The duramax note never gets old and it’s my favorite. The Cummins has that distinct deep tractor rumble note to it.

These all sounded absolutely amazing. I never knew that those Cummins could sound that good I’m a duramax guy and haven’t researched dodge much before. When I was a kid my uncle had a blue 1998 ish dodge diesel and it was so loud idling. It would rattle windows and when he started it I could hear it from his kitchen and I always remember how cool it was. It rusted out. But that thing was a beast.
They both sound great, very different from each other though. That whistle is awesome!

I’ve always loved the way duramax’s whistle and then once you pass the threshold it makes the very iconic rumble.
I drove a Chevy Duramax 2500 loved that Truck and pulled every thing like it was nothing..

One of the big reasons why the Cummins is louder is because the Pistons are bigger but there are fewer of them making it louder bigger bangs in each cylinder compared to a V-8 with smaller pistons but more of them smaller explosions

Dude with cummins , that muffler believe it or not is doing your turbo n boost a huge favor. I just went from straight pipe to a hollow can muffler n build psi faster n smoother thru the revs. I’m not even going to get into stacks n what kinda power they rob but they do. Nice trucks 👌

The Cummins sounds great but after being in a lot of them when your driving a long ways that constant drone can be irritating ik now they are pretty quiet new with all the exhaust stuff when new, duramax u can straight pipe em and not to loud but then it screams when u get on it

I've got a 5.9 with 4" and it sounds great but I had a 04 6ohhh with stack in the bed. I believe it was tuned but no clue. It sounded badass. I'd scare people going under bridges in indy with that truck. I love my 5.9 though
My neighbor had a 6.0 and I agree at high rpm’s no other diesel sounds meaner. But you can’t beat the pissed off tractor sound of a Cummins.

What is the maximum mileage you would buy a used diesel? I personally love the cummins and could afford one around 2006-08 so either the 5.9 or 6.7. Would 200,000 be too many miles? This would be my first diesel truck

Cummins can last forever. With them being a straight 6 they are always gonna be way more reliable then the shitmax or powerstroke, but I agree the 12v Cummins is probably the best diesel engine ever made for a pick up truck.
That all depends on how the truck was used and maintained. I wouldn’t be worried about 200k miles but make sure to check over everything
Cody Volff Not necessarily. The duramax can be a very reliable engine and probably more reliable than 04.5-07 5.9s. The cummins has a lot of injector issues and a stuck injector will take out a cylinder in a hurry

As far as sound goes, and this is coming from a Chevy guy, the sound of the Cummins is unmatched. And the reduced vibration/harmonics of inline-6's engine architecture is why semis have inline 6's. Dodge/Ram knows this and is resting on their laurels.....they need to step up with their transmissions.
2nd gen Cummins has to be the loudest out of em all.

I remember back when I was in maybe 10th grade before I really knew much about diesels or cars in general I heard a cummins go by and was like wow I like the way that sounds. My dad had a 6.0 at the time and still has it. But since then I’ve owned 2 Cummins and man I just love them. Don’t get me wrong though I think the 6.0s and really any diesel sound great but the first time I really payed attention to a Cummins i was hooked

As a guy who has owned a 5.9 Cummins and an LMM Duramax... I'll take Duramax sound any day. Nothing beats that whistle for me, the rumble and hiss of the VGT is the best. the Cummins is all engine noise. Infact, I'd say the Duramax is better in almost every aspect of the truck, power, interior quality, reliability, and looks. Cummins has the slight MPG advantage tho haha.

The problem with vgt is they might sound good at low rpm and that’s about all they’re good for. Any time I hear one I cringe at all the back pressure
