Wow, a new favorite video. Great what you can do on bikes. Greetings from the Netherlands, missing being able to mountain bike here and think about moving at one point to a nice location where I have mountains again.
Thanks! Check out my “Tour de Farm” video if you want to see more on that bike. Bummer you have no where to ride! I would definitely start looking for somewhere that you can if possible.
Hey Pat Smage and Hannah Smage! Love those rides from home to trail and back! I'm lucky enough to live about 100m flat riding from the start of 230m elevation gain of urban pathways until I hit Pinecone Burke provincial park! If I keep going I can reach 1025m above sea level after about 12km! Then it's all downhill home! Ride ride ride!
Awesome! ...I was hoping that single track on gravvy would be that amazing. And you rode entirely in your drops, which never would have dawned on me ...but skills are skills.
Geez, u ought to make a video of how to on your skills, doing table, bunny hop, sliding through corners...all these are on mostly on MTB but not on gravel! Keep it up, its an interesting video!
Alpine Valley? Has to be! Been there plenty of times on the MTB. I just got a gravel bike and I think I have to get there now on the gravel bike. Although you are way more skilled than I am.
Yep sure is! Nice to have it close enough to ride to. Definitely changes the trail when you ride a different bike! It is getting a little more rough too so line selection is key without suspension.
Thanks! I am pretty surprised at what I’ve been able to do on it so far. Fun to figure it out. I’m running the schwalbe thunder Burt 27.5x2.1s that came on it.
damn, that was legitimately impressive. i just ordered this bike with the sram 1x11 groupset, will be upgrading from an alloy cannondale topstone 1. it is good to see that this bike will handle much more abuse than i will ever be giving to it. i definitely wont be taking it on any terrain like this
Heck yeah you will love it! Glad I could show you a bit of what it’s capable of, it felt plenty solid on everything I did in this one so it can handle quite a bit. Check out my “Tour de Farm” video if you want to see it pushed a bit more! th-cam.com/video/b162D2W2a7g/w-d-xo.html
Wow god skillzzz! How's the ride quality on the rough stuff? Is it harsher than steel frames? From what ive seen in other reviews, it's reported as stiff and harsh.. currently using a surly straggler with a cx setup. was wondering if the Hakka would be a nice addition and be my race bike.. thank you!
Thanks! I don't have much to compare it too as my other bikes have bigger tires or suspension. It is definitely harsh through the rough stuff compared to those but manageable if you take it easy.
Wow. I want those impressive skills too. I am torn between a MTB or a gravel. I can only afford one. I want to ride off-road. In my area trails like these are the absolute maximum (no mountains). So, do you think a gravel can handle this abuse regularly, or can you do such things only from time to time?
Hmm well it depends how much road/gravel path riding you are doing I suppose. A gravel bike of this quality should handle trails like these often but your body might not like the abuse. A hard tail with some fast tires might be a better option and would still be pretty quick on the road/gravel.
@@PatSmage thanks for the quick reply. I’m 5’9.5” (that .5 is important 😂) and went with a 55. Thought about a 53 as I also like smaller bikes, but maybe that is too small. Keep up the great work on the vids and ride on 👍🏻
I built a gravel bike last year for the same reason of riding to the ride. I'm running the PNW coast bars and dropper as well. It's been fun, but drop bars are still so awkward for me and still hold me back to a fraction of my abilities with flat bars. Do you have any tips for set up or other suggestions for getting me a little more singletrack shred worthy?
Nice! I don't think there is a way to completely get over the awkwardness unless that is all you ride, haha. I feel like rolling the bars forward, or I guess further down, straightens your arms a bit more and helps for certain things when you are in the drops, but makes the hoods not work as well. A shorter stem helps it feel a bit more natural also.
Do you feel like most gravel bikes are capable of this (able to handle some abuse), or is the hakka a particularly burly cx/gravel bike? I want to take my '21 checkpoint on the trails, and although I'm not scared of roots and bumps, the idea of rock strikes or getting any air makes me a little nervous.
I can’t really comment on that too much since I don’t have a lot of experience with other gravel bikes. I don’t think the Hakka is built way more beefy than other bikes of a similar level but I know ibis bikes are of great quality. I try to go by feel of what a bike can take. It felt solid enough to do what I did but I know it has its limits. I would think most decent gravel bikes could handle a bit of off road. A lot of it is how you ride too, using your body as suspension can help save the bike also.
Dude you are the most skillful in any bike. This video was great. Keep them coming. You deserve a lot more views.
Thank you! I appreciate that. Views are hard to get these days but comments like that make it easier to keep going.
Damn. Just carrying speed through the trails! Looking good! Drop bar is so much fun on singletrack
It’s a good way to make our local trails a bit more exciting!

That's some skillful riding Sir. Anything is possible.
Thanks!
Awesome riding on any bike. Certainly answered my question about if a gravel bike would be fine for some xc single track.

Heck yeah sounds like an awesome ride!
Awesome riding !!!
What a true testament to that gravel bike. It’s also awesome to see what is possible on one. Another sweet video very cool
It can definitely handle a lot more than gravel!
great riding! i have about the same riding deal, 20 min to the forest for some sweet under biking on the gravel bike.
Thanks! Nice, it’s definitely a fun way to mix it up.
Who needs suspension anyways! You make it look so smooth Pat👍👍

You're amazing!!

Amazing!!!
I considered the mx setup myself. But decided to keep it rolling like a rocket with the 700 choice. Cool that the bike offers the choice to buyers
Oh yeah I still want both for a road only set and a extra fun set haha
WOW. You are some freaking beast of a biker. OMG. Love the video
Thanks, glad you liked it! I have something pretty cool in the works with that bike.
Amazing!!!!! You made riding a gravel bike look so easy!! Made props for your skill!!! By the way what tyre are you using?

No words
Incredibile
Dude, you have some serious skills! Quick question, how wide are your handlebars at the hoods and how much flare? Cheers. 🍻
That was impressive!
You might do well in a cyclocross race
Thanks! I’d really like to race one this fall, but a knee problem has kept me from pedaling much lately. Hopefully it’s good to go in time.
@@PatSmage Jingle Cross is next weekend in Iowa City. You might as well start out with a World Cup Race.😀

What a great video! I wish I had 5% of your skills! Incredible! What size was your PNW drop bar?
Thank you! I’ll have another video on that bike up this week. They are 520mm wide.
Made that rock garden look like child’s play! 👍🏼
It’s the bike! Well no not really this time, haha

@@PatSmage big thx for your answer! I will have to look into Hardtails then!
Hey Pat - how tall are you and what size Hakka do you ride?
I am 6’ on a 58cm. It fits but I prefer slightly smaller bikes so I’d really like to try a 55 for a lower seat tube.

WoW 🤩 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Why do some hakkas have dropped seat stays?
It depends on the size, I believe just the smaller sizes have them but I don’t know their reasoning behind it.
