  • Live at Montreux 2003 is a live album from the English progressive rock band Yes. It is a live recording of the group's headlining concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival on 14 July 2003. This is the first official album to feature the classic line-up of lead vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman, bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White since the 1996/1997 Keys to Ascension live albums, along with a DVD also entitled Keys to Ascension. The album was released on September 3, 2007, during a hiatus in the band's activity following a tour ending in 2004.
"The Fish" was Chris Squire's nickname. He earned it primarily due to his very long baths he would take, back when several members lived in the same flat and had to share the bathroom. Bill (Bruford) especially was not amused. He also happens to be a Pisces.
The subtitle for this song is "Schindleria Praematurus," which is an obscure, neotenic marine fish from the Pacific ocean. "Neotenic" means the adult fish exhibits no adult characteristics, only juvenile characteristics. The story is that Chris Squire had the melody and wanted to sing the name of a fish that had eight syllables, and dispatched a roadie (Maybe Michael Tait) to find one. The best he could find had nine, which is why the last syllable kind of trails off.
Squire's solo also incorporates much of the bass lines from the song "Tempus Fugit", which is a Latin phrase usually translated into English as "Time Flies".

What moves us through the silence of Chris Squire's passing is to know that he will live in our hearts always. What he leaves behind is not to die, but to live on in the minds and hearts of those who loved him. Chris, you made part of this life shared very special for both of us. R.I.P dear Chris ~ Bass Player Extraordinaire ღღღ
In the love of There, as in the love of Here, we will think of him still as the same ...

Chris was a wonderful musician but kind of a turd personally. I was in a band called Roots Of Consciousness that opened for them in Atlanta on....the Talk tour?
Jon brought us out around the stage with them before the show because they were going to do Purple Haze as an encore, and he couldn't remember the lyrics. His bright idea, which was incredibly fun for about 10 minutes, was for us to help him re-learn the lyrics.... until Mr. Squire came out and said, if I recall, "Get these twats out of here."
We got a smile and a wink from Jon and split. Still love you Chris.

This was probably the last time in their touring career they were at their best. Howe was simply a virtuoso, White hadn't started to decline yet, Squire was alive and at the top of his game, and Wakeman was awesome and with the band. I loved this group for 50 years. RIP Mr. Squire and Mr. White. You are missed.

      @MysticRhythmsLive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

You are so correct. *Nobody* sounded like Chris. His gift of creating melodies for such intensely complicated music is unsurpassed. Geddy was indeed inspired by Chris and you can hear much of Chris' soul in Geddy's playing. I expect that's what led Geddy to begin his career playing a Rickenbacker bass. Chris was the epitome of the phrase "Man on Bass."

MysticRhythmsLive He talks about it in the rig rundown he did with Premier Guitar. Some of Geddy’s playing on Cygnus X-1 Book 2, actually kind of reminds me of Chris. You can definitely hear Yes influences in Rush’s earlier material. I also remember hearing Geddy say that Yes is the only band that he waited in line for hours to see.

Chris split his signal output going to a bass amp and a guitar amp. Additionally, when Chris strikes a string with a pick his thumb follows it a split second later giving each stroke a slight chorus effect.

one of the greats, Chris Squire. I was fortunate enough to see YES back in the 70's
Chris with Steve Howe on the various guitars was one my favorite bass/ guitar duos.
    RIP Chris.

Have enjoyed Yessongs for 40+ years. Geniuses who played well together. I foresee many appreciating their magical sonic tapestries for generations to come. Wish I'd kept my MoFi "Close to the Edge". Thank you for posting this piece of history. I hope to listen to Chris, Jon, Steve, Rick, Bill, Alan, et al in the hereafter. Yes w/ orchestral accompaniment--doesn't get finer!

BIG FISH! Chris Squire will always be one of my favorite bass players. His style and sound made YES. I loved playing drums along with YES because of Chris Squire's bad ass bass playing!

how does one go about fretting so lightly on the guitar like Howe?? it amazes me how soft he is with his guitar

He isn't pressing the strings to the frets, he's playing harmonics.

The last time I Chris was at a small club in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This was during the Benoit David tour. Oliver Wakeman was on keys. I was in the 2nd row in front of Steve, so I had a great view. During this solo piece, Chris would get a sly look on his face, then play a note that rattled the hell out of the building. I thought the rafters would come down! Good times. Rest in peace Chris Squire...

__I sent a letter requesting an autograph to Chris Squire through Stone Ghost Productions about ten years ago. I had recently lucked out and obtained a signature Rickenbacker 'Chris Squire' 4001 bass guitar in one of but a very few left handed models. I was hoping that his publicist would send me one but to my surprise I received a very personal hand written and signed letter from Chris himself thanking me for my fan support over the years and asking me what I thought of the bass. He sounded like a regular, down to earth fellow. To my additional surprise I also received a 'used', signed guitar strap and a "Fish Out Of Water" CD with the case signed, "Best wishes to 'me', Chris Squire".
__Chris, I am still to this day awestruck by your kindness for taking the time to make a mere mortal like me feel like a million bucks. As if your music wasn't already enough of a gift. Thanks and I'll see ya when I see ya.....

This is such a fantastic story! I'm so glad you shared this...it's not often that I hear of things so personal and incredible. Chris really went out of his way for you, obviously a very dedicated fan. Kudos to you for obtaining the signature lefty Rick; I'm sure it's a beauty and has even more meaning to you now considering what Chris did. I assume you still have it? Thanks so much for commenting, it is very much appreciated! ~ Dan

Yes is my favorite band, and Chris, one of my favorite bass players and human beings, and his solo effort, an incredible work. But for god's sake, watching this video, with so many people involved in the making I can't help but wonder if that afternoon, by some rare miracle, Chris arrived on time at the studio, or kept dozens of people waiting for him.
Forever missed, Fish. You were a musician and a soul like no other. 🎸👏👏👏👏

Was a Yes fan since 1970...saw Yes play August 15,1972 @ The now defunct Spectrum in Philly, along with The Eagles and Jo Jo Gunne ...I am a guitarist, but was totally blown away by Chris Squire’s innovative Bass technique and stage presence.
I got to met him years later, what a great guy,..tall, genteel, unassuming, and genuinely appreciative of his fans.
    RIP Chris Squire.
