Yes, and it could be included in the whole journaling experience. The fact that you are writing a letter it does not mean that you have to send it. It is a way to look into yourself and the true feelings you feel towards that person.
I have a list of about 25 people that I write to regularly, the amount of writers back has lessoned significantly but I still keep my habit because I think it’s a very important one to show friends and family that I love them! 😀
I started journaling in 2020 when we were in lockdown, and I stuck to it. I had no one to talk to, even when lockdown was over, and having somewhere to share my thoughts and feelings really helped. But I do get a little sad when I reread old entries, because we change so much as people 🥲 and it hurts when we don’t achieve what we want to-or when things don’t go to plan 💔♥️

I relate to this! I’ve kept a diary for many years, but only truly started journaling consistently during 2020. Like you said, it’s very emotional to go back and read those entries when I was at one of my worst points, but it’s also a nice reminder to see how far I’ve grown.
I've been keeping a journal for about 25 years - sometimes months between entries- but it's sooo nice to look back on at what I was like at different times in my life! I also keep one each for my children where I write entries for them that they can keep when they're grown up 💛
As someone who finally got journaling to stick 2 years ago now, I find the best thing for me is to write when I need it and to fill my journal with whatever I need at that moment. To write letters that will never be sent, to feel feelings when my mind is going round in circles. To understand my own voice and the voice of the universe or my guides. To have feelings and ask for solutions and how they stream out of me when tapped into the creative space. The thing with journaling is it’s personal. Never go into it with the aim of getting the same result as someone else, especially not straight away. Journaling is a messy exploration of the self and a record of who you are. Something you read back when you are struggling to see who you are or find hope. I am on my third journal now. I do not write in it everyday but I think that better reflects the flow of life and time and creative thinking. Like waves that go in and out. There are times you ride the wave in and write pages on pages and other times you just float to survive and do nothing else. Journaling is a joy and so healing for the soul.
I'm also a sporadic journalist...I've tried daily entries but get behind and that frustrates me. So...my journaling is more "Commonplace" style now. I simply talk to whosoever may hear me one day.
I’ve journaled daily for…forever, decades at this point! I love it so much. Once it’s a habit your golden and you start to rely on it to sort your thoughts out. Life saver, literally

I always loved that bit- I think I can even quote it almost verbatim from memory alone lol. It goes something like "I am feeling very poorly today and quite stupid and hate everything and everyone." Always loved it because it showed that every person is just a person with bad days. It's also hilarious.
I started journaling during the lockdown of 2020. I'd journal every night before falling asleep. Initially I was writing my emotions, then I started tracking my sleep, food I ate, things I got done. Now I write a small recap of each day - it exhausts my mind and prevents me from overthinking, which results in better sleep. It has been over 2 years and I still journal every night. I then bought a planner this year. I use my planner to track my sleep, meals, habits, books I read, things I purchased, etc. I find all this really therapeutic. It gives me a perspective about small things that add to my progress. I also have a writer's journal and a milestone journal. A writer's journal is for my creative outbursts and my milestones journal is where I record any big highlights of my year. I am also gonna now start this word association exercise you showed and I will try writing descriptions of my surroundings too!
After many years of attending workshops, I read Julia Cameron's book THE RIGHT TO WRITE. She advocated 'Morning Pages' and keeping a notebook. The title alone gave me confidence. I co-ran a poet's guild, which developed into 'spoken word' events. I've scribbled in many notebooks since, 'harvesting' ideas, overheard conversations, reflections, observations, words and phrases I've noticed or thought of, made notes in art galleries about pictures which i later developed into poetry, short stories or a play. Writing is not so much scribbling, it's more a way of life.
I am a daily journaler and have done so for about 40 years. And the brain reacts much differently to the action of hand writing. I also love reading journals, letters, and diaries of famous writers. So many writers practice the art of journaling.
I have been Journaling since I was 10 years old, not every day and there was a time when I would go for a month or so without writing. Even so, I have completed 73 journals, and am about to complete my 74th. 40 years of Journaling every day ... must be at least over 150 journals.
I like the way you described a narrators mentality based on the words they use to describe something. Daisy yellow - corn yellow - crime scene tape yellow. That helps bring that awareness to my own writing.

I find it hilarious that Woolf described Joyce as rough and working class. He was privately educated at Clongowes, one of the poshest schools in Ireland. Did she ever read Portrait of the Artist which is plainly set in a private school? I'm afraid Woolf's class hatred is one of several reasons I don't like her as a writer. She doesn't speak for people of my background.

In 2018 I took a trip by myself to London for what I called an “Eat, Paint, Love” trip. I found a great “experience” on AirBNB - it was a Journal Writing class. It was a private class and we read some of Virginia Woolf’s diaries for inspiration. It was really well done - almost like a class I’d taken at University. Best part was that it was hosted in a shepherd’s hut - and they served a cream tea. Loved it. Went back home a week later and ordered a bunch of Virginia Woolf’s books!
I want to try journaling but I feel like I always forget or get too tired to do it. Props to you for being consistent throughout the month :D it's inspiring me to try it out!!
As someone who started journaling the beginning of this year, these are the most helpful ones that have helped me a ton. 1. dont be afraid to be illustrative! Im a very creative person and so sometimes words dont get my point across or I need to let out alot of ideas without hurting my wrist. I tape in artwork, post it notes, cnady wrappers, magazine cut outs, logos from stickers and bags, basically anything that you gathered that day or week that you wanna incude. you can make it in any order you please, arrange them in anyway you like! 2. dont let journaling everyday pressure you. You do not have to write everyday, especially if you dont have much to say that day to begin with. I have days where there isnt much i wanna talk about or work out. Typcally itll be an off day or a day i merely do manifesting and meditating. and 3. make your journal something you wanna see evertday. Some thing i realized pretty quick into my journaling is that I got more excited writing in my jourbal every morning after i decorated it and smuthered it in stickers (i love stickers so much i have them on everything). Make your journal a place you can write and express your feelings through different kinds of media! youve got this :)
My suggestion? Don’t force it. Write whenever you feel like writing. I have been writing for years. At first I wanted to do it every single day, but that’s just not possible sometimes and so I decided to just let it happen. Do get a beautiful notebook and a pen you love, it helps when your tools makes you want to grab them and use them. Don’t try to copy anyone. Write away, this space is yours and for your eyes only. Do whatever you want with it. Sometimes I don’t write thoughts and feelings, sometimes I write about things that interest me. I wrote the other day about the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and it took me into a dark hole of research about the time line of Star Wars and I just wrote it down because why not? 😅 I sometimes write about projects and plans and make diagrams or drawings. I paste pictures and tickets and stickers. Sometimes I decorate my pages because is absolutely fun to do so and not having a whole lot of blank page helps to not feel intimidated by it. I have cried, laughed, and have absolutely horrible times writing. But it did take time for me to find my method and style. Not forcing it was the key, and now I do journal most days. Sometimes is a line, sometimes is 10 pages, sometimes I don’t journal for weeks, but then I just go back as if I had not stopped. Is nice! Also! Maybe don’t get a huge thick notebook. Start with a small one, something you can see yourself filling quickly, for some of us seeing that we advance quickly helps to keep the inspiration up.
What I've realized is that I get very stuck into the mindset of doing it everyday but really, I might not have enough to write about everyday. I'm going to start keeping a journal for me to put an entry to when I *feel* like I have something to say. Feelings to dump, stress to let go of.
This reminds me a lot of "The Artists Way" workbook's daily pages :) After you dump your stress and emotions, it turns into creative blips and random writings. I love it!
I started that workbook, I think it was supposed to be done daily consistently, for three months? I started the book twice but couldn't stay consistent...just curious if you were able to.
Journaling came to me in November of 2020, during my first breakup. Ironically my first full journal and the one i began with was actually gifted to me by my ex. At first, my entries were hopeless and dreadful, the pages literally filled with the heartbreak that I didn't know how to handle. Eventually though I began to see a change in my writing, and seeing that unfold before my eyes felt magical! I had documented my grief but also the path I had taken to getting back on track and through the journaling I realized that all I needed to do to "get back on track" to happiness was to practice mindfulness. Now a days, I continue to write just about anything, depending on the circumstances. I don't think I will ever not be journaling now, or at least I hope that is the case :) Also, saying journaling is like having a time capsule of your life is so accurate, a perfect way to describe it in my opinion!
When you write … also think of what you would like to read from your great grandmothers journal and write it in your own journal. I would LOVE to have got to read what she did that day and how her home was laid out etc.!!!
I absolutely love this. I've been Journaling since I was a teenager and it's been very therapeutic for me. I recently found a journal of mine from high school and got kind of emotional at entries where I talked about my aunt, who just passed away a month ago. she was a librarian and avid journaler herself and one of her poems was shared at the funeral. lately Journaling has been helping me navigate my grief. thank you for this very insightful video!! -- also my personal favorite type of journal are the Moleskine journals
i've been journalling since i was a little kid, im 19 now and it's still my best friend!! you can literally be yourself and write whatever you want and i've discovered so much of myself through journalling and overcome so many of my problems
I bought a 256 numbered pages journal and a fountain pen after watching this video lol. I love the idea of knowing how many pages I wrote and your video really inspired me to make my journaling experience a bit more fancy. It definitely helps motivate! I've been journaling on my phone and old notebooks that didn't really make me happy and some company's pen we had laying around 😂
Journaling is for you, do it however and whenever you want to. It is therapeutic, at times. It can be eye-opening, as well. Other times, it can be boring and dull, yet those entries can be helpful.
I love this video. I turned 27 on March 21st this year and since then I’ve been writing a daily journal (it’s also been a bit of a scrapbook too). I plan to keep a daily journal for this year until I turn 28. I think it will be lovely to look back on. Watching this video makes me want to expand what I write about and not just use it to document my stream of consciousness (I’ll probably still do this most days). I love the idea of using the time as an opportunity to develop as a writer and to play with language and symbolism. Thank you for opening my mind to other ways of journaling. I also want to read Virginia Woolf’s diary entries. They sound fascinating. I’ve just started my first Virginia Woolf (Flush) and I’m loving it!
I’ve been journaling everyday for three years now, I have a two hour journaling routine each evening before bed. Not only does it improve my writing, it has also been a big tool for improving my mental health.

If you enjoyed doing this maybe look into these two books. "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron "Old Friend from Far Away" by Natalie Goldberg I've been journaling for close to 30 years. I love these books. The first is a good practice. The second is practice to write a memoir, but I enjoy using it as a topic book. I would recommend (internet search) printable feelings charts or charts that list emotions. I would suggest printable random word lists instead of a random word generator. There are apps that provide story starters. I love doing journal entries from a different point of view. I put that character from the story starter in my situation or myself in theirs and write my entry that way. I have so much fun with this. I hope this wasn't too much all in one comment. Journaling is my favorite thing to do.
I've just stared journaling a couple days ago and it is already so theraputic for me. Love the sound of writing with a fountain pen. I kept watching that part and thinking I should use my Lamy fountain pen again. Good ASMR material. :)
I fill three pages of my journal (A4) in half an hour. If I had to go that slow I just wouldn't do it. The thing is to not think so much, just express yourself without censoring yourself. It may be embarrassing or shameful later, but then you never have to look at it again. That's the whole point, to get it out of your head and onto the page.
Don’t stop journaling! That’s impressive in 30 days. I’ve kept my journals since 1997 which was the year I lived in England. My only regret is that my language was not more descriptive. I also have journals where I just vented and I’ve questioned whether or not I should burn those but that’s memory. I have a few journal books that spanned several years. I’m happy to have them because I tend to forget quite a bit. Reading them is like visiting with an old friend. It also allows me to see my growth as a person. I’m still lazy at times. Always a work in progress. I also recommend taking a lot of photos 😊.
I found a lot of value in this video (not least the ASMR of listening to you write on the pages) but I also appreciated that you video yourself writing the very first page, how careful you are with your manuscript. And then, later, how you've cast those careful swoops of your ink pen aside, and you're more interested in what you're writing rather than how it is presented/how it looks on the page. Beautiful.
I’ve been journaling on and off since I was very young, like 7! But even earlier I’d you count random lists and drawings in a random notebook. I started writing all words when I was going through some major traumatic times in my life. The happy writing came when I got pregnant with my first child. Documenting more than stream of concious ness and a therapy. I have always used journaling as a form of therapy for myself. I never had anyone there for me and my journals always have been, unconditionally.
This is so lovely and you are so lovely. I don't journal all the time, but I love the process when I do. I agree with you in that it is very therapeutic. I also love it cause it gives you this rare moment where when looking back you have somewhat of a third person perspective. It is unique because you went through it, but when you look back you can read the intricate parts of that time and look at where you are now.

They came clean to me and that's how I found out. It broke my heart and since then I can't write. I've journaled on and off since I was about 17 onwards...now over 30. Would highly recommend it to anyone, doesn't even have to be good writing. Bullet points, lists, fragments of thoughts, it's all good to get out so it's not weighing on your mind so much. I sometimes go days or weeks or months without writing too, but eventually come back to it as a great form of catharsis, and also as if i never stopped. It becomes so easy the nore you do it, and without feeling pressured or forced to do so. Glad to see more people picking up the habit. Edit: also great to look back on old journals and see a timeline of yourself and what happened in your life and who you were, both good and bad.
I have been journaling since 2006 and it’s been a rewarding experience. It’s wonderful (and embarrassing) looking back on all the memories and my dumb self in the past haha. The only downside is the ton of journals that I will have to carry with me during moving out! 😅
The exercise at the end is SO helpful! I’m definitely going to try both of these things. I feel like the figurative language is so helpful for anyone like me who is stuck in a serious writing rut. So happy I watched this video!
I love how you got a special journal just for the task, and really nice pens! I was doing the Artist's Way journaling practice: 3 pages a day, stream of consciousness. But I need first thing in the morning, after a walk in the morning, and tiny throwaway journals, so I don't get intimidated, and I don't have to worry what's being written down.

I grew up in the era that predates the internet, home computers, cell phones, etc. I love that I was born and raised during that time. I've been keeping a journal since I was about 15 years I used to make an entry daily, but then as life became busier my entries grew further and further apart. I'm making it a point to do more journaling. It's cathartic, therapeutic, and for me, self care, because it helps me unload everything that I'm going through, feeling, etc. Journaling and handwritten letters are both something we need to get back to.

Inspired by your video, I started journalling too! I'm only two days in, but as a poet and writer myself, I find it very liberating. I actually try freehand writing for all of my outlines and I really really get inspired after such sessions. I think I was born to write longhand but we have computers and my attention span has been limited so much I need to look at a screen with multiple tabs open to work on a single document lol

I've been journaling since I was 15 years old. Now, I'm 32. I only write when I feel that there's something that's happened that has had an impact in my life, as tiny as it may be. I love the idea of revisiting my journal 10 years from now and reading what I wrote in it. All the things that will have happened, my feelings in those moments, my wishes and plans, my mindset. Everything, really. When I'm writing my entries, I like to describe a bit where I am, what's happened before my writing, what I'll do next and how I was feeling when I picked up my journal. Also, as I've written 7 journals now and they are quite bulky, so last year I decided to write digital journals. I type into Google docs and save them. One document per year. Apart from saving space, the nice thing about it is that I can also add pictures to it. 😍
I loved this video!! Whenever I try to journal, for some reason I feel the need to introduce myself despite the fact nobody is going to read it, and then get bothered when I talk about something when it's hanging in a space with no context!! I always found the best thoughts/ imagery I got was when I was walking around thinking to myself and then I'd be writing random notes in my phone instead to try and remember them. I really want to try this challenge to see if I can get past the first stage that keeps me stuck!! Thank you :)
I write nearly to Woolfe's pattern, entirely inadvertently. Also, I cull essays and stories from letters written in the evenings. Hm. And yes, I've got scads of filled journals, boxes of them going back years. Decades, actually. Thank you for a great commentary. Brava. Oh, and hooray for the Lamy fountain pen.
Ive been journaling since i have started writing, and i havent been all so regular sometimes even 1 entry in a month, recounting usually grief and some very happy moments and sometimes just motivating myself. It's therapeutic and i know whatever i do about myself via journaling
I started journaling when i was in primary school in the light of the fact that i wanna be a writer and up until now I'm still writing a journal actually I'm currently creating my own book (by the way I'm 18 yrs old hshs). oh i love Virginia Wolf, she's one of my favorite writers!♥️
Journal writing for your personal growth and progression is extremely individual and creative. Mindfulness and meditation exercises wellness exercises and book reviews or chapters. Really depends on the focus position. Journal writing is essentially Narrative therapy. It’s been a while since I seen some one use a fountain pen ✒️ love it. Ok here a nice little challenge go collect a bunch of random post cards and send them to friends. Actually go and source a writing ✍️ store and get a letter writing set and write 1 letter a week 1-2 pages included a Polaroid picture. And you must tell 2 dad jokes. You will be blown away by how much joy this is when you get letters back.
the way you started the very first entry with handwriting slowly and intentionally and eventually started writing quickly and with less care for neatness was very relatable and validating. your handwriting is a million times better than mine at either point regardless, but still!
Great video, thankyou. Lots of helpful comments too. I use my journal as a way to sort out my flurry of ideas and plans (adhd) with sketches and lists as well as script. I used to write a lot about my feelings but when those become too much i use my journal as a distraction....a design and plan space. Watching this has given me the idea to combine the personal journaling exercise with the figurative language sprints- choose one thing from your own day and do the sprint about that, rather than writing about it how you'd describe it to a friend
When you described how you write notes to yourself through different media, I thought that a "commonplace book" could be a useful notebook for you to keep. I have a small, pocket-sized journal where I capture interesting quotes, print and paste in inspiring images, and other tidbits that are generally inspiring or thought-provoking. Perhaps you could capture things in one notebook instead of spread across digital notes, e-mail, etc.? It is definitely slower than typing a quick note on the phone, but I have really enjoyed leafing through my commonplace book to revisit what I captured.

I really should get back into journaling, I fall off of it for months at a time. I love the notion of Woolf calling it 'loosening writing ligaments.' I also want to try a regular (maybe not DAILY) letter writing routine, even if it's just to myself. I loved when you said in the figurative language example the bus was 'crime scene tape yellow' and I kind of want to write a short thing about that, maybe a short story or poem. It created such a vivid image in my mind and I felt so inspired. I feel like that random word generator would be so useful as an exercise the way you use it to make fresh connections! Physical journals can feel confining. Sometimes, they are too beautiful all by themselves as an object and I kind of worry that I will "disappoint" them. But usually, the physical journal just isn't accessible enough. Most of the time I can't be bothered to even fish out my little notebook (if, indeed, I even have my bag with me). I write on anything--post-its, the backs of receipts, scratch pads, gum wrappers. So, I find a spiralbound artist's sketchbook best because the coil is quite a bit larger than the height of the coil and I just glue the random "jots" in. They are random because I usually do not have the presence of mind to date them and, sometimes, I stick them to my wall first if I feel particularly transfixed by them. The artist's notebooks are also great because you can also affix small objects that have appealed to you or notes on un-paper-like materials like napkins that have more heft.
For Christmas last year I got a moleskin journal, 240 pages, and I started writing in it January of this year. There has not been one month I haven't written in it, which is really surprising to me because I always thought of myself as someone who could never keep up a journal. But ever since I stopped using social media I realized I had a lot of thoughts that I was just keeping to myself that I wanted to get out somehow. I felt a lot more creative and open to myself about what I think of things, knowing it didn't need to be edited before I posted it or anything like that. I think it's made me more open to my friends too! I'm almost done with it, because I used a lot of it for To Do lists, so I want to buy smaller notebooks I can use for lists. It's surprising to me that I am managing to finish an entire journal, and for a whole year! I think I'm going to make it a tradition to keep a journal for every year.
Slightly off topic, but what gorgeous handwriting! Eloquence isn’t necessary for journaling. Journaling gets the scraps out of your head so you are freed up to be eloquent
I used to write a lot when I was younger, basically since I learned how to write up until the end of high school. Those were rough years and I didn't like to talk about my feelings with people so I just wrote it all and literally everywhere, my notebooks, pieces of paper, the edge of a newspaper, later on my phone... just everywhere. I still find some notes around my room when I clean lol. I've been wanting to start again for ages but the thing is, those years were so hard for me that my mind linked sadness with writing, I believe just because I didn't have any kind of structure or further thought, I just wrote what was in my mind and a lot of that was very sad, unfortunately. I like this kind of video because they're inspiring, it reminds me that writing doesn't necessarily have to be such a chaotic experience. Of course, it can be cathartic at times, but it can also be a different experience, I can write beauty and fun instead of just spiraling. Idk but thank you for your video, hopefully I can get somewhere hah
I also started journaling and it feels so good to have this routine. Most of the times I do it before I go to sleep. Sometimes I also write only one sentence or a few sentences, sometimes I fill the whole page. I write about my feelings, random thoughts and sometimes the typical "today I went... ". Most of the times I don't paint a picture of how my day has been. So it's not really like a time capsule it's more like random snippets from my mind, but it feels so good to stick to doing it everyday. I also have a habit tracker. It's not for everyone to journal everyday, that's okay, just do it when you feel like it or like once a week. For everyone who does want to do it everyday: Even if it's just one sentence everyday, that's okay! And if you don't have your journal with you, write it down on your phone or on a paper and write it in your journal later.
What a wonderful idea. Thank you for documenting this process and sharing with us. I once did a series of journal entries that were letters to one of my role models. It made me think that you could write to Virginia Woolf. Day One Dear Ms. Woolf, While we may not have met in person, I wanted to write and express my esteem for your writings and tell you how much your work means to me. etc etc it can also be conversational: “I know you didn’t like James Joyce, but I wonder if you had considered xyz … “ or even an argument, if you felt so bold. These kinds of journal entries helped me clarify many things and find my way into a deeper relationship with my role model. Sending you all good wishes for the writings and explorations.
I've been journaling for many many years, sometimes is difficult to fill the pages and sometimes like you feel like you are running out of space. Is something I recomend doing either if you are a writer to warm up or even for spill out everything you want and clear your mind.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it but there is a book called the artists way where it helps you regain your creativity. One of the parts of the whole program are “morning pages” every single morning you wake up and write at least 3 handwritten pages. They aren’t there to be read or shared, it simply gets all the crap out of your head so you can really get to the good stuff. It helps not just with your creativity but I really feels it helps me start my day on good footing. Try googling it if you don’t want to read the book but I think that would be an awesome challenge for you to try!
A few months ago I got the book "Great Diaries: The World's Most Remarkable Diaries, Journals, Notebooks, and Letters" and I absolutely loved it! I was so inspired and it gave me so many ideas about what I could write, I started journaling again. And I still enjoy it! 😍

Yes, and it could be included in the whole journaling experience. The fact that you are writing a letter it does not mean that you have to send it. It is a way to look into yourself and the true feelings you feel towards that person.
I have a list of about 25 people that I write to regularly, the amount of writers back has lessoned significantly but I still keep my habit because I think it’s a very important one to show friends and family that I love them! 😀
I started journaling in 2020 when we were in lockdown, and I stuck to it. I had no one to talk to, even when lockdown was over, and having somewhere to share my thoughts and feelings really helped. But I do get a little sad when I reread old entries, because we change so much as people 🥲 and it hurts when we don’t achieve what we want to-or when things don’t go to plan 💔♥️

I relate to this! I’ve kept a diary for many years, but only truly started journaling consistently during 2020. Like you said, it’s very emotional to go back and read those entries when I was at one of my worst points, but it’s also a nice reminder to see how far I’ve grown.
I've been keeping a journal for about 25 years - sometimes months between entries- but it's sooo nice to look back on at what I was like at different times in my life! I also keep one each for my children where I write entries for them that they can keep when they're grown up 💛

As someone who finally got journaling to stick 2 years ago now, I find the best thing for me is to write when I need it and to fill my journal with whatever I need at that moment. To write letters that will never be sent, to feel feelings when my mind is going round in circles. To understand my own voice and the voice of the universe or my guides. To have feelings and ask for solutions and how they stream out of me when tapped into the creative space. The thing with journaling is it’s personal. Never go into it with the aim of getting the same result as someone else, especially not straight away. Journaling is a messy exploration of the self and a record of who you are. Something you read back when you are struggling to see who you are or find hope. I am on my third journal now. I do not write in it everyday but I think that better reflects the flow of life and time and creative thinking. Like waves that go in and out. There are times you ride the wave in and write pages on pages and other times you just float to survive and do nothing else. Journaling is a joy and so healing for the soul.

I'm also a sporadic journalist...I've tried daily entries but get behind and that frustrates me. So...my journaling is more "Commonplace" style now. I simply talk to whosoever may hear me one day.

I started journaling during the lockdown of 2020. I'd journal every night before falling asleep. Initially I was writing my emotions, then I started tracking my sleep, food I ate, things I got done. Now I write a small recap of each day - it exhausts my mind and prevents me from overthinking, which results in better sleep. It has been over 2 years and I still journal every night. I then bought a planner this year. I use my planner to track my sleep, meals, habits, books I read, things I purchased, etc. I find all this really therapeutic. It gives me a perspective about small things that add to my progress. I also have a writer's journal and a milestone journal. A writer's journal is for my creative outbursts and my milestones journal is where I record any big highlights of my year. I am also gonna now start this word association exercise you showed and I will try writing descriptions of my surroundings too!
After many years of attending workshops, I read Julia Cameron's book THE RIGHT TO WRITE. She advocated 'Morning Pages' and keeping a notebook. The title alone gave me confidence. I co-ran a poet's guild, which developed into 'spoken word' events. I've scribbled in many notebooks since, 'harvesting' ideas, overheard conversations, reflections, observations, words and phrases I've noticed or thought of, made notes in art galleries about pictures which i later developed into poetry, short stories or a play. Writing is not so much scribbling, it's more a way of life.
I am a daily journaler and have done so for about 40 years. And the brain reacts much differently to the action of hand writing. I also love reading journals, letters, and diaries of famous writers. So many writers practice the art of journaling.

I have been Journaling since I was 10 years old, not every day and there was a time when I would go for a month or so without writing. Even so, I have completed 73 journals, and am about to complete my 74th. 40 years of Journaling every day ... must be at least over 150 journals.

I like the way you described a narrators mentality based on the words they use to describe something. Daisy yellow - corn yellow - crime scene tape yellow. That helps bring that awareness to my own writing.

I find it hilarious that Woolf described Joyce as rough and working class. He was privately educated at Clongowes, one of the poshest schools in Ireland. Did she ever read Portrait of the Artist which is plainly set in a private school?
I'm afraid Woolf's class hatred is one of several reasons I don't like her as a writer. She doesn't speak for people of my background.

In 2018 I took a trip by myself to London for what I called an “Eat, Paint, Love” trip. I found a great “experience” on AirBNB - it was a Journal Writing class. It was a private class and we read some of Virginia Woolf’s diaries for inspiration. It was really well done - almost like a class I’d taken at University. Best part was that it was hosted in a shepherd’s hut - and they served a cream tea. Loved it. Went back home a week later and ordered a bunch of Virginia Woolf’s books!

As someone who started journaling the beginning of this year, these are the most helpful ones that have helped me a ton.
1. dont be afraid to be illustrative! Im a very creative person and so sometimes words dont get my point across or I need to let out alot of ideas without hurting my wrist. I tape in artwork, post it notes, cnady wrappers, magazine cut outs, logos from stickers and bags, basically anything that you gathered that day or week that you wanna incude. you can make it in any order you please, arrange them in anyway you like!
2. dont let journaling everyday pressure you. You do not have to write everyday, especially if you dont have much to say that day to begin with. I have days where there isnt much i wanna talk about or work out. Typcally itll be an off day or a day i merely do manifesting and meditating.
and 3. make your journal something you wanna see evertday. Some thing i realized pretty quick into my journaling is that I got more excited writing in my jourbal every morning after i decorated it and smuthered it in stickers (i love stickers so much i have them on everything). Make your journal a place you can write and express your feelings through different kinds of media!

I have been writing for years. At first I wanted to do it every single day, but that’s just not possible sometimes and so I decided to just let it happen.
Do get a beautiful notebook and a pen you love, it helps when your tools makes you want to grab them and use them.
Don’t try to copy anyone. Write away, this space is yours and for your eyes only. Do whatever you want with it.
Sometimes I don’t write thoughts and feelings, sometimes I write about things that interest me. I wrote the other day about the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and it took me into a dark hole of research about the time line of Star Wars and I just wrote it down because why not? 😅
I sometimes write about projects and plans and make diagrams or drawings.
I paste pictures and tickets and stickers.
Sometimes I decorate my pages because is absolutely fun to do so and not having a whole lot of blank page helps to not feel intimidated by it.
I have cried, laughed, and have absolutely horrible times writing. But it did take time for me to find my method and style. Not forcing it was the key, and now I do journal most days. Sometimes is a line, sometimes is 10 pages, sometimes I don’t journal for weeks, but then I just go back as if I had not stopped. Is nice!
Also! Maybe don’t get a huge thick notebook. Start with a small one, something you can see yourself filling quickly, for some of us seeing that we advance quickly helps to keep the inspiration up.
What I've realized is that I get very stuck into the mindset of doing it everyday but really, I might not have enough to write about everyday. I'm going to start keeping a journal for me to put an entry to when I *feel* like I have something to say. Feelings to dump, stress to let go of.

This reminds me a lot of "The Artists Way" workbook's daily pages :) After you dump your stress and emotions, it turns into creative blips and random writings. I love it!
I started that workbook, I think it was supposed to be done daily consistently, for three months? I started the book twice but couldn't stay consistent...just curious if you were able to.
Journaling came to me in November of 2020, during my first breakup. Ironically my first full journal and the one i began with was actually gifted to me by my ex. At first, my entries were hopeless and dreadful, the pages literally filled with the heartbreak that I didn't know how to handle. Eventually though I began to see a change in my writing, and seeing that unfold before my eyes felt magical! I had documented my grief but also the path I had taken to getting back on track and through the journaling I realized that all I needed to do to "get back on track" to happiness was to practice mindfulness. Now a days, I continue to write just about anything, depending on the circumstances. I don't think I will ever not be journaling now, or at least I hope that is the case :) Also, saying journaling is like having a time capsule of your life is so accurate, a perfect way to describe it in my opinion!
When you write … also think of what you would like to read from your great grandmothers journal and write it in your own journal. I would LOVE to have got to read what she did that day and how her home was laid out etc.!!!

I absolutely love this. I've been Journaling since I was a teenager and it's been very therapeutic for me. I recently found a journal of mine from high school and got kind of emotional at entries where I talked about my aunt, who just passed away a month ago. she was a librarian and avid journaler herself and one of her poems was shared at the funeral. lately Journaling has been helping me navigate my grief. thank you for this very insightful video!! -- also my personal favorite type of journal are the Moleskine journals

i've been journalling since i was a little kid, im 19 now and it's still my best friend!! you can literally be yourself and write whatever you want and i've discovered so much of myself through journalling and overcome so many of my problems

I bought a 256 numbered pages journal and a fountain pen after watching this video lol. I love the idea of knowing how many pages I wrote and your video really inspired me to make my journaling experience a bit more fancy. It definitely helps motivate! I've been journaling on my phone and old notebooks that didn't really make me happy and some company's pen we had laying around 😂

Journaling is for you, do it however and whenever you want to. It is therapeutic, at times. It can be eye-opening, as well. Other times, it can be boring and dull, yet those entries can be helpful.
I love this video. I turned 27 on March 21st this year and since then I’ve been writing a daily journal (it’s also been a bit of a scrapbook too). I plan to keep a daily journal for this year until I turn 28. I think it will be lovely to look back on.
Watching this video makes me want to expand what I write about and not just use it to document my stream of consciousness (I’ll probably still do this most days). I love the idea of using the time as an opportunity to develop as a writer and to play with language and symbolism. Thank you for opening my mind to other ways of journaling.

I’ve been journaling everyday for three years now, I have a two hour journaling routine each evening before bed. Not only does it improve my writing, it has also been a big tool for improving my mental health.

I've been journaling for close to 30 years. I love these books. The first is a good practice. The second is practice to write a memoir, but I enjoy using it as a topic book.
I would recommend (internet search) printable feelings charts or charts that list emotions. I would suggest printable random word lists instead of a random word generator.
There are apps that provide story starters. I love doing journal entries from a different point of view. I put that character from the story starter in my situation or myself in theirs and write my entry that way. I have so much fun with this.

I've just stared journaling a couple days ago and it is already so theraputic for me. Love the sound of writing with a fountain pen. I kept watching that part and thinking I should use my Lamy fountain pen again. Good ASMR material. :)
I fill three pages of my journal (A4) in half an hour. If I had to go that slow I just wouldn't do it. The thing is to not think so much, just express yourself without censoring yourself. It may be embarrassing or shameful later, but then you never have to look at it again. That's the whole point, to get it out of your head and onto the page.
Don’t stop journaling! That’s impressive in 30 days. I’ve kept my journals since 1997 which was the year I lived in England. My only regret is that my language was not more descriptive. I also have journals where I just vented and I’ve questioned whether or not I should burn those but that’s memory. I have a few journal books that spanned several years. I’m happy to have them because I tend to forget quite a bit. Reading them is like visiting with an old friend. It also allows me to see my growth as a person. I’m still lazy at times. Always a work in progress. I also recommend taking a lot of photos 😊.
I found a lot of value in this video (not least the ASMR of listening to you write on the pages) but I also appreciated that you video yourself writing the very first page, how careful you are with your manuscript. And then, later, how you've cast those careful swoops of your ink pen aside, and you're more interested in what you're writing rather than how it is presented/how it looks on the page.

I’ve been journaling on and off since I was very young, like 7! But even earlier I’d you count random lists and drawings in a random notebook. I started writing all words when I was going through some major traumatic times in my life. The happy writing came when I got pregnant with my first child. Documenting more than stream of concious ness and a therapy. I have always used journaling as a form of therapy for myself. I never had anyone there for me and my journals always have been, unconditionally.
This is so lovely and you are so lovely. I don't journal all the time, but I love the process when I do. I agree with you in that it is very therapeutic. I also love it cause it gives you this rare moment where when looking back you have somewhat of a third person perspective. It is unique because you went through it, but when you look back you can read the intricate parts of that time and look at where you are now.

I have always been an avid journal writer.
A few months ago, my partner read my journal. They came clean to me and that's how I found out.
It broke my heart and since then I can't write.
I can't even touch the notebook I used as a journal 😔

I've journaled on and off since I was about 17 onwards...now over 30.
Would highly recommend it to anyone, doesn't even have to be good writing.
Bullet points, lists, fragments of thoughts, it's all good to get out so it's not weighing on your mind so much.
I sometimes go days or weeks or months without writing too, but eventually come back to it as a great form of catharsis, and also as if i never stopped.
It becomes so easy the nore you do it, and without feeling pressured or forced to do so.
Glad to see more people picking up the habit.
Edit: also great to look back on old journals and see a timeline of yourself and what happened in your life and who you were, both good and bad.

I have been journaling since 2006 and it’s been a rewarding experience. It’s wonderful (and embarrassing) looking back on all the memories and my dumb self in the past haha. The only downside is the ton of journals that I will have to carry with me during moving out! 😅

I love how you got a special journal just for the task, and really nice pens! I was doing the Artist's Way journaling practice: 3 pages a day, stream of consciousness. But I need first thing in the morning, after a walk in the morning, and tiny throwaway journals, so I don't get intimidated, and I don't have to worry what's being written down.

I grew up in the era that predates the internet, home computers, cell phones, etc. I love that I was born and raised during that time. I've been keeping a journal since I was about 15 years I used to make an entry daily, but then as life became busier my entries grew further and further apart. I'm making it a point to do more journaling. It's cathartic, therapeutic, and for me, self care, because it helps me unload everything that I'm going through, feeling, etc. Journaling and handwritten letters are both something we need to get back to.

Inspired by your video, I started journalling too! I'm only two days in, but as a poet and writer myself, I find it very liberating. I actually try freehand writing for all of my outlines and I really really get inspired after such sessions. I think I was born to write longhand but we have computers and my attention span has been limited so much I need to look at a screen with multiple tabs open to work on a single document lol

I've been journaling since I was 15 years old. Now, I'm 32. I only write when I feel that there's something that's happened that has had an impact in my life, as tiny as it may be. I love the idea of revisiting my journal 10 years from now and reading what I wrote in it. All the things that will have happened, my feelings in those moments, my wishes and plans, my mindset. Everything, really. When I'm writing my entries, I like to describe a bit where I am, what's happened before my writing, what I'll do next and how I was feeling when I picked up my journal. Also, as I've written 7 journals now and they are quite bulky, so last year I decided to write digital journals. I type into Google docs and save them. One document per year. Apart from saving space, the nice thing about it is that I can also add pictures to it. 😍
I loved this video!! Whenever I try to journal, for some reason I feel the need to introduce myself despite the fact nobody is going to read it, and then get bothered when I talk about something when it's hanging in a space with no context!! I always found the best thoughts/ imagery I got was when I was walking around thinking to myself and then I'd be writing random notes in my phone instead to try and remember them. I really want to try this challenge to see if I can get past the first stage that keeps me stuck!! Thank you :)

I write nearly to Woolfe's pattern, entirely inadvertently. Also, I cull essays and stories from letters written in the evenings. Hm. Ive been journaling since i have started writing, and i havent been all so regular sometimes even 1 entry in a month, recounting usually grief and some very happy moments and sometimes just motivating myself. It's therapeutic and i know whatever i do about myself via journaling

Journal writing for your personal growth and progression is extremely individual and creative. Mindfulness and meditation exercises wellness exercises and book reviews or chapters. Really depends on the focus position. Journal writing is essentially Narrative therapy. It’s been a while since I seen some one use a fountain pen ✒️ love it. Ok here a nice little challenge go collect a bunch of random post cards and send them to friends. Actually go and source a writing ✍️ store and get a letter writing set and write 1 letter a week 1-2 pages included a Polaroid picture. And you must tell 2 dad jokes. You will be blown away by how much joy this is when you get letters back.
the way you started the very first entry with handwriting slowly and intentionally and eventually started writing quickly and with less care for neatness was very relatable and validating. your handwriting is a million times better than mine at either point regardless, but still!
Great video, thankyou. Lots of helpful comments too. I use my journal as a way to sort out my flurry of ideas and plans (adhd) with sketches and lists as well as script. I used to write a lot about my feelings but when those become too much i use my journal as a distraction....a design and plan space. Loved reading about how others use their journals, thanks so much.😊
Watching this has given me the idea to combine the personal journaling exercise with the figurative language sprints- choose one thing from your own day and do the sprint about that, rather than writing about it how you'd describe it to a friend

When you described how you write notes to yourself through different media, I thought that a "commonplace book" could be a useful notebook for you to keep. I have a small, pocket-sized journal where I capture interesting quotes, print and paste in inspiring images, and other tidbits that are generally inspiring or thought-provoking. Perhaps you could capture things in one notebook instead of spread across digital notes, e-mail, etc.? It is definitely slower than typing a quick note on the phone, but I have really enjoyed leafing through my commonplace book to revisit what I captured.

I really should get back into journaling, I fall off of it for months at a time. I love the notion of Woolf calling it 'loosening writing ligaments.'
I also want to try a regular (maybe not DAILY) letter writing routine, even if it's just to myself.
I loved when you said in the figurative language example the bus was 'crime scene tape yellow' and I kind of want to write a short thing about that, maybe a short story or poem. It created such a vivid image in my mind and I felt so inspired.
I feel like that random word generator would be so useful as an exercise the way you use it to make fresh connections!

Physical journals can feel confining. Sometimes, they are too beautiful all by themselves as an object and I kind of worry that I will "disappoint" them. But usually, the physical journal just isn't accessible enough. Most of the time I can't be bothered to even fish out my little notebook (if, indeed, I even have my bag with me). I write on anything--post-its, the backs of receipts, scratch pads, gum wrappers. So, I find a spiralbound artist's sketchbook best because the coil is quite a bit larger than the height of the coil and I just glue the random "jots" in. They are random because I usually do not have the presence of mind to date them and, sometimes, I stick them to my wall first if I feel particularly transfixed by them. The artist's notebooks are also great because you can also affix small objects that have appealed to you or notes on un-paper-like materials like napkins that have more heft.
For Christmas last year I got a moleskin journal, 240 pages, and I started writing in it January of this year. There has not been one month I haven't written in it, which is really surprising to me because I always thought of myself as someone who could never keep up a journal. But ever since I stopped using social media I realized I had a lot of thoughts that I was just keeping to myself that I wanted to get out somehow. I felt a lot more creative and open to myself about what I think of things, knowing it didn't need to be edited before I posted it or anything like that. I think it's made me more open to my friends too! I'm almost done with it, because I used a lot of it for To Do lists, so I want to buy smaller notebooks I can use for lists. It's surprising to me that I am managing to finish an entire journal, and for a whole year! I think I'm going to make it a tradition to keep a journal for every year.

Slightly off topic, but what gorgeous handwriting! Eloquence isn’t necessary for journaling. Journaling gets the scraps out of your head so you are freed up to be eloquent
I used to write a lot when I was younger, basically since I learned how to write up until the end of high school. Those were rough years and I didn't like to talk about my feelings with people so I just wrote it all and literally everywhere, my notebooks, pieces of paper, the edge of a newspaper, later on my phone... just everywhere. I still find some notes around my room when I clean lol. I've been wanting to start again for ages but the thing is, those years were so hard for me that my mind linked sadness with writing, I believe just because I didn't have any kind of structure or further thought, I just wrote what was in my mind and a lot of that was very sad, unfortunately. I like this kind of video because they're inspiring, it reminds me that writing doesn't necessarily have to be such a chaotic experience. Of course, it can be cathartic at times, but it can also be a different experience, I can write beauty and fun instead of just spiraling. Idk but thank you for your video, hopefully I can get somewhere hah
I also started journaling and it feels so good to have this routine. Most of the times I do it before I go to sleep. Sometimes I also write only one sentence or a few sentences, sometimes I fill the whole page. I write about my feelings, random thoughts and sometimes the typical "today I went... ". Most of the times I don't paint a picture of how my day has been. So it's not really like a time capsule it's more like random snippets from my mind, but it feels so good to stick to doing it everyday. I also have a habit tracker.
It's not for everyone to journal everyday, that's okay, just do it when you feel like it or like once a week. For everyone who does want to do it everyday: Even if it's just one sentence everyday, that's okay! And if you don't have your journal with you, write it down on your phone or on a paper and write it in your journal later.

it can also be conversational: “I know you didn’t like James Joyce, but I wonder if you had considered xyz … “
or even an argument, if you felt so bold.
These kinds of journal entries helped me clarify many things and find my way into a deeper relationship with my role model.

I've been journaling for many many years, sometimes is difficult to fill the pages and sometimes like you feel like you are running out of space. Is something I recomend doing either if you are a writer to warm up or even for spill out everything you want and clear your mind.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it but there is a book called the artists way where it helps you regain your creativity. One of the parts of the whole program are “morning pages” every single morning you wake up and write at least 3 handwritten pages. They aren’t there to be read or shared, it simply gets all the crap out of your head so you can really get to the good stuff. It helps not just with your creativity but I really feels it helps me start my day on good footing. Try googling it if you don’t want to read the book but I think that would be an awesome challenge for you to try!
A few months ago I got the book "Great Diaries: The World's Most Remarkable Diaries, Journals, Notebooks, and Letters" and I absolutely loved it! I was so inspired and it gave me so many ideas about what I could write, I started journaling again. And I still enjoy it! 😍
