My father passed when I was 13 so I had to take on a lot of responsibilities. We had 2 metal fuse boxes like the one you cleaned up, one for each floor of the house we grew up in. I can remember sweating bullets when I had to change a fuse (in the dark), even though I had pulled the bulldog switch. You carefully unscrewed the fuse and put it back in making sure not to touch anything. Thank you for bringing back some memories we can laugh about know. 😰😰😝😂
ScoutCrafter, I watched Adam's video on Saturday and was amazed by the vise. I was impressed by the design, engineering, and quality of the vise. As I watched I compared it to Fireball Tool's vice. The Orange Tool vice can be described in one word as "finesse". Describing the Fireball Tool vice as "Godzilla". Your fused switch was of interest. We bought our current home in 2010. We had an inspection and it received a clean bill of health. The house was built in 1942 and in 1975 it was relocated. After purchase, we found none of the outlets had ground or accepted polarized plugs. I asked our contractor to replace all the outlets. I received a call telling me that they couldn't replace the outlets because the house was wired with 2 conductor paper insulated wires. Shortly after the Town's building inspector placed a "not fit for occupancy" sign on the house. In the process of rewiring the house, the electricians found 110V - 15 Amp outlets wired using speaker wire, breakers fused closed, and one fuse box that had wires coming in and going out, but they couldn't identify where the power came from or what it supplied. Bob
Holy cow! Speaker wire! 😳. If the early wiring was completed correctly it lasted for many years, the obvious safety issues eventually were addressed but some older pieces were very overbuilt and performed well. This fuse block is still very functional today and some old time electricians preferred fuses over breakers. It’s always smart to have a qualified electrician check out your system. I think the best money you can ever spend is on a good home inspection before you buy. 😃👍
The fuses take me back to the 70's when we had them in our electrical box. Every now and then I needed to replace one and it always took a while to find the right one. Thanks for sharing this.
I remember having a fuse box in my old house and my father telling me never to touch it because he always made sure to replace the fuses with their correct rating and actually we seldom had any problems except a few times during thunderstorms when the power would fluctuate and sometimes take one out.
I love this time period because all 4 kids were born in the last 5 years so as much as I enjoy yesteryear, there is no time like the present. The tools made in this time though leave a lot to be desired. Great show as always.

That vise is what you would find in the pattern makers work area. HF is still selling those breaker bars for $21.99. I wonder what the similar Icon model is like for $44.99. I never pulled the trigger because I have the handles of two older ones that broke so that I went to Craftsman years ago. I do have a 3/4 drive from Proto in my 3/4 Proto set. One of the reasons I picked the 1920s was it was really the beginning of great cars, electrical, machining, film and recording. I don't drink enough to be bothered by Prohibition. Even LA wasn't bad back then.
I saw the Orange vice vid when it came out. It is supreme. Abom79 does great work. I liked the one where he spray welds material on a shaft and turns it to specs... Awesome. Cutting Edge Engineering does spray welding as well. Great features, rotating head, 3 anchor points for the solid jaw, main bearing is a thrust ball bearing, dovetailed replicable jaws... After watching last week, I ordered and received that meter. I'm glad I got it! When you were working on the knife switch, I was thinking of the knob and tube wiring in the house I grew up in. It was built around 1915. It was old enough to not even have fuses but lead links. It also had gas piping in the walls that fed sconces for illumination. The house I live in now was built about 10 years later than the 1st house and has BX. Great advances in only 10 years.
@@shieldcracker it was a short length of a soft metal with a spade type of connector at each end that was screwed into a post. There was a knife switch to disconnect the circuit.
The handles on my snap on ratchets are holding up great and I also think that the old electric switches and fuses are commanding a premium because they are from a gone by era and looks so cool
I like the old screw in fuses and the stuff that went with it. The old knife switches were like sawmill stuff as you DIDN'T mess up around them. I had that rubber in a tooth flosser handle and I took a knife and cut it all out and I like the vise but it's too dainty for me when I get to clamping. I need something from Fireball Tool for that. Happy week and God Bless! Haven't heard from Unc. Wonder if he got slapped in the hospital for fluid retention.

Plastics and especially rubbers going sticky over time has nothing to do with porosity, it's quality or lack there of. When handles go sticky its manufacturers cutting cost by using low quality or unsuitable elastomers.
So can a product like 303 marine & aerospace prevent that from happening? I treated the 7 piece Craftsman V20 tool set I bought last year and we will learn if that helps.
@@johnpossum556 It's an internal process involving the migration of plasticizer to the surface making it sticky so it's doubtful putting an external coating would help, in fact it may accelerate the degradation by drawing the plasticizer out. Thank you for the video, that's an interesting heat lamp probably replaced by the GE reflector heat bulbs. Mica, interesting material, also known as Isinglass, it's a rock you can see through, yes, I collect that too
Yes you hit the idea on the head. Somewhat finite number of customers...buying Somewhat indestructible tools...the manufacturer runs out of customers...so they make a certain failure aspect built in. As that old famous chef used to say...."BAM!" new customers.
That has to be the Maserati of vises. I can appreciate that vise the same way I do the Maserati, in pictures. Also with the push to do away with incandescent bulbs (now against the law to sell) that heat lamp won't be more than an ornament with an LED bulb in it.
FYI- In this Sunday’s local newspaper there was an article stating that incandescent bulbs will no longer be manufactured (legislation became effective), ALTHOUGH it’s still legal to utilize incandescent bulbs (stockpiled personal supply). FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
Yes- They started years ago with 100 watt bulb ban then worked their way down. I’m surprised people still use incandescent bulbs in some lamps. They are pretty hungry power wise. 😃👍
Good mish mosh! Saw Aboms videos and yes very nice vise to look at. I would rather have the Reed vise that was in the background. $1500 is a hefty price. Thanks
Hey bud that Fuse System was Dangerous - I replaced my grandmother’s old one to upgrade her box / but to be honest I work live 85% +of the time and I find it easier if that makes sense - but anyway she was 96 years old and if a fuse blew she used to keep a plastic bag hanging on the pipe to the right of the box and when a fuse blew she knew exactly what to do and where not to touch it and I can’t believe that she never got shocked ⚡️- But I do have here older panel still and I’m going to go check it out with the multimeter 👈🏼 as well as I Duno if she wiped it down but the box is clean . Ttys John ✅ thanks for the video
Most times back in the day people knew how to make do with everything in their home. Today some people have no idea where the breaker panel or sewer trap is in their own home! 🫣😂👍
Those sticky rubber handles suck. My parents had a boombox covered in that cheap rubber. I remember I had a car buffer with that material on the handle. I threw it away! As for the vise, you talked me in to the green handle screwdriver, the red tool box, and the Tesmen meter. I draw the line at a $1500 vise. I did like that fuse block and lamp though. Great mosh today. BTW that Tesmen is fantastic! Love the flashlight.
Honestly that annoys me. Lots of power tools also have those crappy coverings. Personally I like things to outlast me, although now that isn’t say much. 😂👍
Have you seen Jason's (Fireball tools) big red vise? He did a crazy comparison test on it along with the biggest Bullet and I think Reed. I believe it's also US-made.
Spot on, Scout. Sure, we had good times, but we also had The Cuban Missile Crisis, then JFK (and the others) got capped. But, we survived and here we are to complain about the Millenials.
I always say it’s like the ex-girlfriend syndrome. You broke up years ago and you think of all the good times you had so you get back together and within a month you realize all the bad things you forgot and why you broke up in the first place! 😂
Nice video. I thought you were going to say the lamp was a food warming lamp from a restaurant. I bought a large fan at the flea market and it spins backwards. I cannot get the housing off to see if it is wired backwards. It also only starts on the medium speed. Maybe because it is wired wrong. What do you think?
I believe Sometimes the capacitor is wired backwards that could cause that problem, other times it is the primary winding that is in question. If you can try spinning the fan blade in the proper direction just before hitting the switch while the blade is spinning. Sometimes that will work. 😃👍
Orange vise is nice. I have hand a couple of grabby things when they were made in the UK they were awesome as soon as they started making them you know where 🤫😔 they are now stinky and get sticky 😡. Twain does make good tools though. Everyone needs a dozen or more breaker bars, just what kind of maniac doesn't 😶🌫️. I will say one positive about extentions and sockets made by that one place that makes stinky and sticky stuff if you use USA made nuts, bolts and screws you will break those mentioned extentions and sockets first 😅
Hate those kind of nasty gross grubby rubber handles, my acetate handle Craftsman screwdrivers are going to outlast me.........Worked in a lot of old buildings and there was some crazy wiring is some of those places. The worst shock I ever got was standing on a scaffold in some old factory and something zapped me on my back and it was a lot more than 120v that's for sure (I'm thinking 480), looking back I'm lucky it didn't knock me off the scaffold to my death.......Grama's Old House had some interesting wiring too but never a bit of trouble with it.
My seventh second in thought; I wonder what ScoutCrafter's tackle box looks like? I just realized a wood spin-a-ma-thingie (Yes, that IS the technical term, thanks for asking!) I put up in the tree with a piece of salvaged cable from the local elementary school does not spin-a-ma-thingy. I couldn't bear to see something that quality go but then again the were cut into 3 or 4 foot lengths. So are we going to get an unrehearsed view in to your tackle box, Big Guy?
I saw that video about the orange vise and my first thought was, that looks too fragile, first time you beat on it or tried to twist something forcefully in the jaws something would give.
It’s definitely not for heavy work. However it would be fun for light duty or precision work. Adam must have got thicker jaws because the ones pictured on the website are half as thick. 😃👍
That is some impressive vise. To be honest nothing I do is anywhere near precise enough to need that. I would feel bad marring it up enlarging holes and cutting stuff with a hack saw.
My mouse escaped! I caught a stupid(blind?) one yesterday and today I put it in the ring and forgot there is one cracked up hole and I went to get it some sunflower seeds and it got out the hole! 😆
There’s a big problem with Adam’s new vice: he’s not telling us how he got it. Did he buy it, or is he being paid to like it? He talks about it like it’s the absolute cat’s meow, and I can’t take that seriously if he’s not saying where it came from. It’s a credibility issue. He usually says it: “The fine folks at Big Ass Fans sent me a big ass fan for free - let’s see if I think this free $8000 fan is any good”. At least I know where I am with that. This one? He had it “in storage”. As far as I can tell, Orange makes very good machine vices. Tom Lipton over at the oxtoolco channel seemed to like them enough to buy one a few years ago - although I haven’t actually seen it pop up in any videos after that. But this bench vice? Don’t know what to think of it. Objectively speaking, it looks very nice, although it’s not to my personal taste at all. At some point, Adam is rattling the moving jaw a little, and you can see there’s quite a bit of slop, radially, around the piston/screw. May not matter too much, but I wouldn’t want to see that for $1500. In fact I have vices I bought for 30 Euros and the jaws don’t do that. I don’t know: it’s probably a very good tool, but I have a feeling they’re mainly selling those to young Silicon Valley types.
I like the vise design and thought that went into making it. I enjoy seeing reviews and real world applications of different tools and accessories even if out of my price range. That fan was a trip- He took a lot of heat over that. 😂. When people saw how much it cost they freaked! 😂😂. Honestly of all the TH-cam personalities out there you know Adam is one of the most genuine. I bet he is exactly the same to you regardless of your status. It’s hard trying to sell products and not look like you are selling products. 😃👍
I unsubscribed from Adam a year or so ago. As he has gotten more popular I found his content less relatable or informative as it relates to my interests. I am happy he has moved on and got some super fancy tools guys like us dream of. Time to go see what a $1500 vise looks like 😂🤑 cheers
Yes Joe, his early stuff was geared more towards the everyday shop guy but then he was moving up and I too couldn’t keep interest. However I like when he gets back to the basics. I have no interest in CNC stuff. 😃👍
That vise is awesome! I have it, only the HF version. It's klunky in comparison and painted a non-assumming gray, they call it their Pipe Vise. Come to think of it I don't think I have ever even oiled it ( on purpose! LOL! ) but I've had it a couple of decades on different workbench setups and I enjoy it a lot. It was one of the few gifts I ever asked for specifically from my mother. It does have wingnuts so all its settings are tool less and that gets high rankings from me as a properly finished product! 🟦🟨

Thank you for the video, that's an interesting heat lamp probably replaced by the GE reflector heat bulbs.
Mica, interesting material, also known as Isinglass, it's a rock you can see through, yes, I collect that too
I remember mica was big years ago, it was in quite a few things! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Yes, it was used in old kerosene heaters to view the fire and I have some in my vintage Christmas as mica snow
Still being mined in Spruce Pine NC,near Asheville. Sweeten Creek Rd in Asheville was the mica processing area and the roadside still glitters.
Yes you hit the idea on the head. Somewhat finite number of customers...buying Somewhat indestructible tools...the manufacturer runs out of customers...so they make a certain failure aspect built in. As that old famous chef used to say...."BAM!" new customers.
Planned Obsolescence…. 😃👍
Abom starrett vise was given to him as a gift from the factory floor that was used for years
That is awesome. 😃👍
That has to be the Maserati of vises. I can appreciate that vise the same way I do the Maserati, in pictures. Also with the push to do away with incandescent bulbs (now against the law to sell) that heat lamp won't be more than an ornament with an LED bulb in it.
😂😂😂. Putting a LED bulb in that lamp is a great analogy to some jobs I know of. 😃👍
Hi Scoutcrafter try some Tub o' towels on your tools. They're cleaning wipes good on plastic and great on everything. 😊love your videos
Interesting video Thanks 🛠👍😊
Thanks
Tony- Yes it’s a little pricey but I always like seeing new Vise designs and features. 😃👍
Hey bud that Fuse System was Dangerous - I replaced my grandmother’s old one to upgrade her box / but to be honest I work live
85% +of the time and I find it easier if that makes sense - but anyway she was
96 years old and if a fuse blew she used to keep a plastic bag hanging on the pipe to the right of the box and when a fuse blew she knew exactly what to do and where not to touch it and I can’t believe that she never got shocked ⚡️- But I do have here older panel still and I’m going to go check it out with the multimeter 👈🏼 as well as I Duno if she wiped it down but the box is clean .
😂 Paul- Neither of us can afford that however keep it in the back of your mind the next time you buy a lottery ticket! 😂👍
He’s got some really lovely stuff way out of my budget
You and me both! However I like seeing that stuff and think of it when buying a lottery ticket! 😂👍
I grew up with fuses and did a lot of wrong things but I am lucky and survived in spite of my stupidity
John, I hope you washed your hands after fondling the business end of that litter box scoop!😀
Are you kidding, I had to clean that thing thoroughly before showing it! 😂. Those are messy. However clumping litter is a game changer! 😃👍
That is a very cool vise. Probably be half the price if it was made in Nebraska
I believe you are spot on. 😃👍
That old black fuse looks like its window was mica.
I thought that too, it has that rainbow tint right?! 😃👍
BOOM !
I have some expert ratchets by Mac tools .handle dissolved on them.same thing with other handles I have
Honestly that annoys me. Lots of power tools also have those crappy coverings. Personally I like things to outlast me, although now that isn’t say much. 😂👍
I love that ceramic fuse block, nice cleanup job! Is the pull-ring leather?
Not leather- It is a pressed heat resistant non conductive material of some sort. Slightly flexible. I’m curious to what that material is. 😃👍
Sangat bagus sekali semua nya bisa di manfaatkan👍👍👍
Breaker bar is at Harbour Frieght $22.
That bar (Taiwan made) is absolutely fantastic. 😃👍
House next door has 2x20 amps just like that
If they ever upgrade grab the old stuff!!! 😃👍
I seen the craftsman scraper with acetate handle on the Napa website just now. Like $14 it's not USA Made i don't think though
Selamat pagi Pak bos🙋♂️
Cool light! or is that warm light. eagle I keep waiting for Monday Wednesday and Friday.
Warm light every time! Did you know that some of the cool lightbulbs trigger receptors in our brain that make it hard to sleep?!
Have you seen Jason's (Fireball tools) big red vise?
He did a crazy comparison test on it along with the biggest Bullet and I think Reed.
I believe it's also US-made.
Yes! That is really a monster vise! I have a couple larger vises in my shop but most times they are a little big for my work. 😃👍
John, I ordered a craftsman scraper from Napa with that red handle. I'll let you know what I think of it. It was $13.49
I saw that NAPA had the nice ones, I’m going to look at the NAPA store next time I go! 😃👍
I will say one positive about extentions and sockets made by that one place that makes stinky and sticky stuff if you use USA made nuts, bolts and screws you will break those mentioned extentions and sockets first 😅
In the last Decade Taiwan has made some spectacular tools. My big fear is that China will change that somehow. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter I think if they get they're hands on Taiwan you are exactly right there.
Wilde tools makes same craftsman scraper. USA made
I think they made it for Craftsman. Northeast Kansas! 😃👍
Holy cow! I know guys who work as commercial electricians and they say 120 is annoying but 480 is a whole different animal! 🫣😂👍
I like my Mayhew scrapers
Their ProGrip handles look suspicious. 🤔😃👍
Do you mean Fishing tackle box?
@@ScoutCrafter Yes, the kind with snap swivels like I used on the wind spinamathingy!
Does anyone remember Sun Lamps??
Do you collect old buss fuses?
I did- I have a nice assortment. All different types and styles. Now they are becoming more expensive for some reason. 😃👍
I saw the video
That is some impressive vise. To be honest nothing I do is anywhere near precise enough to need that. I would feel bad marring it up enlarging holes and cutting stuff with a hack saw.
Patrick did you see Noah’s Fireball vise review?
My mouse escaped! I caught a stupid(blind?) one yesterday and today I put it in the ring and forgot there is one cracked up hole and I went to get it some sunflower seeds and it got out the hole! 😆
They rely heavily on scent to travel. 😃👍
The problem with making things fool-proof is they keep making better fools. It's like you're challenging them.
It’s true! I think one problem is the lack of education on these subjects. They should bring back shop classes and home economics in schools.
I still can't believe how exposed those old US panel switches are. For me they are just a joke from a Tom and Jerry cartoon.
Gotcha 👍👍🔩🔩
That vise is awesome! I have it, only the HF version. It's klunky in comparison and painted a non-assumming gray, they call it their Pipe Vise. Come to think of it I don't think I have ever even oiled it ( on purpose! LOL! ) but I've had it a couple of decades on different workbench setups and I enjoy it a lot. It was one of the few gifts I ever asked for specifically from my mother. It does have wingnuts so all its settings are tool less and that gets high rankings from me as a properly finished product!
🟦🟨
Wow! HF?!? 😃👍
