  • Live at Montreux 2003 is a live album from the English progressive rock band Yes. It is a live recording of the group's headlining concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival on 14 July 2003. This is the first official album to feature the classic line-up of lead vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman, bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White since the 1996/1997 Keys to Ascension live albums, along with a DVD also entitled Keys to Ascension. The album was released on September 3, 2007, during a hiatus in the band's activity following a tour ending in 2004.

    *Lyrics:*
Love comes to you and you follow
Lose one on to the heart of the sunrise
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the wind with its arms
    All around me
Lost on a wave and then after
Dream on, on to the heart of the sunrise
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the wind with so many around me
    Lost in the city
Lost in their eyes as you hurry by
Counting the broken ties they decide
Love comes to you and then after
Dream on, on to the heart of the sunrise
Lost on a wave that you're dreaming
Dram on, on to the heart of the sunrise
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the wind with its arms all around me
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the wind with so many around me
I feel lost in the city
Lost in their eyes as you hurry by
Counting the broken ties they decided
    Straight light moving and removing
SHARPNESS of the colour sun shine
Straight light searching all the meanings
    Of the song
Long last treatment of the telling that
Relates to all the words sung
Dreamer easy in the chair that really fits you
Love comes to you and then after
Dream on, on to the heart of the sunrise
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the sun with its arms all around me
    SHARP-DISTANCE
How can the wind with so many around me
I feel lost in the city

You shared the lyrics, but I am just as lost as before. Jon Anderson has said in an interview that some of their lyrics may have had some chemical influence/inspiration. I would include this song as one of the more chemically influenced songs in their repertoire.

    • @MysticRhythmsLive
      @MysticRhythmsLive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jtostros Perhaps ... Abstract
Yes's ‘Heart of the Sunrise’ addresses one of the primary concerns of the counterculture: the alienation of the individual from humanity by the dominant consumerist, a plastic culture, represented by the city. In their expression of the effects of alienation, Yes expanded the musical vocabulary of rock, for while the allusive imagery of the song's text relates the locus of the protagonist and his being ‘lost’ amid the population of the city, the arrangement of the song and the purely instrumental passages lay bare the frustration of an individual unable to establish intimate, human relationships. Contemporary commentary on hippie perceptions of, and reactions to, mainstream culture provides a background to an analysis that demonstrates the descriptive power of the instrumental passages in this 1971 work. (Published online information by the Cambridge University Press: 08 September 2015)

@@MysticRhythmsLive Thank you for that thoughtful analysis! I don't think I would ever arrive at a similar interpretation from the lyrics as they are presented in the song, but I can see how your interpretation can fit the lyrics. Did the lyrical meaning of the song get discussed in an interview at some point?

    • @MysticRhythmsLive
      @MysticRhythmsLive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jtostros My own interpretation of the song is similar to the one noted above which was published online by the Cambridge University Press on September 8, 2015. I'm pretty sure you can find in person interviews if you take the time to google the song and the band. Good luck!

I have a question for you if you don't mind about Rickenbacker bass guitars.. is it true you need to use flat wound strings and not round wound.. I remember a bassist telling me that in the late 70s.. I believe he actually said you "CAN'T" use a round wound string for whatever reason.. I figured if anyone knew it would be you.. I'm asking because my friend found one in a pawn shop and he's gonna have to resting it ...

Been playing the bass for what, 45 odd years, worked hard, real hard, NEVER been able to come close to this man apart from his simplest lines ( ? ). Pure torture.
Seen every gig they did in Montréal. Always FULL house and some. Amazing.
Studied McCartney, got a Hoffner violin, cool, got it. Looked, listened to, damn, what's his name, ah yeah, John Illsley from Dire Staits... Low profile. Interesting style. Not obvious with Knopfler. Got it.
And so on and on. Obsession. Squire ? Not even close. Maddening. My mentor, my exuberant hero. Gone way too soon. Sad. :(

Chris Squire has been my hero since I heard the first YES record 55 years ago. I was 13 at the time. Yes, I'm that old.
That Rickenbacker bass looks like a mandolin in his hands. It's no wonder he achieved such power and expression in his playing. This song demonstrates his compositional and execution genius as well as any YES song, arguably the pinnacle.
Did he possess the fusion-like improvisational capabilities of someone like Jaco? Perhaps not, but Jaco would have killed for Squire's power and authority on the bottom end of any band he ever played in. Few have ever possessed this command - Squire is among the deities.

Rick is just a classical performer then and now. Bill is an excellent percussionist and Jon's voice just adds to the all round sound of YES.

The complexity of it all, especially the earlier music, drew me in for life. Each musician in the band was amongst the very best at their instrument. There will only ever be one Chris. Thank God for the memories of dozens of awesome concerts and mind blowing studio albums. Glad the music will continue to live on.

I saw them in Edinburgh in the early 70’s twice. I remember 2 things vividly. The first concert was in a fairly small venue (The Empire Theatre) and when Chris played I felt I had been kicked in the stomach. I’ve only ever experienced that emotion once since (and I spent nearly 15 years doing lighting for bands all over the place) but the second time was in the Usher Hall. We were studying Photography at a local college and we blagged our way in to the sound check to take some pics. God only knows why to this day but they let us in. The band were obviously bemused by a couple of long haired clueless youngsters who were more stage struck than keen to take pictures but they were kindness personified - Chris in particular I remember. From then, I was hooked on Yes and have never stopped loving their music. The various splits etc throughout the years have been tragic but Chris’s death and then Alan Whites death felt like the end of an era.

The best of rock took place From the mid sixties to the 70's decade. The musicianship you had those days hasn't been surpassed.

@@bobbygriz5648 Neither Casady or Entwhistle played 'lead bass,' but both great musicians, Entwhistle, in particular, was a genius, and in many aspects, his 'wall of sound style', allowed Keith Moon to get away with being a showman, even playing the role of lead drummer, with his constant drum rolls stealing the limelight.
