Matt Damon said that he took his kids to the park bench. He told them that a great man talked to him on that bench and changed his life forever. That scene was much more than a movie scene and Robin Williams made it special.
Blue when Robin Williams passed away that bench in Boston Public Garden became a huge memorial and to this day is still a popular spot for photos. When Robin and Matt were doing the scene on the bench, the garden appears relatively empty, when in fact when word got out they were filming more than 2000 people showed up making filming quite difficult. What I find most astonishing Blue is that Matt and Ben won the Best original screenplay Oscar for this script and they weren't much older than you are now when they wrote this
A not so known tidbit about the Oscar winning script. This movie likely would have never happened if it weren't for Kevin Smith. While filming Dogma with Ben & Matt, they came up to him with their script. He was like "no way, ya'll wrote a script" but he read it. He stayed up all night reading it. He was blown away by it. He asked if he could show the copy of it and ended up leaving it on the desk of someone at Miramax who would read it. And the rest is history. Sure, maybe they could've gotten this movie made without him. But it's highly doubtful. 2 relatively unknown actors, doing films with "Indie Filmmakers" like Kevin Smith and Richard Linklater, they weren't going anywhere as screenwriters. And maybe they would've graduated the indie films circuit as actors and could FINALLY get their script out there. But the timing would've been all screwed up. You couldn't guarantee that Skarsgard & Williams would be involved. So yeah, I feel like Kevin deserves a credit in this film somehow. He helped spawn the synergy around this that ended up becoming Oscar gold.

RIP Robin Williams. His death hit me really hard. He's been a staple in my family for as long as I've lived, and even before I existed because my father loved him so much. There has never been a mixture of sharpness, wit, and quickness in comedy like him. And he just so happened to be one of the best dramatic actors to come out of comedy. Dead Poets Society is an absolute must. Good Morning Vietnam, Awakenings, What Dreams May Come, Bicentennial Man, Insomnia, The Fisher King, and August Rush are all great dramatic performances. The comedies are too many to list, but Mrs Doubtfire, Hook, Jack, Jumanji, and Aladdin are standouts.
RIP Robin Williams. This was his defining performance. Matt Damon was fantastic in this. It’s funny to see a not so famous yet Casey Affleck in this film. Great choice!

18:20 Fun fact: you can see the edges of the frame shake, on every camera angle in this scene. This is because the story was ad-libed by Williams, and he got EVERYONE on set laughing as hard as they could, and the shaking are because the cameramen are laughing.

The scene when Will cries on Robin's shoulder is heart wrenching not only because of the pain he held for so long, but because to me it's kind of symbolic of how heartbreaking Robin's death meant to so many people and wishing we could hug him just the same. That to me is how I feel every time whenever I watch this scene.
Fun fact, Robin Williams attended the Juilliard school in NYC, a famous music/drama/acting college, before going on to find success as a comedian. Everyone thinks he is a comedian who can do great drama, but he actually started in drama.

The "I swallowed a bug" line at 7:30 was an inside joke and a callout to Marlon Brando's outtakes from Apocalypse Now. Casey Affleck improvised that line and you can see how Matt Damon started to crack up, but quickly got it together. It's a lot of fun to re-watch as it's ALMOST a blooper, but they kept it in. "Ahhh, that's the good stuff."
The beautiful thing about this film is there's no real bad guy, no villain. If anyone it might've been the professor but I believe he genuinely had the best intentions for Will. Great performances and an Oscar winning screenplay from a couple guys in their mid-twenties. Remarkable.
Will's "Why SHOULDN'T I work for the NSA?" monologue is one of my all-time favorites. Some incredible writing in this film. FUN FACT: The original concept for this was an action movie, with Will being on the run from the NSA for half the movie after they decide he's a liability because of his code breaking abilities. I know that sounds like a joke but it's true, and after having lived with this version for twenty-five years I can't even imagine what it would've looked like.
I loved it when they asked Matt Damon which Oscar was the biggest deal for this movie, best screenplay, or best actor. He said the biggest deal was getting to come to the award show itself, just to see it live. To him and Ben Afleck, that was their super bowl.
Robin Williams does portray the perfect psychiatrist. Too often it's not like this I think. I was struggling with my mental health in university and went to the uni counsellor when I was starting to feel a little suicidal. I was shy and didn't want to open up but felt desperate, but the counsellor did nothing to help open me up. First meet I said some stuff about what was bothering me, then at second meeting, first thing I said was, "I don't really have anything to say today.", which was me actually saying, "help me, I can't get it out myself" but she just immediately got up from her seat, said, "well if you do want to talk then just call and arrange a meeting" and walked out the room. I couldn't believe it. I've never tried to get mental health support since and have spent 20 years trying to sort it out myself, with slow success. But bad mental health support can be very damaging for long term growth. Every psychology student should watch this film.
Written by Damon and Affleck in their early 20's, except the "farts in bed" scene, that was ad libbed by Robin Williams, that's why Damon's reaction is so genuine.
Robin Williams won the best supporting actor Oscar for this and it was by far his best performance in a most illustrious career, may he rest in peace. His death still resonates with me!!
Something I realized not long ago about the bar scene where Chuckie is trying to pick up Skylar: he was probably working up to a wordplay line with "class" and "history". If he hadn't been interrupted it might have gone something like this, "Even if we didn't have class together, you've got enough class for the both of us. And I really wish we did have history, 'cause then we'd both be ready to get out of here and do something a little better with our time."
When we first see Sean he is talking to his class about the importance of "trust." He said there was really no point for them being in therapy without it. Sean also talks to the professor about Wills defense mechanism that involves lashing out at others. In the movie we see a lot of that. The most visible was Skyler when he tells her he doesn't love her and then walks out. She falls over as if she was punched in the stomach. That was Wills form of attacking her before she got too close. With the professor the way to hurt him was to burn work he didn't understand and was valuable to him. With Sean, Will almost attacks him when Sean is telling him its not his fault. Will balls up a fist as if to strike Sean, but can't. Sean did that because he learned from Will he was repeating the cycle when he told him he broke up with Skyler. That's why that whole "its not your fault" moment happened. His defense mechanism also involves lying. He lies about having brothers and he lies to Sean about wanting to be a shepherd, but Sean was having none of that after all the time he invested in Will. That's why he kicked him out. Its sad that Will perceived his therapy of having no value. In the end its what changed his life. I believe this movie was somehow reworked from an earlier movie titled The Prince of Tides. Its also a therapy movie. I know Michelle from the homies will like it a lot because she likes this era of movies. An interesting thing happened in this movie. Robin Williams talked about when he was a young comedian and went to a club. He saw a "big" guy picking on a "little" guy. Robin said it was all fun and games until the little guy had enough and grabbed the big guy by the neck and told him "If you do that again, I'll end you. I will end you." Robin said everyone in the club got quiet after that happened. If you look Matt Damon's eyes the moment it happens in the movie they are quite surprised. The second shot of his face his eyes are back to normal because they probably had a cut right after it happened and then resumed with a close up and cameras being rearranged for lines. Its an interesting part of this movie. Blue, you take care.
When I was growing up, Robin Williams was one of my heroes. His comedic abilities as well as his deep emotional range in drama. Sean Maguire was one of Robin's greatest roles, and it was the one that finally gave him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other great roles...Adrian Cronauer in 'Good Morning, Vietnam', John Keating in 'Dead Poets Society', the title role in 'Patch Adams', Peter Banning aka Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg's 'Hook', Daniel Hilliard aka 'Mrs. Doubtfire', Armand Goldman in 'The Birdcage', and the voice of The Genie in Disney's 'Aladdin'. His ability to improvise was in this film in subtle ways...in the scene where he said "My wife used to fart." Some of the moments were improvised and the laughter from Matt was real. In fact, watch it again, and you can see the camera shaking a little bit...the operator was laughing, too. Also, his last line at the end of the movie..."Son of a b****. He stole my line." was improvised.
Trixy, by FAR, my favorite reaction to this movie on YT. You got it so right thoughout. So many reactors don't seem to understand will's behavior or the dynamics with Skylar. I still think the "it's not your fault" scene is only the beginning of a long process, but it is just a movie. Loved your reaction!
Great reaction to a classic. Such an amazingly mature script for two such young men to write. As said, Damon/Affleck won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Robin Williams won for Best Supporting Actor. The bench scene alone is often considered one of the best monologues in movie history. A couple of other of the many stellar Robin Williams performances that might make a good reaction video: Dead Poets Society (1989) Peter Weir. Good Morning Vietnam (1988) Barry Levinson.
I had an alarmingly very similar upbringing to Will. I grew up in and around Boston too. Foster care, Abusive parents, foster parents, etc. Sean, in this movie, was the therapist I never got to have. Mine were good, decent folk and extremely helpful. But the connection he had, being from the same place as me, having similar experiences... it was that empathy of knowing that I was missing out on. I didn't start to find my way until I was an adult and met people in some of the same situations as me. To this day though, this movie just hits so damn hard. Especially the therapy scenes. Whenever I watch them, it's like I finally was getting the therapy I had wished I had. It's always so cathartic to let it go when Robin's voice says "It's not your fault."
This is an outstanding and most exemplary film that identifies and recognises the complexities and dramas we all face in some way or fashion. I love the relationship and rapport Will develops with Sean in this story it's a message we can all learn and to discover about the healing power of love and empathy. Trixy you are such an inspiring individual , you possess certain characteristics and attributes that is so endearing and loveable, I appreciate your insights and perspectives here. Thank you for being you and for creating your channel so even though from a distance people like myself have the priceless gift to discover you I am grateful for this, Thank you! Best reaction to the movie I've seen in a long while. Very perceptive commentary and your knowledge of psychology is a great bonus to understanding Will's mentality, and the parallels with Sean's life too. The park bench monologue and the "it's not your fault" scene is some of the best-written and -acted cinema ever. Robin Williams knocks it out of the park. RIP Robin, you are sorely missed.
What a beautiful reaction to a beautiful movie. You are very socially and emotionally adept, I can tell. You understood the story, what Will was going through and how Sean helped him. I relate a lot to Will in his issues so this movie hits different. Loved your understanding and empathy throughout, especially in the end with the look in your eyes that the movie hit you as much as many of us.

This is my all-time favorite movie, a lot because I feel like I can relate to Will a lot. I'll watched this movie a hundred times, but while watching your reaction I realized what I've really craved in my life is to have those people around me like the one's Will had that helped him grow, for me I had to do all/most of it alone and now after a long road of pain, suffering and growth without that motivation, advice and support from others, I think I am finally almost to the place that Will is at at the end of the movie. I hope I can get there soon. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie a lot, we all need a person like Robin, but we should all try to be a person like Robin for the people in our lives too.
I needed this reaction. The last 2 reactions I saw of this movie with girls reacting to it was just so damn annoying. In the climatic "it's not your fault" scene they were just blabbing all over the scene not even caring about what was going on. Made me feel like "yes, women absolutely do NOT care to see men open up & get emotional". They say they want us to open up to them but when we share our traumas & cry it's like they become disgusted with us. It didn't even register with me until just now watching your reaction why they were so cold & uncaring about that Oscar winning scene. But you were caught up in it. You understood the gravity of the situation & what it meant. Can't believe I'm gonna put this out on the internet...but I wish I could find someone as understanding as you. I wish we were friends & I could finally open up to someone in person about my traumas & why I tend to self-sabotage everything in my life because of the mental abuse of my mother. And I know...."I should go to a therapist". But I don't because I don't need a therapist. Someone I pay money to so I can process my trauma & they give me some clinical bullshit responses. I've processed it, I know the reasons why I've been a screwup. Hell, even my generalization of women earlier in this comment is rooted in my traumas. I need a friend I can trust who won't judge me...a shoulder to cry on, someone to believe in me & push me to realize my dreams.
A part of the inspiration for this movie was the discovery of the man with the highest I.Q. in the US. It was discovered that he worked as a janitor at an aerospace company. In Robin Williams ( the therapist) there are references to his past movies. Almost as an acknowledgement to the actors body of work. Clearly the director was a fan of Robin Williams. Such a loss that he took his own life!!!
I'm a newer viewer... I rented this movie on VHS over 20 years ago.... So good... It launched Damon and Affleck to where they are today... PS, Robin Williams was so spectacular.. You were once again spot on....Love your content, take care young lady.
18:15 All of the jokes here were completely ad-libbed, and everyone onset broke, you can even see the camera bobbing up and down because the camera-guy was laughing so bad. Robin William had a long history of ad-libbing comedic gold.
In low-income places in America I feel that physicality and violence are prided over any other potential. No one cared if you were academically inclined. They did care if you knew how to throw a punch or win a fight or got arrested. For this you earned credit, you were validated socially. This ensured most of us knew our place and never sought out the things privileged kids were handed on a silver platter whether they earned it or not. Another good film that explored this is called "School Ties" and has several actors from "Good Will Hunting" in it as it was still early in their careers.
Good Will Hunting is such a good script and psychology, especially for 1997 (script as prob written way earlier than that even). Add to it Robin William acting it out and adding some improv and you get gold And I've watched like 10 reactions to this movie, and it never gets old either
Lotta Fun Facts today: Will's friends show such a close relationship on set, and are able to riff together so flawlessly, because in reality, they had been doing it all their lives: the actors are actually brothers, Ben and Casey Afflek. Oh, I'm sure someone mentions this tidbit, but in case they don't, the movie was written by Matt Damon and Ben Afflek.

This is by far one of my favorite Robin Williams movies besides Dead Poet's Society. It always hit me hard but especially so after years of narcissistic abuse at the hands of my mother. Thankfully, I made it out and the more time passes without contact, the better I am for it. I am so glad you enjoyed this film, as it was an outstanding work of art.
The whole story of his wife farting... Robin Williams improv'd it completely, on the spot. Such a quiet, sad, hopeful genius. I was honored and lucky enough to meet him once and briefly talk with him. Rest in peace, Robin. For another wonderful job of acting, try The Fisher King. Robin shines in it too.
BTW, the idea of a math genius like this, there was a college student who came to class late after the professor put a problem on the board. The student copied it down, not knowing it wasn't an assignment, a week or two later he goes to the professor and apologizes for the lateness of the assignment, that it took longer to solve than he thought it would. The professor, knowing he hadn't given an assignment, thought the kid was pranking him, and just dropped it on his desk and ignored it... for several weeks. When he finally looked at it, he found the kid had solved a millennium problem that he had put on the board as an example of how long it could take for math to progress to be solved, and this kid, not knowing how nearly impossible the problem was, had solved it. OK, the reason that brilliant people (those with extreme memory) tend to be emotionally broken is you remember everything. The example here is the bully from kindergarten. He still remembers exactly how bad it felt and that's been brewing for years. multiply that by every insult never forgotten, every pain, every heartbreak. This movie hits it spot on. Also they tend to be neurodivergent. The daughter of an internet friend is like this, she's 16 now, and about to get her first degree. Took the SAT at 9, etc. I'm brilliant, genius at times, on the IQ charts, but this girl makes me look like an idiot. And she's Polymathic genius at that, which makes me feel even dumber. 😳 Finally, I miss Robin Williams.
I have to admit I was kinda excited for you to see the therapy with such a volatile and defensive person as Will. Sean was indeed the perfect therapist for him. I don't think many objectively good therapists could have gotten through to him past his bullshit, but sure as shit, Sean did.
Man you called this movie by the numbers. You were pretty much predicting it scene by scene. The thing is, the painting really was a Winston Homer homage. That was some good work from set!
Growing up in a similar situation and having those lie to you to try and manipulate you all in the name of "potential" when half of what's on your mind is just survival, I'm 100% for Robin Williams' side of things. Yeah, Will is smart. Smarter than most. But he doesn't owe the world anything. It's more than good enough to take what you have and use it to make yourself happy, and not everyone else. Yes, people are envious, but because that's what they care about and they don't have it. That's the problem with fixer upper relationships. Ultimately, whatever they do to better themselves doesn't always stick because they're doing what they're doing out of appeasement, not self improvement. Yes, people have the ability to positively affect each other, even have a big enough impact to cause real change. But at the end of the day, you gotta do it for you. There are also a bunch of social and economic problems that are at play, even in Will's hypothetical situation. But that's a whole sub topic as to how we poorly utilize our "gifted" minds in the world, as a whole.
This film could have gone so wrong... in so many ways.... but everything fell into place. Ideal director. Best cast possible. Best outcome. Perfect showcase for the talents of everyone involved. (I still have a hard crush on Minnie Driver ....or at least her character in this movie) All the awards & career bumps for everyone involved Are well deserved. Its 'film-classic' status is well earned.
It's probably obvious but my favorite display of progress of Robbins character almost becoming the real father figure Will needed by calling him sport and childish nicknames then at the end he calls him son. Im a 40 year old man and still tear up at the end when I watch this. We all have issues and not all of us have the opportunity to get fixed.
The best part about this movie is there are ZERO bad guys. Even Prof Lambeau just wanted the "best" for Will, he just had his priorities on what is best skewed.
Without Kevin Smith becoming a producer on the film Good Will Hunting, no studio wanted either Matt Damon nor Ben Affleck in the lead roles. Even though they had both written the screenplay, the studios considered them to be unknowns. Kevin Smith, thankfully, convinced them otherwise. "Where are the parents?" haha He's 20 years old. As far as most parents in this country are concerned by that point you're on your own. You've been a grown adult for 2 years and in college, you can handle it. This is obviously before knowing Will's fully story so she wouldn't know that the parents aren't in the picture at all. Some people are lucky and get some help well into their 20's (even more so today) but a lot of the time the kids move out and want to make it on their own anyhow.
people in his 20s are still a child in brain development about values and understanding of society hierarchy aand all that shit. Emotionaly too. Just because a guy or a girl in his 20s have his body developed cant mean you are mature on a deep surface.

With a lot of families once you got to a certain age (18 normally) you are expected to go out into the world and figure it out for yourself. Some can do it and some can not. I know when I was 18 I was expected to know what I was supposed to do with the rest of my life and have a plan.
The scene where Robin Williams was talking about how his wife woke herself up by farting was all made up on the spot by Robin. No one knew what was happening and Matt broke out laughing. That's right. Matt's laugh was real and so good they kept the scene in the movie
to me it has always made sense that no one in the class tried to steal the credit for solving it. it’s impossible for most of them and they know they can’t just bullshit their way through lol they’d have to prove their skills again and again in front of other people and usually math nerds know not to look like they know something when they actually do not. they actually NEED and WANT to understand something to solve it 🤷🏻♀️ that’s how i’ve always thought about it.

Such a great movie. The scene where Robin Williams was talking about his wife farting was improvised. Matt Damon laughing at it was real because it was unexpected.
The scene when Will cries on Robin's shoulder is heart wrenching not only because of the pain he held for so long, but because to me it's kind of symbolic of how heartbreaking Robin's death meant to so many people and wishing we could hug him just the same. That to me is how I feel every time whenever I watch this scene.

The "I swallowed a bug" line at 7:30 was an inside joke and a callout to Marlon Brando's outtakes from Apocalypse Now. Casey Affleck improvised that line and you can see how Matt Damon started to crack up, but quickly got it together. It's a lot of fun to re-watch as it's ALMOST a blooper, but they kept it in.

The beautiful thing about this film is there's no real bad guy, no villain. If anyone it might've been the professor but I believe he genuinely had the best intentions for Will. Great performances and an Oscar winning screenplay from a couple guys in their mid-twenties. Remarkable.

FUN FACT: The original concept for this was an action movie, with Will being on the run from the NSA for half the movie after they decide he's a liability because of his code breaking abilities. I know that sounds like a joke but it's true, and after having lived with this version for twenty-five years I can't even imagine what it would've looked like.

I loved it when they asked Matt Damon which Oscar was the biggest deal for this movie, best screenplay, or best actor. He said the biggest deal was getting to come to the award show itself, just to see it live. To him and Ben Afleck, that was their super bowl.

Robin Williams does portray the perfect psychiatrist. Too often it's not like this I think. I was struggling with my mental health in university and went to the uni counsellor when I was starting to feel a little suicidal. I was shy and didn't want to open up but felt desperate, but the counsellor did nothing to help open me up. First meet I said some stuff about what was bothering me, then at second meeting, first thing I said was, "I don't really have anything to say today.", which was me actually saying, "help me, I can't get it out myself" but she just immediately got up from her seat, said, "well if you do want to talk then just call and arrange a meeting" and walked out the room. I couldn't believe it. I've never tried to get mental health support since and have spent 20 years trying to sort it out myself, with slow success. But bad mental health support can be very damaging for long term growth. Every psychology student should watch this film.
Robin did some great serious roles. I thought he was good in Dead Poets Society, but fantastic in, Awakenings.
I'm old so I remember him from Mork and Mindy.

Something I realized not long ago about the bar scene where Chuckie is trying to pick up Skylar: he was probably working up to a wordplay line with "class" and "history". If he hadn't been interrupted it might have gone something like this, "Even if we didn't have class together, you've got enough class for the both of us. And I really wish we did have history, 'cause then we'd both be ready to get out of here and do something a little better with our time."

When we first see Sean he is talking to his class about the importance of "trust." He said there was really no point for them being in therapy without it. Sean also talks to the professor about Wills defense mechanism that involves lashing out at others. In the movie we see a lot of that. The most visible was Skyler when he tells her he doesn't love her and then walks out. She falls over as if she was punched in the stomach. That was Wills form of attacking her before she got too close. With the professor the way to hurt him was to burn work he didn't understand and was valuable to him. With Sean, Will almost attacks him when Sean is telling him its not his fault. Will balls up a fist as if to strike Sean, but can't. Sean did that because he learned from Will he was repeating the cycle when he told him he broke up with Skyler. That's why that whole "its not your fault" moment happened. His defense mechanism also involves lying. He lies about having brothers and he lies to Sean about wanting to be a shepherd, but Sean was having none of that after all the time he invested in Will. That's why he kicked him out. Its sad that Will perceived his therapy of having no value. In the end its what changed his life. I believe this movie was somehow reworked from an earlier movie titled The Prince of Tides. Its also a therapy movie. I know Michelle from the homies will like it a lot because she likes this era of movies. An interesting thing happened in this movie. Robin Williams talked about when he was a young comedian and went to a club. He saw a "big" guy picking on a "little" guy. Robin said it was all fun and games until the little guy had enough and grabbed the big guy by the neck and told him "If you do that again, I'll end you. I will end you." Robin said everyone in the club got quiet after that happened. If you look Matt Damon's eyes the moment it happens in the movie they are quite surprised. The second shot of his face his eyes are back to normal because they probably had a cut right after it happened and then resumed with a close up and cameras being rearranged for lines. Its an interesting part of this movie. Blue, you take care.

When I was growing up, Robin Williams was one of my heroes. His comedic abilities as well as his deep emotional range in drama. Sean Maguire was one of Robin's greatest roles, and it was the one that finally gave him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other great roles...Adrian Cronauer in 'Good Morning, Vietnam', John Keating in 'Dead Poets Society', the title role in 'Patch Adams', Peter Banning aka Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg's 'Hook', Daniel Hilliard aka 'Mrs. Doubtfire', Armand Goldman in 'The Birdcage', and the voice of The Genie in Disney's 'Aladdin'.
His ability to improvise was in this film in subtle ways...in the scene where he said "My wife used to fart." Some of the moments were improvised and the laughter from Matt was real. In fact, watch it again, and you can see the camera shaking a little bit...the operator was laughing, too. Also, his last line at the end of the movie..."Son of a b****. He stole my line." was improvised.

Great reaction to a classic. Such an amazingly mature script for two such young men to write. As said, Damon/Affleck won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Robin Williams won for Best Supporting Actor. The bench scene alone is often considered one of the best monologues in movie history.

The park bench soliloquy is one of the greatest moments in cinema.
I had an alarmingly very similar upbringing to Will. I grew up in and around Boston too. Foster care, Abusive parents, foster parents, etc. Sean, in this movie, was the therapist I never got to have. Mine were good, decent folk and extremely helpful.
But the connection he had, being from the same place as me, having similar experiences... it was that empathy of knowing that I was missing out on. I didn't start to find my way until I was an adult and met people in some of the same situations as me. To this day though, this movie just hits so damn hard. Especially the therapy scenes. Whenever I watch them, it's like I finally was getting the therapy I had wished I had. It's always so cathartic to let it go when Robin's voice says "It's not your fault."
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote and starred. They're from South Boston Massachusetts, that's the accent with the full lungs.
Fun fact: Robin Williams ad-libbed the whole fart monologue which left Matt Damon genuinely laughing. Their performances were outstanding!

Best reaction to the movie I've seen in a long while. Very perceptive commentary and your knowledge of psychology is a great bonus to understanding Will's mentality, and the parallels with Sean's life too. The park bench monologue and the "it's not your fault" scene is some of the best-written and -acted cinema ever. Robin Williams knocks it out of the park. RIP Robin, you are sorely missed.

This is my all-time favorite movie, a lot because I feel like I can relate to Will a lot. I'll watched this movie a hundred times, but while watching your reaction I realized what I've really craved in my life is to have those people around me like the one's Will had that helped him grow, for me I had to do all/most of it alone and now after a long road of pain, suffering and growth without that motivation, advice and support from others, I think I am finally almost to the place that Will is at at the end of the movie. I hope I can get there soon. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie a lot, we all need a person like Robin, but we should all try to be a person like Robin for the people in our lives too.

I needed this reaction. The last 2 reactions I saw of this movie with girls reacting to it was just so damn annoying. In the climatic "it's not your fault" scene they were just blabbing all over the scene not even caring about what was going on. Made me feel like "yes, women absolutely do NOT care to see men open up & get emotional". They say they want us to open up to them but when we share our traumas & cry it's like they become disgusted with us. It didn't even register with me until just now watching your reaction why they were so cold & uncaring about that Oscar winning scene.
But you were caught up in it. You understood the gravity of the situation & what it meant. Can't believe I'm gonna put this out on the internet...but I wish I could find someone as understanding as you. I wish we were friends & I could finally open up to someone in person about my traumas & why I tend to self-sabotage everything in my life because of the mental abuse of my mother.
And I know...."I should go to a therapist". But I don't because I don't need a therapist. Someone I pay money to so I can process my trauma & they give me some clinical bullshit responses. I've processed it, I know the reasons why I've been a screwup. Hell, even my generalization of women earlier in this comment is rooted in my traumas.
I need a friend I can trust who won't judge me...a shoulder to cry on, someone to believe in me & push me to realize my dreams.

A part of the inspiration for this movie was the discovery of the man with the highest I.Q. in the US. It was discovered that he worked as a janitor at an aerospace company.
In Robin Williams ( the therapist) there are references to his past movies. Almost as an acknowledgement to the actors body of work. Clearly the director was a fan of Robin Williams. Such a loss that he took his own life!!!

I'm a newer viewer... I rented this movie on VHS over 20 years ago.... So good... It launched Damon and Affleck to where they are today... PS, Robin Williams was so spectacular.. You were once again spot on....Love your content, take care young lady.
18:15 All of the jokes here were completely ad-libbed, and everyone onset broke, you can even see the camera bobbing up and down because the camera-guy was laughing so bad. Robin William had a long history of ad-libbing comedic gold.
In low-income places in America I feel that physicality and violence are prided over any other potential. No one cared if you were academically inclined. They did care if you knew how to throw a punch or win a fight or got arrested. For this you earned credit, you were validated socially. This ensured most of us knew our place and never sought out the things privileged kids were handed on a silver platter whether they earned it or not.
Another good film that explored this is called "School Ties" and has several actors from "Good Will Hunting" in it as it was still early in their careers.
I have driven that road. In October it is one of the most beautiful roads in America.
Good Will Hunting is such a good script and psychology, especially for 1997 (script as prob written way earlier than that even). Add to it Robin William acting it out and adding some improv and you get gold

This is by far one of my favorite Robin Williams movies besides Dead Poet's Society. It always hit me hard but especially so after years of narcissistic abuse at the hands of my mother. Thankfully, I made it out and the more time passes without contact, the better I am for it. I am so glad you enjoyed this film, as it was an outstanding work of art.

An all time classic. And likely one of Robin Williams best roles if not his best. He did win the Oscar for best supporting actor for this role
BTW, the idea of a math genius like this, there was a college student who came to class late after the professor put a problem on the board. The student copied it down, not knowing it wasn't an assignment, a week or two later he goes to the professor and apologizes for the lateness of the assignment, that it took longer to solve than he thought it would. The professor, knowing he hadn't given an assignment, thought the kid was pranking him, and just dropped it on his desk and ignored it... for several weeks. When he finally looked at it, he found the kid had solved a millennium problem that he had put on the board as an example of how long it could take for math to progress to be solved, and this kid, not knowing how nearly impossible the problem was, had solved it.
OK, the reason that brilliant people (those with extreme memory) tend to be emotionally broken is you remember everything. The example here is the bully from kindergarten. He still remembers exactly how bad it felt and that's been brewing for years. multiply that by every insult never forgotten, every pain, every heartbreak. This movie hits it spot on. Also they tend to be neurodivergent.
The daughter of an internet friend is like this, she's 16 now, and about to get her first degree. Took the SAT at 9, etc. I'm brilliant, genius at times, on the IQ charts, but this girl makes me look like an idiot. And she's Polymathic genius at that, which makes me feel even dumber. 😳

I have to admit I was kinda excited for you to see the therapy with such a volatile and defensive person as Will. Sean was indeed the perfect therapist for him. I don't think many objectively good therapists could have gotten through to him past his bullshit, but sure as shit, Sean did.

Growing up in a similar situation and having those lie to you to try and manipulate you all in the name of "potential" when half of what's on your mind is just survival, I'm 100% for Robin Williams' side of things.
Yeah, Will is smart. Smarter than most. But he doesn't owe the world anything. It's more than good enough to take what you have and use it to make yourself happy, and not everyone else. Yes, people are envious, but because that's what they care about and they don't have it.
That's the problem with fixer upper relationships. Ultimately, whatever they do to better themselves doesn't always stick because they're doing what they're doing out of appeasement, not self improvement. Yes, people have the ability to positively affect each other, even have a big enough impact to cause real change. But at the end of the day, you gotta do it for you.
There are also a bunch of social and economic problems that are at play, even in Will's hypothetical situation. But that's a whole sub topic as to how we poorly utilize our "gifted" minds in the world, as a whole.
This film could have gone so wrong... in so many ways.... but everything fell into place. Ideal director. Best cast possible. Best outcome. Perfect showcase for the talents of everyone involved. (I still have a hard crush on Minnie Driver ....or at least her character in this movie) All the awards & career bumps for everyone involved Are well deserved. Its 'film-classic' status is well earned.
It's probably obvious but my favorite display of progress of Robbins character almost becoming the real father figure Will needed by calling him sport and childish nicknames then at the end he calls him son. Im a 40 year old man and still tear up at the end when I watch this. We all have issues and not all of us have the opportunity to get fixed.
The best part about this movie is there are ZERO bad guys. Even Prof Lambeau just wanted the "best" for Will, he just had his priorities on what is best skewed.

"Where are the parents?" haha He's 20 years old. As far as most parents in this country are concerned by that point you're on your own. You've been a grown adult for 2 years and in college, you can handle it. This is obviously before knowing Will's fully story so she wouldn't know that the parents aren't in the picture at all. Some people are lucky and get some help well into their 20's (even more so today) but a lot of the time the kids move out and want to make it on their own anyhow.
people in his 20s are still a child in brain development about values and understanding of society hierarchy aand all that shit. Emotionaly too.
Just because a guy or a girl in his 20s have his body developed cant mean you are mature on a deep surface.

With a lot of families once you got to a certain age (18 normally) you are expected to go out into the world and figure it out for yourself. Some can do it and some can not. I know when I was 18 I was expected to know what I was supposed to do with the rest of my life and have a plan.
The scene where Robin Williams was talking about how his wife woke herself up by farting was all made up on the spot by Robin. No one knew what was happening and Matt broke out laughing. That's right. Matt's laugh was real and so good they kept the scene in the movie
