  • In this week’s video, we cover: How to Deal with Growling and Bones!
Does your dog have a hard time when they have something valuable, such as a bone? There is always a game for that! Today we talk on how you can get your dog to move away from something delicious without any conflict whatsoever!
What does that mean? That means NO GROWLY behaviour!
There is no need to take things from your dog, especially if that’s been part of your dog’s relationship with bones in the past. If they think it will get taken away, they are more likely to show that growly behaviour we don’t want to see.
Watch this episode as we talk you through a more cooperative, and safe, way to handle these situations where you need your dog to come away from a bone.
Observe three dogs, ALL at the same time, enjoy some meaty, yummy bones and get to see just how you can create a safer relationship-enhancing approach through games-based training.

That makes sense. Our first dog never reacted taking toys away but our 10 month old beagle started growling terribly. He doesn’t bite, just the sound is quite unnerving. Will start trading up now.

So glad you find this useful David and well done for listening to your dog 🐾
You don't want him to keep rehearsing this so learning to trade is a great solution ⭐
Here's some more learning on this in our amazing podcast podcast.absolute-dogs.com/761645/8910131-how-to-deal-with-growling-and-bones

I love this,. One of my 3 dogs can guard, but to play toy switch or disengagement is a game changer. He very rarely reacts now, we never ever remove the item, but trade up.

I love how these videos are all about ppl telling you how to deal with a dog with aggression over bones but never actually use a dog who has issues with it.... so frustrating.

Hey There! I suppose you could say its a testament to how well these strategies and games really do work! Not only that, we do not want to purposely expose a dog to a situation they find triggering for the sake of a video. So we set our demo dogs up for success with a situation we know won't throw them over threshold. That being said, we completely understand your point! If your dog is well rehearsed at resource guarding we always recommend seeking one on one help from a games-based trainer or behaviorist. You can check out a couple great options here: www.devondogs.co.uk/ or here www.beha.vet/

My dog trusts humans to lose their ball bone etc. But not when another dog tries to steal it. How you you work on the latter?

I agree, I have the issues of My dog being a little jealous even with a ball.

The above games totally worked for human interactions. But he's less of a fan when a dog runs over and tries to steal his ball mid game with me

Thank you for sharing this valuable information. We have an older lab that resource guards with other dogs but not with us. We also have a nine month old Aussie poodle mix that is starting to learn some of the resource guarding from the lab. My concern with performing this type of game is that the resource guarding might happen during the game and also when we call one of the dogs away the other one might try to come as well. I believe you mentioned that might happen in the video with one of your dogs. But it does not seem that it did. How would you handle that? Should we play this game individually first? Also, please let me know if you have more videos or information on resource guarding amongst dogs as opposed to humans. Thank you so much for all your help.

I don't let my 3 steal each others treats. So at times they have to sit in their crates in peace to enjoy eating at their own pace

I was wondering what the cold treat was as we live in the high desert and it get very hot here. (over 105 degrees)

Cold fresh meat. Anything your dog finds reinforcing.

What would be the first steps to train an adult dog this; a dog who is reluctant to leave the bone and come to you for the high-value treats??

Agreed. Absolute dogs... pls tell us what to do to first get the dog away from the bone/treat, if they just growl and won't leave it at all?? Thanks!

How do we take away licki mats as my dog will try and eat them if I don't take they away?

I will try this….but so doubtful that my pup will ever leave a tasty bone 🦴 like that. I don’t think she will find her dinner or treats more rewarding. Still, it’s a great video

Hey There! Have you heard about the Bucket? Its an analogy for our dogs stress threshold - theres many things that can pay into it such as excitement, fear, pain, itching, gastro upset, etc AND microtriggers from our other dogs. Here's a super podcast on the Bucket that will explain more: th-cam.com/video/L8yQYLs5ojI/w-d-xo.html
Furthermore, sometimes our dogs need a break from eachother. Think of it like spending all your time with your bestest friend... after a bit some of their quirks start to irritate you until you impatient with them. Its similar for our dogs, which is why we recommend gated communities, here's a super podcast on preventing multi dog madness th-cam.com/video/D4yTtca1HGo/w-d-xo.html

My beautiful bearded collie (in thumbnail pic) occasionally finds wild animal bones when we are out walking. There is nothing he sees as being more valuable and he very purposefully challenges when I try and get bone off him. These things can potentially be carrying all sorts of nasties and it's worrying that I can't get it off him.

I have a rescue Bullterrier who was food deprived from a pup till around 8 months then spent 4 months in kennels. She doesn’t guard kibble but will resource guard bones (raw fed) I can’t seem to find a better deal to get her to drop the bone. What can I do?

  • @Moominteapot

What bones are these/where do you get them from?

    • @absoluteDogsofficial
      @absoluteDogsofficial  ปีที่แล้ว

We use a wide range of different options for our dogs. You can pick up bones from loads of great suppliers that I'm sure your dog will love 🐶🥰

I think people practice taking the bone because if you have to or a child touches it they need to be used to that. This would not help with small kids.

Life is messy. If your dog gets something why risk a bite? Train them that you control the food. My dog just growled at me of a new toy because I put it up. She brought it to me. I will take it and give it back until she learns I control when where and how she gets treats.

Hey Michele, we completely agree! Careful management of kids and dogs is super important. We have a great podcast where we chat about exactly this podcast.absolute-dogs.com/761645/6427588-kids-and-dogs Furthermore, we love a good trade with a dog as it shows them there is always another good deal coming, so there's no need to worry about losing their current good deal. It's all about mindset and creating rewarding experiences! And of course we recommend seeking help from a professional as resource guarding can escalate quickly.
