The way his character talks in that movie is a pretty important detail.
It's an important fucking detail, fucking agreed. 👌 pure fucking Boston eh.
@@eduarDOGames560 every fucken detail of this fucken movie was fucken amazing
He's right. Bostonian's wouldn't notice
I agree. Boston, NYC, DC, Philly it's just communication. You then go to the midwest and you're confused why everyone is looking at you funny. Oddly enough, people who swear more are thought to be more honest and intelligent
@@iwatchkittenvids45 not sure about that but swearing is part of everyday language especially the word Fuck cause it has so many different meanings
I find it funny that people think this style of speech is true more for just one area. It's really a matter of family social status within recent history.
My mom and dad divorced 34 years ago. My dad's side comes from upper middle class. Very rarely do I hear any of them say shit or fuck, and never bitch.
My moms side... history of being lower middle class, dipping into poverty.
I work in a steel plant, and the only people that don't use fuck as a placeholder are the office staff. Everyone above the plant manager.
And my dad's side is from Chicago, moms side is from a rural community.
Also, my boss at my last job was from Boston. Had the accent bad, but never heard fuck come out of his mouth.
The way they talked out the lines then transcribed them explains why the dialog sounds so natural in this movie.
I expected it to be a "You can't say the F word more than once, and we were like 'F***, that ain't gonna happen' and so we added another hundred f***s. Just to make a point."
This describes the story of how bigger longer and uncut turned into what it is for our viewing pleasure😅 true story
@@mrspicolli Times have changed, our kids are getting worse. They won't obey their parents they just want to fart and curse!

I’m so glad he didn’t oblige. It’s way more authentic this way and it FEELS authentic too
As a Bostonian, I can wholeheartedly say that's exactly how we are. I swear so much, especially in public, that I'm surprised no one's ever told me I need to calm down.
I'm not from Boston but we're the same here in southern MN. When my kids get sassy my standard response is "yeah well I fucked your mom."
I'm from Boston. Grew up in Dorchester and Southie. You can't have a movie like that without the language. It's everywhere. That's how we talk, especially in the ghetto.
Also every male Southie's name ends in a y , ain't that fu.king right Richy 🤭
@@richardcurtis2688 I'm glad you have a sense of humor, I know sometimes my wife from Boston just gives me that certain look that means she doesn't appreciate my attempt at humor 😉
@@Sunmoon-gj9gy You have to have a sense of humor growing up white in the ghetto. I got a lot of crap lol.
Hands down, one of the best movies ever made.
It is still a great watch and a joy to the ears from all the cast.
I agree. It was destined to be, considering it starred 3 of the greatest talents (& all-around good, decent people).- Robin Williams, Matt Damon & Minnie Driver!
Did you gorget Ben Affleck?he is a great Director,Actor & Producer!🍀💯%@@kaystevens8428
Honestly thankful they didn't change it. People cuss. The cussing through out this movie makes his character and his friend super relatable. I talk shit to my buddies all the time. And if we aren't cussing then it's a serious talk. It's just a relatable character trait and I think they really did an amazing job at conveying that. This movies an absolute classic. I'm so glad they didn't alter any of it.
I mean, 148 times in 3 hours is a bit much.
If you curse that often, there...may be a need to reevaluate why that is.
@@ZT1STjust because you were raised in a culture that speaks a particular way doesn't mean that the people who were raised in a different culture have moral failings. It's just how people speak in the area, and the "moral" component of curse words is extremely arbitrary.
@@ZT1ST You realize the movie doesn't take place in real time, right?
@@thezachmarsh Sure, but that implies that there may be more that we didn't see.
Again, the cursing is so much in that timeframe that it does take place that over a 3 hour summary, they had 148 instances found.
Again, not necessarily a bad reason, but definitely worth reevaluating why that is.
Matt Damon: “I don’t swear much anymore”
Also Matt Damon: “******************”
They wrote it the way they said it, its why the dialogue in that movie feels real and genuine.
“It’s a place holder” 😂😅 I love Matt he is a great storyteller!
What a fantastic piece written by young brilliant minds. They were 25 and 27.
I gotta tell ya, the cussing is what made these guy's relatable. for me anyway, I'm not saying everyone talks this way, and I'm not implying all of South Boston does either, but all across this country there swatches of group's of people who this is exactly how they speak. I'm from Portland Oregon and except for the accent difference you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between me and my friend's and Southies. by the way Good Will Hunting might be my favorite movie, it between that and one other movie I'm not gonna name but I've watched GWH well over 100 times since I bought the DVD and will watch 100's more before I'm gone, just love it!
The movie and the characters wouldn’t be the same with different dialogue. It’s perfect the way it is.
No BS, raised and lived in NE, the "F" word, is literally a comma, in most sentences. ♥️
So the movie company says no you can't say fuck to many times..
So I get another movie company...
It’s the rating agency not the movie company. 💀You think they would film the entire movie, ask their own company to rate it, and then go to a new company and re film the entire thing just because they didn’t like the rating ? 😂
@@krad1314 I think this is a reference to one of Damon's Tom cruise impressions
A movie that never gets old. Very entertaining, well written and well acted along with a great story line.
This sounds like such a crazy conversation to have amongst fully grown people.
Its so funny to see from a European perspective because being offended over cursing is such a American phenomenon. Hopefully it dies out
Which part? The need to use that much profanity or the request to take so much profanity out?
Well they’re talking about something related to one of the best dramas ever made
Matt is a great story teller
I remember writing my senior thesis the only reason it didn’t get published in the school paper was because I had too much profanity by 79 words and my teacher loved it she thought it was the most realistic story ever written for her class I guess that’s what it takes
as a person from massachusetts, the heavy swearing in good will hunting is SO accurate
One of the greatest moments in Oscar history when Matt and Ben won for Best Original Screenplay.
incredible screen play and Movie!!! RIP the Goat Mr. Robert Williams!!!
Robin scared the shit out me when Will crosses the line and hes like I WILL FKING END YOU. 😮 oh shit
Good Will Hunting is one of the greatest movies ever. with one of the best scenes ever with Robin Williams on the beach, explaining life. That movie is perfect!
I think Wolf of Wall Street is the record holder for the most "fucks" said in a movie.
Edit: its actually Swearnet 2014
Yeah it's swearnet unfortunately. Not a great movie but a lot of fucks, 935
Closely followed by Fuck: The Documentary with 857 and then finally Wolf of Wall Street with 569 fucks only beating Uncut Gems by 9 fucks
That's part of why it was so good, the characters felt more real
Not just Boston most of New England uses the word fuck like a comma
I think it's mostly in the boston area though. I live in Western Mass. And even in Springfield, people don't drop f bombs nearly as much as Bostonians do. I think it's also becoming less common with younger Bostonians.
I'm from CT, a small town. Perhaps in the heart of some of the dumpier cities, people talk that way, but not in a town. But I'm 70 now and moved out of CT back in 1982.
Fuck is like the word dude
Some of us can covay EVERY emotion with either one of those words
And 90% of the people will understand what one is trying to get across
@@shireads2954idk where you are cuz i travel all around New England for work and hear the same dialogue slinging fucks out like hellos everywhere
Dude, I’m glad they didn’t edit the movie. It feels so real and lived in and authentic to the characters. Glad Matt doesn’t swear as much anymore but it was the RIGHT decision for who they were when they wrote and acted in it!
It's essential to the character. A lot of people from rough backgrounds don't realize how much they cuss and what an impact that has on others. I've had friends, hell my own brother, who cuss so much they don't realize when they are making kids, or strangers or family members uncomfortable.
Really adds a level of authenticity that they kept in the 148 fucks
The only reason people get uncomfortable stems from classism. People need to get over themselves, they’re just words.
@@AdamFloro good luck with changing the world. In the meantime, yes it makes one appear a lower class of culture. Which is detrimental. Some people really thrive on knowing they are "authentic". Like giving yourself a handicap and still having friends that also think that way anyways.

So true.I'm from Boston and I struggle to stop myself from using the F word now. It's f&*king tough.
Good Will Hunting is in my top 5 fave movies of all times. I’ve prob seen it dozens of times. When it first came out in the theater, I went twice in the same day.

Such a great film-when you learn the story of how the movie was written and ultimately created and watch it again you gain a new perspective that is even more inspiring….think i will watch it now.
I love good will hunting. So well written/played.
One of my absolute favorite films, it's a fuckin masterpiece
You can’t have a Boston set movie with only three instances of the F word
An absolute CLASSIC!!!
His performance... Ben's... and let's not forget Robin fkn Williams.
What a great movie!! 👍👍
I think the Oscar had the last laugh here. Language or no language. That movie was iconic.
it's so Irish, I love it
One of my favourite movies. Super talented dudes and Robin Williams sealed the deal
One of my favorite films. The acting was off the scale good.
This was literally how many of us spoke in the 90's. 😂😂😂
Title should be "Matt Damon on why there is so much swearing in Good Will Hunting." No one in Boston says "cursing."
Good Will Hunting was an awesome movie. I am glad they left it the way it was.
My I.T. teacher in 9th grade made it a habit to interrupt me every time I said uh or um in the middle of a question or statement. He broke my habit of that but now I just replace it with curse words unintentionally years later. Good for the moment. But now i sound like im from boston or new york lmao.
Your teacher was right. Practice not cursing. People who curse all the time sound like idiots. Overusing curse words also lessens their impact. Save those special words for when you really need them.
"so no, I haven't shown the kids that one yet" 😂😂😂
Bill Burr can _so_ relate to this
Bill Bore has no trouble on network television.
Saying fuck and fucking ten times a minute is just a pathetic tiresome affectation.
Burr has no trouble not cursing on network shows and his constant swearing comes across to me as a lame affectation.
I’m not from Boston but those two characters and their relationship seemed so genuine; it’s one reason I love that movie so much.
It's a shame he hasn't shown his kid that one because it's his best movie. I just watched it recently actually.
I grew up outside Boston. It's everywhere. The language is not offensive it's descriptive. You just need to be around it enough to know what is really being conveyed in the conversation.
It flows off your tongue like a Goddamn preposition! 😅
That's FUNNNEEE😆😄😁

Matt... my question was "how have you been?"
The msg in this movie was too overpowering, f words made it real, superb cast, sensational RW 🙏 still my top 10 movie. 💕
They were clearly Bostonians, so I didn't question it
Writing it as people actually speak versus how screenwriters think people speak is just another reason why this is a fucking good movie.
People from boston seem pretty similar to us here in England swearing is just how we talk. Also i feel it would of seemed less realistic as a whole.
it’s called new england for a reason, they’re the only americans who don’t grate on me

It made the dialogue feel natural
Been to Boston many times, can confirm!
I would love a world where no one swore any time anywhere.
Fuck is wrong with you? 😂 its words, people dieing, murder, anti vax bigots, racist kkk members, a lot worse out there to fucking care about
"We would do the lines together..." Are we still talking about movies? 😂
One of the best fuckin movies made.
No way to write a strong, emotional movie like that with characters based in Southie, or a ton of east coast areas, without that dialogue in place. It'd like making a movie about the Mexican Mafia and not letting them say holmes or ese. No one's falling for "what you talkin bout buddy"?
Matt is a very genuine and decent man. I think that it is about time that we learnt that bad language can easily be replaced with the proper use of English. People are far too lazy to learn a full vocabulary for the needs of all expression requirements. Bad language simply reflects what a poor education you have, and the far poorer level of social standing you have, because of your lack of respect for yourself and for others. Emotion can be made manifest far better through greater expression.
0:32 Boston (maybe New England generally) retained that from their British and Irish ancestors then 😂😂
Sees The Departed's script: "I see this as an absolute win."
That was a f..kin good f..kin movie and good f..kin interview.
Good Will Hunting: Too many F words
The Departed: Hold my beer
It's time language becomes uncensored like in western Europe. Every school kid uses the f word anyways and "oh u can only say it three times then it's okay" sounds like a rule a toddler made up
Absolutely adore that film.
Wait so they censor it for when he's talking on the show but the clips from the movie aren't bleeped? What's the point there?
It was censored because the clip was from Live TV.. I don’t think the dude who uploaded this censored it himself
A GREAT MOVIE WITH A GREAT CAST.
_”Ben and I wrote it”_

I can't imagine good will hunting having less cursing, its all exactly how it should of been

Yet still one of the best movies to this day
I think it makes the dialogue sound more authentic.
“Make your kids watch it.. but I won’t let my kids watch it”.
That's just a casual conversation between blocks any time of the day in Australia. F word is used as a verb with probably over a dozen different meanings you just get it on the fly. 😂😂😂😂
