- For this edition of Head 2 Head we take two insanely fast bikes from Twisted Development and put them on track together to find a winner. These bikes feature a host of similar items including Renthal, Moto Seat, De Cal Works graphics, Hinson, FMF exhaust, Works Connection, Enzo Suspension, and more. Hear what chief test rider Dennis Stapleton has to say about each bike and possibly which bike he might choose to ride full time.

Let me preface this comment by saying that I'm not a track guy, so take this for what it's worth. With that out of the way, having owned a 2015 YZ250FX and the 2017 YX250X, I can tell you the YZ250X is much more fun to ride than it's 4 stroke brother. All the buddies I ride with who spent time on both bikes agreed.
cobba innit
I have the 2021 YZ250X, modded like crazy to improve its trail capabilities and its by far the funnest bike I have ever owned
There is nothing that compares to riding a 250 2 stroke
Fun is why you spend the money in the first place two strokes win every time .
After reading what was done to each bike and how it cost an extreme amount of money more for the 4 stroke this is an easy win to the 2 stroke... I love both but $ for $ and the fact I'm not a pro and just having fun the 2 stroke wins hands down.
i grow up when only 2 strokes were out. so i have a soft spot for them. if im buying a bike its only 2 strokes.
and plus the sound, you cant beat it.
pls dont put music on the video, speciall when the bikes are reving and the music is soooo bad

I raced MX in the late 80's. I had a 1989 RM 125. Back then the two strokes were always king.
They dont make them like they used to
the fact that its an 09 vs a 2017 pretty much answers this debate. 2 strokes for life
you realize they havent hardly changed the yz250s since then, and you realize that in most cases the yz250f is supposed to be in the "lites" class not the premier class of the 250/450f?
Haven't changed much since 02 or 03,. My 04 is identical other than aluminum frame, Forks/triple. Every part i purchase is for a 16,17,18 ect. yz250 & steel frame is actually lighter than the new aluminum frames. Go figure
vinnie ortega ya but my yz450 eats any 2t around
Reno's Finest your 450 eats a 250........... Wow isnt that impressive lol. You are literally braindead if you really believe your statement. Were looking at an actuall comparison as in cc for cc. Two strokes make way more power and torque than a four stroke end of story, sorry you needed 200 extra ccs to compensate.
Christopher japanese manufacturers cared about profit, thats why four strokes were focused on. not environmental concerns.
They hardly said ANYTHING about the bikes other than "they're both awesome", and "one's a little cheaper to build". C'mon guys, give us some actual info. This is basically just clickbait.
Cool video! The 250F grunts like a 450 - very impressive.
2 stroke for me though. Fast, simple and bulletproof. Have an '01 CR250 with lotsa hours on it, that thing just keeps on running.
Craig Hoffman same bike, ported, head work, carb worked, piped, suspension worked........best 250 ever built period, nothing I have seen even comes close to the 01 engine.
agreed all about the cr, looking at a black 97 cr250 right now
00 and 01 cr 250s had the best engines. 02 and up had the best frames.
For me it comes down to that 2 stroke sound.
Four stroke man!

While I love reading 2 stroke articles why not change up from showing so much on the YZ and show more KTM/Husqvarna bikes? I use to have a YZ250 and thought it was a great bike but that was 10 years ago. The Yamaha 2 smokes have grown long in the tooth where KTM keeps there 2 strokes fresh and new. While the YZ250 might still be a pretty good bike we've known want it will do for years. And while the YZ250F is a very good bike so are the Katoom/Husqvarna twins and their 250 2 strokes are all new bikes this year.
While I give Yamaha props for still building 2 stroke motocross bikes, I give KTM even more props for continuously developing their 2 strokes instead selling bikes that are not that different or improved on compared to a 10 year old bike of the same model. JMO.
Good point, but I feel like it's a double edged sword because yeah it's sweet that KTM/Husqvarna are developing their 2 strokes, but as a result their more money and as you said here there aren't many reviews where as the Yamaha you know exactly what you're getting and when it comes repair time the Yamaha is cheaper. If I had the money I probably would own a KTM or Husqvarna but for the guy on a budget Yamaha all the way in my opinion.
But still it's hard beat yz's with the brand new KTM/husky
Anil T.V not really
I had a real nice 125 2 stroke husky that I got in a partial trade. It looked good. But sat a long time and was dead(dead, dead). Luckily not locked though. Didn't bother trying to fix carb, so I just replaced it with comorable to stock (couldnt find stock anywhere). And it needed a piston, and the cylinder resleeved. Lol couldnt find a bike shop that would touch it,and Im in Smryna GA. So I had to get a machine shop(one that mostly works on GM (car motor) blocks. They got it refurbished perfectly. Finally got this thing running. It is very light, but Id compare it to a yz to be honest. The year I had may have even been called a yz too. It was a cool rare bike to show off. But not nothing Id consider exotic or more sophisticated. For instance comparing my new Mercedes to my very nice Maxima. Both nice cars but the engineering im every aspect on german cars, night and day. You can feel it driving(especially in rain or dark) lol even feel it when you knock on the outter paneling. Husky 2 stroke was rare, which is why I got it running, but I wouldnt rather it than any other much easier accessible bike. And I have ownered and/or ridden about everything out there.
Why don't you make a comparison with the 2019 stock bikes instead of the ones that are excessively built.
This would be a more fair comparison for the customer
250 all the wayyyy. 250 > 250
lol same
Chaz Driver You don't get the joke -.-
mike gamer yes I do
Chaz Driver Then what is it?
mike gamer he doesn't say 2t or 4t just 250
The 250 2 stroke would smoke the 4 stroke
Kai Makani yeah, easy
Kai Makani Not so much. You think they're comparing them because it's not close? 99% of riders will be faster on the f over a moto. ESPECIALLY on a rough track.
Fred Crider III even though most test riders agreed that the 250F was harder to ride, yeah ok
Fred Crider III There's no comparison between a 250f and a 250t, the 2t is just going to have too much of a power advantage, you're comparing a low 40hp bike to a mid 50hp bike.
William Stewart motocrossactionmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/dec2016mainjet.jpg nah man the 250F's are catching up, at least the Austrian ones are. The 250F's rev way higher too
I just got a 2016 yz250f and it's bad ass can't wait to take it to the track
90% of our 4 test riders normally preferred the 2 stroke - wait - 90% of 4... O_o
Sterlin Smith no he said 90% of all the riders not just the 4
@@AverageGamerPlayz of Our Riders!!!
What puts a smile on your face is what's better. I use that philosophy with all toys whether it be dirt bikes, atv, or big motorcycles. For me the smiles come from 2 stroke dirt bikes, sport atvs, and Harley Davidson.
I have an 86 yz 490. I mainly desert ride in Southern California .
Although its heavy and pigish, it still blows out new 450s, especially with hill climbs.
That yz250 is sick ass shit!! Two smoker till I died. Nothing sounds better than a two stroke pinned out on a straight or railing a burm and panic revving over a jump lol
Aubrey Sweater
2 strokes making a comeback big time around my area!!! Tired of these money pit 4 chokers.
0:12 Just gave a thumbs up for the intro, coolest Intro I’ve ever seen 🙌🏻
i like both 2 strokes and 4 strokes, but honestly 2 strokes r better they have way more power, and r easier to handle.. but each to their own
You speak the truth my friend! Braaaaaap Braaaap Ting Ting Ting....
Patrick Steinmark exactly, all the controversy is quite stupid, i mean yea each r different in their own ways but they're still bikes and thats all that matters
Davin Drachenberg thanks fam
I like them both too.. But 2 strokes easier to control? That's complete bullshit..
Davin Drachenberg i mean it like turn and slide and stuff
Please discuss engine braking on the 4 stroke and how that affects steering, handling, cornering, etc.
I noticed the narrator said the shop that set the bikes up had "decreased the engine braking by 90%" on the 4 stroke.
I took that as a positive thing.
Thanks from an old 2 stroke guy.
id be interested to see how far he pushed the yz250 motor and was it built for leaded race fuel
you just got me to buy another magazine! Thx!
When the track is prime I love a 2 stroke. Every other time I'd rather ride a 250F.
2 stroke definitely has the better powerband which makes it quicker because of the low rpm advantage
introduction of the high output 4 strokes were mainly to drain wallets. business as usual
they sure don't make them cheap to run or work on huh
no because pollution
Why do people always dog on 4 strokes? 4 strokes have easier to access torque. You can putt on them and don't have to ride the throttle or clutch. And then people say 2 strokes are cheaper to rebuild. While that may be true, a 4 stroke top end probably lasts twice as long (2 stroke rebuild every 50 hours, and 4 stroke rebuild every 100). I love both 2 strokes and 4 strokes. They both have their pros and cons.
Now I have a question XD. I want to get a used 125 2 stroke, what make/model/year would be the best? Reliability is my main concern.
Honestly ,i could have a blast on either of these bikes. Just get out there ,and ride!
2 stroke way more fun and addicting, no question about it - had both. 2t always
De toda la vida 2T. Ojalá un dia en las pistas vuelva a escucharse solo los motores 2 strokes.
To each their own and opinions are just that opinions. And in my OPINION 4T's are better. This is because of the sound and overall better handling. Besides people might say they're more expensive but in truth both 4T and 2T are almost exactly the same, 2T's need a rebuild sooner and more often whereas with a 4T it's the opposite. So enjoys hat you ride and don't let anyone tell you otherwise :D
2 strokes make more power per cc. I would like to see 250cc allowed in the lites class.
Steven horsefield aparantly you can now race a 250 2 stroke in the 250 class at Loretta’s at least
Put fuel injection on that old smoker motor and they will never sell another 4 stroke bike.
that's true!
how will efi make the two-stroke so much better they will not want a 4-stroke ever again?
Its "tune-ability" reasons. It can suck going from 0-5000' ft with carbs. Fuel injection is why the modern 450's are so nice for sno-bikes. Now carbs REALLY suck at 8,000 ft! All the pro motocross wrenches just change the mapping from track to track during the nationals instead of having to change motor internals and carb jets....LAZY mechanics is all we have now addicted to their laptops and hand held map tuners. Just think if I could re-jet my 300 for 8,000ft in a few seconds with a little computer I carry in my fanny pack!
that will never happen because 4 strokes are torque monsters, and beat any 2 smoker you can throw at them
NoStress90s a 250 two-stroke makes way more torque than a 250 4-stroke
riding mx since 1980. 2 strokes truck 4 strokes suck. after repairing 4 strokes and seeing the cost involved I will never buy another one. also I'm not racing to beat bubba. I ride more to teach the kids and play around now that I'm in my 40s and have a hard time with busted bones slowing me down. few mins on the bike and I'm fast again. bikes fix me up better then any chiropractor visit..... gotta ride
And that's the thing really. Ride what suits you and your situation. I've ridden and raced 250f's, 250 (2T), 450f and personally I preferred the 450 fi for racing motocross. More controll and power to the ground. However, given all my injuries, I'm going to stop racing MX and get back into trail/enduro riding, and swapping to a 300cc 2 stroke. If I was racing, 450 all the way, but as you mentioned, rebuilds cost too much.
A spethal treat
I dont care about feelings just post the lap times of each rider on both bikes
The AMA should allow two strokes and four strokes. Let the riders decide.
2 strokes are permitted but they are crippled with having to use STD fuel.guys still try to qualify with them now but they are at a disadvantage with current displacement rules
Cool test, thanks for doing this!!!
Why wouldn’t you line the 250 2 stroke up with the 450 4 stroke????
Is it bad to have a 2 stroke and just puts around slowly in the trails? Because a beginners will most likely do that which I imagine will make the bike flood a bit. And doing that often can’t be too good. Not sure if that’s what would happen just something that seems ideal. Anyone who has insight on this please let me know. 2 strokes like to be wide open throttle getting into that powerband it’s what it’s made for so just curious if it’s capable to just be gentle sometimes.
What lap time to compare one driver on different motorcycles?
Максим Андреев *rider
Open your ears and not your ass.....he said FOUR test riders 😒 this guy lol jk 😂😂😂
alexzanderarmstrong yea but he said driver not rider😂
What's the cost difference between 2 stroke 4 stroke and how often do you have rebuild
If you buy a seat cover online does it come with the padding or does it have to specifically say “seat” not “seat COVER”???
2 strokes always take the cake bro you know that
2 strokes are so fun. But there are some good thumpers out there as well. Any dirtbike can be a lot of fun really.
If you rode both the same, would one wear out or break down faster than the other??
Own a couple of both, I like the 250 2t better for enduro and trails, 450 4t better for motocross and desert, 250 4t better for putting around my farm and taking my dogs out squirreling, and a 125 2t that's my practice/beater/spare bike, a 4t SV650 for track days at road courses, and a 124 4t stunt scooter for wheelies in my driveway...
I got question is there any difference between 250 and 450 regarding the size of the bike? Weight?
I have an 06 yzf 250 2 stroke fully rebuilt engine in it when dies the power valve cut ?
our riders weighed 130-190lbs did you have any adults ride them i haven't weighed 130lbs since middle school lmao
Okay?
So you were fat growing up, cool?
Im 5'11 200LBS. Am i a good size for these bikes?
The two stroke Yamaha engine hasn't been updated since 2005. It still has more HP than the four stroke.
It's because the motor spins faster
that fmf pipe on the 250 is gorgeous
Thomas Winfree they're both 250's?
Robert Wood I was talking about the two stroke
Thomas Winfree yeah I agree
I love my 4 stroke sooo powerful in the sound is beautiful beast sound you when you turn that beats on
Love a 2 banger but these 2017 250f are next level. I'd have both of them, as well as a 09 yz 125. 09 was the year for race for Yamaha 2 stroke. They need to come back with a with the 2 bangers
Caleb Hale yamaha still makes 2 strokes... you can go get a 2017 yz tomorrow if you want
2 stoke wins easy. Theres a sain if uou can ride a two stroke fast you can rife a 4 stroke fast. Unfortunately not the other way around. 2 strokes make you a better rider and are lighter easier to handle and less money to operate and fix
defintely true for me, i got a kx250 after being on a ktm 400exc and riding the 2 stroke really makes you practice your skills more rather than just relying on the torque and stability of the 4 stroke, i'm a much better rider of 4 strokes now i mostly ride 2 stroke.
You failed to mentioned the fact that if you can ride a 2 stroke fast, you'll be able to ride a 4 stroke faster... Def much easier to work on though. I wouldn't dare pull a modern 4 stroke apart to rebuild myself, although I did my CR rebuilds easy as
There is a "sain" if you cant type stop making comments.
m1ke2001 ....sayin
m1ke2001 yea i was typing fast. Sorry you must be a four stroke fan
In all honesty my first race bike was a 2stroke but then I just recently got my hands on a 4 stroke and I must say that the power delivery is way smoother but I haven't ran into the rebuild side of things yet... what's the true rebuild cost of a 4 stroke vs 2 stroke and how many times do you rebuild them???
Everyone has their own taste and preference, videos like these are just for comparison really not what you would say ' VS ' but 2 smoker allll the way
Faster or not 2 strokes will always be the kings of the dirt bike world period
Yz 250fx build next please
Sorry but to me dirt is 2stroke, workin the powerband is an art, and the smell 😊
what plastic series is on the yz250 ?? its not OEM ?
This is how it should be cc for cc racing - same size 2 or 4 stroke!
does the F stand for 4 stroke? need to know if i should buy a 250F or normal yz250
2stroke for racing 4stroke for trail riding to your bushcraft camp🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
Long live the 2stroke 250!
It's crazy to me that the two bikes are even being compared. A lot has changed I guess. My 98 kx 250, blows my dads 2006 CRF 250 out of water not even in the same ball park. But my CR 125r is more on the same level as the CRF 250.
Can someone please help me. I am looking at getting a 2015 yz250f. I’m coming off an 06 wrf250. Will the yz be much faster and more exciting? Thank you:)
deacon Burton not too much faster but a lot lighter and harder to keep under you
I'm 5foot8 and weight 165 also im a beginner if i take it slow could I learn on 250 2 stroke
agreed with this video...Both are good
Biggest down side to the 2 stroke is the carb, that’s why I didn’t get one and opped for the 4 stroke
They should let the 250 2 stroke race in the lites class.
Cc for cc two-stroke is far superior
Rockie mountin if you're counting horsepower to weight, yeah. Torque at low rpm does have it's merits though. it may be a different story on a very technical Wooded Trail.
Picked up a 2 stroke 250
Way to fast and scary, looking for a 125 now. Lol
Try riding a big bore 2t.
Cr 500, yz 490 , kx500 if you really want to scared.
Two stroke folk right here ✋
nice videos guys
friend; You can never compare, they are two different mechanical systems, in the same time span the 4 strokes consumes half the gasoline than the 2 strokes. If you want to compare the versatility of the two systems with the same consumption, you should fold the 4 TIMES, 500 4t Vs. 250 2t, would be the most fair.
Piff chasinstackz your joking right? Or are you the guy who rides a bike and knows nothing about it and relies on the shop to fix everything. Get your shit right and do research in the 4 stroke engine. Completely different than you think
4 stroke for me more fun and the power is insane on some bikes like the yz 250f and crf 250r
well obviously the 250 two stroke will smoke a 250f there to different classes and thats why 250 two strokes run with the 450 class, this vid would of been better with a new 125cc vs a 250f
they're not two different classes they're both 250 cc bikes the 4-stroke just doesn't make any damn power
They make similar peak power when built, but the smoker makes way more torque
2009-2017 see the diffrence
Mason Gibbs the yz250 hasnt changed since 2005 when it got an aluminum frame even then the the engine hasnt realy change in 20 years
why did you not use a 2017 YZ 250 ?
What rim sized they used?
THAT MOMENT WHEN YOU HIT POWER BAND RININGIGNINGINGING
What is a magazine??
Kapan bisa ke beli kaya gitu.walapun pnya KLX Banga jga lah
2 STROKE IS THE BEST PERFORMER
Just listen to what he says he even knowns the 2 stroke is better!!!! 2 strokes for life!!!!!!
How much would one of those yz250's go for
When youre doing a vs video, you're supposed to have a winner. What were the lap times? Why leave me hanging?
2 stroke all day. didnt appreciate the venga boys soundttack tho
I love dirt bikes! I own a yzf r1 it’s awsome
MXA never fails to deliver no real information, and just show off shiny motorcycles.
whats wrong with engine braking?its a 4stroke.if engine braking is problem4u just buy 2 stroke.i love engine braking, thats a nice bonus when riding bigger older 4strokes.
No doubt, my 02 CRF450 has a lot of engine braking. In some situations it's nice, some situations not so nice. I'm running one tooth smaller than stock on the rear sprocket, that calmed down the engine braking a little.
Two stokes are fun but i feel like four strokes are more reliable and smoother due to no power band
2 stroke FTMFW
can't wait for the yzinger 50 vs 450F in a couple years.
Why are you comparing bike from 2 different classes?
jason fletcher because you’re allowed to race the 250 2 stroke in the 250f class because of how much the 4 strokes have caught up.
And here I am like an idiot thinking a 250T was a competitor to the 450F.
Anyone know how the 300T big bore kits go vs a 450F?
