      Damon and Affleck wrote the initial script, which was then developed into the final screenplay through a collaborative process that also included input from the director and Miramax executives, as well as advice and guidance from noted screenwriter William Goldman.

    Shout out to all of us out here who understand that therapy isn’t for everyone and therapy isn’t a cure-all.
    Also, a mention to the corrupt therapists out there. There are a lot.
    Don’t feel ashamed or alone if the only answer you get to any problem you have these days is to seek therapy. There are other ways to overcome and therapy is definitely not the magic potion it’s made out to be AT ALL.
    I know it’s taboo to say that therapy isn’t for everyone, but it isn’t and for all of you that know what I mean, you’re not alone.

    The Unabomber scene - Sean and Gerry dueling in the bar - is my favorite.
    It encapsulates the entire dilemma of Will Hunting and his life.
    Gerry is trying to save Will the math genius. Sean is trying to save Will the man.
    Gerry wants Sean to "fix" Will as a mechanic would fix a car. Sean wants to heal Will's fractured soul.

    • @sircdrom
      @sircdrom 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes, they're both father figures that actually love Will and want to help him. Gerry just does it in the only way he understands, projecting himself onto Will which most parents do. It's not for lack of love, but just lack of knowing any better.

    • @Stogie2112
      @Stogie2112 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@sircdrom ... I didn't see Gerry as a father figure at all, as Gerry wasn't interested in Will's life or his feelings. Gerry just wanted Will to become a math god - another Einstein.

    Thank you for mentioning to "check up on your happy friends". I am a behavioral health professional. One of the most common symptoms that a person will soon attempt s*icide, is a sudden, noticeable, and drastic change in attitude, affect, sociability, rate of speech and movement, and levels of anxiety from slow, isolated, "empty" or "blank" and anxious, to faster, more talkative and outgoing, less anxious, more cheerful, and more active. They may start giving things away as "gifts". They might clean their houses from top to bottom. These are all signs that we should NOT be applauding, but instead be on very high alert, because this person has made preparations and is relieved that they will soon no longer have to suffer. Growth happens slowly and painfully. If it's too fast and too drastic, your friend or family member is likely in serious danger.

    Part of the story is based on a real life of George Dantzig.
    He came to class late one day and assumed the 2 problems on the board were the homework assignment. He solved both problems (noting that they were pretty challenging).
    His professor was dumbfounded. George had just solved 2 of the most famous unsolved problems in Statistics.
    So, in this case, the reality is even more amazing than the movie - the problems in the movie were not "unsolved by anyone" they were simply difficult.

Being a therapist is hard work, but it’s very rewarding to help people learn how to heal themselves. Matt and Ben had such a great grasp of this, at such young ages. The best part of this film is the relationships. They are crafted so lovingly. Will and Sean and the way they help each other through their trauma. Will and Skylar and the silly little scenes (like the first kiss) that sound on paper like they'd never work, but when watched feel so personal and intimate. It builds the relationship so much faster when you see them doing the weird shit you remember doing with your significant other 16 years ago. But not just that but Sean and Gerald, Will and his friends. The character building is immaculate.
    The other great point is there is no villain. Most films would have the problem be mathematical. Will overcomes his demons with Sean's help. Proves the mean professor wrong and breaks the equation and wins the girl as reward. In this film everyone just wants what's best for Will. As misguided as Gerald is he ultimately isn't looking for vicarious success through him. He just wants to help Will be more than Gerald can be. The villain ultimately is Will himself. The low is Will trying to push all of the help away. The triumph is Will not winning the girl but taking the risk in trying to win the girl. That there is why this film is perfect. No cartoonish evil. No calamitous event. Just a real person interacting with real people

I’ve always seen this as a REAL thing that film makers just happen to record. The colors, setting, themes, score, cinematography, acting. I found out several years after his passing that he had a disease called Lewy Body Syndrome. It's kind of a mixture between Parkinson's and dementia. Chuckie is my favorite "movie friend". A lot of people would've written him as this dumb, obnoxious guy who means well but unknowingly holds Will back. It’s amazing screenplay (both with dialogue and story telling), paired with great direction, and arguably Robin Williams’ (God rest his soul) best acting performances of his career, makes an amazing film. This movie never gets old to me because it is such a sort of timeless message, especially for the time it came out. There is a reason Matt and Ben won an Oscar for that screenplay and it is wild to me that they wrote that at such a young age.
    An excellent and thoughtful reaction. I wish more folks, especially other men, would get your level; being able to communicate and experience these types of stories can be very healing for those hurts we have experienced. Man or woman its all good lessons that make us better people and that make living through these somewhat overwhelming times far less trying.

    So far, I think this is my favorite one of your reactions. It really is amazing to see it play out where somebody’s soul actually takes over and gets through the technical part of the mind. Finding how the two connect is something you don’t see so beautifully done in a movie. If I remember, right, I believe Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote this movie together as their first big collaboration. Job well done. What you said about finding the right person resonates so much. My husband of eight years suffered a cardiac arrest last summer. He literally died in front of me After mowing the front yard. He collapsed right in front of me and I had to do CPR. Even EMS worked on him all the way to the hospital and after a week on a ventilator he had surgery and he came out of it OK. he had a 95% blockage we did not know about. He is 100 % his old self. Thank God for the miracle, now. we have more time together. I hope people realize not to take it for granted when they find their one true love. I never did ,but I cry more at sad movies now but that’s OK. If all the bad relationships and terrible things in my life happened, so I was trained for this one day, where I could save him, then it was worth it.
