How does eating plant based help the environment, vegans produce 7x more gases than an average person and people who remove plants from their diet produce even less gases. The land animals are farmed on can't be used for growing human edible crops and regenerative grass fed farming actually helps the environment. Also animal farming is pretty sustainable, there hasn't been any significant change in how many animals are farmed for decades, the planet has sustained much higher amounts of life in the past and there are way more significant causes of emissions than animals

Yes, there are more cows today than ever in history, however, there are a lot less buffalo and elephants. Greenhouse gas emissions from animals aren't that big a deal unless you plan on killing the animals off to get rid of them.
Also, do you only eat locally grown food? If you are eating foods grown in other countries, you are contributing more to greenhouse gasses than a person that eats locally raised animals.

My health was good (I was 59) and my weight wasn’t an issue. 3 years (nearly) on and my health is the same and I am a couple of pounds heavier which isn’t an issue. I eat what I enjoy, not what is necessarily good for me but I would change that for sure if I had to though not if that meant eating animals as enough of them had to suffer in my first 59 years before I woke up to the harm I had caused so many of them for no good reason.

To me it shows how no-one can be super dogmatic about either extreme (and yes in terms of omnivore they are extremes), but need to let each person find their own way. Many people have become quite ill on a whole foods vegan diet over time, and have felt the need to reintroduce meat or dairy. And as you say, there are others like you who have needed to reintroduce plants. I guess it is a combination of complex genes, previous exposure to toxins/irritants/processed crap, gut biome, exercise, sleep, age.

@@stevenfrew9301 a handful of ways. First of all, you have to know that it all dies down eventually. I’ve been vegan for 4 years know and pretty much nobody says anything about it anymore. Secondly, it takes an emotional conviction. I personally exist like that for a handful of weeks, where you want desperately to convince yourself to do it, but cannot stomach the consequences even while being intellectually convinced. Here’s my advice to you. Take a moment, right now, and just think about it. Every time you eat an animal, somebodies full existence has been miserable just for you to enjoy one moment and not face ridicule which will die down eventually. I hope I don’t come off as condescending or arrogant as I am trying to help. One thing I did that might help you is to just text anybody that would need to know. Simply say that you are going vegan for ethical reasons and that you would rather not talk about it for a while, as face to face conversations about more serious topics like veganism tend to be hard to deal with as somebody farely new to them. Think of it like you are skydiving. I promise you that it will all feel so much better once you just jump. Take that first step and I promise you that you will never look back. I wish I could like this comment a million times. This is exactly how I feel as well. At the end of the day I'm vegan it frees me of the guilt knowing the horrible things that go on in factory farms. I grew up during the dot com bubble and came across graphic videos of factory farms at a young age. I still have vivid memories of eating meat and having to set down my "food" as those videos would play in my head, reminding me of what I was consuming and what I was participating in.
I didn't think I'd be able to actually commit to being vegan when I started but here I am over 8 years later and never felt better. I also feel that for myself going vegan and keeping committed to my values was a pivotal point in my own life in setting personal accountability and helped build / reinforce my confidence too.

@@AstonAcademia I know a lot of people who take pleasure in the killing of animals. It is called hunting. As for the raw aspect, I think a lot of that comes from how we are raised. We are taught from the time we can walk that meat must be cooked for food safety. It is good advice and prevents a lot of pathogens.

I did keto for a while in an effort to get my anxiety under control and it worked. During that time I found a few of Mike's videos to be pretty helpful, but he's clearly biased and not above being disingenuous at times. I watched his video when it came out and rolled my eyes when he called you out for not being jacked. My grandparents, by your age, were decrepit and nearly dead. You look great and are always moving in your videos. That was such a silly nitpick on his part.
I don't always agree with this channel, but I thought this was a measured and thoughtful response. I've become more and more plant-based as time goes on, and I feel that unbiased quality content like yours is very helpful for people like me who have a bad habit of finding something that seems to work temporarily and want to cling to it like gospel. Howdy Chris,
I've been vegetarian/plant based for 23 years now. I started on the path because of seeing my overweight diabetic mother on the ICU bed after her quadruple heart bypass surgery. And while I was sad for her, all I could think was the 30 extra pounds I was carrying would put me on one of those tables in the future if I didn't change something.
So found Dr. Esselstein and Dr. McDougall - both advocating for a plant based diet. And I was off. And funny, but those 30 extra pounds I was carrying came off all by themselves. No increase in activity. No extra fitness added (I was already in the military and had plenty of exercise). It was challenging eating vegetarian in the military, but I began limiting myself to plant based foods. And then found the other reasons for doing it. Animal cruelty being one, and not having to worry about food poisoning from meat was another.
Anyway, thanks for continuing to make videos to both defend yourself, and point out what those other folks do to science. Even when science doesn't always seem to agree, it does agree that the American diet is the worst!

It's always seemed funny to me that people who promote an omnivorous diet accuse other people of having a bias without recognizing that their belief in an omnivorous diet also makes them biased. Taking the middle road is also a choice based upon your beliefs. Or as Rush once sang, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
Also, I'm a vegan bodybuilder. I think it's hilarious that he says you don't have much muscle because I'm looking at his physique and asking, "Does this guy even lift?" 😅 I'm not impressed at all by his physique. It's all subjective.

      @byggerEttSlott ปีที่แล้ว +10

On top of that, people that promote a “middle road diet” are more often than not doing so from a modern diet standpoint, meaning they think it is okay to have some fries, deep fried chicken and chocolate bars once in a while - just don’t eat too many of them and you’ll be fine!!
A middle road diet should probably be something closer to the Mediterranean diet, mostly plants and some fish. Which is arguably a very good diet, but as vegans know it is not the best one

    A few details:
    - At 20:57, I think those are cholesterol esters in yellow. The particle containing the triglycerides and cholesterol esters are the LDL themselves.
    - An interesting note from my analyses indicates that the liver packages more triglycerides in the smaller LDL particles, and more cholesterol esters (molecules) in the larger LDL, so there is some merit to the idea of looking at triglycerides since it affects LDL particle size. However, like you mentioned, all of that is background importance compared to the number of particles (submarines 😜), which is more important than the size.
Ok, I’m going to go back to whispering to my cells in the lab. Great work!!

I was tired of the poisons in especially meat products, pathogens and wondering if your stomach upset was from the meat you ate....again, even when cooked well. The contamination of land/water from the animals drives me crazy. I don't even like the smell or look of meat any more. About a month after going WFPB my work had a picnic that was catered and it was a pig roast, I brought a peanut butter/banana sandwich in case they had no options I could enjoy. I was so glad I did!not only was the food highly processed and vegetables were covered in stuff not good to eat but I had a hard time having an appetite with how bad it smelled! Got a question for you on the fish portion of the Mediterranean diet - since the market is being flooded with farm fed Salmon and that salmon isn’t getting the algae that makes them omega-3 rich, does that mean that people are getting the risks of eating fish without any of the benefits? I have heard that farm fed fish has the similar nutrient deprivation as Cows not having B12 in their diet and ranchers are injecting their cows with B12 (which you explained in detail in your B12 episode).
Animal cruelty aside, I’m not sure if nutrition/omega-3 is a good pro-fish diet anymore. The fish that people now living in their 100’s may no longer exist.

Keto was killing my gallbladder after two years of being on it. I had to go on a clean diet and keto is not a clean diet. Also I missed fruits and potatoes. My blood work is much better on a veggie diet and I lost more weight being a vegetarian.

Seems like just another guy trying to sell his viewers products. And besides his career in selling supplements, saying "I don't have skin in the game" when it effects the planet or health is even more ironic

This was fabulous. You lost me in a couple of your previous, more recent videos - they felt like ads for whatever that water fasting clinic is that was being advertised in them. In this video, I really appreciate your composure AND your willingness to question your own beliefs/bias & then make strong arguments. This provides a good example of why we need to questions what puts us in our own camps, whatever the topic, and ensure we are able to back up our perspectives in very practical ways. I don't think it's too much of a stretch too, to have a healthy dose of skepticism when youtubers (no matter how many letters are after their name) are making claims that also line their pockets ie. unregulated supplement sales

What exactly does "Vegan Activist" mean? What is so awful about being against animal cruelty and wanting to live on the Earth with as little damage to it's resources as possible? Not all vegans are perfect of course. But human species gluttony is killing our planet and some of us are very concerned for the future. I'm sorry that vegans activists interrupt people from their "mass-delusion of endless plentitude".

Meat eaters aren't biased, they hate every bite of steak, fish, chicken, egg and every sip of milk. They live in perpetual disgust and never look forward time. But that is the cost they pay for being non biased and only eating for pure nutritional requirements.

Could anyone refute any of these compelling reasons to boycott animal products?
1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases)
2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases
3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen.
4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year!
5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution
6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation
7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions.
8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity
9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified.
10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation.
    11- Longer lifespan.
12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.)
13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance
14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life
15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third!
16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health
17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella
18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing!
19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study
20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study)
Links for some of these are at my channel under "About."
If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. TH-cam only allows a certain number of links at my channel.
After I made my list, I found this video with his own list which overlaps mine. He cites evidence from credible sources in the description.

I could refute all of those. I was vegan 5 years and it's such an utter lie. (You may say plant based 5 years seeing I now eat animals). I became so ill I could barely function. And I covered all supposed nutritional factors.

plant agriculture causes nutrient run off that cause algae blooms and dead zones. crop protection killed billions annually that brings the items to the vegan menus. Not one word or activism for those animals. Vegan is not animal well being is misanthropy

I have never once felt like you cherry-picked, or suspected you were doing so. I think you give the information as concisely as possible, in videos you hope the algorithm likes and people will watch. But herein lies the utility of response videos. You could've let it slide, but I enjoyed the follow-up, the way you listened to his critiques, adjusted some of your wording, and stood by your original point.
I, too, am very suspicious of anyone talking nutrition AND selling supplements. Not because they are inherently untrustworthy, but because they stand to make money, and money corrupts.

On weight loss. I am obese, before going vegan I was at 332lbs I went vegan and dropped over 30 pounds. I've kept that off for 5 years. When I was on a vegetarian keto diet I dropped 150 pounds and gained back 200 after I quit. I'll take having a stable weight over yoyoing any day.
