Heavy, and the oil holding aluminum frame spars get warm under your legs, but,an impressive bike, for a 2003
One reason is because they are insanely bulletproof. I blew a chunk about a 1/2" × 1/4" (or 1/8") off the top of the piston and it still ran. The piece didnt even touch the cylinder when it somehow shot out the exhaust. It ran like shit and wouldnt hit the powerband, but my 2007 YZ250 ran with a chipped piston.
Love 2 strokes. They've all I've ridden for over 10 years. Owned a yz125 and 2 yz250s among many others. My next bike however will be a 450. After riding friends bikes they're a lot nicer on the track.
I grew up on 2 strokes and 4 strokes. I have always loved 2 strokes more than a 4 stroke. Both have their pros and cons but I will always be a 2 stroke guy.

It may be wrong to say the 2-stroke is harder to ride than a 4-stroke. I prefer to say a 2-stroke takes more skill to ride than a 4-stroke, which is why we ride them. :)
Because the power sound reliability ease of maintenance makes 2t way more exciting to ride !!! Give me a well tuned 2t 250 and it will leave 4t in the dust every time with right rider !!!
Love my 2018 Yz250x .. Others say we where worried about you on that hill climb, that we thought you where going to stall out !! I replied, nope I never got worried, the bike is a tractor with the hybrid tire and a tubliss !!
The YZ 250 2 stroke is the AK-47 of dirt bikes I owned a heavily modified one for 5 years and it is in my opinion the best bike ever created by human hands, needless to say those were probably the best 5 years of my entire life. Low maintenance, reasonably prices spares and absolute monstrous power given the bikes low weight , vastly superior to a 250f & 350f imo. 450f’s are too expensive to fix if you are just a casual rider ( like most people are ) especially when you start putting on high performance aftermarket parts on them #5 hour engine.
I find a 250 2 stroke much easier to ride than a 4 stroke on trails out in forest. Much lighter and sharper handling/braking and does exactly what you want it to do from the blip of the throttle
I know I love the YZ250 YAMAHA 2 STROKE and been loving those bikes since the 80's and 90's. reason why I like it so much because the sound and the power band from the top end. I can't change that and because i grow up with these YZ125 AND 250. EVEN KAWASAKI kx Were my touchy bike, too.
Because people like to support the only Japanese Manufacturer that still produces the Retired Premier Classes. Sure they haven't changed much in the engine department yet they still update the chassis on the modern ones which make them easily accessible to modern bikes. Modern two strokes ftw definitely want to get a yz250 especially the 2018 - 2022 with those blue rims!!
@Badass Skepticfor the holeshot maybe not, but in real race 4 strokes are faster because they can find traction everywhere. Especially when the tract conditions are not perfect
@Badass Skeptic 450's have more toque yes, but its not just that, its is how the power comes on. The traction on the 4 T is all delivery, that higher torque curve is spread out over a longer rpm range where the 2T hits in peak in a narrower rpm range causing wheel spin. To ride the 2t fast the rider has to develop clutch skills to keep things gripping. Same goes for the 500, most riders who raced them were in fact just as fast if not faster on their 250 2t's because the 500 power hit so hard and kicked their butts. Modern 450's are pushing the same if not higher stock power numbers as the old 500's and its spread out over more rpm. But no one smiles when they ride a 4t, every 2t rider knows the grin when the power comes on.
Sorry man, this is backwards. Four strokes need to be twice the cc to even come close to beating the power band of a two stroke.. I've never ever had problems beating any four strokes. But I will say this, they're both way different animals which serve the same purpose. To Have Fun... Lol..

When I was a kid I got my first 1977 YZ 80, then in 1978 they came out with the first mono shock and I think in 1980 the first water cooled bike, that was a big deal for all us dirt bike riders, the rest was all history, 4 strokes were not developed yet,,,the 1985 YZ250 was my favorite at that time, then all us guys were riding the Yamaha RD 400 ,s and RZ 350,s dude we were smoking, now I'm old and I bought a new 2017 YZ125 for trail riding
Yep the rush u get from the powerband is what keeps me a 2 stroke guy I have 4 strokes but I mostly ride my 2 strokes unless I'm leisurely riding the the woods with groups of people
Let's see, simple and cheap to fix, lighter, and there is nothing like the feeling of a 2 stroke powerband. If you know how to ride a 2 stroke theres nothing that comes close.
Yes, I love Yamaha. Because Yamaha Motorcycles are made to last for your whole lifetime. If possible I want to custom build and order a street legal 2 Strokes Dual Sports WR or DT or R Series. WR150RX/ WR200RX/ WR250RX.
I own 3 dirtbikes and a street bike a yz250, a yz450f, a xr650r, and a r6 I can tell I fucking love my yz250 I had it rebuilt once and it's a beast I use my 450 for racing cause they hate two strokes here in cali lol
PEOPLE BUY THE YZ 250 BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN THE SAME BIKE FOR A LONG AND THE NEWER PLASTIC FITS THEM AND YOU CAN MAKE YOU OLD BIKE LOOK LIKE A NEW ONE. That's the main reason. the 2nd reason is because it's one of the best bikes ever made
Because they are reliable as Hell and make good power. Plus they are comparatively cheap. The X would really sell if they added e start and a WR trans. 2Ts are just awesome in general. While I have a soft spot for the 250 Yam, I have an '18 KTM 300 XC with V4 reeds, an S3 head and a Lectron on it. The bike is awesome beyond words with power everywhere, great handling, e-start and counterbalanced glassy smoothness in a two stroke. I am 57, been riding and occasionally racing dirt bikes for over 40 years, and it is my mid life crisis dirt bike, as one has to wonder how many years they have left at this point. The KTM 300 is an amazing machine. Not cheap, but fuck it, I am not getting any younger, and I have the money - LOL
I totally agree! Same here with me! 52.5 years old & a shop full of 2-strokes! Ride them regularly! Still just as fun as when I was 11 years old. Been riding since then!
Do you know why people love a yz 250? It is because they are fun to ride. Not super easy or super fast, but 10x the fun. Simple as that - there is always a smile on the riders face.
I can't remember every yz250 build I've ever read, but I have a couple questions. If you have a bike intended for mx, how much of a difference does it make having one guy port the engine and work the head versus another? If you picked two guys to build you an engine with the exact same intended use, rider skill, and fuel, how much different would the engines be? The reason I'm asking this is because there are 7 common configurations of the yz250 engine that people build. 1-stock, 2-stock with 93 octane head mod, 3-stock with 50/50 race/pump gas head, 4-stock with race gas head, 5-porting with 93 octane head, 6-porting with 50/50 race/pump gas head, 7-porting with race gas head. I'm sure people make big bores, strokers, and big bore strokers in those 7 configurations. I guess the same question can be asked about suspension also. Obviously I'm just using mx as an example. You could swap mx for sx, gncc, worcs, desert, hard enduro, and trail. Another factor is if the race gas that is being used is leaded and/or oxygenated or neither. What characteristics did the TMR engine have versus other yz250 engines that have been done in the same configuration, intended use, and rider skill? What characteristics did the TMR engine have versus other yz250 engines intended for mx, but not the same designated rider skill and/or fuel? thanks
The porting for MX use can give better hit and overall power but also make it a bit tougher to ride so maybe better suited for a more aggressive rider and you might have to shift a bit more.
Used to be able to pick up YZs at sweet deals, had a 00 I paid 1500 for and a 01 I had 1200 in that were in excellent shape. Now I recently searched for another and everything under 3k I kept finding total garbage. Ended up with a clean 13 for 4K which I think is nuts but I just wanted a nice one.
I have 15 hrs on my 19 Ktm300xcw tpi. I cant attack single track on it the way I can on my 16 250x. Heading to race this weekend and I am taking the 250x while the $9,000 ktm sits at home. Kinda pisses me off actually. Hoping a Rekluse fixes the issue (250x has one).
love 2 stroke yzs and basically any yamaha. imo yamaha has the best engineers. all the parts are interchangeable between bikes. take a master cylinder for instance. that fits on a yz 250, 125 blaster, banshee etc. yamaha makes awesome 2 stroke atvs and one of the most badass street bikes in history (the rz 350) every time i go to the track, multiple people have yzs, whether they are new ones, or the steeleys. such a great bike and im glad yamaha still puts out new models each year. yes they havent changed much, but what they are doing is putting out lots of parts for people to have access to in order to keep their bike maintained. the last cr 125/250 was in 2007. Yamaha as of 2020 still puts those out. Whose parts will be easier to source in 20 years?
Because they over rev and Yamahas are great anyway. Always run race gas in a race bike, it runs cooler as well. Honestly it looked better before the change
Would it be okay to run straight 100LL avgas, mixed with pre-mix oil? We've been buying VP110 and mixing 50/50 with 91 pump gas that contains ethenol. I work at the airport and it would be very easy for me to just buy 100LL isntead but I've heard it's bad for some reason.
Also there is a very short video on my channel of the bike running when it was idling just a couple of days ago. The most recent video is the one I'm talking about the one where it's smoking a lot I fixed it since then I ended up having to get a new set of cases for the bike and it was leaking a lot
great looking bikes, always wanted to build one myself, just not sure whether mx or woods build.. I am also not a big fan of 2 stroke on the track, I dont really know how to ride them on the track..
When I said the holeshot,as soon as I hit 3rd gear I noticed and remember ed I did use cam 2 race fuel, versus straight 93 pump gas,now the ethanol free is a good option but it s mostly only 89 octane so u have to seek out 93 ethanol free, before u get serious and fibro race fuel.piece out....

That's one tough sumbitch
Always apreciate a nice yami 2smoker, however the RMs are where my heart belongs
I have a pretty mint 1994 YZ250 and it’s sooo much fun haha
The YZ 250 is a bike for fun and fun doesn’t need pure performance.
Run my '02 in the woods, single track, hare scramble. Can't be beat out does the 450 I used to run, never stalls.
Love my 2 strokes, gotta run Castor 927. I do miss my 01 YZ250, it was stolen. Currently racing a 2001 Service Honda built CR500AF.
Great frame, engine, and suspension, very light.
I got a 250 exc and it’s got well over 100 hours still running strong, never had problems.
One of the lucky ones
Before watching the video my guess was their motors. The YZ 2 Stroke motors make big power. I ride a 300XC and can't deny the YZ motors are excellent.
hezzdown same here, I love my 300xc but a yz250 is more fun to ride imo
Very well engineered bike, Yamaha and Honda were always neck to neck with each other. The YZ250 is my favorite 2 smoke, braap juice for life 👍
Right on!
I’ve ridden both 2 and 4 strokes and I love my yz 250 for trail riding and the odd track ride. 4 strokes are good too especially for beginners.
When a 4 stroke blows up or gives valvetrain issues which they WILL, look out get the visa ready
1991tommygun 4 strokes are actually not as expensive as you think.
Scott Withrow ur telling the guy who has 2 banshees in the garage and had a ktm 525xc and yfz450, lets just say i dont buy 4 chokes anymore unless its an aircooled bike like a 400ex
My drz400 has been amazing so reliable 40,000kms so far and no rebuilds only usual maintenance
@@TC-iz6xe yes i will agree but im talking about high compression racing 4 stroke engines, the Drz is a trail oriented engine, very reliable
@@1991tommygun yeah true. Alot of people under estimate the Drz's capabilities untill you pass blokes on the big Ktms
Fast, Reliable, and they sound like music to my ears
The bike hits all 5 senses- Sight-Gorgeous,Smell-2- stroke oil burning,Touch- Vibration powerband hit, Sound-Incredible noise,Taste- 2-stroke oil burning
I love my steel frame 99'YZ250. 292.3 cc kit added.
Runs great and is so much "fun" to ride.
I wouldn't own a 4 stroke.
My yz250 87 ! Was crazy I was 14 ripped up everything school fields tracks roads my feet didn't even touch floor !!! Still had grunt !! Going for wr 450 this spring yammys !!!!!!!!
It may be wrong to say the 2-stroke is harder to ride than a 4-stroke. I prefer to say a 2-stroke takes more skill to ride than a 4-stroke, which is why we ride them. :)
i run a similar fuel/oil set up (50/50 C12, 91 pump) in my 03 CR250 and i can attest it smells great. nothing like it!
Why can’t we agree that 4 strokes and 2 strokes are both good 😌 and they have there differences
Yes and all the brands are good
Fuckin thor?
Because the power sound reliability ease of maintenance makes 2t way more exciting to ride !!! Give me a well tuned 2t 250 and it will leave 4t in the dust every time with right rider !!!
Power and suspension for me love my 250X
Love my 2018 Yz250x .. Others say we where worried about you on that hill climb, that we thought you where going to stall out !! I replied, nope I never got worried, the bike is a tractor with the hybrid tire and a tubliss !!
There X is a beast on hill climbs. especially with tubliss, soft tires and super low psi.
My 250x is the best bike I've owned ridden so far. I've ridden a decent amount of bikes too
Hard to be humble when you ride the best.....Yamaha!
Because 2 strokes are amazing and Yamaha is the only company still making one worth buying.
To quote Super Hunky, sage of old, you can race a coffee table if you throw on enough new parts.....
I find a 250 2 stroke much easier to ride than a 4 stroke on trails out in forest. Much lighter and sharper handling/braking and does exactly what you want it to do from the blip of the throttle
HIT DAT POWABAND BABAYYY
Absolute nonsense...
@@BobSmith-cb5xr there is a good reason why all extreme enduro riders use a 2 stroke !
I love mine! made riding fun for me again
Pull out the silly aluminum clutch plated and install steel plates. That helps a lot and the oil stays clean longer too.
Stiil waiting for it ❤️
Test drive
YamahaYZ250
People buy the YZ250 because is fun to ride.
You can go fastet on a 4 stroke definitely but 2 strokes are generally more fun
Lol..
Great build man. I love the blue color, looks so much better!
True brother, I still ride my 77 400 it’s fun ,love it
I have an 08 YZ450F, but I’d love to build a yz125 one of these days!
Air Raid Drones i have a yz125 and want a 450, trade? jk i really love my yz125
@@anthonyvu749 turned 39 , used to ride yz80s and 125s 20 plus years ago. Just got the itch put for my depo on the 2021 yz125!! Waiting for it to come anyway now. Just a little worried at 220lbs I might be a but heavy for it, but was leary of getting a 250 due to not having ever ridden 1 and have not rode in over 20 years lol. Hope I made the right call.
Jess Arellanes I’m about to buy an 84 YZ250 for cheap!
the power band is what’s additive tbh
Yep the rush u get from the powerband is what keeps me a 2 stroke guy I have 4 strokes but I mostly ride my 2 strokes unless I'm leisurely riding the the woods with groups of people
Let's see, simple and cheap to fix, lighter, and there is nothing like the feeling of a 2 stroke powerband. If you know how to ride a 2 stroke theres nothing that comes close.
Exactly right!
So easy to rebuild, for one. Fast and fun secondly.
Yes, I love Yamaha. Because Yamaha Motorcycles are made to last for your whole lifetime.
If possible I want to custom build and order a street legal 2 Strokes Dual Sports WR or DT or R Series. WR150RX/ WR200RX/ WR250RX.
Over Kawasaki Dirt Bikes
I own 3 dirtbikes and a street bike a yz250, a yz450f, a xr650r, and a r6 I can tell I fucking love my yz250 I had it rebuilt once and it's a beast I use my 450 for racing cause they hate two strokes here in cali lol
Amazing that the bike is so awesome after more than a decade of no R&D at all. Imagine if they put some effort into designing a new generation?
As you may see in this profile picture, No time better than the present. Dr.2T called for a 22yz, No Better Way To Ride The Day
PEOPLE BUY THE YZ 250 BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN THE SAME BIKE FOR A LONG AND THE NEWER PLASTIC FITS THEM AND YOU CAN MAKE YOU OLD BIKE LOOK LIKE A NEW ONE. That's the main reason. the 2nd reason is because it's one of the best bikes ever made
@Badass Skeptic ktm yamaha husky beta sherco gas gas tm
@Badass Skeptic not jus ktm! sherco, gas gas, husky and maico!
Perfect power delivery 👌
Not cheap, but fuck it, I am not getting any younger, and I have the money - LOL
duken4evr But they don’t turn worth a damn
There's no such thing as too much power on a dirt bike, I want unlimited band and power for days !
Always Inspiring, thanks Jay. It would be awesome to see a 04 yz250 build with the prettied up frame. 👍
th-cam.com/video/CnykHj0XXhA/w-d-xo.html check this one out we just did--
Cause they are the best, duh. Just got a 2003 yz 250 lovvvvbbe it.
In my childhood and teenage years I literally put thousands of hours on YZ's and never even used the rebuild kit the bikes comes with lol
Love my 16 yz250x. Even my bro likes it and he has a 18 300 te
Did the recluse fix it?
@@dannelson3432 ?
Lol 30-40 hours on a top end? I go like 500 before replacing
Bought at a good price, would love to know what that price was. Wouldn't everyone else?
$1000
Toss a flywheel weight on, Gnarly Pipe, drop a tooth on the front sprocket and you have one of the best Woods Bikes made.
Because they’re awesome. I’m on yz250 number 5
I'm planning to put one in my garage to keep my 2019 300xc company
I'm going to by a brand new 2022 YZ250 this September. I'm 45 and my last new bike was in 2006 (KX125). Used bikes have problems.
love 2 stroke yzs and basically any yamaha. imo yamaha has the best engineers. all the parts are interchangeable between bikes. take a master cylinder for instance. that fits on a yz 250, 125 blaster, banshee etc. yamaha makes awesome 2 stroke atvs and one of the most badass street bikes in history (the rz 350)
every time i go to the track, multiple people have yzs, whether they are new ones, or the steeleys. such a great bike and im glad yamaha still puts out new models each year. yes they havent changed much, but what they are doing is putting out lots of parts for people to have access to in order to keep their bike maintained. the last cr 125/250 was in 2007. Yamaha as of 2020 still puts those out. Whose parts will be easier to source in 20 years?
I do love the smell of octane in the morning...
Email me directe-- contact in bio-
Also there is a very short video on my channel of the bike running when it was idling just a couple of days ago. The most recent video is the one I'm talking about the one where it's smoking a lot I fixed it since then I ended up having to get a new set of cases for the bike and it was leaking a lot
its ashame the Yamaha with the yzs didn't keep their original colors with white plastics and hot pink seat
Blue, Best sound, Fast, Fun. Here i saved everyone some time and you dont have watch this video😂
so ppl "love" them bc they are cheap? man I'm glad I watched this
I have a 2019 yz 125 it’s dope
great looking bikes, always wanted to build one myself, just not sure whether mx or woods build.. I am also not a big fan of 2 stroke on the track, I dont really know how to ride them on the track..
Oh -- You will be great on the track in a short time-- Go Moto!
Build a yz 250 for woods riding that would be dope 🤘🏼
Smooth throttle and wide open, lots of clutch to prevent spinning the rear tire when its slick.
And they sound great
When I said the holeshot,as soon as I hit 3rd gear I noticed and remember ed I did use cam 2 race fuel, versus straight 93 pump gas,now the ethanol free is a good option but it s mostly only 89 octane so u have to seek out 93 ethanol free, before u get serious and fibro race fuel.piece out....
Just got one of these, fun bike
The same reason everybody loves banshees. They badass.
It just looks good.
2005 YZ125 2 smoker all day. Light, aggressive, and balls-to-the-wall.
My perfect 250 2 Stroke would be a YZ 250 engine in a CR250 frame.
