  • Metal Planer Restoration 47: Hand and Power Scraping the Dovetails on the Clapper Box Cross Slide of off my 1890's vintage New Haven Metal Planer. I show how to scrape both sides of the dovetail flat using the cross slide as a standard on one side and a straight edge on the other side. I also show how to measure the parallelism of the two dovetails using gauge pins and a micrometer.

    What you actually do, is that you show just how much work there is to take on a project like this. And there will always be moments that might not be the funniest in the world. Still, they are very important. So even though I also think there are a bit too much scraping now and then, it is actually what makes all the work realistic. And that, in turn, is the main reason why I watch every video you send out, Keith.

      Because it's nothing of the sort, and even if it was, Keith has covered the subject MANY times in the past.
      In thinking about what most influenced machine accuracy, I'd suggest you look at the influence of rolling-element bearings as opposed to poured babbit bearings.
      PS: I've been making chips for quite; the first lathe I could use in the early '60s was a flat-belt drive, with babbit bearings in the head stock. It was scraped on nearly all surfaces but If you wanted accuracy, it had nothing to do with the scraping on any of them, it had to do with *your* ability to predict the outcome of the cut depth, the RPM and feed-speed, the edge on cutting tool you ground and several other issues.
      My newest lathe has rolling element bearings on the head, and even if the ways are not scraped, it is far easier to find the dims I want with this one.

    With respect to the parallelism of the dovetails being measured across gauge pins, whilst the sides of the dovetail against which the pin bears have been scraped flat, does not the condition of the other bearing surface, the underside of the cross sllde, which I don't recall being so scraped, affect that measurement? Let me hasten to say, that I'm no engineer, but appreciate the obsession with precision, even when it seems to be unnecessary in a machine with large reciprocating masses and seemingly comparatively coarse results that will require further fettling. Thank you Keith for your informative and entertaining videos.

    • @richardhead8264
      @richardhead8264 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teresa, I have the same concerns. You are correct in suggesting that the surfaces adjacent to the angled dovetail will influence the measurements across the pins.
      To explain the phenomenon better, imagine that the adjacent surfaces contain hills and valleys. The hills will raise the pin, thereby causing it to touch the dovetail further outboard, resulting in a wider measurement.
      Conversely, if the pin rests in a valley of the adjacent surface, the pin will contact the dovetail surface lower down, and thereby be nestled further into the V-shaped crevice. This will result in the pin being further inboard, and hence yield a narrower measurement.

    • @mabmachine
      @mabmachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct both sides would impact the measurement across the pins. However the other surfaces were already scraped true. I think you underestimate the accuracy of this machine once its completed and operational. It will be able to hold a tolerance much better than any milling machine Keith will have access to.

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it matters. In the case of this video, the bottoms had already been scraped - it was done in a previous video and both sides were checked to make sure that they were co-planer to one another.

  • @teresagreene1821
    @teresagreene1821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello Richard, That's my impression, certainly, but perhaps Keith had already scraped that surface way back last year, in that frenzy of scraping eighteen months or so ago and I'd simply missed - or more likely - forgotten it ... Mind you the surface didn't appear to me to be that precisely finished - though as I said, I'm no sort of an engineer, but do enjoy his videos.

      @@MF175mp Also in Swedish: "Laxstjärt" wich means "Salmon-Tail". The Salmon-tail is more or less triangular, where most fish-tails are not, for most of them, if not precicely all, got a more concave trailing edge at the tail-fin. It is an unusual trait among fish, however more common among birds. I suppose one culd say Doves got a more or less triangular tail like Salmons.
      I understand completely why Germans calls it "Swallow-Tail" and not "Dove-Tail" or "Salmon-Tail". It is just a different way to see it, geometrically.
      Scribe an unvisible line between the points of a Swallow-tail, now you got a triangle, thus Swallow-tail. Actually The German word might be more striking in this case, since the material more accurately resembles the real ting.
      However, Dove-Tails or "Lax-Stjärtar" in the woodcraft, includes shapes that physically resembles the tail of a Salmon, or a Dove, mirrored in the material, quite accurately.
      These shapes are more or less the same, triangels.

    If you - like (Thomas) me - wonder why the measurement with the gauge pins is sufficient for proper spacing of the angled dovetails - go back to Keith's "Metal Planer Restoration 42" video where he scrapes the horizontal surface parallel to the crossslide. This ensures that the gauge pin method always references on the same horizontal level and the dovetails indeed get parallel - at least that's how I understand it, but i am just an EE :)

    No such thing as too many scraper videos, in my humble opinion.

    For some reason Keith, after watching the first few passes I get the vision of Richard King walking up behind you going Cluck Cluck Cluck! But I know you are removing material, however it did not look like it on camera. Anyway it looks good and should work great! getting closer to commissioning day! That should be fun. Cheers

    Question Keith: Can you please show the gibb scrapping? I am not sure how you would make both sides parallel since I am not sure how you would do it. Thanks,
