thanks for the video. i am a first yr boat owner so this was a good starting point for me. I have a 2008 330 sea ray and have a leak on both rudders. Pulled boat out first wk of December. Against my better judgement I also used a pipe wrench that i cut 8" off the handle to be able to get a half turn on it. i pulled the nut off and found 4 full pieces in the packing nut. they didn't seam damaged but they were dry as a bone. Hope to finish job by next wk

Use a wood screw and drive it into the packing. Use pliers to pull.

I’m getting ready to tighten my packing nut but if the leak doesn’t stop I’ll replace the packing. I replaced the packing in my driveshaft stuffing box while in the water and it was no problem but I am reluctant to do the same on my rudder as gravity and the weight of the rudder might cause problems, like the rudder might slide down or I might get too much water resulting in an unscheduled haul out. One thing you should do different is, don’t use a pipe wrench “monkey wrench”, a pipe wrench is for pipe. Always use two large crescent wrench’s when working with brass packing nuts. Save the pipe wrench for your galvanized pipe going to your house. Otherwise good video thanks 🥴

Hello frem Denmark. GREAT video by the way.....I own a sea ray 340 - 2001....and both rudders are leaking a lot, and can't tighten the nuts anymore. Whats the size of the greased packing, and did you tighten up the lower locking nut to the bottom of the upper nut.?

Best way I found to cut the packing bring up a little 2x4 or 2x6 with you and a hammer and a chisel put the chisel on it and it with the hammer bam you won't get any of the strands peeling works out better

Very helpful. Thanks. Had no idea how this all works. Disappointed for the moments where the mechanic's head got in the way.........and...........disappointed that the film ended before the job was complete. I know, I know only a few turns remained, but how tight do you beef down the packing nut, how tight the lock nut.
I think there are different sizes for packing material. How do I figure out what size to buy for the job?
    Again, very informative.
    Many thanks.

Why are you packing this shaft with new packing when you did not clean the shaft? This will only cause the packing to deteriorate quicker.

Use the proper wrenches and not the pipe wrench that you used and the nuts will last much longer. Also if you had released the locking nut first you would have saved yourself some extra work.

We never twist the packing nut when repacking, this only twist's the packing and puts it in a bind causing it to either leak or swell and cause heat that scars the shaft. Try cutting a peice of PVC half the same diameter of the shaft and peck it in place. This assures you it goes in straight and want bind.

@@svoceanghost7734 Hmm. I didin't understand this answer. The packing nut must be twisted/turned to be loosened and screwed off, doesn't it? As Dale wrote; fist loosening the counter-nut would make it easier to loosen the packing-nut.
