Merry Christmas John! I remember when the milkman would come and leave fresh milk on the porch and pick up the empty bottles (child in the '50s). Sometimes he would give the kids a piece of ice from his truck! Yes, I am that old! 😊Regards, Bill.

Born in 1951 in the little town of Coldwater.
The Olmstead Dairy delivered milk in town. When we moved to Crippen St. Mr. Bradley delivered milk in the neighborhood in a horse drawn milk delivery wagon.
The milk was kept cool with ice and on hot summer days since we were at the end of the route he would give out ice chips to the kids on the route.
The horse knew the route and had a schedule of his own. If Mr. Bradley talked too long the horse would walk down to the next house and Mr. Bradley had to catch up.
I went to school with Kim Bradley. Mr. Bradley's son.
We still have some milk bottles from the dairy by Union City where we lived from 1990 to 2011.

Great video John!!!! I remember the glass Sealtest milk bottles… We had an aluminum Sealtest box that the milkman would use to put the bottles in and take the empties out. Sometime in the early 1960’s Sealtest announced that they were no longer delivering milk to the homes. We really missed that tradition. We used the aluminum Sealtest container as a mailbox for the next 45 years!!! I also enjoyed your screwdriver restoration. I use a vibratory tumbler at work to gently clean them and it does a great job. Thanks for sharing your videos with us.

Since I am a bit older than you, I do remember having milk delivered to the door in glass bottles. And Yes, I think the milk tasted better back them. So many of today's plastic containers are so flimsy they are almost icky to hold. Sunlight quickly degrades them, which is probably by design. Water bottles are the worst...

merry Christmas john. wonderful show. few years ago my son called me at work needing a screw driver to work on his car. I have 200 screwdrivers hanging on the wall in my shop. Did he choose from those ? Nope, he took my very expensive gunsmithing drivers instead. Guess it’s obvious how well that turned out. After I finished crying, went to the Midway website bought a whole new set. 73’s. jimmy.

What a great show we got our milk delivered in a glass bottle on the porch in a insulated box. My wife watched the video on the OEM screwdrivers ( Emerald Green ) 💚 and got me both stubby and long for Christmas. The hollow grind on a screwdriver is the best like gunsmith screwdrivers. Thank you for your videos always a pleasure.

Merry Christmas, John. That previously restored screwdriver with the clear yellow handle was gorgeous. I did all the church services and family events yesterday for Christmas Eve, so today, I was at home on my own. I puttered a bit in the shop and took some time to relax and count my blessings. Thank you for the video to round out the day.

History is very entertaining. The milk bottles to cartons to plastic. Here in calif they charge us for the plastic bags when we buy groceries. Almost everything you buy today is contained in plastic. After the first there will be more crv s on all bottles if I understood the new fee. I commented on how many screwdrivers I have. When a tool breaks you keep it until you have a new use for it. Your grinds on the screwdrivers look perfect. Our family moto was to make it as good as new or better. You live up to it. Thank You

We still get milk in glass bottles especially if delivered from the milkman ! Early mornings 40 years ago it'd just be the milkman , postman and myself out delivering milk, letters and newspapers , this time of year I loved breaking the clean snow up people's paths with my footprints ..... Thanks for the memory John . .

Society is moving backwards rather than forwards. Glass is much more recyclable than plastic, and it is cleaner. I used to have milk delivered, it came in glass. The milk was better and lasted longer. The bottles were returned, washed, and reused. I think recycling was better 50 years ago than it is today.

When we lived with my grandparents our milk was delivered to the house in glass half gallon bottles. Our milkman was named Frank and he worked for Stew Leonard until he saved up enough to go into business for himself.
I don’t often buy bottled water but lately when I do I’m afraid the bottle will crush before the cap twists off.

My uncle urban Englert was our milkman when I was a kid. The milk came in glass bottles with Englerts dairy printed on them until the dairys switched to cartons. The metal crates the milk came in were a different size for the cartons, so he gave my grandfather hundreds of them to use at his nursery. They made great stands for temporary benches amongst many other uses. I still have a couple dozen of them.

Merry Christmas John. I have the same ceramic tree too. The screwdrivers I like to use are gunsmith screwdrivers. They fit better and you have less of a chance of twisting out of the slot. Another driver I found is an electrician's driver for outlets and other electrical parts. They look like a Phillips tip but are different. They can really torque down the connections.

What a great Xmas mosh! A real treat in the stocking on Christmas day. I liked the milk container part. When I was a little guy in the late forties we picked up our milk at the one grocery nearby in quart glass bottles, later on we got a drive-thru dairy and my mom bought four gallons at a time in glass jugs in a wire basket. We always had nonfat which my grandfather called "blue john". With three boys my family went through a lot of milk. Your retro on that screwdriver was great. You sure get those tips perfect. Thanks again for the gift mosh. Happy holidays!

When I was growing up it was commonplace for almost everyone to get milk delivered and it was always in the glass pint bottles with foil lids, the milkman would deliver every day of the week other than Sunday so you could have fresh milk every day.
Some dairies would also deliver other basic stuff like butter, cream, eggs, juice etc, the guy would come round to the house every Monday evening to settle the previous weeks bill.
They would drive around at between 4:30am and 6:30am in electric flatbed trucks to keep the noise down and leave your order on the doorstep ready for you when you got up in the morning.
Once large supermarkets started popping up everywhere people started buying milk at the supermarket because they undercut the price of the local dairies.
The pint and half pint milk sizes were originally in the cardboard cartons with larger sizes in HDPE jugs, later they phased out the cartons and sold all sizes in the jugs.

Thanks f putting out a video on Christmas. Back in the 50s we had Milk delivered to the house in glass bottles by Borden milk man. Before I moved I used to buy milk in glass bottles from Cedar Lane on 14th Avenue and 150th street. That was in the 70s and 80s. I agree with you about the plastic bottles. They are so chinsey now!

Merry Christmas, John. My father worked as a Milkman after WWII and he delieverd the milk bottles and big cans (20-50 Liters) with a horse-drawn carriage up to the early 1950. The he bought a Opel-Blitz truck to deliever his stuff. I remember that I worked during the holidays with him and I've still got the smell of fresh milk in my nose running out of these big hoses into the cans. That was really great and I liked it very much.Hope. you'll doing well. Happy new year

I love the little Xmas tree at the end.

I know you are feeling better because you had a bit of a rant going. What maniac doesn't appreciate a rant? I agree about the great design of the cream container. The milk we had delivered by the milk man was in glass bottles with a paper tab top recessed in the bottle top. We put the empty bottles on the porch so milk man would know what to leave next time. Glass bottles keep the beverage inside at the perfect temperature. Nothing today is as good.

Hi Scout, thanks for another great video. For me, I always find your videos “grounding”. I see all the crazy stuff going on in the world and then you put out a video and I can feel myself relax. I love your rants because me, and probably everyone else watching, are sitting there smiling and nodding. Even though I live in Australia our lives, interests, and values are so similar.
You’re right about the plastic cream bottle, whoever designed that must have spent hundreds of hours, and who knows how many prototypes, to get it right, just for it to be thrown away after one use. I did notice though it has that very thin plastic outer shell that can be easily removed so that makes the bottle easy to repurpose. Remember when some manufacturers that produced jams and spreads used to shape the jar so that it could be reused as a drinking glass? I loved those but I don’t seem to see them anymore.
Merry Christmas John from a hot Australia, Stuart and Lea (Leanne).

Hehe ok John, spending a lot of time on containers, but I do have to agree things are cheaper in today's era. I re-use the water bottles and I just found out that there is a re-use maximium use of them. Over time I have noticed that they get less rigid and then I did some checking and found out that they are not meant to be re-used like I do. Just wanted to share.

Merry Christmas! I bought one of those Pittsburgh 2-in-1's when you showed them a while back and I love it. The shape of the handle is great, it feels nice in the hand and I love the long shaft instead of the bits in other multi-screwdrivers. The last time I was at Harbor Freight, they were clearancing them out. It looks like they're going the way of the Dodo! I hope other manufacturers pick up on the 2-in-1 design. I like it way better than the 4-in-1's everyone else makes. Anyway, thanks for another year of great content! Stay well and Happy New Year!

About the milk containers. I worked for a company that made the catalyst used to make the plastic that was made into the milk containers. If for any reason the catalyst had any oversized particles it would cause minuscule pinholes in the milk containers and the milk would leak out 😮.

We've made all sorts of fruit "butters" and "cheeses" (similar but thicker or even semi-solid) over the years Apple, Pear, Plum and Greengage great with some fresh bread and traditional (dairy) cheeses !
I need a lot more practice on my screwdriver re-grinds, getting better and keep picking up useful tips from you so thanks. I recently bought a set of those sanding pads on your recommendation ready to deploy on some of my milky, slightly stinky old acetate handles !

Up until I moved from the Denver metro area in 2009 I had a weekly visit from the milk man. I would place the empty glass bottles in the cooler box along with a slip where I checked off what I wanted for the week. I remember the glass milk container that they delivered to the homes but I don’t remember the type of caps you showed. I remember a cardboard bottle cap. Also, it funny how they could leave it on your porch with no refrigeration, not knowing how long it would sit there and today the grocery stores have to maintain a certain temperature and if it doesn’t maintain it they have to dump it. 🤔

SC, MERRY CHRISTMAS! One of the most useful "multi-purpose tools" in the shop are Chopsticks! Free from our local Chinese take out and can be easily pointed at one end in a pencil sharpener. The other end can be sharpened like a chisel and both are incredibly useful! Standard Chopsticks are great for mixing, poking, etc. and can be constantly reshaped until too short or until they break. Hollow Ground Brownell's brand screwdrivers are IMHO the best in the world - WAY BETTER than Snap-on's, Klien's, etc. While I have a plethora of craftsman USA made screwdrivers, if using for long periods of time the handle is not comfortable and kills the skin on my palms! BTW, please do a video on making one of your flat shank screwdrivers like you said you prefer - with the blade on the same plane. Makes sense for prying as you said in the video. Have a Happy New Year!!

As a child, I remember what turned out to be the last days of the Milkman and regular milk deliveries.
Wow, thanks for yanking that memory into the foreground.... Haven't thought about Milkmen since the last one disappeared.

    Merry Christmas.
Wax cartons were nice, they made good fire starters, I still have a 1960s 1 quart carry holder for them, it works great.
I don't like the 1 gallon milk cartons, I end up cutting them to pieces before I put them in the trash because without cutting them up they take up so much space in the trash can.

3:14 i'm visiting family just 2 miles as the crow flies from Turners Dairy in Penn Hills PA. Actually, we'll be picking some heavy whipping cream tomorrow for the wife's coffee. Merry Christmas to all.

They make a light cream that’s between half & half and heavy cream. It’s really good in coffee. 😃👍

Merry Christmas. I can remember the milkman coming to our house when I was a kid. We had an old insulated milk box on the front stoop and my mother would have me go out and get the 2 bottles for her every week. I still remember the milkman had a white uniform and drove a white truck. Good memories. That was Weisglass dairies.

Fantastic rant about containers. I agree whole heartly. We had milk cows and would keep the milk in a restaurant size mason jar in the fridge. Always fresh. We would separate the cream of the top and put it on fresh peaches. That was the life. I need to start practicing on some of my screwdrivers. I only have about 100 screwdrivers, but don't that against me. 😁

Of course I remember the glass milk jugs. We had a milkman bring them to the house and leave them in the old galvanized insulated box on the front porch. Ever have one of those? Great show, screwdrivers look like candy!

You think through the details and relay your observations to us. It's good stuff thanks. Design matters and yes that Dunkin' creamer container is well done.

Just a couple of thoughts, first I love apple butter. Sorry to say to say but the 5 ShopRite’s near us have closed and left the area. Popsicle sticks are great. For cleaning, spreading glue or with the rounded ends cut off they become planks for my train set.
