with food/water I’m still easily 5-8lbs under the forty pound weight of the old bike.

Looks like a few folks have spoken to their positive experience with the Hakka as a proper quiver killer. I run it 2x. 700x30 for fast group rides. 700x35 with fenders as a winter rando bike. 700x42 knobbies for most gravel. Sure you get beat up a bit, but I’m curious if there is a substantial difference compared to a “compliant” bike running that same 700x42 combo. Also going to run it 650bx55 for bike packing. Though this would be a hakka ‘hack’ - I plan on swapping the enve gravel fork for the enve adventure fork, gaining the 3pack mounts and some mud clearance. Plus the tailfin rear rack system, I’ll have all the luggage carrying capacity I could dream of!

looks like you tested the older version of the Hakka (fork not current). I run mine with 650 wheels and mountain bike tires 2.2 in front 2.0 in the rear. Have a dropper mounted and an XT 11-46 cassette. this bike can crush any gravel or single track trail. Doesn't have mounts for serious bike packing but that is not what it is for. can be set up light and fast with 700c's or beefy with the 650's. one of the best bike purchases I ever made.

Russ! So excited to hear your opinions on the Hakka--The "lack of utility" you mention is spot on (which is why I "have to" have another bike for that). A couple quick things: 1. I swapped over to 650b's fairly recently (and have some vids on my channel about that and some other Hakka set-up stuff). 2. I've CRACKED two frames (size 53) and I'm not really that "badass"--Ibis warrantied them very quickly and with no problems. 3. I think I've finally found the perfect set-up for Santa Cruz riding with a Garbaruk 10-46 and 38t chainring. Anyhoo. Heart!!!

I've had my Hakka for a few years and enjoy it on the uphill but it is too bone-jarring on descents. I keep questioning why I'm on a bike that makes my body and especially hands hurt in bumpy stuff, and why the standover height is so high and the top tube isn't slanted down towards the seat tube at all. It's fun in the winter when roads are wet and I want extra traction, but even with 50cm 650b tires it's still not as cushy and comfortable on roads as my Ti road bike with 25c tires! I am doing what I can to save up, sell the Hakka, and get a Ti gravel bike or just a hardtail with 100m travel.

It's too big for you and the seat post is pretty much bottomed out which means you don't have any seat post deflection to help smoothen the ride. Well - overall probably a good review for your followers who also know mostly steel frames and are indeed more on the party pace and utility train. But without knowing the Haka myself I'd assume an person used to such bikes and - more importantly - ride it with a fitting frame size - would come to a complete different opinion.
Why: Tire volume and seat post extension first and foremost. With that super short Eddy Merckx era seat post extension any flex and additional dampening there could be in this very important part of the bike is virtually completely eliminated. And with tires which are for me a nice choice for several different terrains but for you relatively small and rarely used... well... yeah.
Now there's a conundrum with this frame being a) to big for a sound seat post extension but already b) relatively short judging by your riding position and toe overlap. So that's probably a geometry not very fitting for you? Very possible - but that also reinforces both points: a) probably a review very fitting for your followers and b) probably not just because of eyelets or whatever but simply because of it's geometry and intended purpose not a bike for you.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV

Nice video. I'm out. No more carbon frames . Had eight all broke . Done metal only for me. Tired of walking home carrying expensive bikes. Never again. Not even if free

Reviewing the "downhill feel" of a bike while not utilizing the drops is always going to feel sketchy and harsh. I know you've commented in the past the reasons for not riding in the drops while reviewing, but on a gravel bike, you are leaving so much on the table by not utilizing the drops.

I doubt that being in the drops would have solved the harshness of the bike.
