    When I was in 9th grade, our English teacher would make us free write for five minutes at the beginning of the period. Free writing is when you basically, "write as you think." She made us keep a notebook dedicated for that activity. No topic or any writing prompt provided. Just write literally whatever comes in mind for five whole minutes. At first it seemed futile. But later on, it served very beneficial. I had no idea how so much random thoughts and ideas are floating in my mind. It allowed me a five-minute break from everything else and get rid of those unnecessary thoughts that are consuming my mind power. I'm now in college and I still practice free writing in the middle of my day to take a pause from everything.

      For decades I journaled, it greatly helped me to see people well and myself and my past, I was able to clearly see people gaslighting me. People trying to discourage my progress. I gained insights and wisdom and a strong mind, and assurance. Reflection is wise to see one's own self.

    The day my son turned seven years old was the day I decided to finally step away from a toxic relationship with his mother. I had already separated from her three years prior, but it was a consistent off and on thing in which I naïvely hoped to “recover my family.” However, on that day, she told me she finally had settled down with another man, but still wanted me to be her friend... but I realized on that day that there was no future in this addiction to her, so I stepped away, bought a journal, read Jordan Peterson, then read Carl Jung, began journaling my dreams, and I will honestly say that my life has transitioned to a much more harmonious and peaceful place now than it was a year and a half ago. I have written almost eight hundred pages, and I’ve become just a bit more conscious of my own shadow.

    When you have no one that understands you as deep as you go, paper is all ear for you. It provides so much clarity and and a overall sense of calm in your life, it increases your memory, and it provides structure and motivates you to keep going because it gives you a better overall understanding of yourself and therefore a more meaningful purpose in life! So pick up that pencil and start writing, about whatever you find important!
    Writing not only safed my life, it also improved it by levels I couldn't imagine was possible! One love ya'll!

      Absolutely Matthijs, I especially find a lot of people whom I talk to never want to get deep into certain topics of discussions. Not that they are not smart but they prefer to think on a surface level, as there are happier things for them to think of. I found I need more and putting thoughts pencil to paper is ridiculously therapeutic.

    I used to casually journal in "google keep app" over few years, I never really payed attention to it or bothered to do it consistently. One time I wanted to delete the app but first I thought I'd quickly go over the entries and I was shocked! For the first time I realized, I was running in circles constantly wanting and staving for same things month after month after month. I was so unaware of the loops I'm in.And because of that I decided to address this and spend then next 2 years building proper habits and actually fulfil those goals. I don't know how I would have seen this loop if it wasn't for old journal entries, I'm still freaked out to this day of how else I would have snapped out of it. So yes journaling is that important. Great video, thx for sharing :)

    *"The only person we should compare ourselves to is our past self"* I LOVE that you said this - its such a powerful lesson and One that I've been practicing and teaching for a few years now. This way we are constantly in the "gain mindset" lifting and fueling ourselves forward from measuring our progress instead of measuring ourselves against others or our future self - non existant ideals that put us into the "Gap mindset" Keep up the great work!

    It really reduces anxiety to plan the days I dread or if a week looks crammed with lots of stuff I'd rather not do but have to, if I just write everything down on one page, it looks manageable and isn't that looming monster anymore, but just an ugly thing I have to get past.
    What really transformed my daily life, is not having seperate notebooks for different areas of my life (as one for mundane tasks, only only for creative purposes, and so on) but throwing absolutely everything into one. It felt weird at first, but it saves me so much pain and I don't have millions of half filled notebooks lying around. When it's filled, I go through it again and see if there are things I want to copy into a very beautiful or special notebook with a specific theme, and just copy it into that one. I love that system! 🌟
    And questions. Sometimes I just start filling a page with questions, when I'm really overwhelmed, so I don't pressure myself to analyze everything as I go or try and find solutions immediately. The insecurities can just flow out and after they're out of the way, the calm, adult self can come in and try to find "answers". And maybe that's not even needed anymore, the fears just wanted to get out without an attempt to fix them right away! Maybe that can help someone!
    Happy journaling everyone! 👑🐳

      You have to practice....When you write, you will have a strong need to write in a way that some day someone else will read it...And because of this, you will NEVER write the truth...Your writting will become useless...You have to teach yourself that when you write, its only for you...Try both ways, you will see the difference..
      Here is an exercise you can use....Write 1+1=2 on one of your bedroom
      walls,,,in 1 ft letters with a black magic markers...and look at it twice during the day and before writting...It means ( simple, clear, and certain )

      Maybe it's about wallowing around in your misery and staying there that isn't helpful. What you do sounds like the healthy version: get it out of your head and on to paper, and then move forward because you freed yourself. The unhelpful thing would be to get stuck in the same miserable stuff.

    4 years of this incredible habit here. It started with events of my daily life, poorly described, but now my journal has no limits:
    - Sections dedicated to my goals that time to time I review and check my progress;
    - Daily life events that I use pictures, sometimes to enrich them;
    - Thoughts and feeling entries;
    - Ideias to use on Work, Studies, etc.
    I use a digital journal because I can add updates on the entries I judge that would be useful for my life. Another reason to use the digital version, is that I can put tags and divide some entries so later, I can access quickly what is most important.

    I have written daily in a journal for 51 yrs. It is a habit that has helped me figure out my mental health journey in a positive way. I dump my negativity in it instead of on my fellow travelers and figure out how to act in the way I feel is really me…a loving person. I collage ephemera, add stickers and my own drawings as well. Keeping it legible is my only rule. I don’t leave it out for others to “accidentally “ read to preserve integrity. Don’t worry- just do it. ❤️😀🥳🌷

    I use to journal a lot in my late teens, then I went to uni and started meeting new people and they often made fun of my journal - so I stopped doing it. In 2018, after I quit World of Warcraft I started to journal again to deal with the anxious thoughts related to being addicted to that game. It helped tremendously. Afterward, though, my journals became my creative outlet. When I was bored at work, I would write down an idea for a novel, a part of worldbuilding, scribble the alphabet for a language I was thinking about. It's been three years since I started journaling regularly, now I have eight journals spanning from 2018 to March 2021. Journaling has helped me a lot, I highly recommend it. And don't listen to dickheads who make fun of you saying: "Dear diary, today blah blah blah".

    I have been journaling for most of my adult life. I just want to add something. Journaling does not just have to be about what is going on in your immediate life. It also works well to process thinking about topics like are presented by these videos. It is also a good way to clear the mind of bits and pieces just like meditation. Anyone that finds themselves to seemingly just writing about negative things going on, please take a moment each day to write down one thing that you are thankful for. Journaling had/has a role with becoming and staying sober, a lot of documented relapses and why they happened and how to maybe find ways to avoid falling back. Relapses happend 2-3 days before i got drunk again, i felt back into old habits, mindset wasn't good, inactive lifestyle for example, the relapse was predictable. Positive affirmations, roughly planing the day, reminding my ass to be thankful of what i've got. I keep it simple, honest and sex it up with smilies...who cares it is my journal.

    I have been journaling since I was 16. My purpose going into it was to record my personal history. Though over time, when I feel bad, I stop journalling, that's a consistent theme in my journals. If I am not feeling bad, I'm observing and then pouring out my emotions. Just ruminating over and over again. I got to the point where I did not want to write some things because I was ashamed of having done them, I know I would look like an idiot if I confessed in there that I did it.
    I look at past journals as reasons to be ashamed of who I am now, as the younger me would surely condemn me.
    I know I should keep writing but I just do not feel comfortable doing so any more. I've been working on the same book since 2016, before that I would turn over a book in a year.
    Thanks for the video, it helped me see what I had been doing and really shows me where I should improve.

    I really like to journal and find that it's quite a helpful way to make sense of a day.
    I usually write about two things:
    1) Did I do anything today that either created happiness (in myself or others)?
    2) Did I do anything today that made me proud (which could include achieving a main goal or sub-goals that I will have set for myself the evening before or that morning)?
    If I can answer yes to either of those questions, then I consider it a successful day, if not then I consider it an unsuccessful day. I journal on my phone through an app that allows me to track and look back very easily, so that I can reflect on my comments of successful and unsuccessful days and recognise patterns and trends.

Also if you don’t know what you want to do with your life you can write down everyday when you are feeling your best and after some time you look back and there should be a pattern of the things you love to do and maybe make a career out of it. There’s lots of things you can journal about, doesn’t have to be a huge paragraph just start off small, baby steps :)

    a video about narcissism would be fitting. For some reason I am convinced that there are some people, in your audience, just blatantly displaying being stoic instead of actually being stoic

    I do Julia Cameron’s THE ARTIST’S WAY stream of consciousness in the mornings for abt 39 minutes. The thought I most often end with is “this is better than a therapist!” And it is.

    A neat thing with journaling is you can discover patterns with in your own thinking to promote in a way further purposeful growth.

    my form of meditation is reflecting on the words of wisdom, and responding to them as the meditations, stoic teachings or Buddha's sayings and sometimes quotes or poetry.. it deepens my understanding and inspire more ideas and help me on my personal journey of self awareness..
    i reflect one page per quote in a specific journal or notebook

    That’s a critical point at the end. Journaling is great for all of the reasons mentioned, but ultimately you need to take action and make things happen. Overthinking is a horrible thing and journaling can just be overthinking and overanalyzing on paper.

    Thanks for the warning about getting stuck in the past while journaling. my goal should be to get the current nonsense out of my mind and on to paper, leaving nothing for the remainder.

    I'm trying to stick to journaling for a while now. I kinda like the way I put more effort into daily struggles just because otherwise I would be ashamed to put my day on paper in the evening.

    I started journaling many years ago while reading a book called I Can If I Want To. The author would recommend writing down thoughts on different aspects of your life. The book must have been influenced by Stoic philosophy because the premise was external events cannot cause emotions but how you interpret those events. Anyway it was life changing. I learned so much about myself and felt a sense of peace that I had never experienced. Today I still journal but not quite as often. Great video! Thanks!

    I found that journal in usual usually allows you to apply the Heisenberg principle. That is if you want to stop doing something or you want to start doing something just observe what you are actually doing. Do not Make an effort to change just observe. I have found that the only thing in the universe is universe is energy and attention
