- Dental plaque composition and formation:
Dental plaque is a sticky biofilm of microorganisms encased in an extracellular matrix that develops on surfaces within the oral cavity, including both removable and fixed restorations. It typically appears white to yellowish and has a three-dimensional or globular appearance.
Plaque is categorized into two main types: the supragingival and subgingival plaque. Supragingival plaque forms above the gingival margin, while subgingival plaque occurs below it. Subgingival plaque can adhere to the tooth surface, the sulcular epithelium, or reside within the sulcular space. Plaque in direct contact with the gingival margin is known as marginal plaque.
